Your video came just in time. The contents have been around for a while but having a video step by step showed why it didn't work for me before. I made the mistake of adding the "init=/bin/sh" in a new line when it should come immediately after "rootwait". Thanks!
Got it wrong. Mine was: "dwc_otg.lpm_enable=0 console=serial0,115200 console=tty1 root=/dev/mmcblk0p7 rootfstype=ext4 elevator=deadline fsck.repair=yes rootwait splash plymouth.ignore-serial-consoles". What is that "ignore serial consoles"???
Thank you soooo much! Everywhere else I looked simply listed adding the init=/bin/sh and nothing else, didn't work for me and the remount they gave always came back with "couldn't find PIUU...). Following your layout worked for me.
You said "spot on", Please reveal the secret. at 2:00 he types "mount ????" I can't read it. Letter "o"? zero? So far I am stuck. If you know the answer, please reveal.
In case you are not able to mount the device, you can add rw as well to the textfile cmdfile. This will boot with read write access instead of only read only.
01:52 if pressing enter does not work, try to use another keyboard. Pressing enter did not work for me with the attached keyboard but after plugging in another one it worked.
when we pause to read what you are typing (the meat) the youtube slider bars and everything when we pause cover up what you are typing... Moving the box up a bit so that the key thing we need to see is not obscured by the youtube slider bar :)
Thank you so much for the video. It is a saver! By the way, I wanted to know that if we remove the SD card, will the python scripts and other image data deleted from the SD card or will it be intact
If it says stuff after rootwait already, do I have to delete it to get the command to work or is it fine to ignore it? It says "splash plymouth.ignore-serial-consoles quiet" after rootwait.
Great video! i had to connect a micro usb to usb a adapter and a keyboard to my pi zero w to change the password but i got it done. Thank you for the great video
Works, after you put SD Card back if you can' t type try with normal keyboard plugging in to USB port 1. I tried with Bluetooth keyboard could not type after changing to normal cable keyboard i could type.
Thank you for this video. But I would like to know how can I reset the password in the eMMC? Since there is no SD card in my CM4, how can I reset the password?
I'm using the Raspberry Pi with a monitor and keyboard attached. I haven't tried anything remotely. If you have a second microSD card and a card reader, you could install a fresh system on the second microSD card (DO NOT MIX IT UP WITH YOUR PRIMARY CARD). With that system booted, insert your original microSD card in a card reader and connect it to the Pi. You should be able to access your files on the card.
I'm not able to edit the cmdline.txt on mac due to that file being read-only, I also cannot change file permission from mac since it is FAT32. I'm stuck here. Anybody else having this issue ?
Not gonna work for me. Here's what I see when I put back the sd card with the changed. txt file: bash: cannot set terminal process group (-1): Inappropriate ioctl for device bash: no job control in this shell
did not work for me at the shell prompt remounting the filesystem would not work - some error about already in use. But turns out you can just boot normally and in the gui menu preferences/ raspberry pi configuration program there is a button that allows you to change password and it worked.
Having trouble at 1:49 did everything you did (even edited the file on a mac.) But the pi now will not use my keyboard. It says it connected but none of the keys work. I'm using a regular apple desktop keyboard. Only one I have laying around. And it's a 4gb pi 4
Do you have any other devices plugged into USB (even a mouse)? If so, try unplugging them and restarting (so only the keyboard is plugged in). Let me know if that works.
@@Rickmakes never mind man. I just reinstalled raspbian, it was a fresh install to begin with only thing I lost was a xfce desktop. Everything works fine now
How do you boot the raspberrypi? I'm using windows 10 and when I typed the mount command it showed this error: " 'mount' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. "
Hi, I have "Kali Linux" on my Raspberry pi 4. But I forgot the root password of it. Please help me on how to reset my root password. Thanks in advance.
How do you do all this without having a screen on the raspberry? Anyone know, because to be able to interact with Pi over the PC i need the SSH wich asks for the password that im trying to remember :D
So I'm new at this. How did you even connect to your Pi after editing cmdline.txt? You just pop up your Pi with no explanation. I cannot SSH to the pi when the cmdline.txt is edited. Is there another way to connect? What am I missing here?
I had a monitor and keyboard hooked directly up to it. I don't think there is a way to do this remotely (via ssh or other). Does that answer your question?
Yeah, all great and everything but can'tuu SSH in to run these commands. All I did was put the Raspberry Pi OS on and try to SSH in via Putty and said access denied despite using default username and password... infuriating. Ready to put it in the bin.
You said "easy to follow", Please reveal the secret. at 2:00 he types "mount ????" I can't read it. Letter "o"? zero? So far I am stuck. If you know the answer, please reveal.
That mounts the system so you can write to it. If you have trouble reading it off the video you can also find it in my video notes: www.rickmakes.com/raspberry-pi-reset-forgotten-password/
For the record, this worked 23/04/23. Thanks for sharing dude!

In case you are not able to mount the device, you can add rw as well to the textfile cmdfile. This will boot with read write access instead of only read only.
What does this mean where do you add the letters "rw" ? Where specifically what file and line?
This worked for me! Thanks so much man. I thought I would have to reformat which would undo all the work I already did
I've re formatted and it's not the default password
It worked and you saved my bacon. I was having issues with written guides, thanks!
01:52 if pressing enter does not work, try to use another keyboard. Pressing enter did not work for me with the attached keyboard but after plugging in another one it worked.
Thanks! It really works and I was able to get back into my Raspberry Pi doing just as you said in your video.

Thank you very much sir, after five hours of research on the web.. you saved me hours of updates and configs. thank you once again :)
Great tutorial. Just wondering if this will work on Orange Pi too? Thanks
I don't have experience with the Orange Pi but if it is running Raspberry Pi OS, I would guess it would work the same.
Works with octoprint on a pi 2 confirmed. Also, great tutorial!!
Thank you so much for the video. It is a saver! By the way, I wanted to know that if we remove the SD card, will the python scripts and other image data deleted from the SD card or will it be intact
Worked like a charm. I transcript of the steps would be great.
this worked perfect and I did not have to write the sd card again, thank you I didnt loose my OMV.
After making the changes in cmd.txt my keyboard and mouse stopped working...I cannot get the prompt to type anything...what to do now?
Man u saved my life, worked for retropie 😄🙏👍
Thank you! Super helpful!
Didn't work. My RP just froze and I can't type anything after reattaching the SD card.
I am having the same issue
If it says stuff after rootwait already, do I have to delete it to get the command to work or is it fine to ignore it?
It says "splash plymouth.ignore-serial-consoles quiet" after rootwait.
Works as explained. Thanks!
You're welcome!
Great video! i had to connect a micro usb to usb a adapter and a keyboard to my pi zero w to change the password but i got it done. Thank you for the great video
In the command "passwd pi', 'pi' is the username so be sure to replace this with your own.
Good point!

Thank you mate. Works like a charm.
thank you so much this saved my butt with a new 3d printer

great video!!! a
awesome how you explained everything in detail
Thank you for your tutorial, it worked 👍
It says: cannot open Splash: no such file or directory please help
thx so much , it was helpful
Are you using a micro HDMI to connect to raspberry ?
Is it possible to do anything if you connect remotely? My whole thesis is trapped in there !!

at 2:00, mount ??? is it letter "O" or number 0??? I can't see what you're typing. Uggh!!
Now it simply won't boot and crashes with a big white pi is logo. Any have any ideas ? Please
Hello sir i have a question. If i follow this steps will the information or the data in the raspberry pi will be gone?
This just resets the password, not the data.

Question, what do you do if you can not edit the cmdline.txt file because it is locked?
not working on a windows computer, the cmdline.txt file on the sdcard is write protected somehow
It doesn't work for octopi? I tried it but cannot do "mount -o remount,rw" . It can't find partuuid?
Is it Will change the files that was save in raspy or not ? I mean it Will be back like new ?
This will only change the password. The rest of the files will stay intact.
Is there any other way of doing this I don't own a computer right now
Having trouble at 1:49 did everything you did (even edited the file on a mac.) But the pi now will not use my keyboard. It says it connected but none of the keys work. I'm using a regular apple desktop keyboard. Only one I have laying around. And it's a 4gb pi 4

is there supposed to be quotes on pi becuase3 it only works if i type passwd and no pi
It shouldn't need quotes. Do you have a different primary user account you use? If so, use that instead of pi.
