Have you tried the Stukas yet ? Dive bombing in the middle of ground fire in VR should really be something ! Be sure to fit the jericho trumpets !
It's pretty sick already in pancake. Still have to do this in VR as well. Guess the only thing more jarring would be sitting in an SBD diving towards the Akagi while being totally engulfed in AAA from the whole fleet down there...
Those 109s that should be protecting you are off having epic 1v1 battles. B17 crews used to complain that their escorts would be wooed away with the prospect of a kill, leaving bombers behind to fend for themselves.
Funny how I just graduated from Jump School at Ft. Benning today as you make this video. Having jumped from modern equipment with todays best safety standards I truly respect the courage and bravery of all Paratroopers of this golden era.
Ju52 was not a stressed skin aircraft, meaning the skin was not a structural element, which means holes in the skin don't really impact its ability to hold together.
I half expected GS to somehow win a dogfight with one of those Yaks. "A Lot of people don't know this but the JU-52 is actually great in the 2-circle." "Alright so we're behind him, I'll just pull out my sidearm open this window and.... splash one yak." *Music cue*
They actually could not get into the C-47s without people shoving from behind, people say it was the equipment load out they were carrying, but your explanation is much more spicy!
Same... but to be fair, the only thing that held me off of flying her was me being too lazy to map the 3rd engine stuff to something. I mean, I basically need to remap everything to make that work somehow.
They where flying over my house even a couple of years ago. Unfortunately one of the „JU-air“ crashed in the Swiss alps. They lost the flight licence after that. What a pitty, what great sounding machines they where, cruising with 120 kmh on low altitudes 👌🇨🇭👍
There was one flying regularly over my place until like 2 years ago... could always hear that awesome sound. Even if I did not manage to spot it, it always has been a great moment. That sound is so distict you can immediately tell what's up there if you know it.
Dunno if you're a history buff or if you just do this for the vids but these have all come out really nice so far. Seeing the real, historic tape of the planes, then getting in the sim really brings more realism to it all. Very cool. Good work.
I've always wondered what it must be like for pilots of slow heavies like cargo and transport aircraft. This video really brought that home in a visceral way. I found myself wanting to stand up and check 6 pretty much Everytime you did. Great video man🖖
Well. that was different. Love the history lesson intros. You were flying so low, I thought the paratroopers would be free falling all the way to the deck lol!
Aircews that flew in Bombers, Transport, Coastal Command (to name a few) are the unsung top lads of the air war. Growling, if you ever do a Bomber gameplay (with Lancaster, Stirling, B17 or any other) that be really appreciated.
Hi sidewinder! I wanted to thank you for introducing me to flight sims, it seems wonderful! i just bought Cliffs of Dover-Blitz (cheap so it's not as much of a risk) and a HOTAS. I hope i can see you in battle!
This was actually really cool! Loved the history lecture and it was really cool to see a perspective of a utility pilot in the war vs a fighter. Really made you feel the earnestness of trying to get in .. do the mission and get the hell out! I was rooting for you to make it back almost from the beginning! Hopefully see some more bomber/utility missions in the future!
Incredible video to watch, very immersive, I really didn't think you'd get that flying tin shack home! Fair play to you though, you did a brilliant job👍
Great video. One of my favourite things in IL-2 was/is playing the bombers...you're pretty much helpless, but the cool factor of trying to fly an He-111 is worth it.
Because of the way the Fallschirmjagers parachute operated there was a one in four chance of causing ankle and leg injuries on landing. So there was a chance that 25% of your force could be out of action even before the fighting started.
Kinda like my trip to Red Flag in 2000 in the C-141. Got jumped by aggressors post-drop and our friendly fighters were nowhere to be found…. Pretty atrocious survival rates for the airlift fleet at that flag…
Just imagine the first version of this had only one engine, and both the BMW 132 (in this model) and the single BMW VII were rated somewhere around 700hp. So basically it should still fly on one engine, but just barely since the other two ones still add weight and drag the 1m didn't come with. Don't expect to be able to climb... :D
Don't forget your instruments will also tell you good information in a multi-engine aircraft. In any aircraft you can get an indication of what is hit and if you notice the temps climbing early enough you might be able to baby it home. Of course in IL2 or DCS you aren't going to actually be in any danger if you crash!
Great video! I love it when you give us a little history and back story... I think you may have set a record for lead absorbed and still landing at home... Was there an undamaged part of that plane?
They also dropped at half the altitude and twice the speed...resulting in quite a few injuries on each drop. Realistically the lack of air power and suitable transport is what did them in. "Most" paratrooper operations in WW2 were unlike what we see in the movies, where they're dropping into active combat. Most of the time they were dropped a good distance from the objective.
Some years ago I flew with the JU from the Lufthansa and all passengers were able to climb into the cockpit in flight ( middle seat of the board engineer). I don't think you can stand up there to look behind for enemy planes. There is not enough space. The only way to survive was a escorted flight or simply luck.
"Only two battalions vs two full soviet divisions" - texts like this should immediately raise red flags. It was single 1295th infantry regiment of 160th Inf Div that captured village Luzhki near Smolensk on 23rd March 1943.
The Fallschirmjagers jumped with nothing but pistols and grenades. They were expected to fight their way to their other weapons which were dropped in separate containers.
Would love to see some low level schnellbomber attacks in the 88. That's my go to in IL2 especially online..can be hit and miss but usually the twin rear gunners can mess up a foolhardy fighter pilot
To appreciate this mission, consider the doomed Luftwaffe effort in supplying by air the Axis troops stuck in Tunisia with the Allies closing in on them at all sides, and Allied fighters massacring the transport aircraft.

One of the coolest ways to fly the JU-52 in IL2 Great Battles is at night with no hud in VR. It's such an immersive and atmospheric experience!
Getting my VR headset tomorrow. Will definitely try this!
Watching the friendly plane get shot down from through the window in vr is honestly one of the coolest things I've ever seen in a game

Very intrestring to see how you flew the Ju-52. You basically flew it like a modern highspeed fighter and you should use the rudder much more.
Yup, side slips are your friend when working at foiling a gun pass in a slow transport airframe. Good point Mike!
You're a great narrator, historian.

The giant balls on the men from this Era jumping from this plane or a C47 must have been all the planes could handle to lift up off the ground.
They actually could not get into the C-47s without people shoving from behind, people say it was the equipment load out they were carrying, but your explanation is much more spicy!

Yes, big brass balls necessitated the nose mounted 3rd engine.
This was great. Very tense. To some degree fighter pilots held fate in their hands but for bomber crews it’s like flying a lottery ticket.

I made a picture of a low flying pink one, when I was snowboarding in the Alps.
That was the one with the Milka advertise (for some time…)
Those paratroopers would have to be real badasses to jump from that altitude and into a really sketchy situation that you portrayed.
Dunno if you're a history buff or if you just do this for the vids but these have all come out really nice so far. Seeing the real, historic tape of the planes, then getting in the sim really brings more realism to it all. Very cool. Good work.
