@@JCsBees but you're telling everyone to get these and give them out to neighbors and feed their bees you should have been more clear about the potenatials and how that rruins honey.
Sadly this is concern before these feeders came into the picture. Have you not ever seen bees work humming bird feeders? Or heard of large companies dumping syrup and the bees collecting it? A few years ago M&M candies dumbed hundreds of gallons of green dye. Beekeepers in the area started noticing green nectar in the cells. SO yeah, I understand your concern but that was already an issue.

I like the idea of the pollen feeder. I've used pollen patties but you have to disturb the hive to get them in. Of course I'd take them down in September to avoid stimulating to much brood late in the year. I don't want a big box of bees to eat all the stores by January. MN has a long winter for bees to live on stores only.
I live in Va . My bees are hitting the big pollen substitute feeder hard . I just set up two plastic tubs with a total of ten gallons of heavy sugar syrup with honey bee healthy. I use straw inside to keep them from drowning. I have eleven standard ten frame double deep hives and four double five nucleus colonies. I’m treating for varoa mites now and will continue until December 13th 2020 . I lost a strong nucleus colony near a golf course from possible pesticide use . It was super strong with the top box almost completely full of honey and great bee coverage . Three weeks later all the bees were dead except about a hundred. There were dang near three thousand maggots in the bottom and the honey was slimed . I placed those ten frames inside four heavy duty garden bags and placed them inside a plastic tote so my bees at the house can’t get in to it . Good morning Jason. LOVE your videos!! I'm going into my second year of bee keeping up in Vermont. Learning a ton from you! Thank you. I bought the mann lake substitute and cant get my bees to take it. Tried every trick in the book and multiple ideas off RUclips. Going to buy the flower pot thing and try it out in spring. Keep these videos going please!!
Morning Bill, Glad you enjoy the videos. Try this trick, I put 1 drop of honey bee healthy on the outside of pollen feeder and see if that draws in the bees? It's worked well for me. Also keep in mind bees have no desire to go after pollen sub if real pollen is still available.
Maybe I've just been lucky this year, we only have one YJ nest around that I have seen. The honeybees haven't had any issues keeping them under control.
Do these have any use in Florida if we never experience a freeze? I have left feeders out and the bees never find them. I have also put a pollen substitute under the top cover and they don’t touch it so I guess it’s not needed.
@Guy Fisher I may offer some pollen sub outside the hives but I will not be offering anything inside colonies just yet. I like to wait until nature provides pollen first. Basically I wait for the Maple trees to bloom. I will be glad to see this snow melt though.
Does this increase fighting? Whenever I put out frames or equipment for bees to clean I end up with tons of dead bees. Not to mention yellow jackets & other pests.
I haven't seen any fighting all summer at the feeders. The fight can be an issue at the hives though if there is a dearth and you don't have some form of robbing screen on. I have seen maybe 3-4 yellow jackets at feeder but the bees had no problem escorting them away. lol
I ordered one of these a couple of weeks ago! For three days I was sure I had wasted my money ! I put the feeder out at sundown on Tuesday. Nothing Wednesday, nothing Thursday and I was sad 😢 until about 3:00 PM on Friday and 2 scout bees showed up. Saturday mourning about 15 bees showed up and we’re feeding vigorously. By lunch the feeder was packed. By 2:00 PM the feeder was empty! I refilled Saturday night and by 12:00 PM lunch the feeder was empty again. Anytime I fill the feeder now , it never takes over 4 hours to empty it!!!!
I believe the website is under constructions, that's why I listed their email. Please take a minute and email them. Hopefully website won't be down long.
Hi Jason. I’m new to beekeeping so I’m interested in your thoughts/advice. It seems as though these products would be considered “open feeding”which is illegal in some states as it can spread diseases among colonies. Is open-feeding legal in Ohio? I love the idea of providing nourishment to the bees but I just don’t want to do anything that will accidentally hurt my colony. Thank you in advance for your thoughts.
Not sure I like the idea of non-beekeepers feeding the bees. Especially during a good flow us beekeepers would end up having funny honey if someone was feeding close by. Just my opinion tho. Thanks for sharing Jason.
I understand your concerns completely, I do however think with some instruction everyone could understand when and when not to feed. Maybe it means a closer relationship with neighbors/customers who decide to try feeding. Besides it's not like people take down hummingbird feeders when there is a flow and I have seen bees visiting them many times in pictures. I need to discuss this point with the creator so they are aware of this concern. Thanks for being honest!
I think people won't follow instructions. I don't think we need the general public feeding bees. What we need is everyone filling spaces that need beautifying and spaces that are unused to be filled with bee friendly flowers. Use your money for seeds and spread the joy.
@jason chrisman, My biggest problem during the last two years, and especially last Summer (2020) , has been robbing. At one yard, with seven hives, using entrance feeders in the Summer seemed to get the robbing going. Have you seen any correlation between open feeding and robbing? After I had put away all feeders, I got the same warm November weather as you, a little north of toledo, OH. That seemed to ignite some late season robbing as well!!
@Jason Emery I would suggest you not use entrance feeders, they do cause robbing. Do you add essential oils to your syrup? If so, that could be the reason your having all the robbing. Oils add a lot of traveling smells, I compare it to a steakhouse, ever noticed how you can smell the food before you even enter? As for robbing with open feeding, there has been very very little. I do add essential oils to open feeders as that's where I want to bees to go for food but once the syrup is carried back to the hives for some reason they do not pester each others colonies.
I don't see bees being attracted to the feeders when there is a strong flow. I tried this summer and they had no interest. The issue would be when a dearth starts and the beekeeper doesn't pull their honey before they start working feeders.
Yup going to invest in these got a list of about 5 feeders I need to do for birds and carpenter bees as well as pollen feeders lol and what are you competing with me on beard length lol you shall not win in this war my friend (lol I know winter growth :P )

I don't want to rain on your video but... The problem with EVERYONE feeding the bees is that it can contaminate real honey which is not what a beekeeper wants. Fall feeding might not matter as much unless the beekeepers are looking for fall honey. No one selling honey wants their HONEY to contain sugar syrup. There are issues too with feeding Ultra Bee year round - it stimulates brood rearing. You do not want too much brood rearing going into winter - the bees have to feed all that new larva and keep it warm and that depletes their food stores for their winter survival if the brood nest is too large.
@Nancy Nolton Many moons ago it was raining on someone's head and they came up with an object we now know as the umbrella. That said, I think with some informative instructions this could work. Have you ever seen bees around a hummingbird feeder? Usually it's only when there is a dearth and those feeders are usually up all spring and summer. I used this syrup feeder all summer and the bees would only visit when there was no flow. Maybe it would take an instructional video for consumers to understand when to feed but to say it won't work is to give up and I don't do that very easily. I do plan to discuss this issue with the creator and I appreciate your honestly.
@@JCsBees I never said it wouldn't work lets be clear on that. My concern was that the Joe Public feeding could and would affect the desired honey and winter brood nest.
