I am 70 and I have loved this movie since I first saw it as a child. Elwood is indeed innocence, but innocence learned. "...well for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. You may quote me.", and "I always have a wonderful time, wherever I am, whomever I'm with" are things that he has learned. They are still guidelines for my life. I'm glad you have this film in your life. The more you watch this film the more you will love it.
"I think you're making a mistake about the whiskey but it's your two weeks".
i envy people who experienced the past era... everything was meaningful back then
@@MJoy4FunHave tou seen Lord Of the Rings?
Another really funny oldie is Arsenic & Old Lace. Cary Grant & the lady playing the aunt here are in it.
This was actor Jimmy Stewart's favorite movie he made. Love this movie.
I've loved this movie for decades. James Stewart was wonderful in every movie. Yours is the first reaction I've seen to Harvey and I thank you so much! I always enjoy your reactions. Again, thanks.
Ditto
Same here! glad you enjoyed our reaction!
Jimmy Stewart such a classic actor!
I've loved this movie since I was a kid, my mom was a huge Jimmy Stewart fan. And I've seen it many times but it honestly never even occurred to me that when, at the end, Harvey stays with Dr. Chumley, then moments later comes back to Elwood, that Harvey had stopped time to take Dr. Chumley to Akron! 😯 That makes total sense! I always thought he just changed his mind in minutes. Wow, that makes it an even happier ending, thanks for that insight. 👍
PS- My mom actually saw James Stewart star in "Harvey" on Broadway.
i know right???
I thought the same thing. After all this time, that callback about stopping time never entered my mind. I love that thought! Great movie and reaction.
OMG I love this film Harvey starring by James Stewart. Thank you guys
I have always loved this movie. It brings a tear to my eye because of the kindness and calmness of Elwood. If this world were filled with more people like him, the world would be a much better place. Harvey would be welcome too. James Stewart was such an amazing actor.
This movie is so underrated. Always a good time. Josephine Hull played the character of Veta the best I've ever seen.
(Don't drink with púcas tall enough to join the NBA. They'll get you into all sorts of high jinx and shenanigans.
Great reaction!!!! Josephine Hull, who played Veta, won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her part in this film. She also originated the role on Broadway in 1944.
My favorite of her performances is in Arsenic & Old Lace as Abby Brewster. She plays such a sweet, endearing old lady that it’s so easy to forgive all her many crimes. 😂
I first saw this as a play as a small child in the late 1970s before I was even aware of the film. Such a great film. I need a pookah friend. Everyone does.
Finally someone reacting to "Harvey" !!!! So many people just pass it by...but it's always been a winner !
One of the best fairy tales ever filmed.
Jimmy Stewart was so great.
Glad you're checking some great movies that other channels don't usually watch.
Have you seen _Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House_ ?
Cary Grant and Myrna Loy.
One of the sweetest, most brilliant films ever! My mamá shared this with me as a seven year old and I’ve loved it ever since. Every now and then, we sit and watch this together. First time a 25 year old mother and her seven year old son and now a 78 year old mother and her 59 year old son.
For a second, I thought you meant that every now and then you and *Harvey* sit and watch it together. 😄
12:28 The painting of James Stewart and Harvey-my stepfather (who married my mom when I was 21) had the identical painting in his living room. My mom explained that it was my stepfather's favorite movie and told me that the movie was called Harvey and it was about an invisible rabbit. I have a tremendous amount for my stepfather so I couldn't bring myself to see the movie until this reaction. My stepfather has been dead 30 years now, so this was a good goodbye.
It was the best play that my English teacher had put on!!! He always wanted to do it!!! See above for my comment....
@@zimjun7 As I had stated, my stepfather married my mom when I was 21. He had four kids, who always had their hand out, even though they were older than me. My stepfather and I had a bond in that we were both Marines. The Marines teach you certain values, such as personal reliance. My step sister and I had both car accidents in the same week. I went and got car parts and personally fixed the damage to my car. My step sister, who had nearly identical damage to her car asked her dad for money to have someone else to fix it. He referred her to me. In response, she never spoke to me again.
After that incident, he and I grew closer and his kids became distant to him. When I started college a couple of years later he would surprise me by occasionally calling me over and giving me a hundred bucks (starving college kids always need money and I'm sure he understood that as I worked my way through college and I never asked anyone for money).
When he developed cancer he asked that I stay away as he didn't want me to see him waste away and he wanted me to remember him as he was. I respected his wishes. My one regret is that I wish I could have spent more time with him (when he was healthy). He was the father figure I needed and although he never said it out loud I know he was proud of me.
The only Film that I have ever seen that Makes us want to be a better person, to have what should be infuriating things happen & still be so kind and pleasant is a real accomplishment. Glad yall Enjoyed it.
Seriously, OMG. This is a childhood favorite!!! No one has reacted to this! Thanks guys 🥹
Okay, Bringing Up Baby next!!
@@renee7407I’ve been hoping they’ll watch Arsenic & Old Lace, but Bringing Up Baby is also a great shout!
Oh! My Gawd!!! I played in this!!! In our High School. My English teacher had always wanted to do this one!!!! We were on stage in April of 1969! I played Myrtle May. ( I think I did a better job ) I was more awkward and if I had done it again, I would have worn my glasses, NOT my contact lenses. My teacher chose a certain guy to do Elwood. His voice was perfect, that's why.
Yes! "Elwood P!" let me give you one of my cards." I LOVED IT!!! We had so MUCH FUN!!!!!!!
Can you imagine what the whole world
would be like if we were all PLEASANT like ELWOOD P. DOWD. Fantastic. Someone in the comments mentioned ARSENIC AND OLD LACE. That is another fantastic movie. If you two get a chance, watch it.
Arsenic & Old Lace is one of my absolute favorite movies! I really hope they’ll react to it some day!
I saw you were reviewing Harvey and I felt like it was Christmas morning! I have been wishing for someone to choose this movie. I LOVE IT, and I hape you enjoyed it too!
ditto
Hope you enjoy it!
So glad you rediscovered a classic. There are so many out there that are all but forgotten. If you'd like to check out a couple more I'd love to recommend Arsenic and Old Lace and Bringing Up Baby, both with Cary Grant. Thanks for the reaction.
And Arsenic and Old Lace also featured Josephine Hull, Ellwood's aunt.
I'll check it out! thx!
I have always loved this movie. It was first a stage play. While playing on the stage, a child in the audience kept yelling "There is no one there!" - LOL!! This was way back in the 1950s and they calmed the child down quickly!
I watched this movie because I find the concept of this movie strange but when I finally saw it. I was amazed what a special movie it is.
This was my dad’s favourite movie. He’d always quote the line about “I’m working for the government, making licence plates” 😝😝
I loved your reactions and your thoughts on the movie. It's one of my favorite movies. Elwood P. Dowd is one of my favorite characters in all of the movies I've seen. "In this world, you must be oh so very smart or oh so very pleasant. Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant, and you may quote me." Kindness, friendliness, and warmness inspired by fantasy is better than cold, harsh, mean reality any day. That's the theme of the movie as I see it, and that's why I love the movie.
Absolutely love your reaction. Spot on with my view of this movie. Thanks.
so glad you reviewed this film it's a classic comedy and always one of my dad's favorite films there are no actors like jimmy stewart anymore⚛😀
Tom Hanks comes close
I second that emotion⚛😀@@richelliott9320
It's a Wonderful Life was Mr. Stewart's first movie after serving as a Army Air Corp bomber pilot in WWII European Theater. His emotional acting came in part from the depths of his experience in the war. There is a picture floating around the internet that showed him entering service and a picture of him after his service. You see a happen young man going in and a man who has been worn down by the worse that comes of war coming out. In Harvey, his appearance is much like his before picture, for some who served time maybe a healer.
A remarkable performance by Jimmy in "It's a Wonderful Life" should have won an Oscar for that performance, Jimmy Stewart was haunted by the friends he lost and the people he killed in the bombings of Germany, wonderful actor and a greater human being.
so deep and sad...
@@MJoy4Fun As further respect for Mr. Stewart for his service, is the following.
1. First major actor to volunteer to serve in WWII
2. Promoted from private to colonel in 4 years during his war time service.
3. Total service 26 years (1942-1968) retired as a Brig. General.
To the public he was the movie star, but as a citizen he distinguished himself by his long service in the military. A military service that was all volunteer, you have to respect that.
and remember all you millennials..... Harvey was made before CGI..... Harvey is a practical effect.
I saw this movie decades ago, old person.
@@RexFuturi decades or centuries?
Before any more nasty replies - can't you see the joke here? Good one, @Juande!
Jimmy Stewart is my second favourite actor. My favourite Jimmy Stewart film is “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.”
My Daddy used to laugh so hard when that woman would start Hop, Hop, Hop, Hop, Hipity Hopping.
Thanks for reacting to this, I’ve loved it since I was a kid! The aunt in this movie is also in one of my absolute favorite movies, Arsenic & Old Lace! I really hope y’all react to that one someday. It’s such a funny movie! It stars Cary Grant, who is the star of North by Northwest, and is directed by Frank Capra, who is the director for It’s a Wonderful Life. It’s another one like Harvey that started as a stage play and then was adapted into a movie.
glad you liked it!
we had a blast!
have a great week!
James Stewart was a wonderful actor. So great movies to see with him as a star. He had a very interesting life and it is worth checking him out on the net. Add to that is that he was a very nice, humble and gentle man in real life.
Never understood the reference in Shawshank that Andy made to "Harvey the rabbit" until now.
Trivia: This movie was a favorite of John Landis, director and co-writer of The Blues Brothers. Elwood Blues was likely named as a salute. Also, in The Shawshank Redemption, Andy says that the "imaginary person" he created the false identity for in order to do the money laudering for the warden was a "second cousin to Harvey the Rabbit".
I have loved this movie since I was a kid. And when I was little, because my imagination was in constant overdrive, I could totally see Harvey.
Also, my parents had a white cat when they were first married named Pooka.
bogart and jimmy stewart are my 2 favorite actors. stewart could play in comedies or dramas, westerns or modern themes, he could play tough guys and gentle souls, like elwood p. dowd. one of his best roles was in a 1939 film called "mr. smith goes to washington." he starred in several hitchcock films. sadly stewart and bogart never appeared together on screen. thanks for the upload.
The character, Elwood P. Dowd, is most euphemistically referred to as a “tippler.” He’s an alcoholic who has decided to secede from the workaday world and pass the time in a kind, boozy haze with Harvey, hurting no one but also oblivious!
It's a nice life if you have an inheritance to live off of. Most of them live on the streets though.
I have never seen this movie. You guys surprised me with this one. It’s very rare for movie reactors to go this far back in time to watch and react to a movie. Lol. I love it. I have never seen Harvey. It’s a real good movie.
thanks so much for reacting to this classic, such an underrated film!
9:45: This is the nickname of my old family cat: "Pooka-Tail"
I've been looking forward to seeing your reaction to this movie since you announced you were doing it a week ago. Such a great movie and so few have done it. IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE came out 4 years earlier by the way in 1946, since you were wondering.
And you apprently don't don't remember but you've seen this movie referenced twice already in movies you've already seen. In SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION Andy describes Randall Stevens, the person he made in his bank fraud scheme as second cousin to Harvey the rabbit. And in FIELD OF DREAMS this movie was used as a plot device to show how messed up Ray was initially about hearing voices in his cornfield. In the scene his daughter is watching the movie on a TV set and he turns it off telling her to stop watching it, the man in the movie isn't funny he says. the man is sick. And everyone watching that movie back then understood the reference because everyoje back then knew the movie. It is that beloved.
But now to comp[lete the trifecta you need to see the other great movie from 20 years ago that references HARVEY. You may not have heard of it but you should have because it is in the same class as those other two, It is Ron Howard's A BEAUTIFUL MIND. Take a look. You'll love it.
It`s also referenced in the 1988 film (Who Framed Roger Rabbit), by a patron in the Diner. When the Judge say`s he is looking for a Rabbit, the patron fakes introducing him to Harvey.
I love this! Much better on stage!!
You know, Josephine Hull (Vita) got the oscar to best supporting actress for this!!! ❤
One of my moms favorite movies...R.I.P Mom...Thanks for reacting....Also James Stewart was moms favorite actor.
This is a great movie. I had a small TV (9 inch) and it was picking up this movie 200 miles away through the air (that rarely happens) so I watched a bit of it, and later in life, I found this on VHS and watched it, and loved it. I watch lots of old movies,
So happy to see a reaction to this classic!
Jimmy Stewart attended Princeton University to become an architect . After acting in some college plays he switched his major to drama . His father who owned a hardware store in Pennsylvania put Jimmy's college diploma in the stores front window.
29:45 Mark! Thumb Up #574! 👍 You're welcome, and thanks! ☺️
Notes: You two make me miss my college life, because I had a roommate whose fiancée was from the Philippines! 😊
This movie is one of my all-time favorites! When I was a boy, James Stewart's television series was still on. It was in color too! We got to see Harvey too! I saw that before I finally got to see the movie. 🐰
I remember being in a forum and one of the members used "Pooka" as his screen name in honor of "Harvey". His avatar was the color version from the series.
James Stewart would be a guest on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" but he was called "Jimmy". He would debut his poetry on Johnny's show. As well as his paintings.
Stewart and Carson both served in the military. Carson was the lower ranking one as a lieutenant in the Navy, while Stewart was a military pilot in the Army. Carson's sidekick, Ed, outranked them both though, as a brigadier general in the Army! 🫡
You guys are great for having such a unique movie to react to~ I remember seeing this wacky film in college-- the aunt played by Josephine Hull is hilarious, I still remember the way she talks
Have you ever seen Arsenic & Old Lace? Josephine Hull is absolutely hilarious in that movie!
@@HeartlandHunny I have not, but I've heard about it on Golden Girls
There's a reference to "Harvey" in the movie "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?"
Great movie and I appreciate how your reaction and treatment of this classic!
In the film "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," there is a reference to "Harvey" when the villain interrogates the patrons at the pub.
Great movie
A classic film and now you will understand the line about creating a person from nothing in The Shawshank Redemption.
This always reminds me of Mirical on 32 or 34th Street... and the other way around too. lolol This is an oldie but goodie. There are a few of them that are timeless. Alfred Hitchcock had a few good ones back in the day. The original Dr WHO series started back in the 50s. Bunch of good stuff back then. Twilight Zone, They made a Twilight Zone movie but no clue when it came out. 80's 90's really don't care to google it either. It creeped me out as a kid.
a lovely film from a golden age. I wish films like this could be made today but alas, we have all lost our innocence now.
A pooka is an Irish fairy. Not all of them are as friendly as Harvey. One appears in Darby O'Gill and the Little People, which I think you would enjoy.
I’ve known about this for 40 years but never seen it.
A pooka is a mythological spirit of British Isles. Mostly not very well known.
Sanity is only a matter of perspective one person madness is another person's reality before you call someone insane take a close look at what you believe and consider how many people would think that you are insane.
I'd rather live in a world with more Elwood P. Dowd!
The play won the Pulitzer Prize five years earlier. Everytime I eat a scrambled egg and onion sandwich, I think of this movie.
And if you don't t start seeing the rabbit one hour in, you're too whimsy-impaired for content like this. 😂 🐇 🐰
Harvey is a Pooka.
In the 90s there wasa all-girl duo called Pooka and they had a really nice song "City Slick"
the sister was also in Arsenic and Old Lace, even better
Love this film. All the roles are really well written and played. I especially like Elwood's calmness and kindness toe veryone.
You might consider doing a reaction to "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn"; another really good movie.
What a WONDERFUL film! I think anyone would love this movie. THANKS for reviewing this movie!
James Stewart has always been one of my favorite actors, especially his Westerns. As a boy, I loved this movie when I saw it on TV. In my freshman year at university, Steward and Helen Hayes brought the stage play of Harvey to our university. Since I was still ‘new’, I didn’t learn about this until it was too late to get tickets. One of my biggest regrets in life was not seeing Harvey on the stage with James Stewart as Elwood P. Dowd. (Later, I was able to see Vincent Price and Roddy McDowall in a play together).
Other old black and white movies you might like are A Face in The Crowd, and Gaslight.
Another great movie is "Holiday" (1938) with Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant. It is definitely worth the watch.
Harvey made an impression on me when I saw it as a teenager. After watching it, I decided to try to be the nicest person I possibly could. It worked. My mom, who was psychologist, was concerned that I was unnaturally nice. Well, I should say it worked for awhile, until I got to college where my roommate taught me to be cynical. Guess I got the formula 977 injection.
I thought this was forgotten. My High School play was this in the sixties. Was also on tv remake in 1972. Surprised to find 3 reactions to it. I would rather not watch Stewart, he repels me, but I'll go with y'all for a minute or two.
It always amuses me when the bar patron in who framed roger rabbit introduces his friend Harvey to the judge... and you just know none of the reviewers understand the joke.
Another great film from this era is _Marty,_ which won the Best Picture.
I knew Marion would believe. 🙏🏼
I saw this probably 30 something years ago when I was a teenager and instantly loved it. I believe in Harvey more now. 😇
oh yesss. there is many things i cannot explain or even proof ''Physically''
but i do know 100% without doubt.. that there is more than this material world!
this movie was but a breeze of how we are affected as people. i bet it was inspired by someone's true events
@@MJoy4Fun for sure. There's a movie that came out in theaters this year called AFTER DEATH. It's about near death experiences. You should check it out. It's more like a documentary style so it probably wouldn't be a reaction type movie.
Happy Thanksgiving 🦃
Based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Stewart and the rest of the cast couldn’t be any better!
If you need any, proof that Harvey was real is in the painting. How could the Artist give an accurate portrayal unless he too could see him. Elwood would certainly not pay good money for it unless it was accurate, now would he !! Glad you both enjoyed this classic, always great to see more people discover & enjoy it.
This was Jimmy Stewart's favorite role.
Awesome job guys!
"Veta" is in another great movie Arsenic And Old Lace.
Elwood's, invisible friend "Harvey", is a mythical Celtic entity, a shapeshifter, if you will. [for lack of a better word] right now, known as a "Puca".
The women Mary Chase who wrote the play . Won the puliter for this.
Cute reaction.
Interesting movie. I should go search for it. Keep it up 🙂
if you want another show in this vein. try Man of la Mancha or Being There.
any Jimmy Stewart movie is worth watching ❤❤❤❤
This is a real treat for the uninitiated to see this film. It’s not likely anyone who has seen it would have guessed what kind of movie they were in for. Not just the humor, but the innocence of Elwood.
I couldn't be happier! Thanks for watching this film!
I knew a Louis Cureau who was a firefighter.
Thank you for commenting such a good movie.
Christmas is coming : I recommend « The Shop around the Corner », a Christmas movie also starring James Stewart.
Greetings from France 🇫🇷

I'm so glad I found this channel quite a while ago. Love you guys, your reactions, your discussions (and sometimes passionate but civil debates!) - getting glimpses of your backgrounds and experiences from Romania and the Philippines, your chemistry, the way you let the movie mostly flow and save longer commentary until afterwards - I could go on, but this is already an awfully long run-on sentence. Seeing this film again after so many years have passed was bittersweet. Thanks for what you do.
More James Stewart movies! I miss them.
Hmm, a good opportunity to watch "Who framed Roger Rabbit". You'll know why.
Hello, you all may be the first reactor channel to view this most excellent movie about Pookas. Thank you very much.
Hello, MJoy4Fun, the actor that played " Elwood P. Dowd " was a special man. During World War II he took a sabbatical from acting and piloted heavy bombers in the European Theater of Operations. After the war he continued to serve in the Air Force Reserve until retirement. He was a Brigadier General. " Hey! "
Love this movie. 😊 Thank you for sharing it, M&J! You might enjoy another old classic called "Arsenic & Old Lace." It has the same gentle humor.
Please watch "arsenic and old lace", my favorite!!
Thank you for this. I grew up with this movie and James Stewart. I really do like you two, your reactions are always real and intertaining
You missed the end credits.😊
One of my all-time favorites! James Stewart is perfection and Josephine Hull as Veta Louise won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Stewart has said that her role was the more difficult one because at different times she had to both believe and not believe in Harvey. The movie is adapted from a Pulitzer Prize winning play.
