    Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Gorilla Details:
    Mokolo - born at Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo, he came to Cleveland in 1994. At that time, he joined three younger gorillas to make up Cleveland's Bachelor Group. Eventually, we were left with only 2 gorillas, Mokolo & Bebac, then Bebac died in 2017 (from heart disease-not mentioned in the video). Mokolo is now 36 years old. He is the dad of Kayembe and Kunda. Females were brought to Cleveland starting in the Spring of 2017
    Fredrika (Freddie)- At 49 years old, she is the oldest adult female in the troop. She is Kayembe's surrogate mom She has raised four babies of her own. She came to Cleveland from Zoo Miami in April of 2017.
    Kebi - (Kebi Moyo) she came from The Columbus Zoo & Aquarium in May of 2017. She had her first baby at the age of 8. Kebi's first baby is named Kambera Dupe and she is currently at Zoo Atlanta. Kebi is now 32 years old.
    Nneka - born in San Francisco. She came to Cleveland in April 2018. She gave birth to Cleveland's FIRST baby gorilla in 2021 (a male named Kayembe). She is 25 years old. Nneka's first baby was raised by its grandmother because Nneka did not show any proper maternal care then (San Francisco Zoo). Today, Fredrika is raising Nneka’s second baby, Kayembe. Again Nneka, did not show proper maternal care for this baby either.
    Tusa - she is the smallest and lowest ranking adult in the troop. She arrived in Cleveland in May of 2019 from the Albuquerque BioPark Zoo in New Mexico. Tusa is 32, but has her 33rd birthday on December 2nd. Tusa was hand reared by humans, and she can get very vocal when upset.
    Kayembe - has the honor of being the first baby gorilla born at the Cleveland Zoo. He was born October 26, 2021, and is two years old now. Like most toddlers, he is very active. He plays most often with Fredrika and Nneka. His birth mom is Nneka, dad is Mokolo.
    Kunda - is the second baby gorilla born at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. She was born July 19th 2023. Her mom is Kebi and her dad is Mokolo.
    Jameela - born via c-section to Sekani in Fort Worth Texas zoo. Sekani is 33 years old and Jameela was her 4th baby. Sekani did not accept Jameela after recovering from her c-section. A search for a foster mom led her to Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.

    It's nice to see things going well for Jameela. At the beginning when Freddie is eating, Jameela is tugging Freddie's arm, like "Gimme that,". Seems she may be ready for adult food. lol But what do I know. Sweet video, incredibly awesome to see Jameela happy, loved, and cared about and for. Freddie gets my vote for Mother Of The Millenium, even though she's a foster. Sekani's loss is Freddie's gain.

      I know people will call me crazy, but tI have to say two things:
      #1...The keepers DO communicate with the Gorillas...
      However, if it has been proven, and it has, that we can teach them advanced communication skills with picture boards and the like...isn't there an ethical mandate to educate them accordingly to the highest level possible?
      Just like we have an ethical mandate to educate our own children to the highest level possible?
      #2....The younger (and older) Gorillas have an enrichment plan.
      Shouldn't that enrichment plan go as far as to teach them as much as possible with picture books,
      appropriate toys and lots of videos?
      If they can learn about what the world outside the Zoo looks like, how humans behave within the human environment...maybe slowly over generations we can integrate them into our world safely?
      They will always need protection of course!!
      They are so smart and if we could only help them to communicate then we would know what then want, need, dream about having and all their desires.
      So many ethical questions in my mind.....
      I just want them to have as much autonomy and control in their own lives as "humanly" possible...
      To me their world seems small and so confined.
      The idea that their lives are on display...yeah it's really cool for us!
      But how would they want to live their lives if they could tell us?
      I think we need to know what they WANT and how they want to live their lives and simply honor that.

Kayembe doesn't have to feel jealous thanks to Freedie's excellent mothering skills in making Kayembe feel loved at the same time as Jameela which is a remarkable feat for Mommy Freedie, right? Curious re: Tho months younger, Jameela already seems more agile and interactive than Kunda.
    I'm certainly no expert on gorilla development, but wondering if Kebi's overprotectiveness i.e., refusal to let keepers give Kunda supplemental milk and/or move about much factors into this.
    I'm not implying that Kebi isn't a good mom: she obviously takes her job very seriously. ❤❤

      It’s all good. It will all
      Work out in the end. These gorilla moms instinctively know what their babies need like magic! I’ve seen different styles applied to baby gorilla rearing depending on Moms and their styles (ie highly protective with the baby-a la Genki and Kintaro in Kyoto or a more “free range” Approach - if any viewers are familiar with Tayari and Jabali in Taipei Tayari’s mothering style is more “free range” and independent with son Jabali ) and it all seems to work and the children develop beautifully and healthily. Gorilla and orangutan Moms are incredible!!! I’m in awe of them. 🦍♥️

    • @larrysanimalsafari
      @larrysanimalsafari  5 месяцев назад +2

      Many of us also think the same thing - over protectiveness has resulted in a bit smaller/slower developing young one. That’s just a hunch though. 😁

    • @gorillabff1003
      @gorillabff1003 5 месяцев назад +2

      @@larrysanimalsafari it does indeed seem to cause some delays in some cases. Kintaro for example wasn’t put down on the ground by Genki until he was about 8 months old or so. He was very spindly for a while but once he got active he caught right up with other gorilla babies his age and is today as active and physically developed as any other normal and healthy 5-year-old gorilla. Genki has some neuroses though and is VERY (overly) protective of her baby. Kintaro does fine now though despite the initial setbacks of somewhat delayed physical development as he wasn’t using his supporting muscles until about eight months old.
      Jabali on the other hand was very sturdy by around 4 months of age (or so) because of Tayari’s “free range” mothering approach Time seems to be the great equalizer in these instances. 🦍♥️

    Nneka showed she’s Kayembe’s playmate when she wants to be but she doesn’t show any sign that she accepted Kayembe at his birth. It.just amazing Freddy walked over and picked that premie up like it washers. I think her smelling the newborn smell plus cleaning him up after the keeper’s tried to nit interfere is what helped Freddy’s system to start spontaneous lactations. Now she’s bonded with Jameela but allows Kayembe to nurse sometimes (because it’s more for security and that she’s still his momma to), the primatologist I’m sure have learned so much with this unique situation. I find it so interesting but also I just LOVE ♥️ Freddy, Kayembe, Jameela, Kebi, Kunda and the entire troop. They’re one of the best behaved and I see Kebi watching alpha female Freddy and learning so much from her. I’m so glad they really liked each other and bonded themselves before they were introduced to Mokolo. Thanks for all the great content Larry and forgive me going on and on. That’s another symptom of my “MS” along with my grammatical errors and bad eyesight, put it’s good for my mind and helps me to be able to relax and still think about these wonderful creatures.

    3:51 this little piggy went to the market this little piggy say home… Oh my goodness she’s so cute and I just want to give Freddie a big gigantic hug. But I would be afraid that she would try to make me her baby. 😂 Freddie is truly top-tier top-notch next level.
    Even though I saw the pictures of Jameela and Kay breast-feeding, I still feel concerned about Kay not getting everything he needs from his mom. Although, the fact that she started producing milk for a child that wasn’t her own just further supports her complete dedication as a mom. Her heart, body, and mind truly respond to motherhood. Which brings me back to Kay.
    I think how well she manages to take care of both babies is determined by how Kayembe acts with a baby. He seems to do pretty well. I think that demonstrates Freddie’s ability to balance love and discipline not to mention he probably had a little bit of practice with Kunda.
    There’s no doubt he will be a bit jealous, however, I kinda think he’s been wanting a baby of his own ever since Kunda showed up.
    Anyway, I already spoke too much. I’m curious what other people think. Up until recently I mainly follow gorilla life channel the Momotaro family and DJ with his two sons Ringo and Jabali. So I don’t know much about this troop. I will say that Ringo and Jabali‘s moms are sisters and they really had a great relationship when they were placed their silverback. I am hoping to see Kunda and Jameela develope a special bond like that.

      Hmm, thanks for the lengthy, but thoughtful comment. I think with a team of keepers watching over this, Kayembe will fare well. Just Think of the International attention that Jameela has received. It behooves Cleveland keepers to do their best since all the world is watching. I have faith that they are skilled enough to do a good job of it. In regard to food supply and nutrition, Kayembe continues to receive a bottle daily and Kunda will also be offered multiple bottles for the next couple of years. Thanks for watching- oh, and to learn how amazing that cleveland team is please go to my 40 second video- “baby gorilla-Kayembe #8-1/2 for the link to a cleveland zoo presentation about the care and birth of Kayembe at a Tails & Cocktails event. Are the zookeepers going to wean Jameela off the bottle? I'm pretty confident that Freddie can produce enough milk for Jameela and that Jameela is a good nurser and has the ability to drink as much milk from Freddie as she needs.

    • @bhowl3792
      @bhowl3792 5 месяцев назад +1

      They have trained Freddie to bring Jameela to the mesh for bottle feedings, so they don't intend to stop. It was the same for Kayembe when he was Jameela's age.

    • @larrysanimalsafari
      @larrysanimalsafari  5 месяцев назад

      Thanks bhowl - also they will offer multiple bottles daily to Jameela ( just like they did with Kayembe) and allow Jameela to decline bottles when she wants to. She will likely wean herself off the bottles - as she changes her eating habits to the greens and browse like the older gorillas eat.

    Awwww...Jameela Is Coming Along Just Beautifully. Freddie Is A Great Mother, And Kayembe Is Being A Typical 2 year old. Such A Wonderful Union. I Have A Question, I never see them Eating Fruit, Is Fruit A Part Of Their Regular Diet?? Thanks Larry ❤❤❤❤

    • @vjc2270
      @vjc2270 5 месяцев назад +2

      Hi❣️Fruit is like sweets or cake for gorillas - something that should only be enjoyed occasionally and in small quantities. It’s not a huge part of their diet in the wild - they mainly eat leaves, grasses, bark, roots, etc. Their stomachs are specially adapted to process tough plant matter like that. Fruit is full of sugar and carbohydrates and can contribute to weight gain and heart disease, which is a major killer of captive gorillas, especially males. 😢

    Btw, do you know if the kids received a gift from gorilla life? Possibly a ball with holes in it or did they already have that ball? The guy who runs gorilla live channel mentioned something about it, but I wasn’t sure if he was saying he was sending a gift, or if he was saying that somebody else did and it was the same kind of ball that he got for his gorilla friends. I’m just not sure what he meant and I was curious.

      @karamichael2577 5 месяцев назад +1

      I suppose it was a silly question anyway. I guess I thought it would be neat. I know the guy from GL was thinking a lot about Jameela. The mother of the troop he films would be a good mother to her. Of course, traveling to Japan would be extremely stressful and if things didn’t work out, it would be a big problem. Still, I think his viewers would like to see her be a mom to a baby again.
      It’s clear now that Freddie was the perfect choice.
