  • Watching this scene of Coraline closely, I'm more confident than ever that these ghost kids are puppets and that this whole thing is a set up to mess with Coraline's head and sense of reality.

    Maybe the ghost children can't leave because the Beldam has the ghost eyes therefore "anchoring" their souls inside the Other World.

    I like how after the ghosts say "and ate up our lives", Coraline is holding onto the bars of the bed, looking like she was in a cage, symbolizing her imprisonment in the other world.

    I believe the three ghost children were real, because if they weren't how can we explain how the ghost hands helped Coraline close the door when the other mother tried to open them in the end, or Coraline's dream where the children were angels and warned her to get rid of the key and when she woke up the objects that symbolized the eyes were broken?

    • @curtisgannon8475

      Because the actual ghost children behind the mirror are puppets, not the ghost ‘eyes’ that’s where the actual ghosts spirit is kept- having them materialized in that room is to scare Coraline. However once Coraline gets the eyes, that’s when the ghosts are actually helping her

    • @NightCloudI
      @NightCloudI 6 месяцев назад +3

      @@curtisgannon8475 ok, but then why did the 'puppets' tell Coraline to find their eyes if they are there just to scare her?

    • @IsabellaManoutcharian
      @IsabellaManoutcharian 5 месяцев назад +2

      @@NightCloudIit could be the bedlam trying to keep her in the other world for longer to buy her some time. It could be while she thinks of another plan or just rests to get more strength. I think her looking less and less like coraline’s mom means she has less and less power reserves. The thinner version is her looking more and more like her true self (this takes little/no magic)

    Perhaps the ghost children can’t leave and do what they want because they sold their souls to the beldam. If you sell your soul, it’s not like you’re just free after death.

    The eyes are said to be windows into the soul, so I always took the ghost kids as saying the Beldam took their eyes in order to take their souls. So she eats up their souls through the button eyes, likely slowly to prolong the amount of power she can use until her next victim enters her web. 😨

    Well, just bc they are ghosts, that doesn't mean there are no barriers. Maybe they really couldn't get out of the room. Also, why would the other mother puppeteer 3 kids to convince coraline to 'get away from the other mother?' 🤔 Wouldn't it make more sense to create someone that will convince coraline the other mother isn't that bad? I mean, look at how she sewed other wybies mouth into a smile or how she kicked the other father bc he was scaring coraline. Honestly, I don't think the other mother controls everything. Like you said, she could easily take what she wanted from the kids if it were in her control. Otherwise, why would she need the approval of kids? Also, good luck on your channel

    • @MeemahSN
      @MeemahSN 6 месяцев назад +2

      I think the kids' approval is a case of "the illusion of choice," meaning that the kids don't actually get to decide, and it's simply a manipulation tactic.

      The beldam has thier sould and is constantly draining energy from them. In the book it says they have become weak enough to where the light hurts them. Also having thier soul gives the bedlam a level of control over them. She can keep them from passing over to heaven for example.

    Fangirl, please forgive this long comment!
    Since you referenced the book on another point I feel okay doing so here. Your distrust of the ghost children can also be validated in the book because the Beldam tells Coraline, “Nobody sensible believes in ghosts anyway- that’s because they’re all such liars.”
    Also, the space she threw Coraline into was behind a mirror. The book also references this ancient mirror. There is mythology abound about mirrors being alternate realities and that it can trap a person’s soul. Some believe you must cover all mirrors/windows for a period of time after a person passes away so that their souls do not become trapped rather than moving on to their awaited afterlife. I think this is an interesting point concerning the idea of the children being trapped specifically in that spot. Okay, now onto you dear FanGirl! I love your theory analysis videos. They are always fun and entertaining! Sorry to hear things are bringing you down. I hope your channel can resume being a positive outlet for your creativity! I haven’t watched the whole video yet (commenting to help algorithm a bit) but I was upset when I saw CZ’s World post about Coraline theories. I like his content but this is the second video he’s made hating/debunking Coraline theory videos and it made me annoyed.
    You don’t have to agree with the theories, there are lots of channels that disagree with each other but move on after mentioning briefly. He came off poorly to me because he makes up his own theories too but because they’re not his, they’re not credible?
    I love listening to different theories from different creators because they interpreted the movie and/or the book differently from me and enjoy hearing their perspectives. If I don’t agree with one I make a note and move on.
    Keep up the amazing work!! Your channel has gotten me through some depressing times. I hope that your channel and videos get the PROPER recognition that you deserve.

    Maybe the reason that the other mother does not simply reach out to pluck out the kid's eyes is because she needs their consent to do so.
    Seriously she could have done this at any moment of her desire when coraline was there but instead she was trying to be nice to coraline and eventually get her to agree to have button eyes. Also, considering eyes are windows to the soul, I believe the kids trade their souls with the beldam (in an exchange for more food and toys) when they give consent to sew buttons into their eyes. Maybe one eye simbolizes their soul. Anyways I think the amount of trouble the beldam has gone through so far supports this idea.

    When I watched the movie, I was unaware of the book, but I also knew Henry Sullek had worked with Tim Burton on The Nightmare Before Christmas, so when these three were introduced I rolled my eyes and thought, "Here come Ooggie Boogie's Locke, Shock, and Barrell." My eyes then grew wide as I realized the similarities between the two trios and another group of kids from the animated Beetlejuice series from the Neitherworld.

    the reason why Coraline thinks playing a game with the Beldam will be a good shot is because the cat says, "She loves games." The first night in the Other World, the Other mother excitedly offers to play a game. Coraline knows she can't beat the Beldam by force, so her only real shot to finding an escape is to offer a trial of wits. She may already know that she might not win, but it would at least give her time to snoop around

    The children's eyes are symbolism for imagination. The ghost children are unable to explore the world for their eyes because the facsimile the Other Mother created was based on Coraline's imagination, which only Coraline and the puppets can explore. Coraline is a sort if parable. The real world is a world that Coraline initially dislikes because her parents are acting like workaholics who don't have much time for Coraline and seem less fun and less caring. This is a common problem even for relatively good parents under stress from work and other adult concerns. Coraline is tempted to embrace a world that is entirely her imagination, not realizing that as you age, your reality can help expand your imagination if you don't lose your child's eyes. The Other Mother needs to consume the imagination of children to survive, because all she can ever create is based on the imagination of children, because she has no imagination of her. Causing children to hate the real world rather than embracing the duality of the real and the imaginary is how she turns children into ghosts.

    The ghost scene is the scariest part of the movie for me. Haunts me for months in my dreams when I was a kid 😂.
    Anyway, when watching this scene and taking it at face value, it doesnt make sense. Even looking at story-wise perspective, it still doesnt make sense.
    Usually, when the main character needs help or hint to take on the villain, they would stumbled it upon themselves. In this case, the story have to make Coraline herself found the ghost, perhaps by running into unknown room or something else. Just like when she met the cat just after running away from other father's room. Instead, here we have Beldam specifically thrown Coraline into this room. The main villain who can manipulate her environment to be whatever she's like and even create literal voidness. And she somehow wants to punish Coraline by trapping her in this room? She cant escape anyway with sleep-teleportation thing or running away outside pink palace, so why bother?
    Unless, of course, as you said, Beldam WANTS this ghost scene to happen. So that Coraline can get extra motivation that she HAVE TO, CAN, and WILL win. And the plan worked.

    I've never noticed before, but the reason she is pulling the door is that in the real world, the living room door is pulled to open, and in the other world (only the bug's version), it's pushed to open. I just think it's a weird detail, especially since the movie director said that everything is intentional.

Bc im from germany and obviously in german they dont call her beldam - but they used a word I didnt even get after watching several times, because its so old, i had to google it. They call the other mother „alte Vettel“. As i googled the word - it makes so much more sense!! Even the translation here is perfection. If the ghost children are/were in fact real children:
    Lots of old myths exist around mirrors-Some of them including a Mirror's relationship with souls and the ability to capture them. (If I remember rightly, that's part of where the superstition about a broken mirror causing 7 years of bad luck comes from)
    This could explain both why the Beldam chooses to put Coraline there for her time out-The mirror traps souls in any and all forms-And *possibly* the missing children's eyes as well. Perhaps the Beldam had to place at least one eye in the mirror to keep their souls trapped there (so the children still "have" them in that sense, as that's what their spirits are tied to), and kept the other for herself. Maybe for a souvenier, maybe to re-capture the ghost children if the other eye(s) went missing, or maybe specifically as a bargaining chip for Coraline (which would be the most plausible for your Limbo theory).
    And in turn, that could explain why the Beldam wants the eyes specifically in the first place, beyond her ability to "fuel" the Otherworld-The eyes are tied to the soul, which is another common association: "The eyes are the _window_ to the soul," etc.
    And then once Coraline brings the eyes back to the real world (if she does in fact make it back and isn't stuck in Limbo), then the children *can't* be bound to the Otherworld as long as part of their soul is still bound to the real world. Which also works as another reason why the Beldam would want said eyes-It's not just a physical attachment for the soul to cling to, but also a very clear reminder the children can still come and go freely as long as they possess at least one of their own eyes and make it back to the real world.
    *Addendum* Related to Last Week's Scene:
    The Mirror and Souls could also explain how the Beldam expects Caroline to be able to come out-Maybe the Mirror does in fact have some ability to open a portal depending on what Caroline is feeling in her Soul, so if she were to truly come around to the Beldam's side in some way, down to her Soul, it would have opened for her.
    And between Last Week's analysis and the Soul idea, again if we're assuming the children are real and not just puppets, maybe the Beldam simply can't _see_ their ghosts for some reason. That could explain how 3 of them ended up trapped in the mirror together and the Beldam would put Caroline in there without a second thought, and then the ghost children themselves don't realize it-They hide under the blanket when they hear or feel the Beldam near by out of a habit of being terrified of her.
    Alternatively, it could just be that as wayward souls, the ghost children are just cold and huddle for warmth. Remember the sentiment of people often experiencing cold chills when spirits are nearby. It's not like they really have anything better to do or take their minds off of it if they're trapped in there.

  • @raven6565

    The cat comment got me thinking. What if the ghosts aren't controlled by the Beldam but by the black cat instead? I'm comparing the Beldam and the cat to It and the cosmic turtle from the Steven King It book. What if they're both separate entities? Maybe the cat is trying to sabotage the Beldam so she doesn't become more powerful than him? And she is aware of this fact but can't stop him from entering her domian. Instead she has to resort to limiting his power while he's there. Like maybe part of what is draining her power isn't maintaining the illusion itself but some sort of power struggle between the two of them? So, instead of playing the long con patiently, the Beldam is messing up and pushing too far because she really needs Coraline's eyes to finally one up and defeat the cat. The cat knows this and creates these imperfect ghost characters to try and impart this knowledge to Coraline and get her to do his work for him.

    So I think the book explains this a bit better but basically the ghost children are in limbo and because they don't have their button eyes aka their souls they can't move on to the afterlife thus forcing themselves to stay trapped as ghosts. In the book once Coraline finds all their button eyes they disappear finally leaving for the after life. They also make a comment about how they still fear the Beldam because she is a creature that eats souls so one day she's going to consume their buttons and thus destroy their soul. If U know anything about Anicent egypt and the weighing of the heart ceremony its kinda like when the heart is heavier than the feather of Ma'at (feather of truth) pronounced "Ma-Au t (ah on the a like u're saying ought) and therefore gets consumed and destroyed by the crocodile god although versions vary.
