- The 1996 Olympics in Atlanta were rocked by a bomb that killed one and injured more than 100. In the rush to find the perpetrator, one man became a target. There was only one problem. He was innocent.

This man was a hero that saved countless lives and THIS is how we thanked him. I know it's too late, as he died in 2007, but as a fellow Georgian, I'd like to say this:
Thank you, Mr. Jewell. Thank you for putting your own life on the line in order to save what is believed to be hundreds. I, along with many Georgians, are ashamed of how our local government treated you. May you be remembered not as the terrorist you were accused of being, but as the hero you really were.
R.I.P. Richard Jewell.
What is sad, is that Richard Jewell's name does not appear on the memorial for first responders. He is given no credit. What's even more disgusting is the millions of people who think he is guilty to this day. Saw an interview with his sister not too long ago, and she gets phone calls for some supporting Richard, but mostly those still saying he is guilty.

Where can I find your letter to the editor from 1996 that outlines your support of Richard Jewell? Or the protest that you led against the media bc YOU "knew" he was innocent?
I didn't know, and I'm not going to act like a Saint bc hindsight has gifted us with the knowledge that we didn't have for 88 days, and TRULY didn't acquire until 2003. People are also HUMANS, and REAL Humans, make mistakes.
@@alysiamerdavid-wasser9165 There was no evidence and by studying human nature people like to lie and manipulate. the bomber called 911 saying that there is a bomb in the park. it was not Jewell's voice.And An AJC journalist wrote a story that while the 911 call was being made, R. Jewell was in the park. It was not possible for Jewell to leave the park and walk to make the telephone call.
I really feel bad for Richard Jewell. I'm really glad Clint Eastwood is making that movie to shed light on what had happened. I'm sure this is why he died so early, millions thinking you are a bomber would put immense stress on someone.
Well, said, sir! He was young to die, only what, 44 I think. "Complications due to diabetes" Yeah... and I bet the stress of all this BS is what exasperated his condition. So sad. I wish he were alive so we can REPEATEDLY give him the apologies he deserves.

I just watched the movie and my heart is broken for his and his mother, when it came up at the end that he died in 2007 i cried like a baby I’ve never cried like that before, I agree that the reason he died so Young was all the stress he had to endure I can’t imagine what that felt like for him 😩😩

It shocks me that some professors use news clips to provoke discussion, but none have used Retro Reports. I find these are the best for looking at an issue. Looking at all sides, and how the issue has progressed over time. Love this series!

This guy should get compensation for this for the rest of his life. The US government pays people for their own bad decisions, it is justified to make sure this man never has to work again if he doesn't work again. That is the price you pay for leaks. It is only fair.
He died 12 years ago.
That money comes from hard working tax payers. If he would have been compensated for the rest of his life, it should have come out of the pocket of those responsible for harassing him.
He sued the media outlets who harassed him and got 500k from it
I don't think the FBI is going to pay a settlement out for exonerating an innocent man.
@@Sphere723 Aside for the fact that he is dead, Law Enforcement have paid settlements out to those they exonerated. You act like the FBI is absolved of their sins because they exonerated him. I dont think he sued them, all I know is some agents were fired (which in Law Enforement, means they were transferred or promoted LOL)

I blame the big mouth cops. It is one thing to investigate the guy , but to release so much information to the media when you know what the stakes are , is unforgivable.

Not only this, if they know their colleagues is doing something criminal, unethical, there’s no way they will confront them or tell on them.
I’ll never understand that, if I know a friend committed a crime, especially a murder/rape and I don’t go to the police, I refuse to talk, lie to investigators about it, I could be charged, but they never charge cops for doing the same.

I use the name of the American Hero, Richard Jewell as a verb, every time I see the media falsely accuse someone of a crime that they did not commit. In-fact, among the people who Richard Jewell cleared from the vicinity of the bomb were many foreigners, so maybe I should stop thinking of Richard Jewell as an American hero, and think of him as a world hero instead. To me, he will always be a hero, He will also always be the symbol for all the victims of a corrupt media empire that cares more about their ratings that the scores of innocent victims whose lives they destroy every year.

To be fair, the backdrop to this was the 1984 LA Olympics where a police officer actually did plant a bomb so that he could diffuse it and be seen as a hero. That fact gets lost in all this, but I think it's probably the reason the FBI looked heavily into Jewell as a suspect.

I know exactly - Im a white male, over 40, no family or friends, and I live alone. I fit the profile of a molester, mass murder, and / or serial killer. I assure you Im none of those LOL, but according to their "profile" I should be sitting in the middle of my empty house, surrounding myself with weapons and clipping out psycho notes one letter at a time from magazines, and have writings ALL over my wall LOL. I assure you, Im fine. Just a boring guy (kinda explains the no friends thing tho, doesnt it? LOL!!)

Watching this as well as Clint Eastwood's film for a 3rd time on Richard Jewell is a trip down memory lane. I spent 22 years in Atlanta. I lived in SandySprings. I heard and felt the explosion at the clinic E. Rudolph bombed there way back in 1997. Richard Jewell was a true hero in EVERY sense of the word. He put his own life at risk saving who knows how many lives. What's sad is how the AJC published its initial slanderous article about Mr. Jewell in its rush to make money. It's sleazy journalism to say it nicely. Its even sadder that the AJC fought the defamation lawsuit brought on by Mr. Jewell against them for 15 years. Its beyond sad that the AJC won. And then they acted offended by how they were portrayed in Eastwood's film. Get real. Shame on the AJC! I hope Karma comes back around and their papwr goes outnof business
