Purchase your cutting boards and mineral oil at Bear Claw Knife & Shear:

Thank you.
Letting it sit for 1 hr is my preference
thanks
I would gently wash it first and then oil when good and dry. Never leave the board wet, never use hot water and never ever place it in a dish washer.
A lot of butcher blocks are made in my home state. Petoski ,MI.🇺🇸🐻
Hey Jerry, if you can suggest any that might be willing to wholesale some of those blocks to us, let me know! We are always looking for great USA manufacturers. And thank you for your comment!!!
I use flax oil. It is a polymerizing oil, so it dries and it is food safe.it is also cheap.
I never thought about using flax oil on a board. I use it on cast iron. I'll look into that. Thanks for the tip.
@@richardsteinbergmakingknives Richard, I use it on my Blackstone griddles. It protects them from rusting. I assume it will protect wooden butcher blocks, as well.
So, do you do the other side too?
Sure, if needed.
My boards slips around all the time. What is the best way to stop it from doing that?
@@feline501 Hey Feline, I just dampen a paper towel sheet with a little water, fold it in half and place it under the board. Use two if a larger board. That should take care of it.
Thanks for your comment!
@feline501 I don’t know about you, but both sides of my cutting board look a lot alike. When I need to use the board I don’t want to have to pause and decide which side is the work side.
I suggest oiling the first side like Richard recommended. After you’ve wiped off the excess oil, flip the board over and do the same on the other side. Be sure to treat the edges as well. Why not? It takes just a few more minutes.
Can you personalize the cutting board at bear claw
We sure can, up to a size. Purchase the board and follow up with a call to the store and they will take care of you. It's really easy to do.
@@richardsteinbergmakingknives Thank you sir!
Question: About a new bamboo cutting board, do I wash it first with warm water and soap, let it dry then apply mineral oil. Or should I apply mineral oil it first and then wash it after??
Following
Throw it out. Bamboo is very hard on knives and dulls them really quickly. You want a hardwood board. Target has large acacia and rubber wood boards for like 20$.
@@Skrelnick222 I think it also depends on what the manufacturer uses to bond the bamboo. For my Ikea butcher block I only saw a real difference in edge retention when compared to end grain cutting boards. If you've got 3-400 bucks lying around, go for it. If not, get the bamboo one for 20 and sharpen your knives a little bit more often.
I use old engine oil on mine
your cutting board or the fence? lol
