I’m 70 now but back in the early 60s my brothers took up surfing, we had just moved to Tustin, fifteen miles from Newport, I was too young to get on 10 ft. surfboards back then . I was just in grade school. But…. they had surf mats! But they were small rafts just like the surf mats today. It was the same size and shape covered in a green rubberized canvas with a white rope across the top to hold onto and pull it as you waded to deeper water. When you caught a wave it took off, bouncing across the water. On larger steep waves the water would push the raft from under you. Sometimes you’d get the rope wrapped around your neck or legs. All in all you pretty much could ride any wave you stayed on until the wave broke down or you got off at the end. Not like surfboards at all , better than boogie boards in many ways. You just can’t duck under a wave to let it go by. Many’s the days I spent tagging along with my mean greenie with my brothers to Newport, Huntington, down to Corona del Mar, Little Corona, Laguna Beach on down to Doheny , San Onofre, Trestles and farther south to Oceanside, and Swamis. Our dad was a USMC Captain so we could surf at San Onofre but the MPs were always trying to confiscate my brother’s boards. My brother got to know Dewey Weber, Hobie Alter and Frederick J. Wardy who speciallized in lower skags for San Onofre. Growing up in the 60s along the coast in Southern California was the best place ever.
And Heaven forbid, they got a hole in them. You could patch it but, it was the kiss of death eventually. As a kid it was heartbreaking. Took a lot of paper route money to get a new one. I still have one made by Paul Gross of Fourth Gear Flyers. Don't think they are made by anyone any more.
thanks for capturing Harald ! Barba surfmat riding an unbroken wave for so long is foil territory i knew that was not a boogie when i saw the ride on surfline cam .legendary
why do mats perform different to boogs. I would have thought boogs would be faster. only thing is I assume a big pumped up mat is completely above the wave and a boog is only really fast when on its rail.
@@danb8877 Mats are flexible when they bounce and have chop come into them they flex and absorb the shock w/o losing speed. they ride higher and do not sink down into the water like a boogie. the mat can conform its rocker to match the wave and extract alot of energy similar to a foil . they fall down the hill when its less steep and go faster over all
We used to make our own way back in ancient times. A gunny sack stuffed with an inner tube from a truck tire, caught my first waves with those before moving up to a waterlogged balsa board that was so heavy I had to drag it from the parking lot to the water. Those gunny sacks were rough on your skin, but we were stoked, so nobody cared. That was one fine ride for your modern day mat guy there.
Yarb-O!!! SurfMat-O!!! 🌊 I remember helping him write his first sponsorship request resume for BZ back in the day, but I see the SurfMat is the way to go now. Hey #chadbarba, lemme borrow your mat!! 😎
Pavones ?, Chicama ? (Hailed as the longest surfing wave on Earth, Chicama provides a left-hander that peels for up to 2.5 miles) Clearly the title is a stretch
Surf mats. They are or were inflatable canvas material. some with small fins some without. They seemed to fade out but were a huge amount of fun and easily inflated or deflated and folded up to almost nothing. Great for a bike rider.

That’s my pops. I promise you that’s definitely a bodyboard lol.
ive never seen anyone ride a non breaking wave for a minute and a half. Its both the most boring and most suspenseful thing all at the same time
Not boring for him.
“Is it motorized?” Hilarious
Awesome ride bruh! Thanks for sharing!
That was epic ! Makes me want a surf matt … 1min 41sec ride is insane
Wow!!!! That was definitely Radical!!!!! Thanks for sharing and posting!!!!

That was truly epic. How he transcended that fat middle area was remarkable. As for length maybe 1/5 of a long one at Chicama.
Thanks brother 🤙

Classic Chad, awesome man!
One of the world’s longest UNBROKEN waves. Well, it finally broke at the end. Impressive ride staying on for so long.
Didn’t know mats were still a thing!! That was my generation’s mode circa 1960 at Huntington and Seal😊. So fun to see.
"Yes, one trip back to the beach please sir. Thank you."
Just kept thinking - what a brutal paddle back out.
You should be ripping the shory.😂 Nice one
Barba: Give me a break!
Wave: Nope. See ya at the beach!
Is is motorised. Has to be. Sighting of Barba the Legend
Surf mat...flying carpet...is there a difference?
Barba tried to bark me outta the water once on southside. I laughed and moved over to the next peak. Nice burger, Chad
I used to love boogie boarding in Seal Beach
DA BESTTT SURRFERRRRRR

I think there's Skeleton Bay footage of waves this long, and they break, lol!
Should of pulled in
I’d love to surf these waves on my 11’8” glider 🏄🏼♂️
Epic
Looked like a ton of fun. So he wasn’t on a boogie board?
Surf mat forsure
