Day 132: David and Absalom - The Bible in a Year (with Fr. Mike Schmitz)

Fr. Mike reflects on the story of David and Absalom, and points out the lack of forgiveness and repentance on both men's part. God forgives us no matter what, but without us mirroring that forgiveness, rebellion can easily rise up. Today's readings are 2 Samuel 14, 1 Chronicles 18, and Psalm 14.
We hear every day from our community how The Bible in a Year helps to capture hearts and souls for Christ. While we’re happy to make it free to our audience, it’s not free to create! It takes a significant investment to produce the podcast and distribute it free-of-cost to the public. You can make a gift of financial support to help defray these costs and enable us to keep bringing evangelizing digital media to all those searching for God: tinyurl.com/ygywsqpa Thank you for your support.

Please pray for Souls in Purgatory.
The Prayer of St. Gertrude
Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen.
Lord Jesus, I humbly pray for myself, Father Mike, & all the people participating in the Bible-in-Year podcast. May your word take deep root in our hearts & transform our ways of thinking, deciding, and acting. May your grace open our ears to hear & understand God's voice in the Scriptures that we may revere & treasure both the Old & the New Testaments which God has prepared for all who desire to enter his kingdom. Send us your Holy Spirit to give us the Spirit of Knowledge, that we may know God and know ourselves. Give us the grace to approach the Word of God with meekness & humility, & with an eagerness to do everything God desires. Help us to be diligent students & faithful disciples of your Word. May our hearts never grow dull & may our ears never tire of listening to your voice. Amen.
Thanks! Keep up the good work, Fr. Mike and Team Ascension! God bless you all and the fellow listeners

Viva Cristo Rey!
Fr. Mike, thank you for this beautiful explanation about our loving Father and His full forgiveness which we must in turn give to others. This is a huge problem in our world. It ultimately through the ages leads to feuds between individuals, feuds in families and eventually between countries that lead to war. May we all learn to offer unconditional forgiveness and love to one another.
Sometimes I am like Davide because sometimes I find it hard to give complete forgiveness. Father thank you so much for the way you breaks down the word for us. In so doing you let us find ourselves in these words. I think that is serve as an examination of conscience, because it help us to realize that some of the things that do or not are not so good in the eye of our Father, God who is so good to us. I am praying for you and all the other priest and religious. Please pray for me too that I may grow in faith and to be willing to give complete forgiveness.
I am and I’m enjoying this so much!
09:37
Father in heaven, we give you thanks and give you praise. You are a good God. And you are a good dad. Lord, God, you are a good dad. You're a good father. And you continue to meet us. You forgive us completely, but you also call us to re, complete repentance. You offer forgiveness totally, but you also call us to totally come back to you. So help us please, Father help us do that. Help us to come back totally so that your mercy may totally transform us. That your grace may totally transform us. That your love may totally renew us. Lord God, bring us back to you. Let your face shine on us. And we shall be saved. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen

Amen! ❤🙏
Simply thanks for providing this wonderful method of studying the Bible.
Repentance and forgiveness are so important in living our lives. Carrying unforgiveness in our heart and soul is so destructive. Please dear Jesus help my grandson understand the importance of forgiveness. He has trouble with that. In your name I pray amen 🙏.
I am here for the year.
Amen 🙏.
Lord, You are our restorer. Apart from you, we can do no good thing. Thank you for your complete forgiveness and granting us full access to your heart and home when we repent. Continue to convert our hearts and minds to be like yours. May we never forget that resisting repentance and true forgiveness always leads to rebellion/separation from you. Help us to act humbly when we do wrong and with compassion when someone wrongs us. 🙏🏻
No true forgiveness,
No true repentance,
No true reconciliation, Leads to rebellion.
Thanks Father Mike, for this is very true and there is no peace either. 💧
Gosh, the Holy Bible is full of so many Truths for our lives, thanks for making them so clear. Your explanation of repentance and forgiveness is so good to hear.
“How great is the mercy of the Lord, and his forgiveness for those who turn to him!”
Sirach 17:29
I’m on board in 2024
God bless. Praying for you, Fr Mike and all.
Prayers from Australia. I have always struggled with Bible reading/understanding. Your narration is outstanding. Thanks and God bless you Fr. Mike
Fr. Schmitz doesn't claim to be an expert on the ancient world yet he seems to have a really insightful understanding of what we need to know from the text.
Hello from USA. God Bless You
This is a timely reading for me! I am struggling with "being forgiven", I guess, because I have a hard time forgiving myself. Thank you for your guidance Father Mike.
I think of how St. Peter suffered after denying Jesus 3 times..........did he forgive himself? He knew he was forgiven.
It's harder to forgive myself than others.
Thank you for your ministry. Thank you for this bible in a year and the catechism in a year. Which means everything.
Thanks!
Our Lady of Fatima, bring this administration to repentance and reversion/conversion to save their souls. Jesus, have mercy on us all , AMEN 🙏📿📖
I look forward to this everyday. I’m glad the Catechism is next!

🙏🏻
I wonder if David seeing Absalom was like a mirror to David that made him think that he should have done something to punish Ammon but bc he didn't Absalom took the matters into his own hands..just a thought
amen
🙏🙏🙏
Amen 🙏

Pax Christi
God bless you all and Father Mike for his powerful words such a gift. The Bible very often tells us to recognize our sins as it frequently brings up these truths of sinners and how each is dealt with. 🙏
❤❤❤
❤️❤️❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Day 132 ❤❤❤
A me N ❤❤❤
🙏
We are given complete access to the Father's heart only when we truly repent. Since Absalom did not truly repent, should he have been given access to King David's heart again? I don't think so.
Blessings
I wonder if what set Absolam on his destructive path was David's inaction on the matter of Tamar.
Maybe that is what convinced Absolam that David was not fit to rule.
Maybe if things had been different and David had protected the honor of Tamar, then Absalom would have been very loyal to David.
I wonder if, in another reality, Absalom could have been a good King.
Just posting now so I don't forget, will edit with chapter summaries later.
Day 132 - 5/12/2022
🕯🙏🕯
🙏🙏🙏🤗❤️
David’s forgiveness sounds a little like purgatory to me…….
Absalom means " father of peace " in Hebrew.
Absalom was King Davids' third son.
Absaloms' mother was Maacah.
Maacah was the daughter of Talmai, King of Geshur.
Talmai , King of Geshur was Absaloms' and his sister Tamars' Grand-Father.
Geshur was a neighbouring nation and King David married the King of Geshurs' daughter Maacah. 🕯
Thanks for the clarification. I missed that. Sounds like family interactions today. Kid does something bad. Runs to a grandparent and lives with them awhile till there is--one hopes--true repentance, true forgiveness, true reconciliation with the offended parent, so often the father. Often enough there is only surface change. I’ve experienced this myself, and it’s a recipe for disaster.
You are welcome and thank you for sharing. I agree, the 3 Ts , as you mentioned , forgivenesses, repentance, and reconciliation are the road map to healing broken relationships suffered in families. " Blessed are the Peacemakers. "
🙏🏽
So hard to forgive my parents :(
Continue praying. God will help you. Praying for you.
Forgiveness is not a feeling. I was told in confession that if you want to forgive someone, or even if you want to want to forgive them, God honours this. God bless you.
I struggle with this too. I'll be praying for you
9:39🙏
Shouldn't Absalom also seek repentance for giving his brother a plan to be alone with his sister?
10:30 I guess everyone has some parts of the Bible they find difficult. This series of events, this is hard for me.
Also, I think the thing about the wait of Absolam's hair is probably because men with more testosterone tend to have more hair, as well they tend to be more fertile. Probably emphasising that he was a strong, masculine man.
Joab sinned also when he carried out the immoral order of David to get Uriah killed.
That was a direct order from the King. That was not him doing it but executing the kings's request.
Day 132- 5/12/22
Day 132, 12/26/21, St. Stephen's Day
Hi Father. If you read this, I have a question. My son suffered a traumatic brain injury 3 weeks after birth. It was medical malpractice. He suffer seizures, does not speak, has IDD and has a host of additional challenges. I have always wondered if God punished me through James. I have been told no. And I am familiar with John 9:2. But, in the readings about David, God does say that David will suffer through his children. If you ever read this, I could really use some help as I struggle with this. Thank you, and God bless you.
