A wiseman says, if you trust someone with your life, then you do not own yourself anymore. Always question, research, and choose. It is your life, giving it to someone or something else would be an act of suicide. Also, yes thank you words and phrases used by government, medical, media, and corperation mean different things. To assume someones words, is detrimental to the understanding
Media criticism isn't your usual thing, but this was the clearest, most approachable takedown of the chloroquine hype I've seen so far, and that includes major media. I think the occasional "here's what's going on with this media hype around something tangentially related to cocktails" (coupled with your usual charming cocktail description/review/history lesson) would be a very welcome addition to the RUclips drink-o-sphere.
@DankNDoughnuts Okay, so you're claiming that he's part of the Deep State, even though Trump and co. brought him aboard the pandemic team. Your premise is that he is part of a group intending to overthrow the government by...what exactly? Is it based on his predictions of casualties? The ones he adjusted based on current social distancing guidelines? Is it that he's adamant about this type of medication, even though any doctor (hell, anyone who knows the scientific method) would vouch for continual testing and approval to avoid spiking those same casualties he adjusted? Do you, in all genuine curiosity, think that he is using this pandemic for personal enrichment, even though he has no ties to pharma reps, he has no current stock in any major supplies, and pushing for even further social distancing would hurt his economic future? The thing is, the premise of the Deep State is Schrodinger's Dumbassery. They are supposedly so powerful yet couldn't beat Donald fking Trump. Which is it? Are they incompetent or all powerful? Neither can exist together, and neither can your simpleton-endearing premises regarding this man as a member of it. Stop with the conspiracy theories. Wash your hands. Stay inside. Have a drink. It's clear as day you need one (or maybe to be cut off).
I'd like this twice if I could. Can't speak for everyone but personally I LOVED this kind of elucidating content. Not only did I learn about a cocktail, which is why I subbed to begin with, but it came packaged with some enlightening perspectives on modern topical issues. Keep it up, Internet Drinky Man!
We need a spinoff channel named “internet drinky man”. This is where you wax philosophic after a few of this week’s featured drink... or where you invent completely new drinks that seem like familiar drinks... I vote for a Pandemic Quarantine Blaster.
Wow. As a pharmacist I’m blown away at how thorough and accurate you are, even going so far as citing the studies and explaining the importance of sample size, control/comparison groups, and even validity of the authors and institutions themselves. Side note: the syrupy G&T looked amazing
Greg, I am a surgical resident physician in a major university hospital not too far from Jersey. Our system currently has 300 admitted covid patients and we expect a peak around April 18th. I have been watching your videos for about a year now and have always loved them. I even comment frivolously to help your channel with the RUclips algorithm. But this was by far my favorite video. Very well presented and researched. Thank you. Hope and your family are staying safe. Regards, Mike
@DankNDoughnuts You realize you are trying to convince a doctor who is watching people die horrifically from this that it's a conspiracy theory, don't you? You're insane.
As someone who graduated from a communications program last year, I can't thank you enough for using your platform to help teach people better media literacy during these times. Here's to keeping people informed on top of making some stellar drinks!
I'm a nurse working in NYC, thanks for this. I have coworkers who have lupus, RA, and other autoimmune disorders, and they can't get their drugs because of the hype. Thanks for keeping me sane, and thanks for helping us out.
"How to drink" more like "How to have a healthy and smart discussion about current topics with a wonderful host that also happens to teach delightful drinks"
I found this very enjoyable. It was well written and thoroughly researched, presented in an entertaining format, and also featured some drinky drinks by some talented drinky man.
This is like the more advanced version of Charlie Berens teaching how to make a brandy old fashioned and how to do the census or a Bloody Mary and how to donate supplies to hospitals
@Edgar Friendly What in the hell are you trying to say?! It's an incoherent spew of words that, I think, has some through line, but is the exact opposite of what he actually said. Also, when I'm responding your comment it's 12 minutes old and already has a like. You liked your own comment, didn't you?
THANK YOU! As a physician I have to give this 10 likes plus for presenting to the people the concept of bad studies and crap medical papers!! Critical thinking is more important than ever. Keep up the great work!
He forgot to mention G6PD deficiency and the fact quinine, tonic, chloroquine, ect are on the contraindication list for G6PD deficiency and can cause hemolytic anemia crisis and can exacerbate any infection you already have. For some reason eventhough it's the most common enzyme deficiency in the world it always gets left out. I've been puzzled by the medical professionals that have over looked the estimated 400 million people who have it and the fact that unless you've had a qualitative or quantitative test don't know it.
Physician here. Thank you so much for helping bring awareness to an important issue in such an accurate and fun way. You sir, are a gentleman, and a scholar, on top of the original internet drinky man.
Video takeaway: Dr. Greg prescribes staying in and drinking medicinal G&T's, and damned if I'm going to ignore that medical expertise. Stay safe and stay smart out there, folks.
fun fact that tonic syrup is made by Tom Ritcher who is a veteran of the industry working in attaboy, milk and honey, dear irving, and many others. he actually mentored me for a while when i worked in montclair (greg if you’re reading this we spoke about it on twitter) and he’s a super nice guy. super passionate and knowledgeable
As someone with a PhD in Biology, I think you perfectly articulated the problem with scientific studies with just a small control group or no control whatsoever. Love your channel.
I didn't expect the most rational and well researched video I've seen so far on this topic to be from Internet Drinkie Man, yet here we are. If this is what we can expect, hell yeah to more media criticism.
As a grad student working in the field of neuroscience, wasn't expecting a quick breakdown on research methodology on this episode, but it was fun to listen to you talk about it.
As a pharmacist, when I saw the title of your video, I was telling myself "uh-oh, what is he gonna say?". I was a bit afraid you would go with some of the misinformation that is currently spread around chloroquine and its effectiveness against COVID-19. But, I must admit, I was pleasantly surprised to see you did your research and found the correct information. AND, you also described pretty well why chloroquine might (emphasis on might) help against COVID-19 by reducing the inflammatory response (and perhaps in other ways, read the later comments, but beware the troll) So, hats off to you, you did your duty as a public persona and gave factual information instead of going with the "weasel words", as you say. Something that might interest some, there is a large study being done in Montreal where they aim to have around 6500 patients split in 2 groups (one placebo and one treatment) where they try colchicine, a treatment for gout, which is also an inflammatory disease. If things go well, we should have results in around 3 months as to if reducing the inflammatory response with that drug helps reducing death rates with COVID-19. Also, as Greg said, don't take medication without advice from your doctor and pharmacist, especially chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine. Some people may be at risk of having severe arrhythmia with these medication and shouldn't therefore be taken lightly. And lastly, Hendricks made a gin with quinine already mixed with it, so you can double down on the quinine ;) I'm saying that as a joke, the amounts of quinine in the gin and in tonic in general is too low to have an actual effect on the human body..... but please, don't take this as a cue to drink huge amounts of gin & tonic.
chloroquine is an inophore that allows zinc and some antibiotics to enter the cell and prevent replicase of COVID rna. It is 100% critical to covid recovery and is not meant to be taken by itself as an "anti-inflammatory". This is non-negotiable and has been peer reviewed in medical journals. Contrary to what you and this bartender says there have been plenty of clinical trials on chloroquine, with positive and replicatable results, going back to at least 2012. This was published by Teipei Medical University in Japan as a great way to treat the SARS virus, which is what COVID-19 is derived from.
Long story short, you and this bartender don't know what the hell you're talking about. Please go get another profession where stupid people like you can be beneficial to the rest of us.
@@fluxcapacitor05 yes, it is known that chloroquine helps zinc "penetrate" cells and zinc is "potentially" an antiviral (still debated to this day). Don't take what you read somewhere for hard facts. More studies need to be done before we go to conclusions. And you say 100% critical to covid recovery... are you a doctor by any chance? Why is it then that the study done in Wuhan, albeit with a very small sample size, showed no difference with patients using chloroquine and those who did not?
I loved this! When a drink can become an educational history lesson and a critique of modern media, it gives us hope we still live amongst good men. Three cheers for Internet Drinkie Man!
I found your channel today when your “Archers peppermint patty” video popped up in my my feed. 2 videos later your “D&D drinks” video came up and after seeing your massive nerd side I subscribed. So far you had covered two of the great joys in my life, trying tasty new drinks and nerdy stuff. Next up was a couple of videos about Gin which I’m currently loving and working my way through sampling as many different styles and cocktails as I can lay my hands on, which led to this video. It was so unexpected to hear such an amazingly well articulated response to junk/poorly reported/intentionally misleading representations of science and to have you add information and background that was so informative and new even after 5 months of casually following these sorts of articles/debunkings. Thank you for not being afraid of stepping out of your ‘wheelhouse’ and doing your part to teach people to think critically and look deeper than the headlines. Cheers
Hey, I'm from the future and I just want you to know this aged like a fine wine or good cheese. I just found your channel and I'm happy to see that even at the very start of this rolling disaster your used your platform for good rather than panic and nonsense. Also, your gin episodes are baller.
Hey I'm from further into the future and I just want you to know that now we know that Pfizer restricted other methods of treatment from being talked about and paid off politicians. They sponsor like every single news program now.
@@ArrakisHeir88 hey I'm from even further in the future and we knew how to control it and deliberately didn't, and snake oil fake treatments like hydroxychloroquine were part of that, and blaming one company when it was the entire capitalist class is definitely missing the forest for the trees
"I don't normally do media criticism here on How To Drink. Maybe something I'd like to do more of!" Yes Greg for the love of god please do more of this!
Wow! Just wow... You just summarized the actual evidence better than any news channel! This is a real PSA. I liked your channel, now you just took it to another level. It's easy for panic to spread in this kind of situations and your explanation is just perfect to calm people down, and keep the interested at the same time. (Family Physician, Portugal)
As a Hospital Corpsman in Jersey (and a fan of gin and tonic) dealing with all the craziness right now I'd like to thank you for being the voice of drunken reason.
As a doctor I just wanted to thank you for this video. I enjoy your videos, but appreciate this one in particular for you print out an accurate explanation about hydroxychloroquine
As a public health professional, health educator, and AOD specialist, this video is everything. Love your videos, glad to know you have recovered from whatever it was that got you, and looking forward to more of your videos. Keep up the good work and spreading the good word and stay well! Oh, and G&Ts are one of the greatest cocktails ever.
I am usually a hater of social media (RUclips being the exception) but you have shown us that it can be a force for good, not just evil. I’ve already loved your show for its entertainment value, and for teaching me about cocktails, but you have really earned a place as a voice of reason. Well done and thank you.
A new study shows that the controversial drug hydroxychloroquine touted by former President Donald Trump increased the survival rate of severely ill coronavirus patients. The observational study, published by medRxiv, found that antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine, along with zinc, could increase the coronavirus survival rate by as much as nearly 200% if distributed at higher doses to ventilated patients with a severe version of the illness.
As an avid fan of a gin and tonic, as well as being a medical professional who's currently helping treat patients in the midst of this, let me just say how much I genuinely appreciate the hard work that you actually put in to helping people understand verification of sources. I thoroughly appreciate the fact that you put the citations at the bottom. Love your Channel because I enjoy a good drink, and because I find you incredibly amusing because having watched every episode, you're the kind of person that I would love to have a drink with and be friends because my friends and I are gaming nerds who like to drink as well. Thanks again for not only another good episode, but for some goddamn common sense LOL
Not only are you entertaining when making cocktails, you also have a scientific approach to hot topics in dire times…I have become a fan, with respect from France, cheers Greg
Here's a fun fact: Tonic water glows light blue under UV light. I found that out when I had a bottle of it sitting near my old gaming computer that had UV effect lighting!
As someone who works in public health research, I want to add my props to your very clear explanation of the issues regarding the recent claims regarding chloroquine. Thank you!
This rekindled my husband’s love for gin! Gin and tonic was his drink of choice in the late 70’s. As a field supervisor for what became FEMA, they were based out of Sacramento CA. Most nights were spent closing down Fanny Ann’s Salon. He swore off gin. Only to visit it again after he watched this episode with me. Wonderful cocktail!
I mean if you're definition of "The mainstream media" is the POTUS and Fox News than yeah: Most of the media I've seen surrounding the Chloroquine thing has been "It's dangerous, it doesn't work, why does the president keep insisting it works?"
Andrew Cunningham yeah, it's insane. doctors across the world are using it and they agree it's the most effective treatment. recently a dem representative was cured by it. but just because trump said a couple of times that it's promising we're supposed to ignore its potential, utterly insane
What a great video! I’m also a provider treating covid 19 patients, and love your videos. I have to say, this one hits home hard with the amount of research you clearly put into the episode, putting forth some solid, accurate, and well explained medical information, while still keeping entertaining info regarding the gin and tonic (which I love). For everyone, please be careful with where you get your medical information. Far too many times, my patients have come to me with confusion regarding medical advice and things they read and heard on google, or in the news! Thanks so much for the great vid! Amazing!!!!
In the mid 60s, I was living in the Philippines and was introduced to gin and tonic. I loved it The quinine must have worked, as I did not get malaria! For me, lime and gin were made for each otherand an English friend has convinced me that not all club sodas are created equal. Excellent educational video!
Over 3000 papers? That's ridiculous. The average hardworking professor or researcher publishes about 1 paper a year. If this were truly his own work, he would have done hundreds of lifetimes worth of work in 10 years. Numbers like those can only be gotten through fraud, and pay-to-publish, not peer reviewed journals (which is a HUGE problem in science now).
What he's doing is that he put his name on every papers that are made by the institute he founded and lead... That's how he get the 3K papers. Most of french scientists are skeptical of him, either in microbiology field or in other field
1 a year seems rather low of an estimate. The professor I graduated under published 16 papers last year although that appears to be quite a productive year. The numbers might differ between fields however.
he was 'co-signing' which is like saying 'oh yea i kinda agree with it'... you usually co-sign stuff you've either researched or is in line with your own research but ofcourse this guy just signs everything that has a free space on the bottom
Came for the drinking, stayed for the science. Seriously though, fantastic video. Looking around today, all you see is misinformation standing on a leg of, like you said, anecdotal evidence. Thank you for taking the time to cite your sources and explain the differences of what you are talking about. If you want an interesting watch, ChubbyEmu did a great video talking about the same couple you spoke of at the end. Stay safe guys.
Before watching this video I was under the impression you were interesting when making cocktails. Turns out you’re interesting with whatever you do. Fascinating video!
This is the best video you've ever made. As a skeptic and science nerd, I really appreciate the knowledge bombs you dropped and the introduction of some key critical thinking techniques. Magnificent.
I'd like to put it on record to say that I love your episodes that include the history of drinks/ingredients/cocktail movements, and I would love to see more of them. Please don't stop.
I'm not a huge alcohol fan, but this is a fun channel to watch/listen to! And if I can learn to make a few drinks for family and friends, hey, that's even better~ But! I'm soooooooooo damn happy you brought this up too! Thank you for helping to stop the spread of misinformation! Hope you, your family, and co-workers all stay safe!
This video is informative, entertaining, and intelligently written. Greg, man, I know you’re the drinky-man, but I really appreciate the care you’ve taken here.
Hey Greg. Wow. I already love you and your channel, but my respect grew for you even more today! I really loved the tie of the historical uses for quinine to today's current pandemic and how thoroughly you researched everything. Keep being awesome!! :)
So I've tried so many odd drinks because of this channel. A favorite still being Morty's flask, with Cognac and pickle juice....Still shocked it was good. I saw the tonic syrup today and am SO thankful you posted this video because it's FANTASTIC! Thanks Greg!
What is it about serving great drinks and holding interesting conversations that bartenders do so well? Seriously, loving the little 'break from the drinks' talks youve been doing recently to history or culture surrounding them, really sets the channel apart. Stay safe all
Hi Greg. Great video. I am a physician (ophthalmologist) and I must commend you on your thoughtful presentation about chloroquine and hydroxychloroqine. It's perfectly understandable why people would want these medications to help with Covid 19 but the science isn't there. My experience with these meds is monitoring people who taking them chronically for retinal toxicity. I would implore people not to take any medications unless prescribed to them by their physicians (as you state in your video). Sadly, there is a lot of misleading information out there - even coming from the White House briefing room. Please discuss your medical concerns with your physician. BTW the last syllable in chloroqine and hydroxychloroquine rhymes with win not wine (unlike quinine.)
I know I'm commenting on a very old comment, but I'm glad someone brought up retinal toxicity. My mother was on a medication for her sarcoidosis and she eventually had to be taken off that medication permanently because of issues with her eyes. She'd see weird halos around lights, especially at night, and all that. She's on different meds and autoimmune disease is mostly inactive/suppressed at this point, I believe.
As someone with a background in psychology, your willingness to actually open up and critique a study for validity as made me a forever follower of your content. I had subbed a long time ago but wish I could sub again for this video. Also your drinks are good.
Hey Greg and all, just wanted to say that my favorite videos you guys do are the ones where you explore and discuss the different kinds of spirits (your video on gins, Irish whiskeys, etc). As well, I very much appreciate you guys for taking a deep dive into this media criticism. You have a large platform, and it’s frankly heartwarming to see you using it to inform people regarding misconceptions that may harm them. You care about your audience and it shows. I struggle to find more meaningful words than “Thank you so much,” but I assure you I would be saying it over and over.
Paramedic here. you basically nailed it man. well done in explaining things. also, current ideas is that covid doesn't inflame the lungs, but causes a cytokine storm that basically just gunks them up with garbage that covers the surface of the alveoli and prevents gas exchange that way. but really man, you nailed it and presented it fantastically. this should be fucking pinned to the top of youtube.
Can't believe this is 4 years already. This brought me back to what I consider the best time of my life as an adult with children. We all seemed so much inside ourselves. I took multiple walks through our woods daily. Got to be around the kids for the entire day. Probably what most humans ever have done. I know, it is different. I loved this time so much. I miss it incredibly.
"Lime is a crime!" That's what the tour guide told me in the taste room at the Beefeater Gin distillery in London. He said it clashes with the lemony botanicals used in the production of Beefeater. OK, I bought it--though my wife said later that lemons were probably cheaper!
Eh, it's up to personal taste for most. I drink quite a few gin and tonics; sometimes I like a bit of lime, sometimes not. I understand that in the UK lemon is used frequently, but I can't say that I recall trying it that way myself. It really depends on what gin I'm using, what tonic water I'm using, and what my mood is at the time. TL;DR version: Try both and see what you like.

In addition to the official word from a few hours ago, I believe Greg has mentioned that his studio is in his garage in another video (although things may have changed since then), so... yes, it is in fact at his actual house.
I literally never comment, but my wife and I watch you all the time. I applaud your “political” bit at the last half. You’re awesome, you’re doing awesome things. Thank you for not only making a good drink, and being fun, but also for the science you threw in. The science needs to be trusted more than speculation and anecdotal evidence, and you hit that nail on the head. Good for you, and let me see if I can support you on patreon (currently out of work restaurant guy).

Internet drinks man. I love it. This episode was great. Personally I love how level, and intelligently you approach a topic. Seriously I would love to see more(maybe a sub channel). Where you sit down, pour a drink, and discuss an issue. News like it used to be, rational. Intelligent, unbiased, and objective. No opinions just the issue. Anyway, I would love to see that sort of thing.

Did anyone say how much quinine for lupus and RA daily maybe should be taking?
"How to drink" more like "How to have a healthy and smart discussion about current topics with a wonderful host that also happens to teach delightful drinks"
dude! we need more of these!
I found this very enjoyable. It was well written and thoroughly researched, presented in an entertaining format, and also featured some drinky drinks by some talented drinky man.
That's our Internet Drinky Man!
Agree. My reaction was wow; best breakdown on the research on Chloroquine for COVID19 I have seen yet. Also G&T is my drink of choice, on any planet.
This is like the more advanced version of Charlie Berens teaching how to make a brandy old fashioned and how to do the census or a Bloody Mary and how to donate supplies to hospitals
Speaking as
a professor emeritus of health education, you have just earned a grade of A+ in health crisis communication. Well done.
That means he approves of your biased propaganda.
@Edgar Friendly What in the hell are you trying to say?! It's an incoherent spew of words that, I think, has some through line, but is the exact opposite of what he actually said.
Also, when I'm responding your comment it's 12 minutes old and already has a like. You liked your own comment, didn't you?
The last half of this video makes me miss being in a bar. I miss people having discussions like this sometimes.

Is it true that the Quinine in (for example) Schwepps tonic water helps Zinc supplement inter into the cell? The same way hydroxychloroquine does

Physician here. Thank you so much for helping bring awareness to an important issue in such an accurate and fun way. You sir, are a gentleman, and a scholar, on top of the original internet drinky man.
'Cause he's a Modern Roooooooooogue! ..oops, wrong channel.
Honestly, though, Greg should be a Modern Rogue just for this video.
I'm gonna continue to drink huge amounts of gin & tonic and you can't stop me.
chloroquine is an inophore that allows zinc and some antibiotics to enter the cell and prevent replicase of COVID rna.
I was with you, right up to that last sentence. Nothing will stop me from drinking copious amounts of G+T.
Cheers
I am an anesthesiologist, and I must say, your explanation of quinine, chloroquine, and hydroxychloroquine were actually quite spot on!

For everyone, please be careful with where you get your medical information. Far too many times, my patients have come to me with confusion regarding medical advice and things they read and heard on google, or in the news! Thanks so much for the great vid! Amazing!!!!

If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, bury them in B.S.
It means they weren’t adequately peer reviewed and cross checked. Real peer review is an arduous invaluable task and makes for a solid paper.
he was 'co-signing' which is like saying 'oh yea i kinda agree with it'... you usually co-sign stuff you've either researched or is in line with your own research but ofcourse this guy just signs everything that has a free space on the bottom
Caring about your "customers" is never in bad taste. Great video.

Watched this after the mention in the new video. Thanks for caring about your informational accuracy.

"Lime is a crime!" That's what the tour guide told me in the taste room at the Beefeater Gin distillery in London. He said it clashes with the lemony botanicals used in the production of Beefeater. OK, I bought it--though my wife said later that lemons were probably cheaper!
They could also be biased against limes due to the whole "limey" slur from other countries back in the day.
Dude I don't know where you're buying your limes and lemons from, but here in the UK they're both £0.30 at Tesco...
they wouldn't use limes in the production of any product because it's seasonal.
@@ItamarvhVahnish The United Kingdom is a first world country with all the shipping benefits that that comes with. They're no more beholden to the seasonality of produce than the United States is. Yes, limes are harder to find and/or mors expensive off-season, but they are by no means out of reach for most for even such a frivolity as a drink's garnish.
