- During a visit to Q-Tip's New Jersey home, Gayle King takes a look at the hip hop legend's vinyl collection. After an 18-year break, the founding member of A Tribe Called Quest is releasing the group's final album, "We got it from Here...Thank You 4 Your Service."
As a collector... I can tell you that Q-Tip was a little bothered when she just started pulling records out.
zsantschi he understood soon she's absolutely ignorant about music and worst than that...clearly not interested at all... embarrassing situation for an artist and us, music lovers lol.
Haha! A little on the outside, but I'm sure inside was a different story
Exactly. I cringed so bad. Imagine if she just started pulling them out of their sleeves and stuff.
Yes that golden you never touch no one personal treasure that has taken years and years to build!!!
zsantschi Yes It was written all over his face
When Q-Tip offers to DJ at your next party you say YES.
Alexander Mathew Fr. His Abstract Radio show on Beats 1 is lit 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Alexander Mathew For her reply to be "let me hear it" I don't think she really knows what DJing is smh.
I reckon, wtf woman.
That is why she is interviewing Q Tip....People!!! For Her and Others to learn his craft. It's amazing that he was in CBS This Morning, being seen Worldwide at 40 Something. That is Respect!!! But you all want to put down the Black Women and call her a Bitch. Men grow up and respect Black Women, step up and support Black Women, Protect Them. smdh
I get what you're trying to say but no one called her a bitch.
This is so cringy! Q-tip, patience of a saint
@Leshawn 71 -- Oprah's best friend gets the hook-up = no talent or skill required.
I mean the lady was just curious , and as a vinyl collector beginner myself , i would bugout Tip just by lookin his crazy collection....
Nah but im patient too so maybe im missing something
He reminds me of Conroy
I mean... WHAT!? That was awful! She's askin' about the Beatles!!! Didn't ask him about some random unknown GEM he may have and then not even reacting about him offering to DJ! That woman was ON ANOTHER PLANET!
Tip's reaction when she asks "so you collect these because you think the sound is better?" 😂
I felt the pain & awkwardness lmao. My soul shed a tear.
@@Cello21777 I felt the pain in my mind, heart and soul. Kinda like a cyclops in a china shop she was.
3:14 was awkward too, she doesn’t know how to have a conversation lol
He dust know what to say or it caught him off guard lol
He’s a Sonos ambassador, so obviously an akward question for him to answer
It's like an awkward first date at his place.
🤣😂
that's because he's a real person and she isn't
I agree.
And last date. I don’t think he will ever get a dj invite either?
LOL
When Tip asks you if he can DJ for you you say, "Yes please". Immediately. Do not stop. Do not hesitate.
Q. Tip, you can gladly DJ my next party. No questions.
Guess youve never seen him DJ 🤷♂️
This is just painful to watch. This woman has no clue about music, who she is dealing with or the depth of the man she is speaking with. Amazing to get an opportunity to see his setup but, damn, CBS dropped the ball.
I dont care for her at all
I mean... what was she supposed to say?
She's got body for an old doll.
Although he has little to no country music records? Maybe he needs to explore his own mind first
@@yell0wberry
Do you own any underground hip hop records?
Lady - "Wheres your country?"
Q-tip - "I don't have country.."
Be more like Q-tip kids
lol there's some good country though, just not that radio crap
Josue De La Torre Yeah I'm with you on that, I'm a huge Johnny Cash fan
the closest i'd come to listening to country is maybe some bobby womack.
He actually clarified and said that it was nestled in his rock section. Q-Tip is waaay to eclectic to exclude a whole genre just on reputation.
Michael Pantzlaff If you like Johnny Cash check out the Notorious Cash
She never said yes wtf, she’s obviously not a fan. He’s legendary . Respect hip hop
🗣️ Exactly
When somebody asks you why you collect vinyl ... say good bye.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Word! 😄
Why do you..?
@@martincrown8616 Good bye, Martin.
@@rincewind841 i left it at "..?"
The lady with so many phony questions,it's like she almost by mistake there.
Embarrassing cornball
"Hey, do you have any Beatles?" Worst record collector question ever.
yeah, couldve sent someone whos actually remotely interested in music
Let her live like damn smh
van chi
?... :) Do you really think she sleeps bad, because of our comments?
Funny to see that Tip didn't like that lady to look trough his records haha, real collectors are that way!
Very cool to finally (vinylly haha) see his collection!
i just think it was pretty evident to him that she didn't know enough about collecting to even appreciate the hobby. im sure he'd been more receptive to her had she been more receptive of his hobby, and asked some better questions.
Yeah tbh I think he read that she wasn't going to go to any of the shelves with the heavy weights on them
MAARTN bo
I know the feeling I have about 300 plus CDs and still adding I dont like people touching my collection I'm picky about my music
MAARTN ok “vinylly” is pretty corny
Smh she doesn’t realize she’s talking to a living legend.
Did anyone else cringe on the inside when she just started pulling out random records.
I liked that he pushed it back in, I'd do that too
giggidy!
Armanjot Bhangu
GOD I HATED WHEN SHE DID THAT
nope
Q-tip looks likes he hated her moving his vinyl around
I don't blame him, she part dissed him.
That’s a good way to get your fingers broken at my house.
@@danieldaniels7571 ... hahahaha!!!
I know how he felt ,I wouldn't touch but would let him do it
@@dreameryoung38 I’m cool with another record collector who asks first, because I know they’ll respect my wax, its organization, and place the record back exactly as found when done looking. Or ask me a good question about it. But just grabbing? Nope.
I wish Sway would have done this interview; someone who actually knows what hip-hop is.
The ideal candidate or either Soren Baker he would have given a great interview
Tip lost a lot of records when his house burned down, otherwise he'd have way more records than that.
Tony Jones really? I've never heard of that.
The fire happened back in 1994, IIRC. His entire collection went up. Must’ve been thousands of records.
I was going to ask, because he said he lost around 20k records in that fire...that must have broke his soul😔
That's good to know because I definitely was waiting for the room to suddenly turn to an open space with his massive collection because this is far from massive for a typical DJ or sampler from the 90's era.
Glad the fire only effected property not human life.
Tony Jones rip collection.
Q-Tip is one of hip hop's greatest and most important MC's and Producers of all time. One Love !!
Gayle: "Do you DJ?, "Let me hear it". LMFAO!! She has no idea.
"Let me hear it"? Does Gayle even know what a DJ is?
"Do you have any Beatles?". Do you actually know who you're talking to?
Would have been great if he said 'No, but I got The Rutles. A test pressing in fact.'
I guarantee he has a lot of good hits, hip hop, R&B, rock. All of it
Everyone has beatles lol like he said real like him look for obscure music not biggest bands in the world
When I saw the interview years ago, I wondered why she was chosen for this. I cringe even more now. She knew nothing about this man and his impact on hip-hop and it showed.
y'all are snobs
@@PHlophe It beats being clueless.
@@PHlophe No this is just a genuinely terrible interview.
@@PHlophe 👉🤡🗑️
Those shelves are BEAUTIFUL!!!!
He's better than me! I have over 500!!!
Seriously, you somehow get invited to take a look at the collection of Q-Tip (One of the greatest Hip-Hop producers of all time & one of the most knowledgeable & intelligent collectors ever) to go look at the Beatles section of his collection. Don't get me wrong thank you for exclusive, I'll probably watch about this 20 more times just to see as much as possible but you go in that room to check out a bunch of Beatles reissue. The things I could learn with just an hour in that room. Trust me I'm gonna come out there knowing he's got more than the Beatles catalog. I noticed that Zytron LP. I got that somewhere in the basement.
she doesnt know music. All she knows is the beatles. Point is, they got the wrong reporter for the job
tiquedilla21
All the records she went to look at where white men's records. It can mean anything but thats what she did. Blahh
I wish I cool enough to a series where I interview artists about their record collection, kind of like Crate diggers. I just want to hear these people TALK about their music, and learn stuff from them. Damn. We need crate diggers back at the very least
RIGHT? I was bothered too. I was interested in other stuff he might have
I don't think she understands how anything he does works
Durrr, do a music please
They should've gotten someone else... You haven't done your homework, if you don't know that Tip is a DJ, an amazing producer and rapper... I would through a party just so he could DJ.
Gayle and Oprah don't have any idea of the greatness in his musical ability and it's almost embarrassing a big journalist like Gayle King is just that dense
"Do you have any Beatles?"
this relationship is over
Ivan well he did have a bunch of Beatles records
@ivan, I like the way you think.
I take it you think autotune is considered music. It's not.
The Beatles is cool
Davis, Coltrane, Mingus > Beatles
I wanna hang out with Q-Tip man, he seems so chill, also his voice is soothing somehow.
0:27 . XD "your teenage years ? you had vinyl collection like this" his face , XD
He caught the fake smalltalk right away and tried to nudge her... But it's all she had.
Gayle discussing records with Q-Tip is like Chandler Bing chopping it up with Cornel West
Tip aint no joke on the collection! Real music lovers get it in! And vinyl is final, never fake! Peace!
💯💯🔥
CDs are better but you are not ready for that conversation
The wrong person is down there asking the record digging questions. I imagine Amoeba records youtube channel doing this. Or mass appeal.. not good morning america
CBS This Morning. But I agree with you.😃
Q Tip is a legend, I can't wait.
*Happy Sigh* He is still ssooooo good looking. I've had a major crush on Q-Tip forever!
Ikr
How the fuck you gonna go to Q-Tips house, ask about country music, and bee-line for the fucking Beatles section. Black card REVOKED
we invented this shit ✊🏿
LMFAO!!!!
She's been hanging out with white crowd too long on CBS.....she even thinks that's her real hair lol
I'm white and I would never hang with this square either. that collection is incredible
When you get to heaven it's literally just Q-Tip inviting you over to this house for dinner
Q-Tip is definitely in my top 10 MC's of all time! Rest Easy Phife Dawg!!
Goes to Q-Tip's huge 9K vinyl collection full of awesome insight on how diverse of a listener Q-Tip is... and the interviewer gravitates to the Beatles originals. Don't get me wrong, those are cool, but damn! They ought to have sent in someone who really understood Q-Tip as an artist so they get into himself as a listener. The potential.
Q Tip didn't like her touching his records lol!! I feel him though I'm same way.. "Don't be touchin my records!!" hahahahah!!
I havent started collecting vinyl yet I still have CDs been buying them since I was 13 in 1995. I have over 300 plus CDs I'm picky about my music they have to be in a certain order I will know what is missing.
It's great to see great artist's have a passion and an eclectic taste for music.
Massive respect to Q-Tip!
Q-Tip is a real music afficianado. We know who we are and enjoy our various musical genres. Nothing like pure listening pleasure.
I have to agree with some of the other comments regarding the interviewer, that was just plain embarrassing, good grief! Those questions were lame to the nth degree, 'This reminds of me of a teenage years!' - you could tell Q-Tip knew she was an idiot at this point big time unsurprisingly, 'Sometimes you DJ by yourself?' - what the hell?? She doesn't have any understanding of people's attachment to music, record collecting and DJ culture. Man, get someone who actually has an interest in this stuff smh...
as a dj i can say Q-tip was serious about booking her next party.. hahaha, he was really trying to book a gig during that interview. side note: i saw Q-tip rock a concert as the only MC and dj for his self. he ran to the turntables mixed a intro then dropped the beat then ran to the front of the stage rock it ...then ran back to mix the next song. wow that was amazing.
Gayle probably be like,"I collect my music on ITunes."
Tip's voice is so smooth like damn
“Do you have any Beatles?” “Do you have any idea who you’re talking to?”
That Roy Ayer in the corner tho.
Fresh2Def1989 you saw it too!?! 😀😀😀
Right! #everbodylovesthesunshine
When Q-tip offered to DJ her next party and she asked to hear his skills first, I almost tossed out my computer.
When Q-tip ask you if he can DJ your party, you just say "yes please!".....wtf?...Edit: I see I wasn't the first to notice...:D
Yeah lady talk to a hip hop legend about the beatles lol
He’s a fraud collector as well as someone who is naïve about real music. Bands like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones got their influence from a lot of black musicians and such wouldn’t exist without the influence of black musicians. Perhaps Q-tip needs to open his mind a little more
@@yell0wberry you are ignorant lol
@@yell0wberry He's a well read emcee, plus very well respected producer. I'm sure he knows what you think he doesn't
@@yell0wberry Talk about being salty lol. Bringing race into it is extra lame.

KING Q-TIP!!!
Such a shame that somebody with real interest and knowledge in Q-Tip and Vinyl didn't do this interview
I live in Lisbon Portugal, I know for a fact that Q-Tip is a good dj also, how come she is american, a reporter and have no clue he is also a dj!?
She's Oprah Winfrey's Best Friend....That Says Enough......
Yep
David Meireles
I honestly don’t think Americans have the same attachment to music that other countries do. So many American musicians tour internationally because touring in The US isn’t lucrative/exciting. Although Mexico and Canada seem to care about music. Canada even gives regular grants for the arts while the US is just as wealthy but musicians are struggling. I don’t know what it is
She is not part of the culture. She lo-key hates it.
Peep how she's not even looking at him when she asks him to hear him dj lol...
I remember when Tip lost his original record collection in a fire. This woman seems bored out of her mind.
Q-Tip look like he dont want her touching his records 😆
OMG who is this woman??? the worst reporter ever!! hurts to watch! while TIP is just so sweet and dope! she did not even look him in the eyes! brrrrr
JoBee Project maybe she gotta crush lol
She’s Oprah Winfrey’s “friend”, Gayle
he be sounding like MJ now lol
I think he’s always been a little bit quiet
He got the dope collection lol
Watching This, I Feel Like a Kid In a Candy Store. More Videos Please! More Q-Tip Please! More Tribe Please!!!!
3:13 that red album is roy ayers's vrigin ubiquity. Tip is a real one for having that
Didn't even notice it the first time over my cringing.
*collection of over 9000 records*
"HeY dO YoU HaVe AnY BeAtLeS?"
I've been in love with this man since 1995. Blessings papa💕
1:34 Nice, he's got Shades of Deep Purple (Deep Purple's first album).
So do I. It was on Tetragramatron Records, which was owned by Bill Cosby.
I dont have country lol
I wouldn't disregard 70's country, it does have some great grooves.
I Have John Denver, Charley Pride,Kenny Rogers,Willie Nelson And Loretta Lynn
He doesn't have a country section, but has them mixed in with his rock records.
+LordDigz12 *nestled
And I thought I had a ton of records 😂
It's on my bucket list to have a collection like that.
"Do you have any Beatles?" 😂🤣🤣🤣
Yo this is one of my Favourite interviews I have seen, Q Tip one of Hip Hops All time greats, if you check all is previous albums creative works they are all of a high quality, timeless musical creativity.
I LOVE Q-TIP!!
Rad collection. Interviewer was annoying.
Q tips collection is just Dope! I would love to peek through those collectables!!
I cannot wait to hear this album, I hope they win a Grammy next year. They are pioneers and it's long overdue.
illlmatic 4 life True
Grammy????......Let's Be Realistic. If They Do Get ONE It Would Be Underlined Based Upon The Death(Memory) Of Phife.....Real Talk!

OK, but they definitely deserve a place on the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, it would be a crime to not acknowledge and celebrate their influence on the culture.
illlmatic 4 life I Feel That The Native Tongues As A Collective, Should Be Inducted..
He has all those records and she's geeking out over the Beatles lol
Him touching the grooves on that flexi had me shook
some beautiful gems
That is his peace right there. Some people have a room dedicated to their shoes, some people have one for movies and some with like vintage toys etc.
New album is a masterpiece
But Madlib said he has around 50k vinyls and Pete Rock said 20k vinyls. No disrespect to the great Q-Tip.
Q-Tip would likely have 30K by now if he didn't lose his preveous collection and recorded projects in a 1998 house fire.
+Pierre Sanon wow that's crazy. Thank you for telling me that.
Madlib and Pete Rock are literally gods.
Frank Amador I don't think it matters who has the most, I think it's about who has the best selection. Lol I think Q tip gottem there
+Dezz Carter it's true but you have Madlib & PR, who goes to places around the world and doesn't leave without going crate diggin'.
The is the Greatest Vibe; Absolutely Beautiful the Harmony of Vinyl Records this is a Vault of Greatness!!!
Yeah Tip, glad that he rebuilt his collection from the collection he lost in fire. 👍
Q tip can DJ at my next party, any of my future weddings, whatever, no questions asked
You have the chance... To see q-tip greatest secret vinyls of an entire life, he could speak for days about albums and music...
And you look for Beatles.
Great collection!
Love the vinyl sound
Holy crap! Tip listens to Flamin Groovies?!
And now I wanna see his turntable and hifi set up
As a former Dj i own about 7thousand albums and 12 inch singles i collected over the years.Im feeling sad rite now because im about to sell my whole collection.Kudos to Tip..It ain't nuthin like the 'Ol Skool!
I remember seeing him on my lunch breaks near 23rd Street. Back in the day there used to be a vinyl store down on 23rd Street.
I could only imagine what his collection would've been like if he never had that fire...
LordDigz12 there was a fire?!
curly sue
Yeah in '98 Tip had a fire at his house. He lost his vinyl collection and a bunch of masters to unreleased Tribe tracks.
This aint even all of it. He lost the first collection in a fire. I love how passionate this man is about his craft.
Just seeing this specific interview of Mr. Q-Tip's vinyl collection by Gayle ( who has scant know how of the real art form of black music). Amazing collection though and I am really impressed and proud of his attention to detail and organization. I do recall Q-Tip DJing often at the Irving Plaza joint in Manhattan. Last but not the least, I used to purchase lots of vinyl from a gentleman who was normally frequented by Jazzy Jeff and DJ Todd Terry back in the nineties.
This is great!!!!!!!!!! As a fan of Music!!!!! Q Tip Hip-Hop legendary
You know that feeling when someone is out of touch and it has nothing to do with age? Here we have it. Do you have any Beatles?
I love Q-Tip's hair. Buddha style!
Beautiful collection Q
Q-TIP IS AN ABSOLUTE AMAZING MAN. GOD BLESS.
that first one at 0:09 is Milton Nascimento (1969), amazing record, it got a song called "Beco do Mota", definitely worth it!
Pedro Henrique Lima Yes! Because of Tip, I learned about Milton and Elis Regina!

1:16 Always cracks me up idk why😂🤣
I was laughing about that too 😂
Q-Tip: Lemme DJ your next party.
