According to one online source, Stevie Wonder had already recorded over 15 albums by 1973... which is when this album was released. At 23 years of age he recorded an absolute masterpiece of music. This was recorded during the time when albums were to be listened to from beginning to end. It's truly a great music experience!

For myself, that's highly debatable, because Stevie hasn't had nearly as many hit singles as others but his craft and skill were seldom matched! If you just wanted a "Stevie Wonder" record, you were never disappointed! He was an inspiration for Prince, Michael Jackson and others and that's an awesome legacy!

Two cuss words got played on the radio. "That f***ing crud is sh**y". And you talked over where the kid is getting thrown in the cell and the guard says "Get in that cell n**ger". The seriousness of the song really comes through with that. There was a later edited version for radio, but the full song got played a lot.

Stevie is a world WONDER . It doesn’t matter how often or how years one has listened to this song -you always hear something new each time. Some of the astounding lyrics that came out of his amazing mind I had to learn a while ago not to analyze too much - but to just listen to/absorb them- because you’ll never fully know (unless Stevie himself confirms) what was behind them or whether to take them literally or figuratively. I love letting HIS lyrics paint my own mental pictures.

Well, you are right to speak in such high regard for Stevie, and all who do this listen to so much music, it’s got to be more difficult for you of younger generations to get a good grasp on the chronology of it, than for thus of us who experienced the musician real time, as when it originally came out. That said, with Stevie, as well as with MJ, the Beatles, or Earth Wind & Fire, you do NOT want to confuse timeline. The distinction among those artists is that MJ’s solo career had just taken off about 1980, while the others work from ‘80’s on, not necessarily as distinct as what they produced in the ‘70’s. It’s understandable to consume their releases of ‘80’s era.
That said, the order of his work from the ‘70’s is important. Where I’m Coming From, may be the 1st album of exclusively Stevie originals, co-written with his wife at the time, Syreeta Wright, whose voice can be heard on, If Years u Really Love Me. Prior to that, Stevie had original hits with, My Cherie Amour; Yesteryou, Yesterme, Yesterday; & Signed Sealed Delivered. He had already recorded like 13 or more albums before. There is a Greatest Hits Volume 2 which would be worth checking.
But from 1972, is ALL Stevie original work. He never looked back! Music of My Mind (Superwoman/Where Were You); Talking Book (Superstition); Innervisions (Living For the Coty, Golden Lady, All in Love is Fair); Fulfilingnes’ First Finale (You Haven’t Done Nothin, Bookie On Reggae Woman, Creepin) ; THEN comes the epic, Songs in the Key of Life, a double album with a bonus 45 (single on each side) which also came with a booklet containing lyrics & credits to all songs. This included, I Wish, Knocks Me Off My Feet, As, Another Star, And She’s Gone, Sir Duke, I Am Singing. After that mother-load comes, ‘Hotter Than July (Master Blaster, All O Do, Happy Birthd

It's a very unpopular position but I'm not a big Stevie fan. This is one of the 3 I don't change when it comes on.

JJ, as a young teen in a major city, this is how I learned about real struggles and people being framed. Stevie is the GOAT's GOAT!!

yes. he is definitely a musical genius.
and if you thought THAT song was incredible, you should listen to his "Secret Life Of Plants" -- and i mean the ENTIRE ALBUM. it's literally about just that -- with the theme of plants laced throughout each & every song -- from the affect trees have on the environment & the oxygen we breathe, to the beauty & fragility of a single flower & the life its nectar provides to bees..... the musicianship & arrangements of that album are (guaranteed) like NOTHING you've ever heard before or will ever hear again. and from what i've gotten to know & see of you from these videos, a body of work like "Secret Life Of Plants" will forever change (for the better) how YOU (personally) hear & critique music and REAL talent/artistry. ~ b.

Spike Lee's movie, JUNGLE FEVER, I think. The crackhouse scene.

You have to listen to the song very carefully. This kind of story happens to young black naive brothers coming from the South back in the day all the time. He's telling the story of the humble upbringing of a brother in the South. And as soon as he gets to New York he gets tricked unwittingly into holding a package of drug's ( the part you talked over ). And ends up spending 10 years in prison. It's a deep song.
