- G'day Guys and Gals!
In this video i show you all the steps involved in fitting a Safari Snorkel to your Isuzu MU-X or D-MAX. It is very similar installation however for most 4wd's and the instructions supplied with the safari snorkel will specify all the tools and sizes of holes etc. The snorkel will also come with all templates necessary for the installation.
You will need a few parts and tools to be able to carry out this job they are -
-Stepper drill bit that goes up to 16mm
-hole saw bit 111mm
-drill
-die grinder and die bits
-sandpaper
-biscuit wheel
-touch up pain - same colour as car
-round file
-assorted ratchets, sockets and spanners
-trim/plastic rivet removal tool
-tape
-marker pen
-screwdrivers
-Sika flex sealant
They are the main tools and extra parts you will require : )
The installation begins by removing the Isuzu MU-X air box, inner guard liner and intake pipe that sits inside the inner guard. Double check the template aligns perfectly with the snorkel.
You then need to tape up the guard and put the template onto the guard. Using a marker pen, mark out your holes and remove the template.
Then using the stepper drill, drill out the holes to 16mm and a pilot hole for your hole saw hole.
Use the 111mm hole saw to drill out the large snorkel intake hole and then de-burr all of your holes. Test fit the snorkel with the bolts in and tape and mark your A pillar trim mount. Then drill out your A pillar trim mount holes to 8mm and de-burr holes.
You need to then enlarge the hole on the inner guard where the standard intake pipe goes through. Using the template supplied mark out and die grind out the hole to the larger diameter and test fit the intake pipe. Clean down all metal swarf and use your touch up paint to seal up all of the bare metal.
While the paint is drying you need to modify the intake pipe into the airbox. Remove the pre-spinner pipe and disassemble. Remove the ridge on the pipe and sand completely flat and then reassemble using sika flex sealant to make the intake to the airbox completely water tight. Seal up the drain bungs on the bottom of the airbox with sika flex as well.
Now its time to fit the snorkel, intake pipe and airbox back to the vehicle and double check everything is water tight. Now just chuck your inner guard liner back in and you can stand back and admire your awesome handy work!

Well-done! This vid is missing all of the cursing that I would be doing if it were my install. Something about drilling massive holes into the body panel of my truck makes me hella nervous.
Impressive bud, and you're balls are much larger than most to take this job on! Sending mine to the dealer for this, but at least I'll be able to prime them with some questions on the thoroughness of the install. Thanks man
Thank you - Because of your detail video I was able to install Safari snorkel by myself on my brand new LSU :)
Awesome work! Glad i could help :)
Great video mate, just fitted a safari snorkel to my Dmax. Wasn't too confident about hacking up my panels till I watched your vid. Keep up the good content.
Cheers Peter! Great to hear!
Exactly what I was looking for great channel bro keep up the good work. Enjoyed you getting the snorkel on 👍
solid job Nick, she'll be breathing great now!
Good job Nick! You're a braver man than me with a brand new car. Cheers Steve
Haha it is a little bit nerve racking drilling that first hole :P
Good job Nic, nice vid. Good to watch a Snorkel install from go to whoa. Thanks for sharing. 😊
i doubt i will ever do a snorkel install, but if i do i'll remember this video, thanks mate
Great and informative video. I would have liked to of seen how the bolts attach to the A pillar as you obviously can’t use conventional nuts.
Hey Will, the Safari snorkel comes with 3 little plastic expanding screw inserts. You drill your hole out, touch it up and then put in the 3 inserts into the holes and then just screw the bracket over the top 😊
Wow mate you are really awesome and talented guy this was just simple and easy! Thank you!
Thanks alot 😊
Nice job....the car is looking good. Enjoying the build. What’s next ? Bullbar? My bet is an X-Rox
Thanks Michael 😊 bullbar is coming up soon, theres a few little things before that though 😋
Great vid mate. Now I am worried if I have someone install it that they won't be as fastidious as you bro.
great job Nick :) you got a new subscriber (from Perth). Cheers, Don (Dons Shed and Xplor Overland)
Thanks Don! Glad you enjoyed 😊
Good stuff mate, can't wait to see more MUX content 🤙🏾🤙🏾
You must of save alot of $$$ do most jobs yourself, great video i wish i have that skills

Quality bro, been hanging out for the next installment of LowRangeNick, now you made it I can finally fit this sucker and get it out out of me lounge room 😄
Haha! Im glad i could help :D I'm sure it will look better on your 4x4 than in the lounge room :P
The work is very clean. Update some turbo for v cross also.
Awesome video mate. Keep up the good work
Another great video👍
Top job what ever you do you do very well
Thanks Dave!
I was waiting this step from you for long time 👍
Great explanation, very handy, just wonder did you use Sikaflex 227 Automotive Sealant?
Thanks
Yes, the Automotive sealant is what I used.
@@LowRangeNick thanks mate, I just installed my Safari snorkel on isuzu, keep doing videos, well done!
Hi Nick, great work, any chance of doing a vid on fitting a turbo boost guage, please. Keep up the absolutely great work
Great install vid! I wouldn't have have sealed the drain valves on the airbox though. Rain sometimes moves past the ram intake at the top and gets into the airbox. The DA (Ducks Ass) valves on the airbox let water out but not in. Blocking them might lead to a water pooling issue if you were driving in heavy rain for a few hours.
I am an isuzu tech and install these regularly. We leave them unsealed for this reason also.. never had an issue
Could attach a drain line with clear pipe like on the provent catch cans. That way it's sealed as well as catching pooled water
@@jakelino4482 the drains remove the need for this though? They are a one way valve. They let water out but not in?
proper job!!! WELL DONE
Covered suspension and tyres but forgot intake pipe. Nice work
Huh??
Thinking the same thing.
Sad if he does it for a living 🤣
Pls make a video on how to clean egr, throttle body and intake manifold of mux .thnk u. New subscriber here
good, fine job
Nice really considering an MU-X and nice to know what I could do on it! That music feels like I’m wtchin Goonsquad throw in a ‘damn son’ from the US!
Nice job
Awesome vid well done.
Well explained ! Cheers
Hey man, good job with the snorkel install. Could you possibly do a How to video on fender flare install? There's nothing out there for Isuzu fender flare installs. Cheers.
Hey man ! Thanks for watching! Do you meen like fitting extended flares? I probably wont fit any if thats the case because the tyres dont stick out of the guards.😊👍
@@LowRangeNick that's ok. Thank you for taking the time to reply. Keep the cool videos coming. Awesome content.
Great video I wonder if A** do it the right way this way? I had **B fit my Safari and after seeing your video im now wondering if they did every thing you have shown in this video
very nicely done mate, maybe the tube hole on the engine side could have been a little larger
Wow 😮 I’ve been waiting for this
If you block up the water drains, I'd also advise to reverse the snorkel inlet - to keep out rain. If it was me, I'd leave the drains as is - they are meant to be one way valves.
No need to reverse the snorkel ram head as the ram head disperses the water via slots to the outside of the snorkel so it doesnt go down into the airbox 😊
thanks guys for this insight and especially to you nick. I also have one but just wondering, does that mean you have to cover the snorkel head every time you wash the car?
Nice work.
Nice one❤
Good day nick, do you have plan to replace your snorkel's ram head to precleaner like sy-klone?
thanks
i have a colorado 7, and have just got this kit, suprised the holes are drilled out so big considering the studs are only 8 or 10mm
It's so you can get all of the bolts in the holes with the angle of the guard and also have a little movement to align correctly with guard.
Well done mate
Nicely done Nick. If water does get in through the intake, during rain etc. where does it go? Maybe a stop cock would have been a good addition rather than blocking of the water outlet valve(s)? I don't know, just wondering.
Hey Benny! The Safari Snorkel Ram head separates the water and directs it down and out of the snorkel head via slots. If you google safari snorkel ram head rain and go to images there is a few pictures demonstrating how it works : )
@@LowRangeNick I did chase it up as suggested, but came across this too ruclips.net/video/ebzn5oTU_EQ/видео.html admittedly extreme spraying a hose straight in but the water flows straight into the air box.
@@Bennyboy-dog Those drain holes clog up with shit anyway and stop the drainage. No-one ever serviced them, ever :) When they get a bit older they go hard and don't seal anyway. That airbox is one of the biggest lower chambers I've seen, would hold 3 litres before becoming a problem.
@@einfelder8262 That's a good point Ein, the water will evaporate over time, just by sitting in the stream of air coming from the snorkel.
@@Bennyboy-dog I dont really think that video is a very good test, the amount of pressure behind that hose would never be replicated by rain. 😋 It is totally up to the installer at the end of the day, so if you dont want to seal them up that is totally up to you 😊
Good vid, what about the air bag in the door pillar when you drill there ?
There are a couple of skins to the pillar. You only drill through the outer body layer, it doesn't come any were near it. Just don't drill all the way through the 4 panels through the airbag haha! Just drill through one layer. 😂
muy buen trabajo .
estoy emocionado . de todo el trabajo en tu isuzu mux.
quiero un carro similar
Muchas gracias por mirar! Eso es emocionante, ¡el isuzu mu-x es un gran 4wd!
Have you still got your new car smell Nick? Hehe, great videos man.
Haha only when i put the "new car smell" air fresheners in it 😋
There are over 90 different Sikaflex products. Which specific one did you use here and why?
great job mate, where did u get your orange radiator hoses from? can I by online. Cheers
Thanks mate! The orange hoses are intercooler hoses. They are standard on the mu-x 2018 model. You could probably get them from an isuzu dealer 😊👍
you need to paint the hole with kil rust and silicone or rust will build up
Nick good stuff mate from a fellow You Tuber I like your clear and precise approach. One question, I see the Genuine Isuzu kit is quite competitive in pricing, however the kit does not come with instructions, any thoughts? Cheers Bruce in Perth WA
Awesome 👍💪😍
great vid. thanks
If we close the drain valve and if snorkel sucks in some water like in rain, how will it drain? What are the drawbacks of keeping the drain valve open?
Awesome work mate. Do you need to sikaflex the intake pipe connections between the snorkel and the air box?
Hey Brodie! You can if you like, but the rubber pipe is soft and tightens down with 2 hose clamps so it should form a water tight seal. So it isnt necessary. 😊
Hi I have a 2020 Isuzu dmix when the caravan is connected the and the brakes are applied the reverse camera comes on and the engine light and anti skid light comes on these 2 lights stay on.
Thanks for the video - I'm getting a snorkel fitted soon, what do you recommend I double check with the installer as far as his installation goes?
Probably just make sure they seal everything with sika flex or a good quality silicone sealant and they seal up the drains in the airbox. Other than that just that they touch up all the holes with paint. Maybe supply them with some colour coded paint if you are pedantic like me 😊👍
@@LowRangeNick Thanks, though considering you'll never see the touch ups, colour isn't too important! Going through your back catalogue, what caused ur switch from a Landcruiser to a new IFS Isuzu?
@@anthonywhitney634Reliability was a big factor in the switch to something newer. Also economy and comfort for long trips. Loads more power and torque for towing. Handling and safety is top notch.
Hi Nick
do you know where to locate the turbo drain flange on the turbo of the MUX i have looked everywhere but can't find it apparently mine is leaking bait
do you run a egr blank plate as well as the provent 200
Hey mate, where did you get your touch up paint? There doesn't appear to be any available here locally (PH). I need silky pearl white (531) badly!
Hey there i just went to my local auto store and got them to match it to the paint colour. Most stores that do touch up paint will be able to help you out like repco, super cheap auto, autobarn etc. 😊
@@LowRangeNick Thanks mate! Sadly not even the Mux group that I joined knows where to get one locally ,and the only option I had was from Germany. Hopefully the store you mentioned are willing to export their goods. :p
Hey mate, Great videos
Is that the v-spec safari snorkel?
Thanks Todd! Yep it is the V-spec.
@@LowRangeNick V-Spec ?
@@xym54 Just what they call the standard snorkel.
Are you going to put on judge bar or bull bar?
Heya! Yeah i am going to put a bull bar on just have to save up a bit of coin and then ill be set 😊😊😊
LowRangeNick oh cool 😎
Hey nick compare the ARB bar to the others, it is a much nicer design. Look forward to seeing you fit that. Next you need exhaust and a remap. Very interested to see that episode. Cheers
@@NXAussie500 Heya! Im not a huge fan of how far the Arb bar sticks out and the headlight hoops dont follow the line of the lights. So ill probably be fitting an AFN bullbar 😊 I think they look great. I have also already fitted a unichip and tuned it. You can check that out in my other video 😊 Cheers 😀
Never heard of AFN so checked em out. errrr if you like that then have a look at the TJM instead. Mine will have ARB.
NICE!!!
Thanks alot! :D
How about the A pillar part?
hi nick, just wanna ask, do you recommend blanking the egr for an isuzu diesel?
Nice work but I don’t think you should block the drain at the bottom of the airbox. If a lot of water gets into the snorkel ( say from driving in torrential rain) it has nowhere to go an may eventually fill the box. Maybe some sort of tap on the drain to allow it to be closed off during deep water crossings but do it’s job of allowing water out under normal conditions.
100% agree, leave drain in place. A cyclonic head on the Safari fixes the bulk of water and dust and insects mostly.
Really great video...except, you didn't show how the top bracket is attached - after you'd drilled the holes up there! Thanks a lot.
Hi Nick,
I am struggling to find what Isuzu label 'Titanium Silver 529', touch up paint, I see you are using Dupli-color, can you let us know what the silver aerosol paint is you are using?
Hey man! Im actually moving house at the moment and all my stuff is at the other joint. I cant remember what the number is. I didn't actually get it perfectly matched i just grabbed one that was close. I asked isuzu about touch up paint but they don't even make one! So id probably recommend going to an auto store that makes up paint and give them your vehicle details they should be able to get you or make you one up thats exactly right. I think autobarn, supercheap are pretty good for it.
Wow..just wow..
I want to know more. I have an Isuzu kb300 2014 model. The wading depth of Isuzu is 500mm because there are electric things low down like the alternator so how will one sort out this because a snorkel is only one part of the vehicle wading depth problem... can you let me know if a snorkel is worth it if there are so many other things that can be effected when going deeper the the recommend wading depth?
Hi there! The snorkel is to raise the air intake which is the main thing that will stop your vehicle when doing water crossings. The water wont cause other engine components to stop working or stall the engine. The only issues people usually have is with prolonged offroad abuse the alternator and electrical things may get dirty and not work as efficiently. But with a snorkel you can safely drive through water over your bonnet and not be too concerned about the engine taking in water and hydrolocking. 👍😊
@@LowRangeNick ok so putting on a snorkel is all I need to do. Great! What about diff breathers?
@@quentinradsma7616 A snorkel and diff breathers are you shouldn't have any issues. Just make sure you thoroughly clean down all the mud and grit off your engine and underbody after each trip to keep everything nice and clean.
Nice video man. I'm about to have my mux this June.
How's your ride now? Does long snorkel affect the air intake of the car? Are you planning on doing egr delete?
Sorry for my bad English coz I'm a Vietnamese lol. Have a great day, looking forward to see more videos about this boy
Thanks alot! It still rides really well with the suspension and bigher tyres. The snorkel will give the engine cleaner and cooler air as well as raising the intake incase of water crossings. I will probably turn the egr off with a munji egr cable. Bet your excited to get your new mu-x 😊
From where you bought that snorkel .please add the link if you bought it from in line market like Amazon or eBay . Sorry my English it so bad 😂😂😂😂
Hey there! You can get the snorkels through safari 4x4 directly or they have lots of dealers all over the place. ARB being tge biggest. You might need to search for your country the best place to buy one. Here is the link to the Australian Website. www.safari4x4.com.au/products/gm-isuzu/isuzu-d-max-mu-x 😊

Thank you
Bull bar next ?
Very soon 😊
👀
Sorry what size and brand of your wheels and tires?
The wheels are Fuel Offroad Rims called Fuel Vectors. The size is 17x8.5 with pos 7.4mm offset. My tyres are Atturo Trailblade M/T in the size 265/70r17 😊👍
Thank you.
After a trip on dirt roads it block my air filter realy bad. Isuzu dmax needs a snorkel just to get clean air.
how to get this safari snorkel for dmax model..?
Very tidy 👍
How to adjust the headlight of mux?
Great video Nick! Which Sikaflex did you use?
Cheers Ian! I used Sikaflex 227 fast curing automotive sealant 😊
How does it drain now you sealed the drain valves in the airbox
Through the Snorkel Ram Head slots. 😊
活干的挺漂亮,打胶的时候是不是带手套,免得密封胶黏在手上,不好清洗。
What about a LSD upgrade for the rear?
Could do! Twin e lockers is what im thinking 😀
That engine cover was a bit different. Is it 1.9 RZ4E engine?
Its a 4jj1 engine. 3.0l turbo diesel 👍
How does the water drain out of box now ??
There shouldnt be water entering the airbox now due to the ram head design. Any small amount that does is evaporated with the heat in the engine bay.
Great video, did you locktite the studs into the snorkel threads? Also, how did you seal the holes in the A pillar.
Hey Viliam, i didnt loctite the threads into the snorkel i figured once pulled tight it should hold the studs in, the nuts that pull the threads through are nyloc though. Ive fitted quiet a few snorkels and never had an issue with the studs coming out. The A pillar is just sealed with the little plastic screw inserts once fitted and pulled tight it seals up the holes. 😊👍
Hi, what about air filter being upgraded?
The factory filter is a good filter designed specifically for the vehicle. Oiled filters like k & n are good but i wouldnt run one in a 4wd due to dust and grime clogging them up faster. With a standard dry filter you can knock dust and other stuff out of the filter easily if necessary. 😊👍
NICE 👍
Ohhh yes man looks mean az
Hell yeah!!! :D
I didn't know James Bonds was here.
Necesito job
Does drill ing into the A pillar affect warrant of fitness, asking from Nz thanks
i want a snorkel so bad but the thought of drilling into my isuzu body freaks me out.
It is a little daunting haha You just have to double check everrything before drilling and youll have no dramas. 😊
I agree I’m shiting my self watching the video
Same here Johan A** fitted mine and now wondering if they have done everything shown in this video
how much to workshops charge?
$300-400
How did you secure the top snorkel bracket to the A-Frame? was it rivnuts?
Hey Zac! I forgot to put that bit in the video. You drill 3 x 8mm holes then you put in 3 little plastic screw insterts which just push in and then screw the bracket on over the top. All the parts are supplied in the safari kit. 😊👍
@@LowRangeNick legend. looking forward to doing me dmax soon. wouldnt be confident to do it without this video

Hi Nick. Love all you videos and they're very informative. I recently had an ironman snorkel installed on my D-Max. I see in your video that you put sealant in the rubber drains of the air filter box to make it waterproof. I haven't done so. Is it recommended? Plus can you tell me what happens to the rain water which can be sucked in while driving in rain especially during torrential monsoon rains.. Does it go out from the drain in the air filter box? It says that the ironman snorkel has rain deflectors but some rain water would definitely get sucked in.
