- I’m a DIE HARD Durston fan! I’ve been pitching my Xmid tents for over 2,000 trail miles and have discovered a few tricks that might help you get that perfect “sage” pitch.

Thanks - very useful. I like especially the tip on how you square corners - cool!
Thank you 🌻
Great idea, showing the position of the 2nd stake. Thank you. I was at Hawk on March 11th this year and I also walked across the GGB from SF! After Hawk, I continued on and did Haypress and then Centennial. Hiked to Sausalito and returned to SF via the ferry.
A PVC pipe end cap helps push in the tent stakes without hurting your hand and weighs very little.
Very nice, thinking of getting one. Ah, Marin!
Just when I got tired of RUclips backpackers a breath of fresh air
Ohhhh I'm so excited to try the tip with the second stake. That might solve most of my disdain for this tent.
Great video, thanks
Awww thank you 🌻
Well done. New follower here. Durston makes some great tents. Crow
This was superhelpful, thanks! I've had a few wonky pitches with my x-mid 1p, and couldn't work out what was wrong. Pretty sure it was this!
Practice makes perfect. And even the “wonky” pitches will still keep you warm and dry. Ask me how I know 🫣
With the Pro, I've been doing the alt pitch... zip both sides. Stake out the non-zipper ends first decently tight. That seems to get the zippered corners at a good starting point. Maybe it's how the DCF doesn't stretch as much as the silpoly.
Are those holes in your floor? is this a well used tent?
No. That’s dirt from
The last trip. But yes it’s a well used tent, over 1k miles. The only hole I have is from a squirrel but that’s not what you’re seeing lol. I patched that up and that’s on the side walls of bathtub not on the bottom.
I just peg corner to opposite corner. Seems to work for me
this was my first thought, but there is a tiny bit more walking back and forth.
What is a “do-hikky-thing-a- bobber”? Whow does that slang help your “tutorial!?”
Ya gotta have a tight peak/ridge :o)
Fabulous video! That tip about the 2nd corner! 🙌🏻 I think my husband was trying to point that out to me last weekend, but i wasn't listening. 😂
You do a lot of good in the world. I love you, lady!
Awww. Shucks. Love you back beautiful ❤
Thank you for sharing this video!! I’ve just pitched my x-mid correctly for the first time and have the legit perfect bathtub floor thanks to you 🙌🏼😘🙌🏼😘 I pitched it wonky my first three times and came to RUclips for a non-Dan D. video and yours has the exact details I needed.
I’m still on the fence about this tent, mainly because of how tricky it is to pitch properly. I’m curious about why in your pitch the top ridge is bowing? Something seems to be pulling it down. I’ve seen other videos showing this ridge as a straight line. Is it because the poles are a bit high? But your floor seems to be perfect with the corners all square. Good tip on pulling the guy lines at a 45-deg angle in order to get the corners squared.
I found the answer. Dan Durston explains it in his setup video at 8:30. Solution is to bring in the opposite corners that are pulling the ridge line down. Not that your pitch wasn’t good enough already-it looked almost perfect from inside-only that this tent seems to require a lot of effort to pitch according to Durston’s intended geometry 😅
Convinced! I received my new Durston xmid2 pro last week! I let Dan know that it was this video that convinced me to take the plunge. Not only did you make it look super easy, when I got it and pitched it for the first time, thanks to this video, my pitch was almost perfect!
Awww that is so awesome to hear! Yay!
Good tips. I'll be focusing on your staking ideas next trip.
great explanation, thanks
Trekking poles go pointed end up, grips down.
Not for pro models. Why do you try to correct someone when you did not do you homework?
@@hologos_ Thank you for pointing out my mistake. Please accept my apologies.
Not all trekking pole tents are designed the same.
I think the issue here is that it was never specified whether this was the pro version or not.
X-mid 1: grip down, points up
Pro: grip up, points down
