  • Firstly i apologies for the roaring winds and rain, it was just one of those days...All days seem to be like this at the moment....For our 10th historic county top we chose the 1772ft summit of Shropshire, Brown Clee hill. Brown Clee Hill lies five miles north of its sister and neighbour, Titterstone Clee Hill. The highest peak of the hill is Abdon Burf, at 1772 ft high with Clee Burf at 1673 ft.
Several air traffic control radar masts on the summit of the hill can be seen for many miles around. They, along with the ones on top of Titterstone Clee Hill build up a picture of all the aircraft in a hundred-mile radius.
A toposcope (recently built) points out local landmarks and is sited at the summit...
Shropshire historically Salop is a landlocked county in the West Midlands of England, on the Welsh border. It is bordered by Cheshire to the north, Staffordshire to the east, Worcestershire to the south-east, Herefordshire to the south, and Powys to the west. The largest settlement is Telford, and Shrewsbury is the county town.
The county has an area of 1,346 sq miles and a population of 498,073. Telford (155,570), in the east of the county, and Shrewsbury (76,782), in the centre, are the only large towns. Shropshire is otherwise rural and characterised by market towns such as Oswestry (15,613), Bridgnorth (12,212), and Newport (11,387). The county contains two districts, Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin, which are both unitary areas.
Shropshire is generally flat in the north and hilly in the south, where the Shropshire Hills AONB covers about a quarter of the county, including The Wrekin, Clee Hills, Stiperstones, Long Mynd, and Wenlock Edge. Part of the Fenn's, Whixall and Bettisfield Mosses National Nature Reserve, which extends into Wales, occupies the low-lying north west of the county. The River Severn, Great Britain's longest river, runs through the county in a wide, flat valley before exiting into Worcestershire south of Bridgnorth

When you see the moors so waterlogged and unable soak up any more water, it really brings home why so many places are flooded on the lower river valleys. A pain for us out walking, but so much worse for people whose homes are affected.

Good on you both for not letting the weather stop you getting out and getting to the top as well, it sounded real rough. A broccoli and stilton sounded a dam fine idea to me, especially piping hot, you sure needed it in that weather. A 7.5 mile hike in that weather was good going, cheers Alan

You’re an inspiration to me, since we’re having the same weather here and I’m looking for somewhere to take a hike. A wet start in Shropshire, we are just in from a wet and misty one and just getting our feet up now. Nice to see others as daft as us to go out in all weathers. I bet you drove through some nice weather to get there too! That is a long way! Looks a really memorable day and the rain stopped for you. Well done on pushing out to do the full circular, always tempting to cut it short when you’re soaking wet. Thats a lot of airmen to die at that sight, German did you say? Some really atmospheric shots and great hills in the distance. Bet the locals get great tv reception with all those aerials! Those horses are having a lovely day out! Wow some of those paths are really flooded. 15:16 froze unfortunately but well done on ticking off another county top 👍
