'Black Bart' was certainly a gentleman. The 'Wells Fargo Affair' was a matter of honor for the man who was strong-armed out of his future wealth. Wonder what his 'mine claim' ended up being worth vs his takings on the road.
A somewhat similar, if much less successful, 'Gentleman Robber' was William Allen 'Bill' Miner. maybe truly the 'Last of the Old Time Bandits' - a 46 year-long career in robbing & prison work with little rest in between. His story been told often, if not always well. Hope you track him down and bring him back for us . . . he just about the only Robber we Canadians have to boast about and even he had to be imported
I love the podcast! Just wanted to add that Black Bart actually lived outside of Decatur, Il in a little farming community called Warrensburg. I live outside of Warrensburg myself. A local entrepreneur-type has opened a Pumpkin Patch named in his honor near his family's old farm.
I recently sat on a flight next to the great grandson of Samuel Brannan, the California newspaper pioneer who first advertised the "Gold Rush". The grandson is a tennis instructor who resides in Dallas. California is currently cutting off water supply to ranchers/farmers, claiming "drought". Imagine that.
He went back to prison. Where he died in San Quentin. He was buried on the hill above the old jute mill that the female prisoners worked at. I was a prisoner myself in San Quentin. I made it to the ranch. Was given a job on the caltrans crew. When they were going to have an execution, they had us weed eat and clean up the prison. We weed ate on the hill and there was many brick markers where they buried the prisoners who were either executed or died while serving time. We were instructed about some of the prisoners that died and were buried there. And he was one that they told us about
