    That looks awesome! I know I don't speak for everyone when I say this, but I'm more of a fan of this look than the way all the black light paint people use in haunts, now. Just looks more realistic or something, idk. To each his own, I guess. This looks the way I like it. Nice job!

    Nice job, Derek. I purchased one of these a number of years ago and the patina it came with wasn’t nearly as garish (or as poorly applied) as the one that this started with. I hate to say it but it looks like a first day patina intern did the finish on your friend’s piece, UV reactive awesomeness notwithstanding. I’m sure your friend is thrilled with the more understated and expert finish you applied; who wouldn’t be?!?! If your friend still wanted the UV effect, clear UV reactive dyes could have been applied via airbrush so the piece has the best of BOTH worlds: authentic daylight weathering and spooky UV glow at night.

    Buckethead studios has a video on doing aged copper and they actually paint the copper color first, then wash the oxidized patina over the top, then highlight. I think I'll try a mix of both techniques with my HM plaque and see which I like more. I do enjoy a heavier hit of oxidization, but it's all about lightly doing it until you hit that specific definition you're looking for.
    Thanks for the tutorial!!

    Great video. I’m perplexed about clear coat/sealer in the middle of a paint project. I thought that would make future paint layers harder to adhere?

    • @VanOaksProps
      @VanOaksProps  3 года назад +1

      Not at all. Sealers can be used at any point during the painting process as a way to protect the finish before applying additional layers.

    Awesome job Derek, looks absolutely beautiful! Hey just curious, does your spray on clear coat kill or dull the luster of the metallic paint at all? Seems like most of the time I spray a clear coat over acrylic metallics it can really dull them down? Thanks again for sharing buddy! 😍🎃👍

    • @VanOaksProps
      @VanOaksProps  3 года назад +2

      Thanks! Because it's a satin clear it's not too bad, but I also have the benefit of the piece needing to look old. So the high reflectivity of the metal isn't desirable in this application and the dulling from the clear works in my favor.
