when she smiled, she looked so young and carefree. but when she was serious, she looked so mature and so experienced. it’s amazing what facial expressions do. she was such a pretty model!!

I found myself looking more at the model herself when she smiles in pictures, and more at the overall outfit/vibe when she's not smiling. Smiling felt more personal, closer to her as a person, while keeping a straight face puts more emphasize on the clothes just like on the catwalk.
I felt exactly the same!
As soon as the model is smiling, you rather look at her face than the outfit and it felt so much more personal.
So I guess both expressions do have their purpose :)
Don't change your style but definitely add some smile to your style. 😘

This video was really interesting! You should do a second edition where you try to get non-professional models (just average people lol) try to look serious in photos. I always associate serious poses with magazine covers and models (which I am not), so whenever I take photos, it's more natural for me to smile and laugh than to be serious.
The serious ones look really high end and professional and the smiling ones look like a photographer shooting his/her best friend on a random day for fun accidentally gets her discovered and a modelling contract through the photos 👌also the model killed it and I was really impressed with how well Manny directs, how aware of his surroundings he is and his confidence shooting 👏hats off

The model is stunning and you both are amazing photographers so both smiling and serious photos look great - however I like the serious ones slightly more. I feel that the seriousness highlights the model's features a little more if that makes any sense? But I'm no photographer or anything really

Great video as ever Jessica! My own thought on whether models smile or not really depends on what you're trying to portray. For instance, if you're a fun, young outdoor/surf brand, then smiling might work really well as you'd hope would-be buyers of your clothing would want to 'inherit' the fun they would bring. So I think the client's brand personality is a really important thing!

They're both really cool. When she's smiling I'm not as engaged in the surrounding elements of the photo as when she's serious, like I noticed myself looking at her outfit more when she was serious than when she was smiling. Like when she was smiling I was content enough with her face and what she was doing but the stoic made me look around more after being like "wow she's gorgeous but what else is there to look at".
The Matadore I completely agree with you. I noticed her outfits more when she was serious. In her smiling photos, I was more focused on her smiles 😊

I'm a lot more attracted to the smiley ones. Totally different vibe but the smile makes it a lot more relatable, authentic and approachable. Like "hey! I could do that :D!" instead of "holy crap I could never be this beautiful". It's so weird because it's the same person.
In short the smiley ones are more "insta" (fake candid) Pic and the serious ones feel more "magasin like". Soooo interesting. Sarah is so so so gorgeous 😭❤️

My first thought was that in terms of fashion photography smiling in photos is something generally seen in commercial photos/marketing and the more bored expression is seen as more high fashion, and then you made the comment about Macy's and immediately confirmed for me that you had a similar thought process, which easily explains your style/the mood you go for in photography generally not having as many smiles as you shoot more in a high fashion style
Wow! Now I know how a professional model do their job like... I used to thought that model just has good appearance and just do whatever. But Sarah is amazing, how she poses, how she control her expression and everything. Good job guys
Smiling made it so much better. It didn't take away from the image at all, if anything it added to it. The atmosphere completely changes in the photos in which she's smiling :)) i think it's so nice.

I really like the idea of the shoot. I liked most of the happy shots because they got me to smile. Had me feeling happy. For some poses smiling looked a little odd when the pose looks serious. But I really like the happy faces in this shoot. I want to shoot smiling faces too. Daaang and props to Sarah. Great job. I would like to get both serious and happy emotions. But you all as professional photographers would know what image you want to have representing you style of photography. When the model smiled, I was instantly drawn to her face. Her outfit became secondary. The vibe of the photo also became a whole lot more personal.
On the contrary, while she was being serious, her face became the background and I was paying attention to her outfit and accessories more. The vibe of the photo also became more serious and professional.

Also, you should do more blind challenges where you have to do exactly the same shot, and see how different it is. Or like create other photographer's favorite shot of all time? I don't know. I love these challenges. If I ever get money for an actual camera (not my crappy phone), I might be like a real photographer. In the meantime, I'm playing and practicing with crappy equipment so when I get the good stuff I'm actually decent!

It’s very interesting how it is not common for models to smile as much now in pictures. Now I think it is more unique to smile. I love it!
As a model I relate to the smile, working mostly commercial jobs they ask so many ways to smile, showing teeth, small smile, happy smile, surprise smile, smile with the eyes haha etc.
When you told the model to smile, i always put a smile on automatically as well lol
I did like both, the smiling and the serious. I just think we should see more of smiling pictures on social media - because it has a positive emotional impact.
And well of course Sarah is a very beautiful woman and with her asian face she's totally beautiful smiling.
I liked the photoshoot on both smiling & serious poses but the background on some of Many's shots were a bit distracting I wish he would have done'em with less dof.

I loved this challenge! I feel like the moody poses and facial expressions really fit the cold urban vibe. But the smiling ones are also an interesting and fun contrast.
As for me, it depends. I like the vibe of some pics shown here when the model is smiling bc it gives a carefree and youthful vibe. But in others, the seriousness of the expression englobes the surrounding. Really interesting video!! 💯

As Jessica said, it depends on what you are trying to portrait. I feel that the edit on these pictures was moody but in the ones she was smiling it felt like happiness around sadness.
I had to turn up the brightness on my phone up the video just moody I love it & my two favorite people together❗️

Never seen a model laughing even behind too. Every work has its difficulties and safer side and that's the most difficult thing to not to smile for a model.
Such a HUGE height difference between Jessica and the model. Not sure which one of them is cause the difference...a-hhum, but, it's cute!! Jessica is comfortable with models and very respectful. Good to see.
