- Here's the next episode of Chordplay with The Chords of Funkadelic.
Funkadelic was a legendary and often-misunderstood funk group that was formed in Detroit, Michigan in 1968 and dominated the funk scene throughout the 1970s.
Aside from the fact that the group Parliament featured a lot of the same members as Funkadelic and both groups were fronted by George Clinton led to the confusion and mystery surrounding this interesting and unusual musical group, which featured the famous funk-mater Eddie Hazel, not to mention other six-string players that worked with the group - including Garry Shider and Michael Hampton.
This lesson takes a look at some classic and highly-influential music from Funkadelic and was pulled from a random assortment of albums and releases, including Free Your Mind And Your Ass Will Follow, Maggot Brain, Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On, Let's Take It To The Stage, and more.

I heard Maggot brain for the first time on acid and since then my life has changed, Eddie Hazel should get more praise.

Probably where Prince got the idea for his title song DOES NOT COMPUTE (name not music).
That guitar part is actually by Garry Shider (not Eddie) and is a classic gospel quartet style chord progression.

Obviously the studio version of Maggot brain is untouchable, but the Houston 1978 version by Michael Hampton is up in the stratosphere of channeling emotions via guitar.

@@georgemoore5414 I agree. But I am nailing my colours to the mast here - they are the best band ever. My logic is that if you put P-Funk in their pomp at one end of a field and any other band at the other, eventually everyone would be at the P -Funk end. Including the other band. :-)

Great video but I’m 66 yrs old .. saw them play several times in columbus ohio at the ball of confusion club .. vets memorial …. And the agora on ohio state campus . I play guitar .. and it was sly and funkadelic and mothers finest .. etc etc … but you make it sound like we use to do as teens trying to figure out the chords appreciate

Super inspiring lesson! I became aware of P-funk via Buckethead. Years before that my friend had a dog named Bootzilla, which I didn't understand at the time. Thank you for showing all the great riffs! I hope I can try to incorporate some of it.
Great tutorial! A lot of the songs u showed are personal favorites of me too. There is sooo much in this music to discover and enjoy. Not only guitars, but keyboards, drums, bass, crazy lyrics, hiphop samples you name it! As a guitarist Maggott brain is a must know. But I also really like the parliament style, and like u said it's hard to tell the difference over time.

You really make your knowledge of the Guitar and your music history seem so easy to understand!! I've always loved and appreciated the Guitar but my newfound total admiration has really hit me hard at this time in my life. I come from a long line of musicians, especially stringed instruments from my fathers side but unfortunately I didn't grow up around or have the chance to be influenced by him. My love for music goes back to childhood and I have to say I truly love it more than ever. MUSIC IS MY THERAPY 💜🎸💜🎵💜Long story short, my goal is to at least learn the basics of playing the guitar by the end of the year. I love this particular music style, along with pure amazement at my favorite of all time artist since I was 13, PRINCE. I can't begin to say enough about that man!!! Pure genius of music and instruments. And my 2nd favorite is STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN 💜. I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE YOU FOR MY TEACHER!!!!! I love your calmness and your knowledge definitely shows!!!

I believe that song is Friday Night, August 14th and what a bad bad song that is! Liking you more and more each day man keep it up! Eddie Hazel is definitely one of my main influences, much appreciated that somebody is giving him the attention he deserves. His only solo record Game, Dames, and Guitar Thangs are essential listening as well. Peace!

Funkadelic featured the guitars. Parliament featured the horns. Same players even for the solo projects. George had them all on different labels. Prince, Peppers etc were fans of P Funk.

I saw Faster Pussycat live twice in 1990. They did this little jam where they said shit godamb get off your ass and jam. I never forgot that and it took like til 2006 for me to learn Faster PS, got that from Parliament. They were also on Casablanca records, because in my Kiss Alive record's inner sleeve Parliament's record was being adv ertised.

The difference between Funkadelic and Parliament was Funkadelic is the rock side and Parliament since they started as a singing group the Soul & R&B side, that's why they got brass on that side, it's the same thing Prince done with The Time cause he got this concept from George, also the group originated in New Jersey and not Detroit
Also another note is, Eddie came back in the band while Mike Hampton was in the band because they got Mike while Eddie was in jail, I believe "Electric Spanking of War Babies" is the last one he recorded with Funkadelic but he's on P-Funk All Stars & George's albums too

That's the way George Clinton made /intended Funkadelic 2 be, it's silly and it's serious at the same time, if you pay close attention some of the album titles & track songs, there's meaning in the metaphors! for example; Cosmic Slop song about a young female doing the Jezebel to take care of her kids, all while praying to God to forgive her in the middle of her sinful endeavors, and then there's Maggot Brain! It's a state of mind... then....the condition & position of your ass!! free your mind and your ass will follow.... in Parliament/Funkadelic you're getting a heavy dose of reality in a silly yet serious format, which takes the edge off daily life! u know like when you work hard everyday...its the agony of defeet! U dig!😀✌👍👍

Five seconds told me the grove was right on point.
I wish someone would make a channel like this for keys, especially within a lot of the styles you cover. Stuff like Funkadelic, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Sly and the Family Stone, Rainbow, The Black Crowes, Steely Dan. If anyone knows of one please tell me.
