*Note:* of all the historical dates given in this video, if by any chance you think it's strange or out of context or even impossible, know that in the archaeological context we find human occupation in the Iberian Peninsula as far back as 1.400.000 years ago (the Iberian Paleolithic), so all the dates in this video such as 20.000, 17.500, 7.500 ago are in fact only a fraction of time in the great span of human presence in the Iberian Peninsula. This is how far archaeology can go with physical evidences of human presence, so it might be even older. Here's a fun fact, this time not from Portugal but from Spain: The oldest known map in the world was carved on stone 14.000 years ago, and found in a carvern at Abauntz in the region of Navarra (Cueva de Abauntz).

I now see the bibliography by the end of the video. Would be good though to get a list of which ones that deals with the continuous development from the Alvão "runes" via the Iberian scripts to the elder Futhark. Because that is the main key here to be able to follow these connections.

LOVE the video my friend! TRUTH is always so very nice to say the least! :) On the up and soon coming video's you speak of perhaps you should take a look in the mirror and say hmmm this red hair.... where does it begin.. because 30000 years ago give or take the first as we call them ginger genes appeared in 1 female, perhaps contact with another with another culture? Idk, but genetic code is like math, at the end of the day it does not speak to us lies, nor can it be denied. I myself have the genes that are extra vs the "normal" human, but to say normal this is not fair, I am speaking of myself after all as well as countless tens of millions. And this has a GREAT influence on all forms of culture. Especially since the first red headed person in Europe appears bang boom zoooooom out of no where about 30k years ago red headed peoples arise....and all of us adults know the work involved in such additions like so stated here. And as ALL men know, women have that magick of sorts over men, regardless of what age a person may be from that I am sure no one has had complaints of in ALL history. BUT I believe this addition would be a GREAT addition, for genetics seems oh so different from writing, but anyone whom so studies these things know such is FAR from the case. NOT to mention just having these genes should have more of a spotlight upon them for medical reasons. twice as much pain is felt by those among us with them and twice the pain killers and sedation medicine is needed for those with these genes as well. a science fact not many doctors are aware of. You will see what I mean when you... and I do VERY much HOPE you do look this up my dear friend. My agenda is truth, even if that truth causing us to rethink as well as be forced to change what was before thought to be the truth. If we cannot see where we have been on any journey we cannot and will not see where we are going, that is history's true lesson, and NEED. To allow us to repeat the good and avoid the BAD, most mistakes by us all happen from ignoring historical facts. To many today say "Oh history is boring, pointless, happened so long ago" Yet forget the pretty new laptop, Iphone or android phone such comment's are shared to the world with were made possible by that which we call history. Keep up your work my wise open minded, truth seeking brother... they eyes of the one that are opened can very well equal a chain reaction of thousands of eyes being opened.... And in irony that is yet another fact of ye ole history to the fans of it and those who still think it boring, well it will not lie to you, only opinion and long held belief will cause the bending of truth's as we hauamns so all very much like to place on something that needing changing the moment it began to happen. The "Bone war's" known so very well to Paleontology and history in ALL forms is the perfect and sad outcome.....but slowly over time not so quickly and brick wall to car at 70 kph lol :) I hope this sparks a spark for you as it did me, keep the truth coming, this world needs more like you. Wisdom and intelligence are nothing without truth in both. Even when I have my opinion's did not keep me watching, and your facts and evidence have always put me on the same page as you are on. This skill we NEED my friend,, and forgive me but I will post this twice, here and in main comments, just in case you get tired of the disagreeing parties ranting away, for this historical/genetic fact is important to anyone with :)

When I was at school (11-16year old) we had a great English teacher. I was sent to a catholic school and in an English lesson he was asked why is it called “spelling” (to make words from letters) that’s magic and that’s not Christian. His response always stuck with me: it’s the perfect word to describe what you’re doing, you take a letter and string it together to make a word, those words make sentences, paragraphs and books. Knowledge can be spread and translated bringing enlightenment or challenging concepts all through the art or putting letters together... now isn’t that a magical thing.
12 year old me.... mind blown 🤯

RE: Spell (From Spellan : to speak)
      spell (n.1)
Old English spell "story, saying, tale, history, narrative, fable; discourse, command," from Proto-Germanic *spellam (see spell (v.1)). Compare Old Saxon spel, Old Norse spjall, Old High German spel, Gothic spill "report, discourse, tale, fable, myth;" German Beispiel "example." From c. 1200 as "an utterance, something said, a statement, remark;" meaning "set of words with supposed magical or occult powers, incantation, charm" first recorded 1570s; hence any means or cause of enchantment.
The term 'spell' is generally used for magical procedures which cause harm, or force people to do something against their will -- unlike charms for healing, protection, etc. ["Oxford Dictionary of English Folklore"]

Arith: UPDATE: This just isn't true Arith. This isn't a writing system. The consensus is, and has been, that these symbols, common across europe, have some sort of meaning. Runes are not of european origin. Writing didn't develop in europe because we lacked the dense production of irrigated flood river valleys, that were easily ruled and taxed by small armies. Writing evolves from symbols and accounting of inventory, debts and taxes. The evolution of the runes backward into europe is something we have know for a long time.
We need the reconstruction of our history, and our natural religions, and our emotional attachment to our people, ancestors, traditions. Your interpretation of our religion is excellent. You produce a coherence from scarc records and creative interpretation. But hou mix exceptional content with falsehood. But too many of you who are producing this content cross the line into nonsense.
    Thanks.

Arith, I really enjoy your videos. I think you bring to the academic world a spiritual understanding that a lot of scholars lack. As a student of history and archeology and amateur linguist, I like to conduct my own independent research. As a Germanic pagan who often uses runes in every day life, this subject is of particular interest to me, however, I cannot for the life of me seem to find any resources regarding these ancient runes. I have studied the symbols often called "proto-writing" by academics dating back over 40,000 years ago, but somehow the source material for these runes eludes me. I'm honestly not sure how I have gone this long without hearing of this.
In short, any help in the matter would be greatly appreciated. Could you please link me some credible resources so that I may study these symbols some more on my own? Online resources or books are fine. I am just here to learn.
    Tusen takk in advance.

Thanks for the video. Please note that the bibliography that you added in the end of the video does not include any original peer-reviewed scientific archaeological study pertaining Alvao runes. I'd appreciate if you could provide one example, because I was not able to find any so far. Also, according to an archeology book published in NY in 1996, those runes were simply "faked artifacts" (Page: 95 : Nationalism and Archaeology in Europe, eds: Margarita Díaz-Andreu, Timothy Champion - NY-1996). I am curious to hear your opinion about that.

    • @ArithHärger
      @ArithHärger  3 года назад

Perfectly understandable. Indeed for almost a century they have been taken as forgeries, as during the late 19th century there was a lot of amateur archaeology being done all over Europe, and with the rise of Nationalism and the fervent need to find a cultural identity, most of archaeology was prey to the political movements of the time. Every country was doing their forgeries, UK, Germany and Sweden most of all (including rune engravings). So there was a very suspicious atmosphere and no one was believing in anything found in archaeology because almost everybody was making forgeries to legitimise their political claims even to territories. I myself did not believe very much in the Alvão script/runiform to be real, until I started my degree in History and Archaeology first, and was taken to see the runes on the walls of a cave which I thought my professors at the time were playing with me as they knew I was interested in runes and had been into runology for some time before archaeology. They are real, the ones from the cave, they have approximately 5000-6000 years. However, there's still the case of the ones on artefacts which are in exposition in the Archaeological Museum of Vila Real, Portugal. Those were indeed thought to be forgeries until quite recently. Due to the vast fascist-nationalist politics rotting away the core of past archaeology, many subjects were left untouched and forgotten and the Alvão runiforms/scripts remained untouched and forgeries. Fortunately, back in 2018 this caught the attention of National Geographic, and they have written extensive about the Alvão script. This caught the attention of many people, including myself. We just need to wait until we all get back to certain subjects that have been in the shadows for too long and return to the study and written extensively about it. The Alvão script has been finally considered to be real back in the 2010s. I will return to this subject eventually with more information and new sources. As soon as I may I will also visit the Archaeological Museum at Vila Real (being an archaeologist gives me free pass hehehe) but sadly do to covid many things got postponed. But I shall return to it. Just a little more patience. I do understand what you are saying and I have been in the same position, and now it'squite frustrating trying to deliver information about it and show that it is the real thing. It isn't easy but I believe we shall get there. It took me a long long time and a lot of study to be convinced they were real too.

Excellent video. You might find it interesting to know the gulf-stream that runs near the western coast of Scandinavia allowed ancient “Scandinavians” to dwell in at least two locations in present-day Norway during the last Ice Age. That's why Hel was worshiped, since the concept of Hel reflected the “hell” i.e. the rock/mountain (in Swedish, hell still means “surface of rock”, for example Helleberget which means Mountain of Hel, and the ancient phrase “hel och ren” which means “healthy and clean”.) Also, it should be noted tha caves in the mountains during Ice Age living conditions protected humans, and kept them “healed”. Hence the (in the minority) accepted theory (amongst a few Swedish, Norwegian, and Finnish scholars) exist that the northern people of Hel gave its name to Hel-vetica, Hel-las, and Hel-ios (helios is Greek for the sun, a primary source of healing to any sane man or woman!)
When the ice in ancient/northern Scandinavia melted, the people trapped behind the ice are believed to have migrated southwards (there are some etymological connections with the Basque culture, where a number of root words are shared with the ancient people of “Hel”. Finally, it should be noted that is not coincidence that placenames in Scandinavia still bear the old name of “mother earth” namely Hel-singborg, Hel-singland, Hel-sinki, and so on.

So far I found it plausible that Etruscan ,,writings,, originated more likely from Vinčan writings (since they are almost the same) than from Phoenician. I wonder because Vinča culture is suposed to be dated back to ca. 5500bc. I hope you could give me your thoughts on that aspect of the topic if possible, cheers!

Hmmm... then how come (*hagalaz in runes) is not pronounced /o/ as in the Iberian scripts? is supposed to come from Phoenician , which on the Greece-side of the Mediterranean gets interpreted as /h/ or /e/, but on the Iberian side as /o/. Why isn't the rune with the name *othala? NOTE: I've been attempting to research this for YEARS... the problem has always been a lack of sources.] Are you trying to say that runes descend from Iberian cave art which descends from an African tradition that goes back to the beginning of Homo sapiens and is the same tradition perhaps that Egyptian hieroglyphs ultimately come from - which, later, developed its own cuneiform* system which spread northwestwards, while in the meantime eastwards came the lineal writing style - that is, the runic or rune-form - to replace the cuneiform* because it's easier? And if all that is true (no idea if it really is), then would it not be possible to take a list of typical cave-art designs - ones repeated around the world consistently through the ages (like in the book by Genevieve von Petzinger) - and say that this or that letter, or this or that rune, seems to ultimately descend from this or that sign that is still used by any people who has preserved the tradition of cave art, such as the Australian aborigines? But the time-period is so vast that I think what I'm writing is too speculative and therefore I am tempted to erase it before anyone is misled. But I'll leave this blurb here, so hopefully people can add their thoughts.
*which did not exist, there was no Greek cuneiform. maybe what you are talking about is a tradition of inscribing letters in a certain way that was passed down by stone- and metal-workers to their apprentices, that went eastwards? Are we talking about a style of writing or a writing system? Unclear. Are the runes actually their own writing system, or a style of writing imposed on writing systems?

I don't quite agree with the terminology. After all, runes are a Germanic word for a very specific Germanic script, not just any such writing at all. That is, I think that the word "runes" would be more correct to apply precisely in the context of the Germanic runic writing. Although I certainly do not argue about the origin of this letter. For comparison - no one calls pirates "Vikings", for example, because of some similarities.

Basques are certainly not Indo-European, and not Iberian either, and there are some doubts that Basques are even of European origins, but this last point I don't quite agree. Maybe Basques are the very few surviving descendents of an older Western civilization, such as this one in this video. It remains to be seen - still under study. If so, that makes them actualy European, or rather, the "original" Europeans before Eastern civilizations advanced into Europe.

Although it is indeed an intriguing hypothesis, it doesn't appear to have a solid scientific foundation, at least I haven't been able to find reliable scientific sources supporting your claims. As far as I've been able to find out, the information regarding Alvão artifacts is scarce, to put it mildly. First of all, the dating is highly questionable. Apparently, the inscriptions were carbon dated to somewhere between 17,000 and 6,000 years BCE, and I'm not even sure how you can apply carbon dating to a piece of stone, but I'm not an archaeologist, so let's say it can be done; but still, such inaccurate dating is not a good base for any assumptions. Furthermore, the inscriptions were apparently made by a metal tool, which definitely puts their origin in Upper Paleolithic out of question. Paleo-Hispanic scripts shown by you in the video are linked by scholars in the field to either Phoenician or Greek writing systems, according to my knowledge. Even the location of said artifacts is difficult to pinpoint. Apparently, some are in museums or private collections, and some have been lost. This is all quite suspicious. To me, it looks more like a hoax, than a genuine thing. Again, I don't know much about the subject, so it would be very nice if you could provide reliable sources (which you, unfortunately, didn't).
Also, you said that haplogroup R1b originated in Western Europe, but as far as I'm aware, this particular haplogroup is associated with Proto-Indoeuropean speakers of Yamnaya and Corded ware cultures, which, according to a widely accepted theory, originated somewhere in Pontic-Caspian steppe, not in Iberian Peninsula.
And one more thing: I think it is inaccurate to call Paleo-Hispanic or, indeed, Alvão inscriptions (provided they are genuine at all) *runic*. I believe the word "rune" should only be used when referencing Germanic writing script, since the word itself is Germanic in origin. Paleo-Hispanic scripts and others, like Old Turkic script, should be called "rune-like", or something like that, because otherwise we're creating confusion by mixing up vastly different writing systems.

What a wonderful video - thank you so much, your teaching style is really great - I was spellbound ! I arrived here because I have been following Ancient history of all sorts, but primarily the story of the Welsh peoples, and I have learned so much about how the Western seaboard was the natural 'pathway' in ancient times, so that there was always a lot of trade & movement of peoples using the sea since travel overland was more difficult because of the heavily forested territory & also the difficulty of traveling thru multiple tribal areas. This knowledge of how writing of an actual language arose ties right in with the claims of the Welsh to their ancient roots & their written language, which is being re-discovered recently, as it had been deliberately removed from daily use by the English ruling class.
