Bloody hell, you were out of work for four months. If that isnt age discrimination I dont know what is when you should be able to just walk our of a job and a Friday and into another on the next Monday/s.
I am younger than you, I also work in finance and was out of work for 7 months in London no less a while back. Sometimes the job market is shit. I didn't turn to RUclips and have midlife public meltdown. Sometimes you just don't get the role because there are more suitable candidates out there - and its not always because they're younger and you're no spring chicken. You just have to deal with it and apply for something more suitable which you eventually clearly did.
I will add that I am a finance contractor so I work on 6-12 month projects. That means I have to change jobs ever 6-12 months. I love it. I also have to ride the ups and downs of the job market so when times are hard then I have a bigger gaps between roles but I just deal with it and moderate my expectations.
Anyway, I'm glad you found work I hope you can have some self reflection and see that your initial thoughts of being on the job scrap heap were just misguided or delusional.
The only role you should ever be considered for is office bitch.
No, that's just how it is. It's been that way for decades. Why do you think the younger generations are screaming? The market is being flooded with cheap labor and at the same time, it is not producing a lot of jobs.
What a t*t of a reply, stuck up your own a*se.
So you say he’s no spring chicken and then say he’s delusional for having a midlife crisis on the internet. Those 2 statements contradict I suggest you proofread your comments beforehand.
Everyone interprets their situation differently. You seem to have a calmer view towards your months of unemployment. It's not possible to explain one's point of view but you can't blame others for having a different one. Fadetogrey got worried about being out of work after 4 months and took to youtube after perhaps trying everything else. That is absolutely fine as he wanted to know who else is facing his dilemma being near 60 and not having work despite years of hard earned skills. Further, recruitment agencies throw old people's cv's in the bin which is a known fact.
Well done! I am 57. About 6 weeks ago I answered an advert on Ebay small ads here in Germany for a part time free newspaper deliverer job. Quite a while back the snob in me would have said "No way" but I swallowed my pride and answered. I absolutely love it. Wednesday 10am there arrive 630 free newspapers and I have a map and a list of where not to deliver. It takes me a good day and a morning to get it done, my bike has "a basket a bell that rings and things to make it look good". Soon I will invest in a small trailer. I have delivered in extreme heat but this job will get me in fresh air in winter which is vital. You get paid to get exercise basically. I had only one delivery a week but while I was out there last week the boss rang and offered me the 2nd delivery of the week's circuit, so i am now at the maximum allowed. My boss is far away, only a virtual one really, I work exactly when I want and i get to gossip with neighbours. The rest of my time now i spend mountain biking the Alps or winter skiing. Stuff careers.
I like the Pink Floyd lyric thrown in
@@tuborice4571 A month or more ago I drove my caravan down from Bavaria to Italy. Tuscany (saw the field and farm where Russel Crowe strokes the wheat) then did Rome in a night (campsite right nearby) then south to Amalfi and POMPEII! Saw the amphitheatre where they filmed PF at Pompeii, and I listened to "Echoes" driving past Vesuvius on the motorway! "Live is for living and living is free" (Barclay James Harvest).
Congratulations! When you talked about the dwindling energy to keep doing what you did before, I can really concur. I'm 62, the career I worked in has left me behind which to be honest I really don't mind and was happy to finally stop clinging on and let go. It was high pressured and for the past 5 years it was getting more and more of a struggle to keep the enthusiasm or interest I had before. I wasn't enjoying it at all. 60 was a milestone birthday for me. My whole attitude to life changed, what was important changed, what I wanted changed. I now want an easy going part time job with no pressure, my first job was as a shelf packer in a supermarket, I'd be quite happy to return to that. Realising you have lived a lot more life than you have left is so sobering. I'm not depressed about that, I just want to take advantage of the health I presently have to appreciate other things. I don't need lots of money to do the simple things that give me pleasure now. I took on two allotments, side by side, which has transformed me and my mental and physical health has never been better. I'm starting to really enjoy life in full.
Employers need to realize that this age group is likely the most reliable work force.
I plan to retire at the end of 2025 at 62 after 36 years in Telecom as a sales engineer. My wife will retire in May 2026 and she's loving life! But walking away from a good income stream and building the nest egg to living from the nest egg is a scary proposition couple with the alarming recession and CPI report
I feel your pain mate, as a fellow retiree, I'd suggest you look into passive index fund investing and learn some more. For me, I had my share of ups and downs when I first started looking for a consistent passive income so I hired an expert advisor for aid, and following her advice, I poured $30k in value stocks and digital assets, Up to 200k so far and pretty sure I'm ready for whatever comes.
My advice: for newbies to grow financially this year, invest. Saving is good, but investing elevates your finances. Why newbie make huge losses on trade is because investing without proper guidance can lead to mistakes and losses. that will stop you from trading, this has been one of the biggest problem to new traders, I've learned this from my own experience
Tracy Britt Cool Consulting was my hope during the 'bear summer' last year. I made so many mistakes but also learned so much from it, and of course from Tracy.
She is really a good investment advisor. Was privileged to attend some of her seminars.that's how I started my own crypto investment
Congratulations, extremely pleased for you.
For me, as was, 40 yr old engineer with 20 years experience, it took 11 months and over 1000 applications to find a job, so much for "skills shortage". Most of that time was getting messed about by agencies.
You probably do not tick their D.E.I box
I'm also an engineer. Got laid off in my late 40s, was never able to find work as an engineer after that. DEI doesn't include older workers.
Congratulations! ... good for you, hope your new job works out & keeps you going until you're 60.
Well done. I am in same situation. Came across your video and it was good to know I'm not Alone.
you need to be 22 with 30 years experience !
Hurrah!!! Well done. I'm very encouraged. You were brave to do videos so it encourages me that being brave isn't the new 'don't do'. Told ya told ya you're not the only over 50 in work!
wow count yourself blessed just four months out of work . happy to hear and encouraging . some have been looking for over a year. well done for bringing people together on this issue .
Been out 6 months now. I’m 50. Definitely not easy. Well done.
Back on the rat race🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉😂😂😂🎉🎉
That's such great news. Congratulations must be a huge relief for you. Good luck in your new role.
I went self employed as a gardener (mainly lawns and hedge trimming) 15 years ago, after five years as an IT infrastructure contractor and a period of office based work. I don’t want to have to work as an employee ever again, my gym is my work and I get rainy days off, do about a three day week and manage my expectations accordingly. I’m always turning work away and turn sixty next year. I am slowly retraining myself to add a few more strings to my bow so that I can still be useful for the time when I can no longer lift my mower over walls, up steps and climb trees for the occasional pruning job.
I drive lorries. One of the advantages of the job is young people don't want to do it and as a result the average age of lorry drivers in the UK is 55 years old. "You're over-qualified" is something you will never ever hear.
A lot of people our age have served in the forces. For those who had who got a HGV licence it would be a good way to get some work. If you let the entitlement lapse because you didn't take your medical at age 45 all you have to do is take a D4 medical again to re-instate it. You'll need to do DCPC training to get a DQC card, you'll also need to get a digital tachograph card then you're good to go. Maybe take a day at a driver training school just to get back into it then sign up with an agency and off you go. There's plenty of agency work where drivers are booked daily so you could literally decide you just want to do a couple of days a week and find work for that.
Kind wishes from NYC! Congratulations to you on the interim role--- enjoy it and use this momentum to propel you forward for more new opportunities. Blessings to you and your family. We 50-somethings and older have so much to offer the work force!
Congrats, happy for you, been in your position during covid so I know how it feels
Hey! Congratulations on the new job. I commented on the previous video. I hope the new role goes really well for you (I'm sure it will).
Congratulations! Wishing you all the best 🙏
I'm on my 60th Job application at the moment since the 30th July 2024. For someone who has been out of work previously for 6 months, I can categorically tell you that there is a huge problem with ageism within the employment sector. The chap who has posted his good news mentions the term a 'fish out of water'. I can absolutely understand this as this was me a couple of years ago. The oldest designer within a room full of teens. That was a 6-month FTC and as much as I'm grateful for the employment, I'm hoping that I don't end up in that scenario again.
Congratulations 🎉 That's fantastic 👏
You look happier & upbeat 👌
I enjoyed listening to your current experience with the world of work and like the natural backdrop. I appreciate your positive attitude to life and your experience in the job market, and look forward to keeping in touch with your channel. I'm 53 and still in work, but have applied for a couple of jobs recently where previously I would have had an interview and now I'm not hearing back at all. I'm increasingly wondering if the job I'm in now might be the one I stay in until retirement simply because I won't be able to move elsewhere.
Well done buddy. Your positive attitude paid off after all those setbacks
Well done . I’ve done contact jobs on the railway the time scales always run further … hopefully your job carries on
Congratulations. Hope the job all works out for you.
Great news, I'm so pleased for you, you deserve a break. They are lucky to have you and if you're able to budget so you have cash to get you through the lean times then you can have the best of both worlds - productive spells with long breaks in between. I hope it goes well for you.
Congratulations for the new job! That's great news.
Congratulations and good luck in your new job,
Well done keep positive, prediction you will get more offers ! Just retired at 59 and its the best way to go.
Good luck with your future!!
Never say never and maybe consider a career change.
The workplace needs us seniors around, experienced and considered opinions are priceless!
Well done mate. Turning the corner
Congratulations. … I read the other comments and with some saying it should be easy to get a job… well, it isn’t. The days of leaving one job and getting another a few days later have gone. I am 56 and have been economically inactive for 3years now. I stopped applying for jobs after a while, disheartened and also fed up of the interviews where they were saying I was over qualified. Or obvious ageism was the rejection reason. Looking back at the job roles I interviewed for, well, most of those companies now do not exist… so I would not have been employed for long. The market I was in is now majority contract only, very rare to find a permanent role. They are short term, low pay and bullying environments… can understand why some companies have failed and folded over the past few years. I am happy just muddling along and now I have access to my personal pension I will just accept that it will be enough to live on and go enjoy myself. I am glad I had the foresight to financially plan for this situation while I was working.
Thank you for sharing your experiences during your journey, raising awareness on the issues you have encountered and explaining how it looks from your point of view.
Some people may see this as having a crisis or feeling outraged enough to share it online, while others like me would see this as an opportunity to see* (edit) what might be waiting for us in the future. Some people in your age group may not be aware of the state of the job market and also how things changed/evolved (especially if they never had to change jobs until they are 55+), but it does not mean some companies aren't shying away from hiring anyone 40+ or even 30+ (especially for certain roles).
Things I learned from you:
Perseverance is the key
Not being shy and sharing your experiences online can help you to create (or be part) of a community
Each year/age comes with its own challenges, raising awareness about them and how you tackled them can help others facing similar challenges
Good luck in your new role! :)
Congratulations 🎉
Every cloud has a silver lining. Congratulations!
Congratulations mate🎉🎉
Congratulations mate, and good luck with your new role!! This gives me hope to continue looking even after being out of a job for 18 months.
Congratulations on your new job - and also for having shared your journey with us. Excellent news!
well done my friend. well deserved
Omg. You are so professional, you have wealth of experience! Kids are just less qualified and they just don’t want to get caught out. I worked in a company with senior management your age. Best experience ever that was. Friendly professional atmosphere. No drama. Quality work. Please stop calling yourself old. I watch all of your videos- great content!
Congrats! You never know, may be extended and keep you ticking along for as long as you need it. Just subscribed to Manchester Wise...I'm sub number 2.. look forward to that content.
Regardless of employment issues ... He just seems like a nice solid sort of guy!
Congrats! I landed a new job today in a PR agency. I decided to move careers from training to PR at 52. I have always wanted a career in PR but felt it was beyond me. I just landed a job with a brilliant agency run by an amazing lady who also happens to be a well-regarded Exec coach - I can see me blossoming under her mentoring. I feel blessed. Onwards and upwards!!!
Congrats, never give up.
Congratulations! That’s awesome news. Part of the reason it has been a struggle recently is due to summer holidays. Tough time of year to be job hunting.
Congratulations mate. Hope it goes well.
Congratulations! Take things one step at a time. Good things comes after every challenges 🙏
Many congrats! You are an inspiration of how perseverance pays off!
He was out of work for four months, not four years.
Well done mate.
I'm off to the dwp today for my 2 weekly meeting. Most depressing day of my week. 8 months now, still looking applying.
Man great work and 4 months is really good for this market no matter the age, there are many with 6 months and 1 year and many juniors not finding at all in this period, I have already about 2 months in and also thinking more flexibility of what type of role I can contribute
Great news ...Good luck..😊
Congratulations 🎉 & well done
Congratulations mate.
I am very happy for you. Congratulations!
I'm so pleased for you, welcome back to living again ❤
Congratulations!!!
Well done. Good fortune for the future
Congrats, keep us posted of how you are doing. Best of luck.
Congratulations on getting the role even if on interim basis - agree on needing to be flexible and realistic given how contracting and job hunting can go now - however unfair it really is. Take care mate and I will be subscribing to new channel 👍
Congratulations.
You must have been walking on air when you landed it. Bottle that feeling, remember it if you feel down.
So glad you found work- hopefully it will last for some time.
Congratulations and well done to you!
Congratulations!🎉
Well done! Congratulations! Keep posting on YT!
Well done matey - the exact same timeline happenned to me. I just put it down to businesses having a lack of confidence up until the election. I don't know about you, but now I'm questionning whether I still want to do this kind of work, but the pay is good of course. I still haven't found a good balance between well paid and well being. All the best
Well done and best of luck.
Awesome ❤ bro congratulations
I am delighted you found a job. I am also 'over the hill' by several years to you, and yes age does sneak up on us, but to be honest, I no longer had the energy I used to have, and I no longer deal so well with stress. I no longer want to work at 100 miles an hour, and prefer a slower speed now 🙂
Great news very happy for you. Hope everything goes well in your new job and ypu get a extension on your interim
Hey that’s great hear! Congratulations!
Congratulations!
Great news! 😊
Congratulations 🥳 🎉👏👏👏👏👏👏
Congratulations
Congratulations mate well deserved. A video talking about finances would be good. How you’re budgeting now and mortgage payments and how to balance saving and having fun etc
Great for your confidence. Just keep at it.
Overqualified for a role is basically a nice way of letting you down. Especially if you’re aware of what the job entails and the salary on offer. Congratulations, there will always be something if you persevere and you can’t put a price on wisdom 😉
Congratulations, glad you got a job !!
Well Done Mate
Hopefully, I'll get one soon too!
They might keep you on ,my pal working in IT got a Contract for 3 months ,3 years later he's still there working remotely on Top Dollar...he refuses to go on their books and they can't do without him now.
He's just turned 50 with another 10 years of private school fees to pay!
As you get older you need to reassess what’s important in your life and what makes you happy. Work is a means to an end, other things are more important. I have learned that needs and wants are entirely different things and it’s perfectly possible to have a happy, enjoyable life with less emphasis on material things. I treat every day as if it could be my last, enjoying the positives and largely ignoring the negatives. It works for me!
This is great, in a way the video is what got you the gig
congrats. Its a tough situation but glad you pulled through. As my dad says it's easier to find a job when you have a job.
Well done!
I would really recommend shaving your untidy "gray" stubble off. It really ages you and makes you look tired. This is a tip I would give most guys to be honest. I don't why this untidy just got out of bed look is popular in the UK. It never used to be. Most people look crap with this style, unless you really have a well maintained and even beard, plus exceptionally good looking.
Congratulations!
Things are going to have to change. Its very common for people to be working well into their 60's these days so I think hopefully over time ageism will not be so prevalent.
Well done! All I got were four zero hours contracts, which were all zero and no hours
Jammy springs to mind he now has 2 jobs.
I like this vid. Glad to hear you found something. You have the right attitude towards work.
Congrats on your job brother. Take care.
By the way, I dont think 'old man' when i look at you. 55 aint old!
Im 62. Still working on building sites. Heavy work most of the time. Still fit enough. A lot of it is mental. Mind over matter etc.
Congratulations on securing a new job! Regarding isms. It appears to me that there is more focus on recruitment departments ticking certain isms boxes than others. As far as I am aware, company recruitment policies are not monitored for ageism.
Glad you have something now.
Glad you're back. I really think there are a few things to consider for the future now you've broken out of the rut. In contracting you have one objective and that is to find your next role - but WHILE YOU ARE IN YOUR CURRENT ONE. I know of which I speak - 66 year old IT contractor here in the UK, exactly your ltd co set up. This has worked really well for me over the last 25 years with almost no breaks..
3 months to go before your contract ends get out on LinkedIn and contact your old clients personally you did a good job for in the past. Contact the agencies (plural). Up the activity levels.
Can I suggest you listen to your tone of voice on your breakout video? Man you sound down/defeated. I know why, but that can spill into your interviews. I was not all that surprised when you said you were getting interviews but not getting past that stage. I know how tough it can be but you know as well as me that interviews are a technique like any other. We are both getting loads of practice the way we work. I LOVE interviews - get feedback from your agencies about how you come across.
Age discrimination is around yes, but if you are the best person for the job and convince them they'll give it to you. They are hiring contractors because they have a specific task that needs doing. They don't give a monkeys about you or your age if you are the person who can fill the temporary gap.
Be ready to change contracts before the end of the next contract if necessary. You are your own employer and for the good of your business you owe your first loyalty to yourself NOT the firms you are contracted to.
Finally you are NOT on the scrap heap if you don't want to be. No need to reconcile yourself to periods out of work. Just look at the reasons why you are not getting the roles. Its probably NOT age discrimination.
Incidentally I love the Visage referencing Channel name, but make sure that's not your approach to life....
I'm the same age as yourself i look back and recall being the youngest in the organisation now I'm the oldest. I used to watch the clock hoping the hands would turn quicker so i could leave. The benefits of getting older is the skills and experience you gather along the way, thankfully i only have the odd age related aches and pains and have to wear glasses to read but i now work more hours than i ever did. For the last 6 years I've done the same job for two different local authorities two full-time jobs I'm out of the house for five and not back till gone 10 in the evening, there days when I would happily kick it into touch then i have to remember i get two good wages and my pension is doing very nicely but if I can make it to retirement it will have been worth it.
Congratulations, hope it works out.
Congratulations,i am 58, i only work 3 months sometimes more doing contract work,i really don't care any more,if the pay rate is good i will work.Good luck for the future.
Congratulations on finding a role, 🎉
Great news i have just subscrided
Congrats
Congrats! Ignore any negativity
You did well to get back into the workplace so soon, when I lost my FT job back in 2005, I applied for thousands of jobs from 2005 to 2008, not 1 reply, but that’s because of my age & LTU, now 63, with health issues, from experience the 2 things that’s employers hate is old age & LTU, it goes against you big time!
Congrats on finding some work as you were getting a little disheartened being out of work for 4 Months but i never get why people find they have nothing to get out of Bed for if they are not going to Work.
Had plenty of time over the Years not Working, sometimes through choice, sometimes not but never felt like not getting out of Bed because i had no Work to go to, in fact i always took it as an opportunity to focus on my other interests and hobbies without the distraction of work obligations.
Ironically i only tend to work part time these Days and find i still don't have time for all my other none work interests LOL.
