  • Welcome to our first-time watching as we react to 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016).
    We were not ready for what the suspenseful world of "10 Cloverfield Lane" had in store for us. What an exhilarating experience it was to slowly uncover the twists, turns and insane surprises this sci-fi mystery had to offer.
    Directed by Dan Trachtenberg and produced by J.J. Abrams, "10 Cloverfield Lane" (2016) follows the story of a young woman (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead) who finds herself trapped in an underground bunker with two strangers (John Goodman and John Gallagher Jr.) unsure of whether to trust her captor's claims of a deadly chemical attack outside. This film was able to capture that horrific feeling of claustrophobia while giving us some incredible tension through the character dynamics.
    We hope that you enjoy our reactions, commentary and discussions as we discuss the special place this has in the sci-fi genre, what the connection with the Cloverfield universe could be and how the nail-biting sequences lead to an unforgettable experience.

      There was an episode of Rosanne way back when that turned my opinion of Goodman. Up until that point he had simply been a great comedy actor, and even when he did things like go (offscreen) beat up Jackie's boyfriend, he was still just this loveable teddy bear. Anyway, one episode he got so mad at David that he picked him up and held him against the wall like he was ready to just kill him, and all of a sudden on the flip of a dime he was absolutely terrifying even if just for a couple seconds.

    The main thing this movie has in common with Cloverfield is that it’s a sci-fi disaster movie told from an unusual perspective. Here it’s an alien invasion told from the perspective of someone trapped in a psychological/slasher thriller. The Michelle before the crash wouldn’t have been ready, but the Michelle who defeated Howard and escaped the bunker was equipped with the confidence and ingenuity to take down an alien extermination craft solo and go help the other survivors.

    This movie was so cleverly executed. Even at the very end you still don't know 100% what Howards actual intentions were. Even if he did kidnap and hurt someone in the past...did he plan to do that again? Was he actually just being a good Samaritan this time? Did he kill the other survivor because he was a bad man or was it a legit "this guy is bad, and we can't let him stay with us." because really...he told him he was going to make a weapon to steal a gun. That's a legitimate threat especially when you're someone who up until now acted nice. If it was true that would say he was pretty unhinged. Like yeah we the audience knows he was lying but...yeah. The fact you just don't know the entire movie what Howards actual intentions are is so good. And then she finally gets out and finds out "oh shit it was all real". Amazing writing. I loved it.

    I like the concept too that it’s not only about surviving the monsters we were expecting but the monsters already around us. When Howard was talking about Megan I kept thinking he’s just trying to placate her and make himself seem vulnerable so she’ll stop resisting. And her having the backstory she does so it gets set up as her trying to dissect if it’s a trauma response to past events or is her gut on point with the situation. That internal battle and the flight or fight arc and trying to decide which to use when really came through in the tension.

  • @pokes404
    @pokes404 Месяц назад +27

    I believe at this point, Bad Robot was thinking about building "Cloverfield" as an anthology universe. Something more like The Twilight Zone than the MCU. New movies/TV shows would be entirely new stories that didn't really connect together in any way. Maybe some Easter eggs here or there, but not a shared universe of continuity. That's why this movie has the Cloverfield branding (which was a late addition to the film), but doesn't have anything to do with the first movie.
    But nevertheless, this is a really well-made psychological thriller. I wish it hadn't come out so early in the award cycle because I absolutely believe John Goodman would have gotten a nomination if it had been released later in the year. I think the people who vote had kind of forgotten about this performance once it came time for nominations. He plays socially awkward hermit, paranoid conspiracist, goofy but loveable oaf, and terrifying monster equally well. He doesn't tip his hand too far in any direction until the very end, and it really ratchets up the drama/tension by keeping the audience constantly guessing about what his motivations are.

      Actually all the movies connect because in the third they explain the cause and effect of what happed and where the first two resides within the cloverfield universe. Also you don’t get the full story from the movies themselves since when each movie came out they made websites that coincide with how they are all connected in a kind of “you have to figure it out yourself “ I’d go into detail but that would spoil the third movie. Also each website was created to be like “what a website would look like from that universe as if the movies were real”

    • @pokes404

      @@DarkLarva It wasn't really their intention at the time to make this a universe with a shared continuity. But once the MCU really got rolling, and shared universes became the next big thing in Hollywood, Bad Robot attempted to make everything connect together with the Cloverfield Paradox. That movie is so terrible though that I don't even count it as being part of the franchise. I prefer to treat Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane as two separate entries of an anthology series, like it was originally intended.

      I think it's sort of a no-win decision for producers/distributors of genre films if they want to be successful financially AND critically:
      - release during the ideal, "awards season," window, lose out on near-term sales, but possibly gain critical recognition & a longer profit tail,
      * or *
      - release during the lull periods (aka Dump Months), when non-prestige movies have customarily been released, in order to maximize the # of theatre showings, thus guaranteeing near-term sales but also signaling that you don't expect your film to critically recognized.
      Given that, "Cloverfield," had a Dump Month premiere & made tons of money, I imagine that led the decision to release, "10 Cloverfield Lane," in March. TBF, this film didn't really need any awards to be memorable either as a genre movie or more broadly, but they did win a lot. It just wasn't the Oscars or Golden Globes, which says more about the credibility of those two awards than about the scores of genre films that repeatedly get ignored.

    To me, survival horror movies of the 2000's have three bad-ass chicks: Erin in You're Next, Grace in Ready or Not, and Michelle in 10CL. Mew towering over the competition.

    I hated “Cloverfield,” but I love this movie. Your reaction was delightful, and your summary leaves little to be said. The ingenious script builds tension with its claustrophobic paranoia better than anything I’ve ever seen, I think, and the performances were superb. When this came out, I told my brother that John Goodman should at least have gotten an Oscar nomination, but they never reward movies like this.
    I appreciate your consistent enthusiasm and insights, so I’ve decided to subscribe.

    Another day, another great reaction! "10 Cloverfield Lane" is not only terrifying, this is one of John Goodman's best performances-and given his track record, that's saying something! If I was in a car accident in the middle of nowhere handcuffed to a bed by a weirdo, I'd have "Saw" and "Split" flashbacks, too! Hopefully, you'll react to "Overlord," the "Cloverfield" prequel with Wyatt Russell.
    BTW, your "Django Unchained" reaction is one of the best movie reactions I've ever seen! Your knowledge/enjoyment of film really shows! To me, when it comes to the villains,Stephen was even worse than Calvin because he betrayed his own kind to save himself and his masters, which makes his death at Django's hands even more satisfying. On a lighter note, when I mentioned in my previous post (which was deleted during your reupload) about the rumor about Django & Brunhilda being Shaft's great-grandparents, Brunhilda's master's name was Von SHAFT. Curiouser & curiouser! 🤔
    Other John Goodman movie suggestions: "The Big Easy," "The Big Lebowski," "Raising Arizona," "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" "Matinee,""Flight" & "Blues Brothers 2000."
    BTW, do you plan to react to the"Joker: Folie A Deux" teaser? 🤡

    I had the pleasure of seeing 10CL in the theater on opening weekend. I ADORED it. Loved it from start to finish. John Goodman is a national treasure. There are people who hated the ending but I think that's just because it was a prolonged action scene. Think about it like this: If the movie ended with the main character seeing the UFO and simply saying "Oh COME on" and then cut to credits, those same people who hated the ending probably would have dug it. It's not the reveal that's so upsetting to people, it's the massive tonal shift. That said, I accept it completely. I was with this ride all the way.

    The Cloverfield series is more of an anthology series. Kind of like Twilight Zone or Black Mirror, but movies. They DO connect, but indirectly, there's some explanation of that in "The Cloverfield Paradox".

And then just when you think everything is going to be ok, you find out it was actually an invasion and wtf!? I love this movie. It happens in an alternate reality from Cloverfield, both realities of which are created in "the Cloverfield Paradox" which...don't go in expecting much.

It was such an intense Psychological Rollercoaster that makes the viewers forget it's a Sci-fi movie but then the ending tops everything Perfectly 🔥🔥.

    This movie is a cross between Misery & War of the Worlds. You can see parts of this movie in both these films. John Goodman did his best Kathy Bates here. As you may know or not know, Kathy Bates won the Best Actress Oscar for her part as Annie Wilkes in Misery. Mary Elizabeth played the James Caan role & then plays the Tom Cruise role (War of the Worlds). Strangely enough, both Misery & this movie starts with a car accident too. Both movies are a must watch. War of the Worlds a Spielberg movie, Misery based on a Stephen King novel, directed by the Meathead, Rob Reiner. Both movies were an upgrade to this film (Don't get me wrong, this was a pretty good film) & if you saw both, before 10 Cloverfield, as they both came out way before, you would see where some ideas were clearly replicated from both movies. I hope you watch both, start with Misery. If you liked John Goodman here, you would love Kathy Bates in Misery. Definitely one of the most outstanding roles by an actress in a film.

    I saw the trailer for this movie back in the day--it started with the "I think We're Alone Now" scene, and then the song got slower and the images creepier, and creepier, and it was the perfect hook. I hadn't even heard of Cloverfield at that point, but I found it and watched it before I saw Cloverfield Lane in theaters. I remember some people not liking the ending at the time, but to me it's perfect--just because someone is crazy, doesn't mean they're never right! Michelle's arc wouldn't be complete without it. And John Goodman is just incredible.
