If it did happen every car filling up that day would have been effected too, That has happened at other gas stations and some of the vehicles were not even able to leave the station at all.

Almost all modern gas stations have water sensors that will alert the people at the location if there is water intrusion. I am a mechanic. Once about 25 years ago a local gas station received a load of fuel. The delivery driver left the cap off the fill port and the cover that goes over that off as well. It rained very hard for an hour or so after that. It was very early morning and the station wasn't open yet. After it opened 7 cars pulled in and all pumped gas at pretty much the same time. As the cars started and began to drive away, one by one they all died. The lot was full of dead cars. Water is heavy and settles to the bottom of the tank and that is the same place that the fuel pump in your car draws gas from. They towed 4 cars to the dealership I worked at as we were the largest shop in town, 2 cars to another dealership and one to an independent shop. I don't know what the other shops did but another mechanic and I unhooked the fuel lines at the engine and then energized the cars fuel pumps. We ran them until the tanks were dry and then refilled the tanks with fresh fuel and a can of Heet water eliminator in each car. After putting the fuel lines back on we cranked the cars a few times as there was still a very small amount of water in the fuel rails on the engine itself. But once started they engines spit and sputtered for about 3 or 4 minutes and then smoothed out. We took each of the cars for a long test drive, about 12 miles total, and they were good to go. The bill was about $100 per car back then and the gas station picked up the bill. When there is a real problem there will be multiple cars showing it. Every pump, as long as it's the same octane gas, will pull fuel from the same tank, through the same lines. I know there was water in her gas, you can see it in the bottle but that isn't conclusive proof that the station is to blame. Plus, most modern gasoline has Ethanol blended into it and that alone will eliminate smaller amounts of water. It's basically the same as adding that bottle of Heet we put in 25 years ago.

Water causes ethanol to separate from the gas because it so readily mixes with water. In a way, ethanol starts the process and ATTRACTS water into your gas as it breaks down and separates and daily condensation cycles bring more and more.
Fresh ethanol mixes readily with it and is attracted to it (hydrophilic), which is why it can help, but it certainly doesn’t eliminate it. It just dilutes the separated water with something your car can burn.

    • @emmettturner9452

In many cases it’s not that the fuel was contaminated by water but rather the fuel had too much ethanol. If there were a mix up you might end up with double the ethanol, or worse (E85, for example). You might find a tank half full of water and ethanol if you park your motorcycle or store your boat over winter like that. Granted, it couldn’t happen in a week and a half like this woman is claiming but it does happen.

So while I have no doubt she's telling the truth, I'd have one question: did other people come forward with the same issue? If she got bad fuel, that same day, I would expect to see dozens of other people with the exact same issue. It would have been very helpful if WSB-TV at least mentioned, "We didn't find out if others had this issue", or, "We reached out to other drivers that bought gas that day and they also had issues", or, they reached out and no one else had issues.
If no one else had issues with the fuel, then I wouldn't blame Costco. If 20 other people had the same issue, then Costco wouldn't have a leg to stand on. Thankfully, it's only a $700 bill. Obviously not cheap, but it's not like she needs a new engine.

Shane is correct. Alcohol raises the octane equivalent and bonds with the water to make a small contamination burnable. E10 does this naturally...while 100% gasoline will only form water bubbles and eventually a bottom layer.
Likely she buys ethanol and her car has a non vented tank. It would take a lot of water to ruin her fuel.
Now the evidence shown here in the drink bottle is likely not ethanol, as the water would be cloudy white and the water it couldn't bond with would be clear and on bottom. Maybe they shook it for the shot...but it looks like a classic old gas and water in it story they used to tell us about repaired lawn mowers that weren't fixed correctly.
The mechanic is also showing debris in the sample. That would plug her fuel filters and mean a simple dump and flush plus new filters. The mechanic is likely just as shady with the "bill".
However if sand and 20% water was being pumped that day, 100 customers would have complained....yet nobody else is on this story or been alerted to GA inspectors that day or week.

Impossible! I worked in the fuel industry and when you check the tanks when fuel is delivered drivers put a paste on the stick that will turn red when delivering when water is detected . This protects delivery companies and stations from bad fuel , the cases of bad fuel are usually from fuel that sits in the tanks to long usually mid grade and premium the fuel will separate and give off a funny smell . Diesel fuel actually has water in it and living organisms will grow in the fuel which also will smell funny and clog filters .

Our time had reached its zenith, and it is now over. Everything not just Banks, Stock including 401Ks, are suffering from the recession and crashes. My $750K retirement equity portfolio is losing money. Because of inflation, I keep losing. Similar to how Rome fell under its despotic emperors, this world will also. I apologise if you are considering retirement but are concerned that your pension won't cover the rising expense of living. There are terrible foreign policies worldwide, as well as disastrous regulatory, fiscal, and energy policies.

We had an issue like this at the dealership i work at. But in our case, it was immediately after they filled up and it was multiple vehicles showing up the same day. With as busy as that Costco is, I'm surprised its just her with the issue. Thats a pretty large amount of water too, something tells me someone dumped a bunch of water in on purpose. Could be a neighbor, a random person, someone she wronged, hell it could be the mechanic. Ive worked with some shady people, whose to say that water bottle was empty when he filled it up with the gas.

The Veeder Root fuel tank alarms would not only sound audibly but would also print out a water alarm triggered by contamination and if i remember correctly the Veeder Root tank monitor computer stores all alarms for 30 days.
Water in fuel is pretty rare these days and im leaning towards her mechanic being crooked and wanting to charge big $ for a problem that may have been pretty inexpensive or simple. Technicians almost never check for water like this vid showed a jar with H2o usually they just replace the fuel filter and done deal if her water to fuel concentration was so high that the tank had to be drained it wouldn't have run.
Plus it doesn't sound like even one other customer had this experience.
Get a new mechanic and always look at the reviews they have 😉

  • @marcusd6096

Yes this does happen. The issue is, so many people dont know where to begin when their cars break down. A lot of people dont take their cars to the dealership to find out thats what it is. The car goes to a friend or family member to get worked on and by the time one finds out its water in the gas, its too late. Water in gas has happened to me on a few occasion. My vehicles were under warranty at the time so i took it to the dealership to find out that water was in my gas. Makes sense because the car breaks down about 10 mins after leaving the gas station. Nobody ever expects it to be gas because in all of the years of getting gas, it has never happened to us. That we know of. So i believe her.

The mechanic could also lied to her. It could just be a faulty spark plug or wire that caused the abnormal idling. It's not the first time where mechanics take advantage of people with no experience in fixing cars. Usually those people are women. They'd make up some bogus claim that her car needs (an expensive) procedure to flush out the whole fuel system and put new fuel inside. Because she's such a nice customer (Sucker), they'll only charge her $700 bucks. If the pumps had problems, there should be more than just one car that had that problem. It's just like how to trace the source of a foodborne disease outbreaks.
