Hey Cpl Kelly, I've been going back and watching any of your videos that I somehow missed and I gotta say, you was killin it back then as well!! I've never seen anyone actually dig a fighting hole, until now!! I know that had to be an azz kicker, especially in the desert setting!!! On to the next one....
When I was in the Navy I had a Marine friend show me how to do this. I'm pretty sure I was the only sailor on the ship who knew how to dig a fighting hole.
*Corporal, you truly are dedicated to providing us with pure content. I am impressed how you literally dug that pit just so we could see what we should be aiming for.*
We dug a pond in our back yard and in the process we hit something metal and BIG. I think it is a buried car and we hit the roof. Illinois black dirt digs easy.
Pretty much shows, that people haven't been in the army. Those with the minecraft character as avatars etc. You can expect a lot of shit in the army. Your whole company will have to wake up in the middle of the night, because there is this one room, whose trash can had one candy wrapper in it. "What should we do, to make sure this never happens again?" "Oh I know, grab the shovels and lets bury your fallen comrade pvt. Candy Wrapper like a true soldier" And then you'll dig a fucking 2m deep grave for that candy wrapper, salute it when he's lowered into the grave, sing the anthem and dig all the dirt back in the grave. Not to mention, you can't dig mindlessly. You'll have to remove the top soil carefully first, so you can place it all back later. And then you'll go in the showers, whole company has to clean up in 15 minutes and by that time it's already 6:00AM and you'll have to wake up. Most likely the OP was smoking when he wasn't allowed to. So he had to bury the cigarette butt in the same manner.
And the number one thing said right afterwards: "Hey, higher wants us to move. Fill these holes in and get ready to go." Then you have to go dig new holes, lol. I hated that.
The Storm Shelter spent a good portion of the morning and afternoon doing this at ft. polk, then about five hours later, exactly what you said happened. fortunately i only ever had to dig three. once in basic and twice with my unit. the rest of the time we were moving so often it would be pointless.
I Never had to dig such hole in my military training. But then again there is basically only 20-30 cm earth before granite ground everywhere so it would be kinda pointless.
First 6 inches in northwestern Pittsburgh area are nice dirt. Then 3 feet of the thickest and rockiest clay ever found. Then the rest of the way will be a mixture of granite, sandstone and slate. I sure dont miss digging that shit. I rent an escavator to dig my trenches or holes now.
I live near Hazleton and own one of those shovels. NO WAY your digging a 6foot hole with one. Not with out pickaxe, axe or hatchet . To many Large roots, large rocks..
One of my first jobs was digging trenches and holes, I learned to keep my shovel sharp! I keep an e tool around and have since I was a kid (I like holes, we didn't have tv) I sharpen the straight edge, it's easy to do and maintain with anything slightly abrasive.
wow you said a lot I hate Reservist calling themselves SOLDIERS they don't know about those midnight calls about JOE or Joe's family, Awards, NCOERs, your family, then you deploy multiple of times then you get back then you are PSC to another unit and off again. or you get hurt then you get med board
Darrly Simon uh, yeah, we deal with all that shit in the reserves too, and we also get to stress out about real life in between all the green weenie bullshit.
Functional, necessary, and safe. Recommend logs approx 7' long (top of berm to top of berm) across top for added protection. Hole can be opened and closed by stacking as needed. Shelf space is still intact. Can protect better from harsh weather conditions and animals...maybe hand grenades...lol.
Doctrinally, he would have also dug a grenade sump on the front end at a 45* downward angle if he was worried about grenades, though I like the idea of the longer overhead logs. Every time I had to dig a foxhole was on the side of a mountain in a desert, no trees sadly
When your survival and combat effectiveness depends on how well you make your fighting position, its best to get it right whilst you've got the chance! As civilians, digging a survival space may be the only means to have shelter from the elements, so knowing how to do it right is worth learning. Going to ground takes on a whole new meaning when you're actually sheltered below the surface.

I just came back from basic training. People don't know how much work it is to dig. It was so much work. I was paired with one other soldier and we had to dig a hole based at the side of a treeline. The upper soil was too loose to dig with our little shovle so we had to dig by hand. Underneath there were a lot of tree roots we had to chop through. It was a lot of work. Took half an hour to get knee deep.
What about a grenade sump? We had 3 guys build a fighting position where the trail entered our area of operations by digging down & building up using sand bags & then berming the dirt on the outside we had it covered but I don't remember what all we used. We added foliage all around & over with a small tree on top. To include the M60 on tripod. The Capt. & 1St Sargent came into the area about dusk creeping along real slow lights out foot on the brake. First thing they know I'm almost nudging the 1'st Sargent in the ribs with an M16. The stopped real fast. He asked where did you come fro> I pointed & said over there . He said over where. He said I don't see any fighting position. I said that's the general idea. They had to get out of the Humvee & inspect the fighting position. It's worth a good laugh when those in command get surprised.
Step 1: allow the 0311's to dig their holes. Step 2: inform an 0311 that his hole has a sector of fire on an avenue of approach, and that you as an 0331 will be placing your 240 on his hole. Step 3: take over the hole, and claim it for yourself.
Step 4: Get informed by platoon commander that machine guns aren't needed and go hump the alpha shelf with CAAT. Actually happened. With steps one through three. Lol I would say those poor souls, but I was lonely and sad right there with them.
Yep, to dig in my yard I have to pour water on it, let it soften, dig a foot or so of sloppy clay, then repeat. Good news is that the berm will stop small caliber rounds once it re-hardens.
Its amazing to think that there was a contiguous trench system from Switzerland to the Belgian Coast built in only three months between December and March 2014. This 600 mile long system began with hundreds of thousands of foxholes like this one .. Connected together.

Yea, was wondering why he omitted the granade sump, it's just an arms deep hole in the side sloping down from the bottom of the water sump. Theory is that you can kick a granade down there and pray you'll live....
That ground looks fun to dig, a few stones from what I saw but nothing too crazy! Location looked really good, the natural micro terrain 50 meters around you was what caught my eye!

My daughter and I were near Bastogne back in 2013 and visited the woods overlooking the village of Foy. To our surprise the Airborne's "fox holes" are still there - guess they were too busy to fill them in afterwards! Not as deep as this because the ground is thick with pine tree roots but even so they look like so many shallow graves. A hot September day out in the sunshine, the chill in the shadows was enough to quickly drive us away. As my daughter said: "the place has a bad feel about it." If you're ever near go take a visit and try and figure out how they managed to leave the relative safety of their holes and walked across nearly a mile of open, snow covered field to attack their objective. I got an Nato issue E tool a few days ago and sharpened it, I tested it in my kitchen, it made quick work of an onion. I look forward to testing its abilities for branch chopping duties and of course digging!. another excellent no nonsense upload thanks mate.

Wow! ... that is A LOT of work for a video! Even if he had help between scenes. Thanks for the hard work and realistic demo CPL Kelly! If you are willing to put that much effort to your videos I'll subscribe.
Dug these in Nam every time our platoon, company, and battalion set up in a perimeter for the night or longer. No matter how deep I dug it, when we took incoming mortar or artillery it never felt deep enough. When I stood up in my fighting hole the edge of it was about chest high.
I had to dig fighting positions by the score at Ft. Lewis, Wa back in the day. Complete with overhead cover, grenade sump, and everything else. Two shovel full of rock for every shovelful of dirt; what a pain. No need to put in a water sump; as much as it rained Western Washington it would be useless. Just watching this makes my back hurt.
Nice work, looks like you made a two man fox hole. Using a E-tool takes twice the effort, bet that was a good work out. No grenade sump? Army parapets only have a 6 inch shelf for resting your elbows. Looks like the marines do it a little different. FM 15-5 is a pretty good read, you should check it out. Great job, just 1 critique: Clear away some brush from your field of fire. Awesome vid!

When setting up a position you should always remember SLoCTOP. Security, location, communication, targets, observation, position improvement. Position improvement should always be constant. Parapet is never a bad idea if you are expecting indirect fire.
I remembered my brother-in-Law joking when he was in Air Force, and he got ordered to dig one for some exercise. He gave 50 cents to a local to dig one for him. He got his jeep squared away and ammo food all set up. When the Captain came by to inspect it. He said he almost lost it when he was complemented on how well it was. He even had tie to polish and oil the E tool.

Yea, was wondering why he omitted the granade sump, it's just an arms deep hole in the side sloping down from the bottom of the water sump.
Theory is that you can kick a granade down there and pray you'll live....
Embrace the Suck!
Yup!!!
What was he looking for? Think this dude has seen too many John Wayne movies
As soon as he said “if it ain’t raining you ain’t training “ I subbed
That would take 2 men digging in NY a full day maybe more with all the dam rocks
William Fotey yup we're supposed to be digging holes soon for underground residential we're gonna have to have pickaxes they said.
That's true I spent all day once and only got one foot down
Going through ITB right now. This week is defense week. I’ll be living in a Fighting Hole for days. Thank you, Cpl.
Lol ok boot
Are you still in the hole?
How was ITB ?
That ground looks fun to dig, a few stones from what I saw but nothing too crazy! Location looked really good, the natural micro terrain 50 meters around you was what caught my eye!
Who else though the title could have been "how to dig a grave" just with first glympse at the thumbnail?
edwardstarcock swinger In the beginning, you really have to try and keep the thought of your head that you may very well be digging your own grave. Once you've dug a few, you almost wish that it were your grave
They're nicknamed graves sometimes, although that usually refers to the shallow, sleep forever kind.
If it was a grave there would be no reason for the dirt to be place evenly all around it. Graves are dug woth the dirt in one pile.
"Dig Your Own Grave and Save!"
looks like your near my old duty station 29 Palms lol. oh how I remember digging those. Cool video
Captain Spike excuse me? prove I "served"? who the f××k are you?
Captain Spike lmao.... go away troll... you made a post exposing me? lol... not only can you go see my RUclips channel, on facebook there is a page by the same name... enjoy
Captain Spike btw.... go see my video about black Rifle Coffee Company.... your mentioned in it, we'll your snowflake tears are lmao
Good Ole 29 stumps, don't miss that hell hole one bit.
Nothing like the smell of Lake Bandini in the summer heat.
Someone get this guy a tv show ill watch it .
Yup I learned something - awesome hole for when Marshal Law is knocking on the back door 👍
Martial*
If it's martial law, it won't be the back door... and they won't be knocking.
...and they'll make good use of your freshly dug hole
My daughter and I were near Bastogne back in 2013 and visited the woods overlooking the village of Foy. To our surprise the Airborne's "fox holes" are still there - guess they were too busy to fill them in afterwards!
Not as deep as this because the ground is thick with pine tree roots but even so they look like so many shallow graves.
A hot September day out in the sunshine, the chill in the shadows was enough to quickly drive us away. As my daughter said: "the place has a bad feel about it."
If you're ever near go take a visit and try and figure out how they managed to leave the relative safety of their holes and walked across nearly a mile of open, snow covered field to attack their objective.

I never liked digging my own potential grave!
band of brothers
That why you aint a marine
buz butler There's a reason why it was 6x2
@@AldoSchmedackThis is only for medium range battle with infintry
At Close range you can get dead by Hand Grenades Or by Mortars
I like how most people can't take a joke lol
I never thought digging a hole could be this badass
my training was on the Canadian shield in ontario, couldnt get 2 inches down
My uncle was a Canadian soldier in Cypress he was a sniper
I got an Nato issue E tool a few days ago and sharpened it, I tested it in my kitchen, it made quick work of an onion. I look forward to testing its abilities for branch chopping duties and of course digging!. another excellent no nonsense upload thanks mate.
*PLOT TWIST: It's actually a "Dakota Bonfire Pit"! Lol!*
*Awesome video as always. This was all new to me. I've heard of such things but have never thought it through.*
Man that second guy is lucky didn't have to dig at all.
Took my wife out in the woods to practice digging one of these. She took off screaming and left me there. 😁
Damn, I knew this guy was strong but after watching this I'll be calling him 'sir' if I ever run into him in the real world.
Why would you insult a good Enlisted man like that? Does he look mentally disabled to you?
Hold on, he works for a living.
Sheeoot, if ya like that you ought to see me 33' sandstone mineshaft...
i cannot thank you enough for bringing me knowledge that the military itself would deny sharing with me 💜✊🏴
I think this is the first video of yours I watched years ago. Congrats on 1 million subs.
Wow! ... that is A LOT of work for a video! Even if he had help between scenes. Thanks for the hard work and realistic demo CPL Kelly! If you are willing to put that much effort to your videos I'll subscribe.
Pretty smart putting the fire in the hole with ya, then the light is less likely to be seen
Popped into my recommended videos. Subbed immediately...
Me too! Finally someone has all the right content in one channel!
Brings back memories , roots and rocks too ! Aching back and blisters when done incorrectly .
Thanks for the video. This knowledge might come in handy one day. Especially for us civilians. God Bless America
Outstanding thank you very much sir
SEMPER FI 🇺🇸 Brother
man do I wish Ohio's soil was like that, that soil looks like what you would find in a planter pot.
I tried doing in the red clay of south Georgia one time..... I fired up the tractor after about 3 hours and no joy. lol
yeah, you make a fighting dent in that dirt
I was about to comment on how impossible this would be in ohio
Yeah man. Nothing but clay and rocks here.
kelton davis dig 3 inches and hit a rock surrounded by clay intertwined with roots.
Everyone should be digging one today in case Virginia goes south tomorrow
Or in the soon-to-come 'aftermath' of that Kyle Rittenhouse trail...
This guy is 100% the coolest man i have ever seen on youtube
What did I learn today?
That you must sleep well at night.
I have dug a well and leech field and so know digging.
Glad to know more about its use.
The best part about this is watching someone else do it
Holy cow ... 4 hrs of digging! 15min of digging is already backbreaking.
Benito Mussolini He's probably using a spoon tho.
The Ulsterman alright you had your stereotypical fun, now kindly stfu. He didn't ask for any of that.
Isn't this the video that made you famous???? LOL Remember this is the video where I first found you... Make sure there is no smiling when you dig!!!
+Central Oregon Survival Network I found the video on a guys web page. He was making money off of it. So I deleted it
Ha ha ha.... right...
So great to see a hole like this again. Brings back memories.
Dug these in Nam every time our platoon, company, and battalion set up in a perimeter for the night or longer. No matter how deep I dug it, when we took incoming mortar or artillery it never felt deep enough. When I stood up in my fighting hole the edge of it was about chest high.
Apparently, a soundtrack can even make digging a hole exciting.
Nice video very useful information, I've always heard the term "fighting hole" now I actually think I can make 1.
And if you get shot it doubles as a grave
One well thrown grenade and ya got yourself a soldier smoothie.
Thank you for actually digging the hole on video. Very very helpful
Now fill it back up soldier...
🤣😂
someone might fall into it... maybe our brothers or sisters
Spot on, but he's not a soldier, he's a Marine.
Marines are warriors not soldiers
Yeah I don't think he's going to reply back to ya.
Imagine leaving home and telling your wife
Okay I’m going out
Wife: watcha doin
Him: digging a hole
Nice work, looks like you made a two man fox hole. Using a E-tool takes twice the effort, bet that was a good work out. No grenade sump? Army parapets only have a 6 inch shelf for resting your elbows. Looks like the marines do it a little different. FM 15-5 is a pretty good read, you should check it out. Great job, just 1 critique: Clear away some brush from your field of fire. Awesome vid!
The water sump can act as somewhat of a grenade sump, especially the foot-deep ones
Clear away too much brush means you might as well set up a sign saying I am here please kill me
What is a grenade sump
@@mintybadger841 a hole inside the fighting hole that the bottom curves into so that either you kick the grenade or it rolls by itself inside the hole, so that when it blows you're not hit with shrapnel
It aint raining we aint training ! I herd that so much ya would think we had the same instructor. Great lesson Cpl. Kelly thank you for your service !!
those E tools are pretty good, just for fun I sharpened the edge of mine and sliced onions and chopped a small tree down, if it works it works. all the best from the UK.
I aint got time to bleed! 😀 you're a machine m8 damn impressive
Well brother I'll give you credit where credit is due, or should I say respect. Digging the hole for a video takes Determination. Digging the hole with an e tool vs a full size shovel and pick takes GUTS. Two thumbs up. Thank you for the video.
+mackdaddy1911a1 Thank you Sir
one hell of a workout
wow that is some USMC stamina
If I dig a hole like that in the Swamp, it's a pool in 15 minutes.
Love what you do.
It's great catching up on the "vintage" material you produced! Cheers!
nice shelter im a german prepper and we can not have guns but in a hole like this i can also fight evektiv with a crossbow or a bow (sorry for my bad englisch )
You can have guns... just dont talk about having them.. ;)
They not have boating accidents where you live?
Bruh
Yay lets break the law
These holes have a severe weakness: aircraft. You’ll find most modern militaries have them.
When setting up a position you should always remember SLoCTOP. Security, location, communication, targets, observation, position improvement. Position improvement should always be constant. Parapet is never a bad idea if you are expecting indirect fire.
Question: how long did this actually take you?
Julio Gonzalez lets just say the fire fight was over and he’s still digging while the rest of the team is moving on
Digging a fighting hole can take 2-3 hours if you have good soil and not sand. On average, its about 5 hours. Thats after clearing loose sand/dirt.
He even had tie to polish and oil the E tool.
my son and I are going to be practicing these this summer. thanks for the vidoes, Corporal!
Now Ladies! THIS is how you defeat your enemy! When they see your prowess at making a fighting hole, they will know they are already defeated.
We had to do this with full gear on. Not fun at all!
Dude stop whining i had to do it in Finland at winter with rocky clay :D Half of this size and took 6 hours :D (Ground was Frozen)
Jerry Keränen was it fun? I’m a child and I want to learn more.
DarkGuitarKid: Why is it people from overseas do everything harder and have it worse than Americans. Then they call us whiners??We have rocks our ground freezes but they have it worse no matter what for some freeken reason. Blah blah blah!
i dug a hole like this for fun.... Now i have dug all kinds of them in the woods and use them when me and my buddies play airsoft. Also thx for your service :)
That dirt looks so good! I wish all my holes had dirt like that
