I’m a Stage 3 melanoma patient. The comment that got me the most was when someone told me my cancer was a gift. I know what they meant behind it (a gift in everything I would learn from it, etc.) but I just can’t see this as a gift in any way, shape or form. If it’s a gift, I would have liked to be able to return it!

I’m so sorry. People who haven’t gone through this don’t understand how certain words affect us. And sometimes even if what they say has some truth behind it, it’s just not what we need to hear in that moment. So sorry you are going through this, but you are not alone. Prayers for peace and patience during this difficult time 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻💕💕💕

As an atheist it grinds my gears to hear this. If we would like our child to learn something we would treat them with love and kindness. We sure wouldn’t give them cancer. I wonder how they would like this “ gift”?

As a cancer patient that is still here 20 years later, what we all need to remember are facts. Heart disease is the number one killer, not cancer. So people need to stop the fear part, direct it to heart disease.
So I keep a perspective that is based on truth. But I heard it all, every cancer patient does. We need a thicker skin at times.
Focus on love, positivity, and faith.

Yesssss! People say you don’t look like you have cancer or you don’t look sick and I find myself feeling like they think I’m lying! It’s like a slap in the face. Another thing is when they start talking about someone they know that was ‘much sicker’ when they don’t know what you’ve gone through. I know people mean well so I don’t react.

    • @Meredith_Feira

I totally understand where you’re coming from. Like, we shouldn’t have to PROVE how horrible cancer is. Regardless of the type, stage, etc. The bottom line is that we no longer feel healthy, and that is hard to face. Regardless of whether other people “have it worse.” There will always be someone worse off than you, but that doesn’t make your feelings not valid.
Prayers for you 💕 you are a WARRIOR!

Hi Meredith. I love your videos. Here's what I say, as a cancer survivor, to stay positive. 1. I've been healthy 17 years out from my cancer diagnosis and treatment. 2. If it comes back, I beat it the first time; I can beat it again. 3. Don't live in fear. For instance, we all know the statistics on car crashes but we still keep driving because we have to. When I get in the car I say a prayer to Jesus "please keep me safe", I wear my seat belt, stay alert, keep my gas tank full, my car in good running order with proper maintenance, carry extra drinking water in case I do get stuck and have to wait, and my kids can see my location at all times! Then I get on the road and enjoy myself and my freedom! Thank you Meredith for your wisdom and insight!!❤❤

@@Meredith_Feira Thank you Meredith. I live in a city with a very hot climate. I have a little insulated box that fits perfectly in my back seat. I bungy cord it in place and keep it filled with cold water bottles every time I hit the road. My kids make fun of me but then ask me for water lol. Moral of my story: do everything you can do to stay safe, healthy, etc, and leave the rest up to God. "You do your part and He will do His part"! (Joyce Meyer said that!) Love you Meredith. 😊❤❤

Oh my...some of these comments make my blood boil 😡..when my mom was going through surgery and treatment for hard palate cancer..she kept getting suggestions/advice from a friend about doing coffee enemas and fasting 🙄 She is doing very well, but some of the unsolicited advice is wacky.

I’m so glad your mom is doing well (despite the crazy unsolicited advice… I’m sure she hears it all)! Sometimes people don’t realize that we receive advice from every direction and how OVERWHELMING it can be. So glad to shed light on this, and hoping it helps people understand where I (and other cancer warriors) are coming from! 🫶🏻 thanks for being here, as always!

I’m an atheist. Someone actually told me that god gave me cancer because I have hidden sin. Now while on the one hand it matters not because I don’t believe there is a god, nonetheless a truly awful thing to say. I trust a karma will catch up with her.

Don't feel guilty. You can't change the past; move on. I am someone who was diagnosed with cancer.
If the comments are overwhelming, turn off the comments. The stress is not worth it. That's why I didn't put my diagnosis out there. I didn't want the attention, you should've have put it out to the whole world; maybe just to family and friends to keep them updated. I didn't look sick either because I used a holistic doctor and didn't go through what the advantage cancer patient goes through.
As a Christian, your hope is in the LORD. I looked to Him for comfort, strength, wisdom and direction and watched His hand at work.

I know I can’t do anything about it, and that I shouldn’t feel guilty… but that’s just the way I feel. Can’t really help how I feel!
And the comments actually don’t bother me that badly, or cause stress for me. I’m just simply sharing how these comments might affect someone going through this. I’m pretty thick-skinned, and they don’t get to me… at least not for long. But I know that if these comments were made to someone not as thick-skinned, it could really hurt them. Just trying to educate and help people that don’t know what to say, or don’t want to say the wrong thing.

My friend has had stage 4 skin cancer. The high grade kind. (Dont worry its good). She's about our age. Her medicine did the same thing as yours did, shrunk modestly and stable for 1 year, and she was sad because she wanted it to get better, but then all of a sudden, it started shrinking just like yours. Finally, after 2 years of shrinking, she became NED ( no evidence of disease). She's been that way for the past six years and counting.
It seems the reason why it does this pattern of stable for so long before it gets better because you can think of the imunitherapy drug as a cancer fighting trainer. Your immune system is not quite ready.... it needs to train and learn and when it's becomes strong enough it then can do its job. You think Joe Montana or Michael Jordan were instant pros starting out. They had excellent trainers that worked with them to become all they could be. I know that's weird analogy.
I think you're gonna see more and more of people like you with stage three and four cancers do so well because the treatments are just so much better now than they were many years ago. Look at Jimmy Carter.

These are simply comments that I, and MANY other cancer patients/survivors, have received. And like I said in the video, I don’t fault people for saying the “wrong thing” because people just don’t know how their comments come across sometimes. And that’s exactly why I made this video - so people know how these comments can make cancer patients feel. And if you think these are comments that I’ve only received on RUclips, you are wrong. We get these comments in real life too… but I choose to use RUclips as a platform to educate and help other cancer patients feel less alone in their struggles.
      Thanks for watching 😘
