What I found helpful is to have a positive mindset. I was not feeling pain, I was feeling gain. And I felt a lot of gain!!!! The gain hurts but knowing that that it was progress instead of concentrating on the hurt in the hear and now. Mentally convert that to hurt to something positive. And stay away from people that complain about the pain. Hearing others complain will make make our pain worse.
My 2nd one will be in 30 days. All agree with what you just said. My wisdom- I was 53 when I had my first one. I figured the 1 month of ‘hell’ that I heard about didn’t apply to me since I was so young. My expectations were so high that I couldn’t give myself a break. That lead to a huge meltdown-my poor husband! But it did get better and I really had an awesome outcome. So much so that I tell people it was my best decision of my life. My advice hang in there, give yourself some love, do your pt and don’t be a hero!
I suggest your channel to everyone I come in contact with who is or might be facing knee replacement. You were and continue to be a valuable resource and an encouragement to those of us who have went through this and in all likelihood will be facing it with my other knee. I had surgery on 6/3 and feel like I have my life back. I can exercise daily and got to get back in the mountains of Tn. and was able to hike 6 miles on the Appalachian Trail with no negative side effects . When people ask me how it’s doing I tell them it feels better than any other part of my 52 year old body...lol. Keep doing what your doing, you are a blessing and are helping more people than you will ever realize.
This comment is the best possible gift I could have received before I go to bed for the night. Truthfully. Your encouragement and kind words have made me unspeakably happy. And AMAZING that you have done so much so soon. Kudos to you!
I'm a year behind you. Going for Bilateral on July 14, 2022. I pray for annoutcome like you've got. I know life has a lot more to experience than these current battle knees have to offer. So... how are they doing now ?
@@MrPjcrews You’ll do great just push yourself through the therapy. I do great, I still weight lift and am able to do about any cardio that I choose. I am cautious with it and avoid high impact exercises. Best of wishes to you!
Toni, I wanted you to know that on 9/11/20 my husband an I were hit practically head on by a vehicle that pulled out to pass in a no passing zone (double, solid, yellow lines) straight into our lane directly into us. We were in our 4 yr old Toyota Highlander. Other driver was in a 20 yr old, Acura sedan. He had a revoked license and no insurance. Our SUV flipped 3 1/2 times (according to eyewitnesses), coming to rest upside down, leaving us hanging upside down by our seatbelt harnesses! My husband has a broken clavicle, broken, scapula, and 6 broken ribs. I have dislocated 2 ribs which are possibly cracked with separation. Praise God, my new knee is fine! It’s a miracle we are alive!
I underwent a knee joint replacement about two weeks ago. I made the decision after I worked all possible solutions so that I would not perform the operation. I took the decision after my knee almost stopped moving, and after that I knew that I was in danger. , I asked God for guidance, and I decided the operation, and I am not Regretting , I am waiting to recover my full strength to do the second
I had knee #1 done in August of 2020, #2 done March 22 of 2021. I am getting around pretty good now with just a cane to help with balance. You must get up and get going..do find things to interest you through out the day. Your attention span will be short because of the pain so have several things to help occupy you. I spend a lot of time on youtlube learning things.
Mine is coming on Nov 19th. I like GabrielsTears mantra "I feel gain". This is my third knee surgery (two ACLs and a meniscus trim). With my first ACL 38 years ago, I was never able to get more than 13 degrees extension. I am really looking forward to being able to straighten my Left leg. Other preps: 1) Stocked up on ice pads 2) Got a TENS machine (and practiced using it) 3) I have been practicing the techniques to get off the floor 4) Got an ice therapy machine (the kind that you put ice and water in, and pumps around the knee) 5) Built a cushion/pillow to really elevate my leg while laying down. 6) Got temporary permission from my HOA to park in front of my unit instead of down the steps in the garage.
Tony...im 68 male...having double knee replacement Nov 10...i find you and your channel a valuable resource to prepare myself of what's to come...thank you
this channel is one of the ways to prepare....to do exercises before your procedure, to be kind to yourself, patient and to keep moving. The pain does get better with time....this is where you need to be patient and realistic. It takes time...time...time.
I’m trying to be positive for my upcoming TKR. I’m thinking of the gain of no more grinding, no more bone on bone, my knee will no longer give out on me. I hope to prep some meals before 10/27. 2 neighbors are there for help. Friend taking me to and from hospital. My daughters will help from afar. They are in the medical field so we practice social distancing with mask. I’m sending my 2 dogs for the 1st week to doggy care. I’m prepping knee now as much as I can with pre-op exercise. Staying positive is key :)
Haha! Perfect timing - right knee revision is tomorrow! No matter what I have gone through (its been a year! :-) every day I am still glad I had it done.
Hi I really didn’t do a lot of mental prep for my double or btkr surgery n got a bit of a shock with the pain. BUT did have a support plan. My daughter stayed with me n was a great help with emotional n physical support eg driving me to appointments n cooking. Beautiful friends one of them cleaned my home every week, took me out n told me to find a hobby lol. Have listened to your vids v helpful n joined an Aussie Fb group cause you need some local info sometimes (even though that can vary between states). Give in to the tears n have a good physio. Surgeon states I’m on track good rom 105 each leg n today marks week 6. Aiming on going back to work in a week’s time n can’t wait.
Hello T and KR Fam! Let me tell you, Tony has helped me adjust more than anyone! I was not mentally prepared for such a compound surgery. Because of my athleticism, I was told recovery would be a piece of cake for me. Well, news flash! It was very difficult, especially after COVID19 disrupted my therapy sessions. But that was seven months ago and I'm doing just fine! Even played tennis last weekend...very delicately, lol. Many thanks to first, Christ and to you, Tony, my therapist😊
Having total knee replacement next Monday Oct. 26th..thanks so much for all the tips. I will be watching you a lot, as I recover. You have really been helpful...I really appreciate you!
Great Guy, clear explanations. I’m 83yrs, had TKR eight months ago. I swam and used walking machine to strengthen muscles above knee, I honestly feel it helped after operation. I’m also a non smoker and non drinker, so feel those things in my favour to recovery. I’m back to swimming each morning, which must surely my aid my general health as well. The old saying of ‘move it or lose it’ certainly applies after a TKR. If sitting, it stiffens up, if walking, I forget I’ve ever had it replaced. Good luck and best wishes to all who are contemplating having a replacement. Do it, and get it over with! 😅
I'm concentrating on recovery with the support of my dogs and son who, by the way, lives in Texas. Noone else has really helped because it was, "too overwhelming" for them. I'm progressing good, need to not overdo to keep the swelling down. 😊 I read, watch sports on TV. So far, so good. And Tony, you are the best PT 👍👍😊
I am an artist and I was painting everyday up until my surgery cant wait to get back into it. I try all kinds of things, but because of the pain, it is hard to focus on much of anything for very long. But at least try to find things to interest you to keep your mind of the pain and anxiet;y of wanting to be back to normal.
12 weeks out now from 2nd TKR, No more pain, going to work in two weeks. I keep exercising on my stationary bike. I do have some night pain where my legs feel hot. A little ice pack and elevation will cure the problem I am excited about getting my RUclips channel back up. I believe that keeping the mind off the pain is so helpful. Find things to do. Keep your mind busy and also get lots of rest.
Listening to you has given me lots to contemplate. I have a positive attitude, what I think is a good support system & a goal to be back on my horse by Dec. Just knowing every situation is different also helps. My surgeon has done many many knees & that reassures me also. Learning the exercises before the pain is also good & prayer. Thank you for caring about all of us!!
Your videos has been a TKR lesson for me. Your lessons help give me the courage to say "I got this". Your channel and other self help TKR channels, plus my OS and her amazing staff with great communicate and customer care, TKR Zoom class, took lots of notes, asked many questions, 2 months before surgery I did myself PT at home. I must say I did my homework because I made the decision to request and follow up on having TKR. 🙏🙏🙏 After 5 years or more the pain let me know it wasn't going away so I made the decision TKR left one first. As I type this message now it's 6 weeks in for me and I'm doing very good. Lessons from RUclips, my PT, OS and staff. 3 more weeks of outpatient PT along with my own @ home PT. This TKR journey has been a blessing, interesting and challenging, sometimes difficult but with more challenging moments that led to "I am determined". A medical lesson for me and my TKR. I have no regrets, so happy and blessed I made this decision. 🙏🙏🙏 "Still a long ways to go" so working on complete healing and then prepare for my RTKR. 🙏🙏🙏 Amen!
Get a power recliner, I couldn't get comfortable in a normal chair after the op, get a sports bag you can throw over your shoulder to bring things out of the kitchen, drink plenty of water you don't want to get dehydrated, get one of them grabbers you can pick things up with.
Excellent video! Thank you! No one can prepare you totally. The worst part is the healing time. A support system is key but most of those closest to us try but don't really get it. The one line support group can be very helpful!
I'm 5 weeks pre-op and so far my plans include a lot of reading and movie/TV watching, plus learning how to knit following my daughter's on line videos that are intended for her first grade virtual students. If they can do it, so can I!
I had both knees replaced in June. I'm 69, healthy, happy and I considered myself active. Don't define that as someone who exercised, jogged or did anything besides care for my home and garden, camp and day hike (sometimes) on relatively level ground. If I were doing this over I would definitely exercise for 3 to 6 months before surgery to strengthen quads, hammies, core, arms. There are a bazillion exercises I could have done that would not have caused more pain in my arthritic knees that would have helped prepare me for physical therapy. I recommend classic stretching with Miranda Esmonde-white (on PBS) to lengthen and tone those leg, butt and back muscles and loosen up hip and shoulder joints. I'm doing fine 3 months post surgery but the recovery would have been easier if I'd embarked on a stretch, tone and flex regime well before surgery. I know I will continue these forever.
Be prepared about how your surgeon plans postop pain control. Is he focused on one week of opioids or will he refill your prescription based on your needs. Since my surgery I have mistakenly weaned myself too soon since surgery and my pain has impeded my progress in rehab and doing my home therapy. Get a concrete answer before surgery.
I had TKR on my left knee on 31/08/2020. A little pain after the op. No pain after that apart from doing rehab exercises. I have had no problems sleeping. Recovery going well. I can walk without crutches after 4 weeks ( short distances). Before surgery I was fit, non-smoker,non drinker with no underlying conditions. I was lucky
I am half way through this and madder than hell. I am apparently the only one ever NOT to have a support group or even one support person. I am 80...family & friends all gone. One neighbor, not remotely hopeful. I cannot even hire home help. I have transportation I can hire, incredibly costly. And I have a knee that is shot. Must get it replaced. The assumption that everyone has someone leaves me in tears and feeling like a failure before my surgery. The surgeons around here are so booked that the hospital dispensed with pre-surgery classes. Assembly line. I am doing everything but hired transportation 100% alone and it is so hard to get doctors, medical staff to understand what that means. It doesn't occur to this channel, either.
What I found helpful is to have a positive mindset. I was not feeling pain, I was feeling gain. And I felt a lot of gain!!!! The gain hurts but knowing that that it was progress instead of concentrating on the hurt in the hear and now. Mentally convert that to hurt to something positive.
