#ww2 #tank
That one scene in Girls und Panzer where they drop a Type 10 MBT onto a parking lot of the school and then the tank proceeds to crush a car was 10/10.
*the car was the principal's btw*
Momo chan was like "damn that was the principle's car"
And I think it was a Ferrari. An old farreri, momo chan gotta pay the price of an actual tank for that one
Nah
To be blunt, the car's destruction is cathartic for me, since such misuse of schoolship funds nearly ensured of its shutdown.
Before M22 Locust, the British Airborne Division used Tetrarch Light Tanks carried in by gliders. They were slightly more successful than M22 in their combat history: during Operation Tonga in Normandy, the surprise appearance of some Tetrarch tanks convinced a German unit that the isolated British paratroopers had linked up with the beachhead, and called off a planned counterattack.
I was gonna mention the fact that the tetrarch was used as a airborne tank by the British, but you beat me to it
The Company of Heroes video game has that in mind.
I remember reading about it in Britain at War magazine
Those were also sent to Soviets, but they used them conventionally. Maybe that glider could have worked better with Tetrarch?
@@GrimFaceHunter the M22's never saw Soviet usage and I believe the Soviets saw the little British tank a bit too lightly armed for their preference probably utilized in others roles and possibly escort purposes.
The A Team scene will always be special to me.
You got that right!
TV show's still the better work, though.
You can’t fly a tank!
@@cm275 THAT'S 'CAUSE WE'RE FALLING FOOL!
I know I'm critiquing something that's intentionally ridiculous, but firing the gun below the canopy would create a low pressure zone that would collapse the chute onto the tank.
consistent upload schedule paired with you’re tenacity for details really shows
Thanks Antonio! I'm at it whenever family allows.
@@JohnnyJohnsonEsq hear me out m50 oto dropped by usmc with flichet rounds sounds awesome still i know the jungle was screaming when it saw the m50
the antonov a-40 has got to be my favorite airborne tank seeing as how it's literally just a T-60 with a glider grafted onto it
Soviet problems require soviet solutions.
And also no ammo and I think no fuel either??
Wow I had no clue that the Sheridan could fire a guided missile from it's main gun. That's awesome.
A shame it barely worked and 90% of the missiles were never fired
I believe The Chieftain has a video on his channel where he goes around a Sheridan and talks with a tanker that used it and they go over the many issues the design had.
All T series tanks can do that. Gives a big range boost
Building the Sheridan around the gun-missile system was a major source of the issues it had. It probably would have been better off with a low velocity 76mm or 90mm gun like the British Scorpion.
And from my understanding, firing a regular round from the gun threw the sights far enough off that the missiles were no longer accurate.
Air dropping tanks in fiction will always be satisfying, be it like this with parchutes and pallets or like in Star Wars Episode 2 in the movies major battle scene where special gunships drop the tanks off right in the middle of the action ready to fight.
And Girls und Panzer did the paradrop tanks incredibly well in Der Film when Ooarai got all their tanks back dropped off by Saunders' own cargo aircraft. But they also did towards the beginning of the first season with the Type-10 being dropped the same way, just with the crew inside because this is Girls und Panzer and screw that weak logic when we get to see the principal's car being run over.
You just killed me with that Star Wars scene! That would have been awesome for this video!
@Johnny Johnson Yeah, guess you missed that drop scene for the video. But the video stuck the landing and was great. So I'm glad to have dropped by to watch it.
AT-TE drop scenes will always have a place in my heart
If only that were doable in any of the Battlefront games, especially the original versions.
Also, just remembering, Halo does it too thanks to Pelicans dropping off Scorpion Tanks, sometimes even straight into combat. So there's another example of airdropping tanks.
I'm suprised for Johnny to not include Tetrach Tank, the predecessor of M22 Locust...kinda. I always liked the "airdropping tank" tactics when playing Company Of Heroes, dropping Tetrach and commandos on flank and capping, good times!
I'm kinda bummed I didn't find that game play. I looked hard for some tetrarch footage. 🥸
@@JohnnyJohnsonEsq there is a video by Valefisk that has some Tetrarch footage but the video itself raises some eyebrows
Can also recommend Star Marshal's playthrough of the British campaign.

@@JohnnyJohnsonEsq I feel sure you will find a way...😅😅
I'm so glad this channel is growing. Its clean, concise, and correct content. Its great
Surprised you didn’t include the scene from World in Conflict Soviet Assault’s trailer
The scene where a T-72 tank is dropped from a Soviet cargo plane from high altitude, before it soon lands in a car dealership to support Soviet airborne troops
DANG! That would have been gravy.
And the fight for burger king
Better drop food trucks next time to battlefield to feed the hungry soldiers 😂
Man, how I love its story campaign. Never forget Cascade Falls, people.
Don't forget abrams being dropped in COD ghost
Once people told me that tanks with parachutes dont exist when i drew them on a drawing. They were Wrong!
C3-PO:"They fly now!"
Finn:"They fly now?"

Tanks for dropping by Johnny.
The germans have a new "light tank" or tankette system the Weasel. its acutally able to be carried inside helicopters and deployed on hilltops, fields, parking structures.
I was looking at that! It's pretty cool actually. Maybe give it it's own video down the road.
@@JohnnyJohnsonEsq Their true "terror" is their versatility and configurations... working in 4 vehicle sets. 1x 20mm cannon, 2x SAM launchers, 1x Radar and command. carried by 2 helo's you have a portable air defense shield.
3x 120mm mortar + 1 command.
3x tow 1 x25mm
2x 20mm 2x APC
any of those can be carried by 2 helo's and dropped anywhere.
I served 5 years in a unit equipped with Weasels. They look a lot better on paper than in reality. They offer only protection against shrapnel and they suck off-road. The 20mm cannon has hand crank controls and the TOW Weasel only recently received a machinegun mount. Before that you only had your personal weapons for defense against enemy infantry. They're a compromise.
@@franktower9006 Hey, the Canadian Cougar generally had a hand cranked turret, officially it was an electric, but the electrics failed if the system got wet.. and the system ALWAYS got wet.
That aside... they are a force multiplayer, and ambush weapon. They are not made for "front line" combat, they are made to be "placed" in key points, as artillery, AA, or anti-tank. Then either engaging the enemy and falling back to a new fire position, or holding the position until threatened.
Really its defense and offensive abilities aren't base on its armor, but on its placement, and mobility. Commanders who know that and use them properly can harass and lock down enemy air assets, ground assets, and support friendly units...
Commanders that don't know that will end up needlessly sacrificing lives .

Cranking that turret around ain't easy.
I have a D-Day book with in it the locust. Cool Thingy.
No JohnnyJohnson video without at least one girls und panzer clip.
He is truly a man of culture
1:49 As a proud Irish man it fills me with pride knowing the Americans calling their tank weapon a Shillelagh, anyone who doesn't know it's a very old fighting stick made from blackthorn and cut from a Faerie tree on a particular day to not bring harm to the maker but if you're struck by it you will be cursed. Whoever named it must have Irish heritage and knowledge of our lore.

‘Ren and Stimpy’ had the characters in a parachute tank unit as a dark joke at the end of the cartoon in which they joined the army.
Fascinating and entertaining as always Johnny. Just a slight adjustment to the final pun: "Tanks for dropping in !".
The entirety of Girls und Panzer der Film is incredibly stupid fun.
One of the most entertaining animated films ever.
fuck yeah polka goes brrr
As a former "leg" infantryman, I don't see men and equipment dropping from the sky, I see easy targets.
Bro seriously?
Tanks for dropping in.
Light Tank Mk VII Tetrarch says "Oi !! Over here mate!"
I think the Tetrarch saw combat before the M22, twenty Tetrarchs were deployed during Operation Tonga (Normandy 1944 British 6th Airborne Operation) and had been intended for use in Sicily 1943 but were left out due to lack of gliders.
Due to lack of number and poor performance the Tetrarchs were replaced by the M22 later in the War.
I searched high and low for Tetrarch footage but came up with zero. I was sadly a lil time crunched on this one. But I should have given it a mention either way. 🙏🇬🇧
@@JohnnyJohnsonEsq Sweet video though and really given the low numbers of Tetrarchs at that time its is not surprising you could not find footage. I am also assuming the entry in the Wiki is correct 🤔
All is forgiven 🦁🤝🦅
Star Marshal's Company of Heroes playthrough might be of some help.
What’s more surprising about the Soviet WW2 glider tank is that when it was tested it got cut loose with the crew and they just drove it back to the airfield
Several years ago I found the scant remains of a M38A1 Army Jeep that had been para-dropped in the Mojave Desert, CA, during the Desert Strike war games of 1964. The Jeep landed hard on a rock outcrop that exploded the transmission. Lots of loose gears and other broken parts. Surface evidence showed that the pallet holding the Jeep was later dragged off the hill and removed. Months later I found the Colonel whose Jeep that was. It was a regimental radio Jeep so he was out of luck for awhile.
I think it would be really interesting to see a video of the use of the FT-17 in films
A friend of mine owned an M22. I haven't seen him in years, so it might not be in his private collection anymore, but it was not among the listed known surviving M22 locusts. He liked to take mudding behind his grass runway.
I had no idea they dropped tanks out of planes. Cool and interesting idea to get tanks from one place to another on the battlefield. Love that you started this video with the scene from the A-Team movie. That's one of my favorite scenes from that movie. Also, love that dropping in pun.
That parting joke didn't tank with the viewers. Always great to see another of your videos. I think I've watched from the beginning of your channel. Did you ever do one on the duster. I've known a few tank crew who rode in them in Vietnam. They were light tanks that everyone seemed to have a love/hate relationship with. They could move but they would get stuck in the mud.
Hey thanks so much! Really appreciate it. I haven't yet but I think it would be a fun project. I'll add it to my list.
I knew a guy who rode them in Vietnam, said his platoon NDPed in a graveyard one night and got hit by North Vietnamese, they leveled their guns and went, boom boom boom! Said when the Sun came up, there was nothing but blood and broken tombstones around them!
...I think I'm gonna do a Death in the Family crowbar thing for such puns.
Did those men in those para-tanks used a black or redberet ?!
Perhaps Sheridan tank have successful combat stats since it last being use during Operation "Just Cause", the invasion of Panama despite has flaw, still in a good hand, it was a really an effective airborne armored support. It does hold it own in early stage of the invasion.
Thanks for *flying* by with this new content of yours JJ, you've really been on *track* with all this new content of yours, hopefully you'll *land* some more content about paratrooper some time in the future.

*YOU CAN’T FLY A TANK FOOL!*
Girls und Panzer: yes we can
The Porsche Tiger has a special button for that.😉
That bad pun crash landed roughly, better glide over it
Tanks for the video. You dropped an excellent subject on target with excellent altitude for detail.
Love the thumbnail lol, I can imagine TF2 Demoman and Spy saying the dialogue.
Darn, was expecting some Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn/Renegade Nod Airstrip footage.
By the way, the Oarai principal's luxury car deserved its unjust fate. Sure explains why the schoolship nearly got shuttered, such excess.
Edit: If anyone asks why the Saunders cargo plane didn't struggle carrying otherwise heavy tanks, it's because they actually flew with a lower fuel capacity and were assisted by offscreen tanker planes, according to der Film side material.
Yeah. I had a buddy who was in the 173rd Airborne Brigade. He said that the only time they had one M-551 - was when they dropped two and the one that could move - towed the one that had a working gun. This was post-Vietnam in The States.
.
The 2 best that I can think of would be something like Hawkeye for indirect fire support, and a light tank that is armored to stop autocannon only from the front and rifles from the sides. Have the Hawkeye low recoil howitzer as the tanks main for structures with an autocannon coaxial. It would rely on an APS to deal with HEAT instead of reactive or ceramic armor to keep weight down. Lastly a crew of 2, driver with gunner (like a technical crew but in a tank with modern tech like thermals and tac nav for both), following dismounted infantry to reduce size and weight if a 3 man crew makes it too large and heavy.
Good of you to drop this on us.
Better pun? Tanks for dropping in. (Thanks for dropping in) 😂
Always happy to see a Thunderbirds reference in a vid
I'm pretty sure the Soviets also used the ASU 57, a small 57mm spg however I dont think they used it at all.
Yeah
But it was mainly used in an infantry support instead of an spg role
@@BigboyCaleb78 Makes sense in that context yeah.
Tank you for this video on _Flying_ Thunder. I think it was right on track.
The A team shows how to fall with style. Maybe that's the pun. Thanks for falling in with style. Also, maybe dova the m1 adram video
The M22 Locust, looking like something straight out of Thunderbirds only smaller.
If I recall correctly, the two LAPES incidents were the result of the drogue chutes deploying before the pallets were unlocked. The sudden increased drag caused the aircraft to stall before anything could be done.
I believe the British 21st Army Group used a limited number of M22 Locust during their Rhine River crossing operations in 1944. Although I’m not sure they were used in a direct airborne role, just as another armored light reconnaissance vehicle.
Operation Varsity. Includes early tests on using tanks as lawn ornaments

I always remember annoyIng people in Company of Heroes by dropping a Tetrarch tank behind their lines in a tank glider.
i just watched a video where someone cheeses with airborne british, it's great
The low altitude drop came about through the Battle of Khe Sanh because it became to dangerous to land transport aircraft there. As someone pointed out millions of dollars worth of aircraft could be destroyed by a mortar round which cost the same as a pair of army boots.
I did read about a training exercise with an M22 light tank whose landing did not quite go to plan. The tanks crew were sat in the tank as it came into land when there was a sudden jolt and everything went quiet. They sat there waiting for the door to be opened but nothing happened. It turned out that they had not quite landed on the ground but they had, in fact, landed in a tree.
The big problem for the M551 was its mixed ammunition. Everytime they fired a shell it messed up the gun so that it could not fire the missile. and as the missile was needed to knock out tanks it made life difficult for the crew.
I love these vids man!
Tanks for dropping in??
The tank hung in the sky in much the same way that bricks don't.
Tanks for the videos
How did you not go with "Tanks for watching?" It was right there.
I love your short, informative videos, underlined by cool footage! My new favorite military channel for sure :D
Sometimes, the parachute puns hit you from out of the blue.
I see Girls Und Panzer (especially when used as an example of doing something well), and I give a like. :)
Nice to see the old thinderbirds show again, alsoi have to say
" Are they trying to shoot down the other drone?"
"No, they're trying to fly a tank..."
Tanks for dropping a great vid 🤣🇨🇦

Do a video on the gliders in ww2
The first Airborne tanks were the Soviet T-37A and T-38.Grokhovsky experiments in the mid-30s of the last century. The discharge from the TB-3 to the water along with the crew (quite successfully tested), delivery on the external suspension and landing with the landing method to the captured bridgehead.
A team part was so funny
And another thing, didn't the type 10 from GUP fly out of a tank
It did! I have no excuse for not using that scene.
hey theire jhonny, thanks for the "quick-drop" of info
Good man!
Came back to this video after the tactical shooter Squad added the Russian VDV as a faction, and getting to see their light armoured vehicles. BTRDs, Spruts, etc
Never thought I’d hear Bach in a tank video 😀
I see Girls Und Panzer and I click, no questions asked! 😂
The Sheridan was a nice ABN tank , 82nd ABN in the 90's we could ride on top to breach site.
SAPPERS FOWARD,, retired them around 96 by Clintin
Not gonna lie that rocket system looked cool af, but seems so incredibly dangerous and prone to failure.
The tank mission from Call of Duty Ghosts had that scene. Though, however impossible it was to airdrop Abrams straight into combat from out the back of a C5 Galaxy. Still a cool mission opening though.
I loved dropping in with an IFV in the BF3 endgame dlc, it felt sooo good
BF3 was great game. I did my longest killstreak (21) with airdroped BMP-2 on nebandan flats.
Adding Thunderbirds was a pleasant surprise. Makes me feel old though 😂
Just makes me think of aliens and how the dropship lowers the ramp for the apc
Hang on we're in for some chop
@@JohnnyJohnsonEsq yup
*Tanks* for droppin' in.
Hank Scorpio you never disappoint.
In the old RTS game Empires: Dawn of the Modern World, US C-47s would drop parachuted crates containing either a sherman or a howitzer, I guess it wasn't total fantasy after all.
nice video! kinda sad u didn't show a clip of Ami Chōno landing her Type 10 MBT while being airdropped from a C-2 tho... oh well
The german Me 321 is another glider option. It could carry up to 20tons so a Panzer II or 38t was doable. And since it had the loading gauge of a german railcar those would fit.
“Tanks” for dropping in?
Aircraft dropped vehicles tend to go up to around 20 tons, some more or less, depending on the size, 20 tons is on the heavier end for wheeled vehicles, the west has moved away from dedicated airborne tanks and has moved towards existing armoured wheeled vehicles, the problem with airborne armoured vehicles is that they only provide protection from small arms fire and take up a lot of space in the aircraft
I'm expecting the future will see a lot more airdropping or remote controlled, lightly armored drones. Inserting a squadron of light assault vehicles behind enemy flanks is a great way to create cheap chaos, especially if the vehicles are disposable (wich has always been the issues with airdropping MBTs)
As a world in conflict player
I see T80s, M1 abrams and leopards parachuting off the transport planes
And it looks cool af
Just saying that its not long before the tank concept meet the same end as Battles ships and Dreadnaughts. With anti-tank technology and advancement of drones, Tanks will cost too much while becoming obsolete. Take a look at the war in Ukraine and notice the amount in tanks taken out of combat within a small time frame.
The way I see it, the tank as a concept might be gone, but most likely the heavily armored MBT will become obsolete. It is possible that we might see a comeback to the early Cold War Era tank design philosophy of making "Agile Glass Cannon" tanks like the Leopard 1 and the AMX-30. They were devised at a time when HEAT rounds that could very easily pierce virtually any contemporary homogeneous steel armor at that time became such a common threat with no downside over other dedicated AT rounds that there was no point in armoring the tanks more than just a couple inches and trade away other advantages for such a marginal gain in effective protection. Armor became less effective, but not worth abandoning altogether. Of course that changed when composite vehicle armor became a thing and so bigger and heavier tanks returned once again. But with the uprising of top-attack man portable ATGMs, we may see a return to that smaller and more mobile tank design.
Though there are more soft and strategic factors to consider other than just price and penetrative power alone that aren't as obvious. And honestly, on the other hand, infantry body armor has simultaneously been making a comeback in recent years against intermediate and full sized rifle cartridges and this war in Ukraine has also simultaneously shown that aswell. It's weird, but true. Infantry armour has made some ridiculous advancements over the last two decades and is still evolving with recent material sciences developments and is for the first time in *centuries* catching up to firearms. Again, that's just for infantry for now, but who knows?
"Tanks for dropping in."
Tanks Johnny.👌
Fun fact about the ASU series of Soviet tanks in WW2, they were meant to be dropped in with the VDV (Russian Airborne), however after testing every model of ASU it was found that it was really not viable for the parachute technology of the time, so the airborne tanker program ironically enough was never airborne.
As far as I know only a few times the tanks were actually transported via air travel rather than train but still never para dropped.
It was however resurrected many years later when parachute technology got better and vehicles such as BTR's started getting dropped.
If war thunder has taught me anything the M22 locust is a fucking boss fight
WOW HOW COME I DID NOT KNOW THIS?!
I always wondered why the M22 locust is considered a failure, I thought as concept it was really good to give parachute troops some firepower they needed.
Nice usage of GuP footage btw, always love when someone didn't shy away from using it just because it's an "anime".
As Johnny mentioned, the M22 Locust was a failure because it was poorly armed, poorly armored and very unreliable, mechanically.
It came to late (like the Tetrach). By the time it entered service Hans, Franz, Hans Grandma and Fritz HiWi had Panzerfausts
Always happy to see GuP as a source for knowledge
Imagine the tank crew turning up late to the drop and the enemy has nicked it 😂
I like to think that the video on Krag was a break from the potential streak of tank videos you have so far uploaded.
My poor sweet Krag video...

A favourite air drop video is if you search Raining Humvees.
I Always play C&C Generals Rise of the Reds and would often use the Acolyte Tank and if I'm not mistaken that tank is Inspired by the M8 Armored Gun System in real life
Interesting concept
Dropping "technicals" makes more sense. They're faster (increasing survivability better than armour will), and being lighter means many more could be dropped. Newer armour systems (improved kevlar and ceramics) would make them tougher.
Anyone remember that one last COD Ghost mission where u drop Abraham tanks from the transport plane to the Federation radar site???
