I don't understand this whole resurgence of people insisting "decimate" *has* to be by 1/10th. Like yes that's the original Latin meaning, but like people always note, everyone uses it to mean completely destroyed...and when virtually everyone who speaks a language uses a word with a certain meaning... @@chrisc1140 Right, it has a modern common-parlance usage, and that's okay. I think it's important and interesting to know what it originally meant and, in this light, to try to find a different word to use when you mean "destroy." But people shouldn't mock others for using it to mean "destroy."
I would assume that Red Dawn is called Red Dawn because the red army was coming at you, towards the viewer. As in, the red army is coming over the horizon at you, like the sun does at dawn. The word 'Decimate' comes from when Roman Legions needed to be punished. The Legion's smallest unit was a 'Contubernium' which had ten men, led by a Decanus. A form of blanket punishment was 'Decimation', where the Conturbenium would each draw lots, and the Legionary who drew the short straw would be beaten to death by the other 9 men in the Contubernium - reducing it by 10%.

As someone who lives in China, Taiwan is referred to as a province. If you ever ask a mainlander about Taiwan, they'll usually say it's a province of China.
On all the Game of Thrones and audience backlash stuff - I think the core problem is that writers, directors and artists deviate way too much from source material, or else, just make terrible decisions. Game of Thrones was offered full 10-Ep seasons but turned it down for "reasons" and ended up with character development that feels rushed and forced. As a writer myself, the ideal word count is infinite, giving you endless time to build up the intricacies needed to create believable character arcs, which GoT skipped. Each episode hit major plot points but in a brief jump while skipping all the major detail that made the original books, and the first few seasons, so good. Sonic is another example where the artists and designers just took too many liberties with the design of Sonic that wasn't necessary. The safe bet is to always perfectly recreate the original version. Detective Pikachu is a great idea. Apart from the detailed fur and 3D nature of the film, no Pokemon in that film looks drastically different to one from the game or anime. But yeah, so many things have come out recently that simply change way too much for their own good. When tapping into nostalgic emotions the best way to do so is to just stick as close as possible to the original - Spiderman PS4, Avengers: Endgame and Dectective Pikachu did that well. Altering too much only generates criticism. Sonic, Assassin's Creed movie, Monster Hunter World, newer Pokemon games, Kingdom Hearts 3, Game of Thrones final season, are all just a few examples springing to mind.

Memorial Day started as an event to honor Union soldiers who had died during the American Civil War. It was inspired by the way people in the Southern states honored their dead. After World War I, it was extended to include all men and women who died in any war or military action. Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day. The current name for this day did not come into use until after World War II. Decoration Day and then Memorial Day used to be held on May 30, regardless of the day of the week, on which it fell. In 1968, the Uniform Holidays Bill was passed as part of a move to use federal holidays to create three-day weekends. This meant that that, from 1971, Memorial Day holiday has been officially observed on the last Monday in May. However, it took a longer period for all American states to recognize the new date.
