This feels like a win-win. I'm a Raptors fan and the Knicks fans - I get the pain of losing Quickley - I love his game and the Raptors have a guy who can play with Barnes & really thrive. But O.G. will fit like a glove under Thibs. I love his game too and considering his agent, you're going to have a great guy long-term who makes you a better contender & you still have pieces to deal with picks and Fournier's contract (Also, Precious will work well as a depth piece) For the Raptors - they aren't going anywhere - it's time to deal Siakam as well, take the capital that comes with that and you start rebuilding. Barnes is a legit emerging perennial all-star - Quickley with him is going to be a wild combination. I love trades like this where both teams get something good that can turn into great.
As a Knicks fan, I will always want to see IQ thrive. Him and Barnes are gonna be great together. I hope Raps include Shroeder in a deal with Siakam. RJ will hopefully know his role on the team and improves.
The Knicks should look at Brogdon. He can score, play both guard positions, he's efficient. Would be a great backup to Brunson who can play alongside him at times. And very available.
Several things to consider that other commenters haven't stressed: 1) It is widely reported that before the trade, OG told his agent (who is the SON of Knicks president Leon Rose) that he would take a paycut to stay in NY. 2) Additionally, several of you have mentioned that OG is 'just' a catch-and-shoot Three'n Dee- type player. That is EXACTLY the type of player that NY needs right now to surround around Brunson and Randle. He might not be the ideal third-star player, but he is arguably the best remaining Wing player who doesn't need the ball in his hands, currently on the trade market. 3) Quickley, despite being a restricted free agent, will be commanding lots of bucks this summer. So how many of you Raptor fans are actually willing to pay $25m - $30m/per for 5 years, for someone who hasn't even proven himself as a starting lead guard? 4) RJ Barrett is being paid $26m, $28m, and $30m for the next 3 years. 5) I would NOT consider grading an A- for the Knicks, because you have to consider whether the Knicks still have the assets to trade for a third 'Superstar' player -- which OG is not. Quickley had the most talent to use as instant trade bait, and RJ's salary would've been useful to bridge any payroll discrepancies in a trade for a Superstar type player. Now it will be extremely difficult to find a team willing to trade away their superstar for just Grimes/Fournier + First-Round picks.
@Nono0618 a) Arguments are based on the assumption that Knicks will be building the team around Brunson first option, and Randle second option. As such, Quickley does not fit into long-term plans because he takes shots away from Brunson, and will be a bystander when Brunson shoots. Therefore, can't afford to spend $30m on a backup lead guard -- no matter how good he might be. b) By trading for OG, Knicks retain his Bird Rights. Knicks can spend the entire summer trying to sign free agents and get right under the cap. THEN they can sign OG for $30m, and go way over the cap. Quickley, however, is RFA. Teams can offer a poison pill contract as soon as the summer starts, and force the Knicks to sign him, fuck over their cap space, before they can sign other free agents. c) There are at least 8-10 guards who can perform up to 80-90% of what Quickley does, but can be had for only $15-20m per, or at least traded for a few picks. OG is arguably the best Three'n Dee Wing player available for trade or free agency this summer. The Knicks needs at least one of them, along with a third 'superstar' player, to surround Brunson and Randle. OG might be less talented, but his skills fit better with what Brunson and Randle lacks.
I don't buy Quickley demanding a fat enough contract beyond his perceived market value. Small combo guards are always about in the draft with the limitation of their value hinging on shooting/playmaking and not being a defensive liability. Along with a teams roster make up that hides their clear weaknesses in size. Of the 7 teams projected to have big cap space openings for the 2024 FA, none are a major great fit for IQ to have playmakers around him and bodies to keep him away on defense. I'm really not scared of his RFA situation which could be similar for Ayton years back where the Suns let him test his market value. The Pacers gave him an offer sheet MUCH lower than what he valued himself and the Suns happily matched. In the end if IQ wants to help inflate his value and skills in the coming years, Raps are a good place to start and the template he should follow is a former Raps player who bet on himself at the right time and got a fat short term contract from the Rockets in Fred VanVleet.
Three left handers for the Knicks weren’t going to work, being a raptor fan this is the best trade in a long time, watch RJ flourish with the raptors, Quickley going to be a monster for us 😊
Excellent take on the trade. As a knicks fan my go to is kftv but because of og I've had a chance tolisten to podcasts I didn't know existed and most were disappointing. Great take.
RJ is soft as a tissue! He is a good guy though. Glad to have OG in Knicks uniform. I will miss Quickley but it open more playing time for Grimes, Hart & DiVincenzo.
How is he soft… He played almost every game in 4 seasons🤦🏼♂️ Got to the line heaps. Trusted defender for Thibs. But you and your feminine profile picture isnt soft?🤣 Look in the damn mirror. You are probably like 5’4. RJ would body you

@@IVoldiIAh, thanks. I used to listen to that hoping to find at least one of the days that was worth it, but unsubscribed. I remember not liking Wos, Logan, or Raja.
Im so happy the Raptors finally decided to blow it up so to speak, just wish Masai would have done this 2 years ago, but still a good sign as a Raps fan, we got our prospect (Scottie) and RJ ( home grown ). Now all they need to do is UNLOCK Scottie, and bulid, and we can have a squad by 2026-27. Move in the right way, lets go!!!!!!! as a Raps fan!!!
Based solely on this trade I'm giving Masai a pass. Scottie was a curveball, the team was trending towards handing off the post-Lowry era to FVV and Skills. Then Scottie happened. Nurse tried to force the FVV thing. But with this trade things this season are making sense.. Darko giving minutes to the rotation to see what sticks, Flynn is important to this trade happening. McDaniels is getting his minutes boosted lately, he may be tossed into a Skills trade. I'm just happy to know the front office has had somewhat of a plan.
Tyus Jones would be the perfect back up point guard for this year, he is also on an expiring contact which is a huge positive when comparing to a guy like Clarkson or to a lesser degree TJ.
As a warriors fan, at this point with the way Kuminga and Wiggins have looked I would totally be down for a Wiggins for Siakam trade. I feel like Wiggins needs a change of scenery, and the raptors fans would probably LOVE having a native Canadian on the team. And the warriors would move off Wiggins contract which would probably help us be able to extend Kuminga and re-sign Pascal
@@isaactaylor6236 agreed. I mean, we've lead the league in games that have gone down to the clutch. We've played a very difficult schedule, and we haven't exactly been whole most of the year. So I think we're gonna switch things up. Cause imo, we wouldn't let the idea of Wiggins being available get out for no reason.
@@isaactaylor6236 I think Klay is necessary just because of how reliable he's been in the playoffs for the overwhelming majority of his career. like, we all know who game 6 Klay is for a reason. He can be a quality spot up shooter with insane, cataclysm-level upside if he gets hot.
its the same problem with OG, he's probably not worth 40m, and likely a 4th or 5th option on a contender... but unlike quickley he's a known commodity since he's been the 3rd option for years
Like the theory that looking for distressed assets might be beating the market, not stacking picks Thunder style. Don't necessarily agree but it's interesting, there's so much talent in the league these days there's more guys who could POP if given the opportunity
It's a nifty little theory but how many "distressed assets" have actually panned out in the past 10 years? By that let's set the definition to a player drafted in the top 10, then the team that drafted them gave up on them inside the first 4 years, before their first RFA contract.
@@75aces97 I think the Knicks won the trade, don't get me wrong. One early second rounder and two "distressed assets" for OG? Big win. Do think that you'd have to widen that definition though to, say, top 20 picks.
@@leonardschneider2797 I suppose I bring it up since the Knicks are one of the best examples of a franchise that tried the reclamation project route during the doldrum years. They tried cobbling starting lineups out of Brandon Jennings, Trey Burke, Mario Hezonja, Emanuel Mudiay, Noah Vonleh, Elfrid Payton, Julius Randle, and Dennis Smith. They cost almost nothing and were worth almost that much. More recently Detroit has tried this experiment on Smith (that guy again?😫), Knox, Wiseman, and so far it’s worked out as well as you’d expect. I don’t consider this trade an example of distressed assets. OG Anybody is a pretty good player that several teams wanted, so NYK had to give up something of value for him.
Can Bill admit he was wrong about Gobert trade? It was great. It propelled Minnesota to the best team in the league. They traded a few non-starter guys who no one wants. And the 4 picks will be end of first round and of middling value because the Wolves will be top of the league thanks to Gobert. Amazing trade.
Bill taking a victory lap on the thunder is hilarious. Everyone had them as a top 4 seed. I’ve been saying since the summer they’d win 52 games. I don’t think it’s a surprise they’re this good
I don’t understand this deal for Toronto. They are saying with this trade that they think they can win. This takes them from like the 10th seed to the 8th seed. No way you can trade Siakam for just picks now.
curious what knicks fan would have thought of adding poeltl and robinson into this trade and removing the detroit pick, so OG and poeltl for guigley, robinson and RJ?
3 late 1sts or a potential young star in IQ, a good young player under contract in RJ, and pretty much a late 1st round pick. As a Raps fan id much rather this package we got
Precious is an enigma. Looks great one game and barely an nba player next 3. OG good player but energy draining with guys like Barnes on the court. Time has come for a change. Toronto is way more up tempo with Quickly and Barnes. RJ will be better than in NY. He’s excited to be back home and the development team will work with him.
It is actually quite easy to predict RJ's future. He comfortably has been the worst shooting full-time starter in the NBA since he's been in the league. And, no, this is not disappointing. OG is a huge upgrade over RJ.
Without looking at salaries, a deal centered on Wiggins-Siakim makes sense. Lets the old-guard in GS possibly go out together, gets a another playable Canadian in Toronto.
Absolutely and all the frustration from knicks fans about RJ is exactly the same raps felt about og on the offensive end. Can defend but can't take 2 dribbles without putting it off his foot
Recency bias is insane, nothing we've seen over the past 4yrs matters cuz Colby White balled out from October-December 31 2023. It's pointless to discuss Colby White vs RJ Barrett; White was just a free agent..the other 29 teams all said nope pass. The RJ disrespect is out here in a major way
I thought Cavs were gonna be involved, actually relieved, room for Luke Travers to be our 2way point forward 3&D wing connector type of superglue star role player. Lol, hopefully by next season he’s called up from NBL. So, for no reason but this, Luke Travers and the Cavs kinda win. I figured Mitchell would’ve gotten RJ to Toronto and OG to us. Cavs should reinvest in the youth movement, let Mitchell stay or walk, let the vibes ride.
If you were to make a draft of the Top 3 picks from the last 7 drafts, most NBA fans wouldn't take RJ in the top 15. Looking at RJ, it's easy to see that he hit his ceiling at Duke. I liked RJ as a Knick, but let's be honest, the number 3 pick is supposed to be a cornerstone. If it wasn't for free agent signings (Brunson, Randle, and Donte), this franchise would be constantly in the lottery with RJ.
@@trustoryj6476 he’s under contract for next year too. Literally 0 reason to trade him for a garbage New York package. They can enjoy Dejounte Murray’s services for that
There is no need to package all your picks anymore. This new NBA has proved it is not worth it. This trade was perfect for the Knicks. Love the conversation and i think Precious Achuwa definitely makes sense.
The Knicks will now have to pay a defensive stopper a max or close to max contract. OG will not extend, opt out, and become a UFA at the end of the season. The Knicks have no leverage. They'll have to give OG a massive contract. OG is a good player, but his next contract is the problem.
He's CAA so I presumed they would have basically agreed a number that the Knicks and OG is happy with before committing. Be interesting to see what this is too.
I don't think Jarrett Allen to OKC makes sense. Chet is awesome at the five. If a team needs a Jarrett Allen it is the Spurs. The recent games show a low post defender is a higher priority for them that a point guard.
Agree w/ Bill the Knicks couldn't pay Quickly so traded him now, agree w/ Rob that Quickly getting a bigger role is a great thing & i agree w/ Justin that Quickly is absolutely a microwave player like Jamal & Lou-Will. But Mahoney said it, Quickly is young enough to have a shot at becoming more than that. Don't kno why RJ gets the blame for not being a great shooter when no one on the Knicks can shoot except Brunson? RJ is still getting better as a non-Knicks fan w/ zero east coast bias RJ isn't the all-star people labeled him as but he's far better than the media portrays him to be. You guys talk like at age 22 dropping 19-4-3 isn't impressive or as if he gets w/ an offensive coach he won't improve, lets put a bit more respect on Barrett's name
You guys are not understanding that RJ’s lil 19 points are heavily forced, he’ll take 22 shots just to make 7 of those and hardly dishes out the rock and is not that much of a good defender. His plus/minus numbers are terrible as well. Don’t let his 19ppg fool you

As a Knicks fan, I will always want to see IQ thrive. Him and Barnes are gonna be great together. I hope Raps include Shroeder in a deal with Siakam. RJ will hopefully know his role on the team and improves.
Great take! Solid trade for both teams!

Its a def win for Toronto. Not sure OG would stay in Toronto. Now they got 2 very good players and a pick?
Did Kyle mess up and upload the entire pod on vid instead of audio?
Several things to consider that other commenters haven't stressed:
1) It is widely reported that before the trade, OG told his agent (who is the SON of Knicks president Leon Rose) that he would take a paycut to stay in NY.
@Nono0618
a) Arguments are based on the assumption that Knicks will be building the team around Brunson first option, and Randle second option.
Just happy that he didn’t get traded to a team that I hate haha. He’ll be a really good fit with the Knicks.

Facts.... Scotties ceiling is healthy grant hill and his floor is Shawn marion. He's my favorite young player
Better late than never
Based solely on this trade I'm giving Masai a pass.
@@ComboBreakerHDStop running to trade Pascal. You all don't realize that Pascal is important to Scottie's growth on & off the court.

Bill is right about OKC. The Thunder have all the flexibility to get another big that can back Chet up and possibly play with him.
What about Markkenen? Did he get traded and I missed it? They even brought up Utah and didn't mention him.
Those three first round picks they were offered for OG were going to be in the 20s. They weren’t unprotected or picks from lottery teams.
Who's the serial killer on the right
its the same problem with OG, he's probably not worth 40m, and likely a 4th or 5th option on a contender... but unlike quickley he's a known commodity since he's been the 3rd option for years
Like the theory that looking for distressed assets might be beating the market, not stacking picks Thunder style.
Canada = Breathing sighs of relief. Thank God he's not on the IR for half another year. Welcome home RJ!
Was thinking same about Thibs and Precious. Prolly thinking hes got his Taj Gibson 2.0
Can Bill admit he was wrong about Gobert trade? It was great. It propelled Minnesota to the best team in the league. They traded a few non-starter guys who no one wants. And the 4 picks will be end of first round and of middling value because the Wolves will be top of the league thanks to Gobert. Amazing trade.
by the Numbers, OG is similar to IQ on offense... only Bigger, more physical and defensively more versatile... the Quickly Motor in a Larger frame.

Bill taking a victory lap on the thunder is hilarious. Everyone had them as a top 4 seed. I’ve been saying since the summer they’d win 52 games. I don’t think it’s a surprise they’re this good
NOBODY had them top 4, flat out lie.
BILL IS COOKING, I forgot Mitchell was looking to leave the Cavs and he would for sure resign with the knicks

Raptors threw a mercy game to Pistons by making the trade at the time they played them. They should send them a care package.
Barrett has been banged up a bit, but has played great for the Raptors.
It is actually quite easy to predict RJ's future. He comfortably has been the worst shooting full-time starter in the NBA since he's been in the league.
And, no, this is not disappointing. OG is a huge upgrade over RJ.
As a LOONG suffering Knicks fan gonna really miss Quickly think he has the potential to be really good.

Lol, hopefully by next season he’s called up from NBL. So, for no reason but this, Luke Travers and the Cavs kinda win. I figured Mitchell would’ve gotten RJ to Toronto and OG to us.

OG told prospective agents that he’d take less to sign with the Knicks and his agent is the Knicks president’s son. They’re gonna get a bargain.
