I don't care what road you take us down. You are a great person and I enjoy listening to whatever you have to talk about. Thank you. I wish I lived closer to you, so I might enjoy your company.
The cafeteria at my high school had a massive drop ceiling. In every tile were many #2 pencils that got flung up and stuck into the ceiling by the points. :)
Scoutcrafter, I have been watching your channel for quite some time and I always learn something new and interesting. I don't feel the guilt of wasting time on RUclips watching your channel Thank you for making my days better than the previous! I would rate this as one of the best channels on RUclips. Great job and keep up the great work!
That last pencil sharpener, I wish I had that. Mechanically is soo nice. I love the precision and fit-ment of todays tools, but the vintage models have soo much more character, craftsmanship, and quality built into them. pencils are really great, a dry lube if your in a pinch, wood to burn in a pinch, the eraser as a temporary bumper, again, in a pinch. Overall, im real happy I found this channel, keep it coming, the info is quality.
I have decided I will put $5 in a jar every time I watch a Scoutcrafter video. For sure it will cost me money at some point - I am now the owner of three Blackwing pencils...
When someone says this is the best pencil sharpener ever, I have my doubts. However you're absolutely right. It is A thing of beauty and simplicity and you get A faceted point. Beautiful!
This might be in my top 10 ScoutCrafter of all times!! I've never made a list. But off the top of my head Plierench, 3 Acetate Screwdrivers, Utica gas pliers and leather, Soft Blow Hammers, Embury Luck-E-Lite, Deflection and 420, Harbor Freight Tour, Charles Parker Vise & Monarch Vise (tie), Most Awesome Screw Driver, The 3 Lubricant Videos (tie). Ok I cheated a little with the top 10 list because of the ties lol. It still pains me because I am missing so many. But I've watched all of those videos hundreds of times. I enjoy them so much. I must watch at least a half a dozen old ScoutCrafter videos every day lol
I was a kid in the 70's and 80's and used the classic wood pencils. What changed for me was the availability of affordable mechanical pencils. Pentel makes great ones to this very day: P203, P205, P207, P209 with lead of .3, .5, .7, and .9 millimeter diameter. I learned drafting before CAD/CAM so having different diameter lead meant quicker drawing. I still have these four models to this day and use them daily. As for those wide-angle points, I need to get a sharpener to do that since I have dozens and dozens of golf pencils that I keep in the garage/shop.
Amazing pencil sharpener. I've started restoring antique tools. Thank you for the videos, I have done some cool pieces so far and I would have been clueless without your videos
I am a lefty, my teachers would get mad because I smeared my hand across what I just wrote and the test sometimes wouldn't read correctly and they would have to hand check it.
Another good one sir. My favorite pencil has been the Dixon Tri-conderoga. Similar to the tri-write but black. Only problem is finding a small sharpener that does not try to twist to one side jamming the pencil against the blade. I've put pencil to paper to design my own.
I collect antique billheads and reciepts! So many are all done in pencil and everything is perfectly readable well past 125 years. When I worked on pipe organs you always signed the inside of a wind chest with pencil. You added your name and a date in pencil because it would last forever!! I am proud that my name is on the inside of several wind chests in the organ at St. Pat's in NYC amongst others! Pencils are the best!
Wow, I really enjoyed that. In my workshop I have one the same as we had at school with a dial on the front with holes in it for the different size pencils and a handle on the back that you wind. It’s all metal and has two rotating cylinders with little grooves in them to do the sharpening. Been using it for years. My favourite, well at least it was until I saw yours, is a plastic one I picked up at a dollar store. It’s a little V twin engine with a clear front so as you sharpen the pencil the pistons and con rods go up and down. Anyway keep up the great videos. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺
I got a new pencil every year for school and that pencil lasted the whole year. I either had great pencils or I didn't do much work. But your right, the wood and the led were so much better. You have a great collection of sharpeners.
I am glad you covered this. I found a Faber castell 9000 6B and I about flipped out as to how smooth it wrote. I immediately began using it for everything. At $2 a pencil it’s pricey but almost a spiritual experience for writing on good paper...
I haven't thought about smencils in years. My elementary school used to use these as fundraisers for our class. They got to be pretty popular among my classmates. That brings back some good memories.
I started using pencils again a few months ago. i also started writing notes again -- on paper, not a cell phone or computer!. I'm glad I did!! Very satisfying to have a good pencil and good paper!
#1 I always learn something from your videos. #2 That last sharpener is truly a work of art. #3 Being a Draftsman (on the board for 20 years before we went computer) I still like the mechanical pencils. #4 I just recently purchased 2 mechanical pencils with 2b leads, the pencils have a sharpener built into the cap, I love the soft lead for woodworking, it will mark the wood without pressing down and will erase easy. #5 A good draftsman never breaks the lead when using a pencil.
Hi Ernie! Years back I bought a few books on mechanical drawing and really enjoyed trying my hand at it... It definitely helped me understand perspective in a whole new way! Thanks!
Reminds me of Grade school Pencil battles ...try to snap your friends pencil before he snaps yours basically...I remember using Huskys, Fairmount and Choice Brands...the Choice Brand was very Bendable...Great Show Scout!!
Bless you Scout Crafter for being an advocate for the pencil! It’s a wonderful thing. I just sold a carton and a half of beautiful early 60’s vintage pencils to an art supply store in Glasgow on eBay. I have all sorts of unusual old pencils mostly artists pencils.
I am 67, I understand 100% about the love of a pencil. I also love mechanical pencils for drawing and fine work, etc. SUPER great video, and that last pencil sharpener, OMG
Scout crafter I'm a young timer that never learned about shop stuff as a kid. I was more interesting on wasting away playing video games. I'm in my mid 20s now and am really appreciative that you take the time to teach us all something new. I'm trying to get up to speed on all the years of shop talk I was disinterested in as a kid
My dad was a freight checker for a printing plant. He spent a lot of time on the docks with the trucks and boxcars. When he started they had pens and they froze in the winter. They would switch to pencils in the winter. I certainly prefer pens but I have to admit that was a really cool pencil sharpener.
What a great journey down pencils/pencil sharpener down the road of history.. Every time, I watch one of your presentations, I come away with knowledge and enjoyment.
Cool stuff Bud!! I have a small collection of old pencils!! It's amazing how many pencil companies were in the US years ago!! Now I think there are only 2, and I think Nixon/Ticonderogas aren't even made here any more!!☺
Fantastic I've been a Blackwing user for many years and tend to hand sharpen the point to a VERY steep angle producing long and fragile lead tips. As an artist this works well , but now that I'm back into woodworking, I have to modify my sharpening techniques to a much shallower angle or short tip. You can Never have too many pencils and quality pencils always work out better in the long run. Thanks for a great video and NO you are not alone in your love for the traditional pencil. Tony
Another great video on an object we don't normally give much thought to. Your knowledge about so many things continues to amaze and entertain me. Who would have thought--a video about a pencil! And bonus info about the pencil sharpener.
I'm glad I'm not the only one. It was just the other day my 13-year-old son's eyes glazed over during a lecture on things taken for granted. Books, paper, pencils, pens...literacy.
You are so right!! Remember when we were kids we couldn't wait to sit at the adult table during holidays? Just to be able to join in the conversation and talk like an adult... Now everyone has their heads in their phones... =)
Great video ScoutCrafter!! That last pencil sharpener is soooo cool!!!😎 When the kids were in elementary school, all we bought we boxes of Ticonderoga pencils but I remember the crappy ones that didn't sharpen well. It's like they weren't really wood. Now all I use are mechanical pencils because you're right, pens are messy and unreliable. Being left handed, the back of my hand was always blue from writing (I don't write with a hook). Of course the same happened with the pencil graphite but at least that washed off easily.
Remember the ones that were just pencil tips in a tube that you kept advancing. The nice thing about the mechanical pencils is they're always sharp. For the regular ones you have to learn to rotate the shaft as you draw. Drafters had to learn this but maybe not anymore because of CAD.
I just sat through 23 minutes of pencilology and was fascinated! Only Scoutcrafter! To give modern kids more appreciation of the wonders of the world we live in I used to tell my science classes that their homework assignment was to, "Go home tonight and make a pencil. for tomorrow" The looks and questions I got showed they were beginning to see reality and how much engineering and workmanship they had not previously appreciated.
I remember watching some of your older videos and seeing this awesome pencil sharpener. At school we used to have those Boston hand crancked sharpeners, school management enventually decided to remove them as they're a bit of a novelty over here and kids would spend hours, if allowed, sharpening their pencils!! As I said before, you are a man of many interests and you're just into collecting collections, I could listen you for hours without ever getting bored!
Yes! We too had the class pencil sharpener at the end of the coat closet! If gone unchecked we could turn a new pencil down to about 3 inches in no time! LOL Thanks!!!!!!
hi scout , great video as always , i think i first saw you doing a tool restoration , but honestly now i come here to see and listen to all your old school wisdom , to be honest i'd watch cooking with scout , gardening with scout etc etc… lovely channel , keep up the great work
When I was a kid in grade school I got a Dixon Ticonderoga by random chance out of a box of used pencils the teacher was handing out, and I still have that pencil to this very day. I realized instally what a great pencil it was and put in my desk and saved it. This was before the internet so I figured I would never get another. But you are right it changed my whole opinion on pencils right at that moment.
John! This was one of my most favorite videos of yours! | too love pencils, always have since I was a kid. I'm probably younger than most of your viewers here, but even so I never bought the pen argument...because there is none! Growing up, when you got to a certain school age writing with a pencil was looked down upon by teachers for some reason, but I always felt more comfortable with pencils, especially as you could erase an error so easily. But a crappy pencil with broken lead is really a curse! I always considered the German Steadtler pencils the best when I was growing up and in primary school. Any time I could get my hands on one I would consider them a luxury and try not to sharpen them too much so they would last! This video reminded me why I always liked pencils, and confirmed to me that I'm not crazy, pencils really are better.
Awesome Video! I agree with others don't really care the subject as long as it's on your channel. It does make me feel better to know someone else obsesses over pencils and sharpeners.
Oddly, this is one of your best videos. The unusual subject with plenty of information to hold interest along with the two very charming vintage sharpeners for a topper. Thanks for this one!
THANK YOU...for sharing. I want one of those sharpeners LOL I learn something new every time you post a video. Never to old to learn. Thanks, my friend.
Great video! I knew a revisit of the coolest pencil sharpener ever would go over well with all the new viewers. That massive pencil sharpener was also impressive.
@@ScoutCrafter its not so bad. The company is still going, basically they moved to a purpose built new factory in a nearby town. www.derwentart.com/en-gb/c/about/company/our-story
OMG. Pencils. I love a good pencil. I use a Ticonderoga Black. But honestly i remember playin pencil snaps on the bus. Remember that? Whos got the strongest pencil. Lol. Man this brought back some good memories. I think a good Boston resto is in order.
Pencil user here. But man Scout that is one amazing sharpener. Something else I have to keep my eyes open for. Thanks to you!!! Lol. Thanks so much for sharing. Just awesome
Coolest pencil sharpener ever! I still use a pencil most every day. Probably a good thing I don't have a sharpener like that......be out of pencil in no time. Thanks for sharing and have a happy day!
Great video Scout, loved that last sharpener! For me, a utility knife and 30 seconds gives me a sharp pencil(old timers taught me this when I was a kid!)
You know ur right I never knew to do that to the vise grip im gonna do same now thanx M.t.A John. You got me looking at pencils now.Your videos really always teach me something new great stuff.ha ha remember we had to use a # 2 pencil for those C.a.T tests in school little circle bubbles filling in.
A side note: you can use the shavings from your sharpener for fire starters. Mix with melted paraffin wax in a small cupcake tin, add a string for a wick fantastic campfire starters. Also has anyone heard of lefthanded pencils? They do exist. The difference is the printing is put on so that when the pencil is held in the left hand, it can be read, rather than being up side down.
I don't care what road you take us down.
You are a great person and I enjoy listening to whatever you have to talk about.
Thank you. I wish I lived closer to you, so I might enjoy your company.
Thanks so much Harry! I bet we would have a blast!
Facts!
Never apologize for your content my friend. Tool restorations are great, but your stories and information is better. Keep on keepin on.
Fantastic video that was amazing thanks for sharing your time and skill and remember#stay safe and make. ☕☕👍👍
ScoutCrafter: "This is the coolest pencil sharpener ever"
Me: "Cool pencil sharpener? Uh huh, okay, sure..."
30 seconds later:
Me: "That is the coolest pencil sharpener ever!"

They are quite smooth, I have un-named advertising pencils that are 50 years old and write smooth as silk. Still! Try that with a Pen! LOL Thanks!
No carpenter's pencil ? Johnny Carson had pencils with erasers on both ends, too drum along with the band

Maybe used paper?

That's heartbreaking to think only 12 years ago it closed down... What a shame.
@@ScoutCrafter its not so bad. The company is still going, basically they moved to a purpose built new factory in a nearby town. www.derwentart.com/en-gb/c/about/company/our-story
Excellent. Thanks for all this info. The last sharpener really is cool and a great example of fine engineering
OMG. Pencils. I love a good pencil. I use a Ticonderoga Black. But honestly i remember playin pencil snaps on the bus. Remember that? Whos got the strongest pencil. Lol. Man this brought back some good memories. I think a good Boston resto is in order.

Hi Bernie! I feel so bad for the youngsters who will never know the joy of a smooth pencil! =) Thanks!
Coolest pencil sharpener ever! I still use a pencil most every day. Probably a good thing I don't have a sharpener like that......be out of pencil in no time. Thanks for sharing and have a happy day!
Hi John! Nobody has to tell you about a good pencil!!!!
Now that is the best pencil sharpener ever . Over a 100 years old, what a find!!!
Great video Scout, loved that last sharpener! For me, a utility knife and 30 seconds gives me a sharp pencil(old timers taught me this when I was a kid!)
Hi VIncent! You know that is a real art! Sharpening a pencil by hand is a SKILL!!!! Outstanding!
One of the cooolest and most informative video on a subject that I have given little thought. Well done. I'm making the switch back to the pencil.
Awesome!!! You will love it! Just get some decent paper too! LOL
WOW it was like seeing an accident, could not look away GREAT video, I now have a whole new appreciation for the pencil
Thanks Mohamed!!!!!
I got some cool pencils in the '90s - instead of wood they were made of recycled blue jeans, recycled dollar bills, and recycled school lunch trays.
Those are cool! Hard to sharpen but cool! =D
You remind me of the Space brothers and Space farms!! Nice collection!
Look at you! All incognito! You know you are part of the reason I am like this! =D
Ahhh on the subject of vise grips this reminds me of my set of Gripso vise grips. Such a fine tool!
LOL Yes! Always a sharp #2 pencil!
Wow! By far the coolest pencil sharpener I have ever seen!! I am going to start keeping an eye out for those now lol
I love that automatic pencil sharpener! Thanks for sharing.
That last sharpener is the best. I want one now. Lol
