  • It's known as the "most exclusive" restaurant in New York City with the "toughest reservation" to secure. But this week, Rao's just got a little more accessible. NBC New York’s Ray Villeda reports.

    For those who never heard of this Rest back in the 70'80's it used to be a mob gathering kind of place as well for well known celebrities. Many nyovies where even film around there as well.

      Arent they all? Doesnt detract from the history of the food. Rao’s is truly special. These are old family recipes. From tomatoes they have grown in southern italy volcanic soils... every family has some form of mob. Every family in america. Its about the food.

    "super limited edition specialty meal sets" talk about pretentious. This guy was probably up all morning practicing. Almost said it wrong too.

    They make the absolute best tomato sauce sold in grocery stores. It’s not even close.

      It used to be even better. When they first started jarring sauces. They were the fruitiest sauce. I had no idea tomatoes could taste like that. Ill never forget. While they are still the best. The mass production has had a lowering of their initial quality

    Wow so this is where the famous sauce comes from

    • @applejacks8160
      @applejacks8160 3 года назад

      No. It comes from a commissary kitchen, rented out by the restaurant. They make the sauce in giant batches compared to what is most likely made in house.
      Scaling up ingredients like that rarely leads to consistently keeping the same flavor as something made in smaller amounts.

      The sauce is delicious and with less sugar than the popular brands. It’s more expensive but I stock up when it’s on sale.

    Blah another gentrified area has ruined the feel of this place along with alot of places in New York City. Trust me its not worth it in the end. Way to go America.

    Rao's will not make it in it's current form. They will survive by selling in grocery stores. Hopeful they will move to a dine in location in Florida . It would be packed every night.

    So, so, SO many have fallen under the spell of the HYPE! Exclusivity does not Quality make. Lemon chicken is charred, bleh DRY, DRY, DRY! Meatballs pretty good, & Marinara pretty good. Their bottled sauces are average to below average. Better to start with a can of DOP San Marzano tomatoes and make your own sauce which will only take 10-15 minutes longer than just pouring average sauce into a pot! Pasta alla Vodka well here's the thing, if you turn your penne into a barely edible mushy paste, there's nothing al dente about Rao's preparation and it's a CRIME against pasta!!! Vodka sauce not even up to below average, it's just a marinara with some cream in it again BLEH! As far as this cook is concerned, and I make ALL of these dishes and more, from scratch in the traditional ways, Rao's is unimpressive (for ALL the hype, price and difficulty in getting a reservation) and that's putting layers of lipstick on this PIG! There are wonderful REAL Italian restaurants in NY and not so hard to find, nor IMPOSSIBLE to get into! San Carlo Osteria Piemonte or Portale to name just two of MANY!
