Incredible effort. And what a collection of fish that is! Was that a grass carp at 7:39? And at 11:25 there appear to be lots of silvers on their side as you were talking about roach and rudd. Were these not roach? And did they survive in the silt?
Yes, we have one grass carp of 48lbs. It’s inevitable to lose some of the small fish, it was mostly bream, but we put a lot of small roach and rudd back.
@@matthewcollinsangler Interesting. Do you have the one grass carp purely for fishing variety purposes, or does it serve an ecosystem purpose somehow? And would it ever breed with the regualr carp? I guess thats inevitable. Do they just struggle in the congested water, or is it the silt? Is what it is I guess.
@@simonc4077 The grass carp was stocked by the people who created the fishery in 2000, so we inherited it. We don't see any baby carp as the eggs are eaten by the silvers.
Fascinating to see the process and stock. Wishing you could do our local park lake, carp disappeared in October, and it would confirm the rumor of a 40lb common that's supposed to be there. The idea of thinning out the bream would also be nice, we have some dustbin lids sized that love boilies and anything particle. I would just like to say how profesional you are at what you do, you should be very proud of yourself and team you really do care for the lake and not only in it for the money like some
Very interesting about the idea to leave the big cats in. Those are some serious predators and grow to some massive sizes as all they will do is eat and eat and eat. At least youre always on top when it comes to fishery management so you'll know if they are impacting the fish stocks.
Would personally get all those oversized tadpoles out!!....let other predators thrive and create a natural balance..... that's just my option tho...... great video 👍😊
one of my local lakes did a full drain down netting of there specimen carp lake removed 1000kg of silver fish from it i new there was alot in there as ive tryed using bread in the summer and it was like piranahs. 😅 they had some pike in there thinking it would keep it under control but no chance havent fished it since the netting but it isnt a lake that produces alot of fish may get 1 or 2 come out a week
Great informative video Matt with some outstanding stock , love the tiny Zanders too . Do the Cats spawn and come through too ? Real in sight into good successful fishery management. Well Done Steve M
Interesting Matt, about the Cats and Pike not mixing well. A couple of small waters I have fished with cats to 60+ also produced pike to mid 20’s, I would think it creates an imbalance in the number of small pike but a few big one grow on. Mind you I guess your biggest cats could manage a 20lb Pike.
Had a thought just now.. How do you sustain 4000 lbs of fish in 4 acres? For reference here in the USA our Largemouth bass/ Bluegill ponds hold up to 400 lbs per acre of fish IF you have fertile water AND you supplementally feed high protein fish food to your bluegill.
Fascinating video. Personally I would have removed all the cats along with the bream and leave only carp, roach and zander. I think cats and zander don't get along very well as the zanders are easy prey for the cats.
I didn't understand why you wanted to take out the baby catfish, until I saw the adult version. I suppose babies would eat a lot of your carp and other small fish. And I'm surprised those huge ones haven't eaten all the small stuff. Why don't you want the bream? Here in the States people want them in lakes or ponds. I'm not criticizing, I'm curious. Maybe you do have some carp spawning but the big catfish eat them? Seems like bream would be good catfish food. What do those big cats eat?
I’ve got a completely different perspective, my business is offering carp and cat fishing holidays to anglers and carp anglers don’t want to catch bream or small catfish. These smaller fish use food and oxygen that I’d rather the bigger fish have. It’s a tricky balance. The carp eggs are eaten by the silvers. The big cats will eat anything but they’re also lazy and will eat bait that anglers put in the lake.
U gotta know what you're doing ,we netted one and we disturbed all the silt and mud and all fish died within 24 hrs ,we had clogged there gills with crap ,all dead 😢
That's because if we had them, we would see them in the netting, the carp eggs are eaten by the silver fish 😊 The survival rate of carp spawn is very low.

Did you net any Sturgeon? I saw a picture of one on your website..Always good to see healthy chunks, looks like an anglers dream.
Yes, we have one sturgeon and we saw it during the netting 👍
Longer net, better result. Some real chunks there Mr. C.
Yes mate 👌

Hi Steve, thanks for the support 👍 Yes, cats breed readily!! If we didn't get them out, we'd be inundated with them.
That's how U want a fishery I'm not into carp but at that size between the predators that I fish for I wouldn't mind
It's winter on my lake and we are dealing with an otter! Always something to do..

For reference here in the USA our Largemouth bass/ Bluegill ponds hold up to 400 lbs per acre of fish IF you have fertile water AND you supplementally feed high protein fish food to your bluegill.
We have a supplementary feeding program and our customers put bait in the lake every week during 7 months.
What do the cats eat if you’ve taken all the silvers out ?
We haven't taken all the silvers out, only the bream, we put all the roach and rudd back in the lake.
Fascinating video. Personally I would have removed all the cats along with the bream and leave only carp, roach and zander. I think cats and zander don't get along very well as the zanders are easy prey for the cats.
Hi Matt, what will the cats eat for 3 months if you take out all the silvers?
Hi Niall, the cats are dormant during the winter, between October and March, they're inactive, and there are still plenty of small silvers left.
@ I didn’t know that. More dormant than carp? Interesting. Thanks

Wonder if i can get away with doing this at my local gravel pit cos F me if i can’t catch a bloody 40 😂
So catfish breed in the pond ?

The catfish eat them unfortunately.
