Bit of an irony given how America's own campaign of unrestricted submarine warfare was a good deal more successful than Germany's even with the utter disaster that was the Mark 14 torpedo and the Bureau of Ordinance having their heads buried so deep that they would see daylight. Though to be fair, Japan hadn't had the early taste of anti-submarine warfare that Britain had from WWI and their doctrine emphasized the use of submarines as a support element of the battle fleet instead of commerce raiding.

K-1 sank after colliding with K-4 off the Danish coast. K-2 caught fire on its first test drive. K-3 plunged inexplicably to the seabed with the prince of Wales on board, eventually resurfacing only to sink after being rammed by K-6. K-4 ran aground; K-5 foundered in the bay of Biscay.

Honestly, it's like GUP for ships. Essentially, all of the characters in this series are in training to be essentially UN peacekeepers after the sea levels rose worldwide.
