This was a great video, but I miss the old school days of RUclips when you could just be creative, make stuff you like, find your niche, and people would watch. RUclips has just become the next generation of the film/tv industry now imo, and although I respect those, and all forms of media I just miss the golden OG days of RUclips like 2009-2014. But again this coming from a guy who has 3 dead channels now I do appreciate these videos because they still give me hope, just got to keep adapting/evolving/and start the creative grind from scratch again. Thanks for the content Ed.

The OG era was actually 2007, absolutely no rules and a fantastic platform where you could find litteraly everything at any given time, youtube has become too ''intelligent'' but yet not really because i wish i was surprised instead of being offered a video i watched 12 times already, anywayz

What I've learned about getting viewers - if I show any clothed body part in a thumbnail my views double. Many gals create half naked images for a thumbnail but it won't be seen in the video itself. I have no desire to mislead viewers for more views but for those comfortable with it - just show some skin baby! HAHA!

Thanks for posting these creative ways to explain such simple concepts. It's very helpful! As for original content (and not the most amazing production quality) being successful... I think it's still possible, it's just like he says in the video, find out how to present the stuff people want to see or "trending" idea but relevant to your content. Idk how to explain that better. Anyway, thanks for giving THIS girl inspiration to grow her channel! 😉

Makes me feel like why am I bothering to edit and put so much work into MY videos when it's literally getting me nowhere. I've been uploading videos to RUclips for 16 years ( guitar lessons ). Way back when I first started, I could upload a video and it would get hundreds of thousands of views, without even trying. Now I'm lucky if I get five thousand views on a video, even though the quality of my videos are way way better when I first started. I just don't know what to do any more, lol. You also have to consider that amount of videos that are being uploaded to RUclips now; about 500 hours per minute, that's a crazy amount! Uploading a single video to RUclips would be like a drop of water going over Niagara Falls. For every guitar lesson song I upload, there are probably at least a hundred other videos of the same song out there. There's just so much competition now.

Only thing I can add to this is keep going, if you're a creator out there ans are truly passionate about it, don't let slow growth stop you from chasing your dream. Of course this is much easier said then done and I still haven't figured it out yet but I will keep trying to improve and hope you can do the same alongside myself.

@@ChuckHaney Couldn't agree more, as cliche as it sounds youtube really does come down to how bad you want it, are you willing to make tons of content with few views while of course following general stuff like good vids, thubnails etc. and if it doesn't work out I want to make sure it wasn't my fault that it didn't work out.

    • @SiMeGamer
      @SiMeGamer 2 года назад +2

If you are passionate, you'll keep going. That's pretty much the whole point of the concept of passion. Views don't matter very much to passionate people in terms of content creation. It could matter to them financially, but it doesn't affect the passion for creation one bit. If a person loses passion for making videos, it's because they lost the passion for the craft, not just depressed because of the numbers. If you take your time and make well crafted things, then the people who share the interest will follow. People who like Yu-Gi-Oh! don't care give a damn about production value. If someone adds it, great, it will be appreciated, but nobody comes for the quality of production unless that's the point (channels that produce hq montages/short films). I had a very niche audience because I had a very niche style of videos (showcasing Japanese comics that I got) and I tried to put in more quality or do some fun/interesting things to elevate it, even superficially, ever so slightly. But none of that mattered. I care about quality. If I didn't, I'd still upload videos because people would come regardless. But RUclips was never something I wanted to make a career. I don't care too much about video making. I care about learning and understanding things and when I was really into these comics (I still am but time and storage space kinda halted it for now) I wanted to share it and practice my spoken English. Now that I found a job through it (I animate advertisements for these comics) I speak English more than any other language pretty much so that purpose of the videos is over and since I care about quality and still haven't finished preproduction on an older video, I'm not making anything else because that was never the passion.
I'm currently passionate about creating dynamic personalized data bases and calculation simulators, so all my creative energy is going towards that. When you are passionate, you don't stop. The number of views you get is not a passion because it has nothing to do with creation. That's just psychology and analytics and most people don't care about that as a science. It's superficial attachment. An obsession rather than passion. People who make RUclips videos and want to make it their career, need to first and foremost care about making videos.
There is a great video called The Toolbox Fallacy and to quote it "a writer writes". If you care. If you are passionate. You'll do something about it. This also applies to things like charity. People love to contempt the rich about not donating or caring about various causes, while they themselves are not doing anything to help. That's not care or passion. That's just following a trend (a moralistic one on this example).
Don't tell people to keep going. If they care, they'll keep going. If they don't, good, let them move more towards what they actually care about or try to find it out if they don't know yet. "Keep going" should only apply to those who feel inadequate doing the things they love, not those who lose passion for something they ultimately don't really care about.
Make the stuff you want, people. Make the thumbnails and titles you think are nice, not other people. Stop with the vague clickbait. Make us click because we care and not just plain curiosity unless that's the point. At the moment, I avoid these like the plague because I can see how dishonest it is. Reason I clicked on this video is because I had it recommended for a long while now despite me avoiding it so I decided to finally give it a watch since the subject matter is already something I'm a little curious about (from discussions with other people) and if it was so heavily recommend still after all this time, I guessed it was beloved so perhaps it is good. It was alright.
      "A writer writes."

My advice to RUclipsr's is do it for fun, make the best video you can and accept you are never going to make a living from it, never allow the algorithm to dictate your video content, do what you enjoy doing.

I’m sure you’ve mentioned this at some point but I would love an honest breakdown of how much time in hours that you spend on each part of your videos: thumbnail, creation, editing, etc - it seems often we are given the final results without actually telling us how HARD it would be - and so we (I) take the advice but don’t get the same results - and I think a key piece is us knowing - just how much time someone like you spends on this…I really think knowing that would help us evaluate our own work honestly.

Not to be cynical, but content creators in the "How to Grow RUclips" niche aren't gonna say that because everyone would be terrified by how much work it is. Would you really want to start a RUclips channel if someone told you "For each video, I spend 4 hours on the thumbnail, three hours on filming, 9 hours on editing and even before that, the planning and research phase for keywords and topic ideas is about 2-3 hours each week". People would stop watching and stop making channels. Which is bad for RUclips and bad for these content creators-their channels won't grow. So everyone keeps quiet and lets the myth continue....works for the cc, they get views and subscribers, and works for RUclips-they get moar content to put ads on.

The way some channels grow over night with a couple of videos with tons of comment they don't acknowledge, tons of likes and blow passed the much-needed subscribers is incredible to me. I started my channel this year, I think in February I just now reached 1000 subscribers and 4000 watch hours which took over 20,000 views to accomplish. I think I have posted 25 videos in 8 months and have not posted in over a month and a half because of health issues, I am 70, I will find the time this week to do a few more videos, yesterday I finally created a playlist something I had neglected to do and hope to finish that and than keep those lists up to date. But back to the 1st of my comments and those that become stars overnight.....something smells fishy. Or are they paying youtube to boost their channel??

Absolutely LOVE your content. It's really helped me to pinpoint ways to do better content on my channel and make videos more fun and interesting. So when I say this, it's with complete respect. You might want to review this video and check the audio levels between the different sections and mics you were using. The balance was off and there was a lot peaking with the audio even in the VO sections and was turning up and down the volume while listening. Plenty of tip videos on RUclips for balancing your audio but if you need any tips, not that you'd need any from me but I do video production and editing for a living and have had some great audio guys that have pointed me in the right direction to quick ways to balance everything.

And after all is said and done, if RUclips doesn't suggest it, none of this matters. Eg 1 i have two video on another channel released one day apart. Retention is the same, clickthrough rate is the same but RUclips has suggested one of them 100 fold more than the other and the results are accordingly. Eg 2 video with 17% clickthrough rate vs video with 9% clickthrough and after 10k suggestions of the high clickthrough YT just stopped sharing it, but kept sharing the other one. Same topic similar thumbnails, similar length, similar retention and engagement. YT killed the higher performing video. I feel like these tips you give out are so incredibly meaningful, yet I feel like there's also a lot of tips I just cant seem to use considering I'm the "generic RUclips gamer".
There's such a difference in creating "original content" and creating "gaming content" to me, like you'd need to reinvent sliced bread to blink out.
I really wish I knew how to be more creative or funny but honestly I think I'm just gonna be hardstuck😆

Same here I was starting out to do gaming but then I saw literally no growth and I started to become worried and I thought if it was me who was the problem and well yeah...LOL I can confidently say I'm not interesting lol so I'm sort of switching to reactions. I still want to do gaming and what I'll ask myself is this..."what will my viewers gain from watching this" (for example knowledge of some sort of thing of a game, could be just to have a laugh and make the person feel better, etc) "what can I do that is different that I could bring to the game" (bring challenges to the game: Minecraft But i have to....| Call of duty but i can only... I mean just go wild LOL. Just bring something new and fresh especially if your planning to play old games. "What are my competitors NOT doing that I could potentially take advantage of" I'm changing my editing style and adding stock images as I'm explaining what's going to happen in the video because I'm doing the game Wrestling Revolution 3D its old and I was just uploading my gameplay but then I was like no one wants to see this LOL so I decided to switch it up and brought challenges "One Punch = One Spoonful of hot sauce" "WR3D but I have to beat every match under 5 minutes". I'm not having any results because like I said I'm slowly switching to being a reaction but I am planning to do gaming but I am fourtanetly focusing on one reaction category and it is reacting to EDM artists so maybe iIll do something that has to do with music and bring it to WR3D. The advice I gave may or may not help but its at least something :)

find a game you really like and are naturally good at. then watch other channels in that space, and figure out what information they are not providing, that you could produce. the more specific the better. for example, i make videos about building in Sons of the Forest. this is niche within a niche, and the other youtubers did not have the information i knew i could provide. i don't have the most explosive growth, but i did get 1000 views in the first week, starting from nothing, with almost zero production value

A lot of these are things I learned about running a start-up. And honestly, that's the mindset you should have.
We've gone past the point of "record what you're passionate about and eventually you'll grow". RUclips doesn't care about that anymore because it's not making them money. The only good thing that's come out of this is that the algorithm has learned to reward quality evergreen content instead of clickbait.
If you want to grow on RUclips, you have to treat your channel like it's a business. And if that's not for you, then I'm sorry but you're probably too late.

    Very good video.
But for a begginer youtuber, I think that not only the theory is important and also practice. I've learn 60-65% from my own experience. Of course your videos are very educational and helpful but also practice and own experience and analysis is very important.
For example, by mistake I manage to have 2 videos with 10k views (long videos not short ones). With your help and other educational channels I understand why, but the fact I had the experience on my own I manage to understand better than only theory :)
Honestly my first aim on my channel was to create a community, because my target is quite small, but there is not so much competition. And I am happy to see that I have comments and engagement from my viewers.
Firstly I was not sure about my target public and started with the wrong idea and public target, and after 4-5 videos I switched my direction. And now after 15-16 video I still looking to find my style and experiment what is working and what not. I think after 1 year and more videos and analytics I will now for sure on which way to go.
Because I don't have any real competition on my niche, I really need to educate, find and attract the public which will like my type of content. Actually the public needs to discover my content.
So now I am plan to attract new viewers, but i nthe same time to not lose the current fans.

I've seen young channels in woodturning that have shot past me in growth and I cannot see that it's due to thumbnails, creativity, planning, copycatting or research. There must be other factors within the algorithm, that probably work in combination with these 5, but something difficult to discern and repeat.

That's where the algorhitmus at least to some extent dictates the audience. Because if a video goes viral and a lot of people subscribe because of that video, then the audience just grows in that direction.
Hopefully it was a video of the main content of your channel, because if a channel is not monothematic, that can get quite a hick hack. Because then you have to decide in which direction you want to go - at least if you want to grow as fast as possible. At least that's the case on my German channel.

If I could vent just a bit, I keep watching all this stuff about avatars and research, etc, And I have no doubt that it's all solid advice. My problem is I keep seeing fast-growing channels that I know haven't done any of this. My sister's channel is one example. All she does is cook in her kitchen, being her absolute authentic self. Her videos are long, she rambles a lot, shares a lot of personal info. Her videos don't have any great lighting or sound, she only uses her phone and doesn't really do much editing at all.
She certainly hasn't sat down and created an avatar, and I seriously doubt she pays much attention to her analytics. But in 3 years she has amassed over 20,000 subscribers, and was monitized in the first hear. Similarly, one of my first videos, which was terribly shot, too dark to see for half of it and has only 30% retention, continues to get pushed by youtube and remains one of my most popular videos. Nobody can tell me why that video performs so well. Meanwhile videos that are much better looking. much tighter and getting retention over 50% are moving slow.
Not trying to blame everything on RUclips but it does seem that over time they continue to make it harder to succeed. Like adding an additional step to the subscribe process, making it harder for people who subscribed to see that you've posted new content. Then the 4000 watch hours thing.
The last time I had a channel I made crappy-looking videos where all I did is sit at a desk and talk. I didn't upload regularly at all, sometimes going months between uploads. But that channel got monitized had 5000 subscribers before I finally abandoned it. When they notified me I had made partner I didn't even know what that meant. So I don't know man. I'm not discouraged because I'm doing what I'd be doing anyway without a channel. But there's just too much out there that contradicts what most experts say you have to do to be successful on the platform; too many successful channels not doing any of it.

Entirely valid points that will definitely help any channel where the main objective is to grow audience and potentially ad revenue. In other words it is great marketing advice. The problem is when marketing advice informs creative decisions. We've seen this before in TV and movies find something that has worked and flog it to death.
Perhaps the best advice is to find the FIRST person that came up with, to use your example, the orange jump suit and work out how they came up with that idea rather than copy it in some way. My guess is that they had a large enough audience or just didn't care about audience and did what they felt was a good idea.

There's nothing more frustrating and irritating to me than channels like yours that always tell others to change the gravitational constant of the universe, like we're all a bunch of Q's who can just do something, anything, like watching a how to video will collectively make us better vloggers and our channel will grow. Create great content, create thumbnails that make others want to click. Create content that makes people watch longer, engage with your viewers, blah, blah, like oh damn, why didn't I think of that? And for those who try to get more views for monetary purposes?? It takes more than that to make any significant money on RUclips anyway!

Not sure if watching all these "how to grow your channel" video's and reading all the comments is motivating or demotivating.. They all give the same tips anyway.
I think just focussing on creating content YOU like will work best in the long run, mentally too because it's a headache trying to keep up with the thumbnails, titles, tags, keywords and what not to beat the algorithm
