This is how I first played FFVII. I grew up with Nintendo consoles and didn't get a PlayStation until 2000 for FF9. The controls were ATROCIOUS because you use the number pad lol. But this game changed my life forever. I had never heard of FF until I attended a new school and a bunch of kids were talking about it. Until then I had only played platformers and sports games and now FF is my favorite series of all-time. I still have the original box, discs, everything that I got back then. So many memories in front of that PC with this game.
I had a Gravis GamePad Pro on my PC that I used to play this game originally. I still have it and that PC too. It was basically a PC version of the first PlayStation controller with all 10 buttons. The D-pad kinda sucked, but you made do.
That’s a really nice monitor! I have a Multiscan E230 that I got for free, but I wish I would love to have a bigger (and better) model! Nothing against my lovely E230, but it is pretty entrylevel.
This is the version I played back in the day. My CD ROM drive was on the fritz, so the animated backdrops in some of the cutscenes were completely out of sync with the polygonal models on top. I once lend the game out to a friend of a friend, who was a bad sort. He was the type to steal and do drugs, but I thought “if he just plays this, it will change his entire life”. I don’t think he actually played it, but when I got it back the case was sorta smashed.
Man I might have this on pc game somewhere I have to find it. love the background stuff awesome pc win 98 computer running very smoothly. I love alien Lava Lamp that is very awesome.
Yup! Because PC at the time didn't have a midi standard :) so you got whatever your aoundcard could produce. However if you har a Yahmaha soundcard you were golden
@@retroshowcase After entering 2000, I personally feel that the integrated sound card chip on the PC motherboard is also very good and there is no need to buy a separate sound card. (Even more so now)
This game would crash on me constantly even though every other game I was playing at the time did not. There were also game breaking bugs that caused things not to work and get you stuck in an area not being able to progress. Sound was an entire day figuring out installing patches and drivers so you'd have sound and music not one or the other. I was playing Quake, Half-Life, Unreal, with no issues.
FFVII Was a big deal on the PC because cross-platform games like this were pretty new - I don't even think GTA3 was out yet. All the AAA games porting to pc was so amazing... but problematic for sure. Squaresoft was paving the way for the future haha but it came with lots of bumps for sure!
I bet you could run emulators pretty well with these specs back then. This is cool to see, though. I've actually never really played FF7. I just watched my brothers play it when we got the PS1 (mini in 2000). Super late to get it but we'd gotten the Sega Saturn in '96 and N64 in '98. Being relatively poor with 4 siblings, I don't blame my mother for thinking we didn't need one haha.
By pentium 4 times there were definitely some emulators possible but you wouldn't get the great resolution the game provides and if you had the right soundcard the awesome midi ost!
@@retroshowcase Yeah this MIDI driver sounds pretty good, the chanting is good. I had a Soundblaster Live 16 which was pretty good, at least compared to the default Microsoft GS wavetable synth
The version of Yamaha S-YXG50 SoftSynth this port came with was specially customized with sound fonts designed to mimic the original synth the PS1 version used. It never sounded quite right, but it was so much worse with a Creative sound bank.
I dont think it kept anyone from buying and enjoying it if they didnt have a PS1. I never had a PS1, for example. I wasn't impressed with the graphics at the time, but would play at friends' houses without complaint.
The old FF7 version that had 3dfx support was the best version i think (graphically) I haven't played much of the steam one, but i'll check it out one day and get back into it. I've been playing through ff4 ds remake and just recently started to target the "tails". Just got the adamant armor
This is how I played the game back in the day. Waited for the PC version to come out because FF7 was the only game on Playstation I was interested, and there were a ton of games I liked on N64 so it never felt worth it to get a PS1 just for FF7. In my opinion people give the PC version too much criticism, for one it has MUCH better video quality than the PS1 version since it's being displayed on a CRT PC monitor. For me this will always be the best way to play the game, don't care what anyone says.
Yes at 640x480 with proper sound setup it was a beautiful way to play. PC gaming back then was a little obscure - It wouldn't have been until Diablo and Starcraft that people really took notice!

The midi is fine if you take the time to set it up correctly and had a decent enough pc. It takes a lot of CPU to have it running at full speed
so nice and awesome to see one of the if not THE best game iv'e ever played on computer 🥰😊
btw the room decorations make it more cozy :)
Glad you enjoyed! More to come
Love this
Cheers!
Thanks for sharing :)
I had a Gravis GamePad Pro on my PC that I used to play this game originally. I still have it and that PC too. It was basically a PC version of the first PlayStation controller with all 10 buttons. The D-pad kinda sucked, but you made do.
Subscribed love this game and the nostalgia of seeing it on hardware of that era is great. Recommend Neverhood if you have not played that one.
I have it! Maybe the icon was on the desktop :)
@@retroshowcase So you do, didn't even notice sorry.
That’s a really nice monitor!
I have a Multiscan E230 that I got for free, but I wish I would love to have a bigger (and better) model!
Nothing against my lovely E230, but it is pretty entrylevel.
Every working CRT is a good CRT :)
Hahaha that's some 90s gaming hardcore storytelling!
click on the video to see how the game ran, stayed for nostalgia because the bombing run music is SOOOO GOOOOOODDD Edit: nice CRT btw
Thank you! Hope you enjoy all the content to come!
DAMN! this is how I played FF7 back in the day. Remmeber the big ass Boxes PC games used to come in?
I love the box!
Yeah this one's package was beautiful though. Like 4 cd's
Oh man the soundtrack was different for the pc version huh
Yup! It all depended on what type of soundcard you had and how you configured it!
Man I might have this on pc game somewhere I have to find it. love the background stuff awesome pc win 98 computer running very smoothly. I love alien Lava Lamp that is very awesome.
Hahaha glad you are enjoying the setup and don't let you 98 machine collect dust.
I remember trying all the different sound options and always ending up picking Yamaha Midi lol
Yamaha was the intended sound! You chose wisely!
why i'm crying...
Because you are happy!
Nostalgia, back then i'm playing ps1 game in my windows 98 pc using cvgs emulator
I did the same thing - what a time!
Cheers!
Never played this on PC but I actually like how the cloud and Tifa music scene sounds.
It took awhile to figure out the audio but once I found the Yahama software it came together. I like it a lot
The PC version's sound effects feel different from the PLAYSTATION version's sound effects...
(Even more so now)
The hit of nostalgia from this. Damn..... 🚬
Enjoy my friend!
The MIDI quality is really good.
It really is and it sounds super nice in person!
I had a Yamaha sound card in my first pc and midi sounded amazing as well. Everything after sounded awful
So glad I never had any of these issues. This game just worked for me and the sound options all worked fine I remember.
Oh man. Take me for a walk down memory lane, why don't you. Wall papers, Win98 splash screen, FFVII on PC ...
It really is the total package! haha I figured we should have the whole experience.... in future videos I should show the troubleshooting lol
ah yes. new stuff to watch while working :D thanky you very much
Haha based on comments, I think I need to make longer videos lol
@@retroshowcase yeah at least one hour long ;D
Glad you enjoyed :)
I had a Soundblaster Live 16 which was pretty good, at least compared to the default Microsoft GS wavetable synth
oh I saw this on the ff7 sub-reddit the other day! so sick!!
Oh cool! Yah pretty nice eh!
Good god, that Yamaha MIDI sounds AMAZING... I've never heard the sounds so detailed.
Some people love it! Some hate it! Haha I think once set up correctly it sounds really nice!
The version of Yamaha S-YXG50 SoftSynth this port came with was specially customized with sound fonts designed to mimic the original synth the PS1 version used. It never sounded quite right, but it was so much worse with a Creative sound bank.
I don't mind it TBH :)
I dont think it kept anyone from buying and enjoying it if they didnt have a PS1. I never had a PS1, for example. I wasn't impressed with the graphics at the time, but would play at friends' houses without complaint.
As much as I love Remake and Rebirth, you’ve gotta always go back to the original
They are all amazing :)
Why not invest on a Yamaha MU80 (or MU2000) XG Tone Generator for the ultimate way to experience these? Some viewers may appreciate it. Great video.
Let me know if you have one to send me!
Damn the monitor has immaculate calibration
Cheers! It looks great eh!
Ahh this game on PC so good!
Literally the best!
The old FF7 version that had 3dfx support was the best version i think (graphically)
I haven't played much of the steam one, but i'll check it out one day and get back into it. I've been playing through ff4 ds remake and just recently started to target the "tails". Just got the adamant armor
I was surprised by how good it looks at 640x480
I think at that time, 1024*768 was standard, but it was polished. Some monitors were able to get up to 1200* something.
@ The game itself supports up to 640x480 :)
I still have the PC discs. I play this game off of Steam now, though. I still like the gameplay better than the remake.
Both are super fun! But I'll always go to the original!
I remember playing the demo cd that came with Tobal No1, as well as every other version of the game. Ffvi is just as epic.
Loved me some demo discs!
My PC must have sucked in '98. Cloud was always wobbly as hell when he was composited over a pre-rendered mov.
Not many people had great PCs at the time!
Pure Nostalgia
Only the purest!
