Yeah smash was so scared of this game that they completely ignored it when making Sonic's moveset
His down air may be borrowed from one of sonic’s moves in battle but I’m not completely sure
🤓
What's really stupid about Smash Bros is that two of Sonic's special moves are pretty much the same except one jumps at the beginning. What, he didn't have enough to work with? People have criticized Sonic's moveset for being unoriginal in Smash Brothers quite a bit.
@@baalfgames5318 Yeah I hate Sonic’s moveset. The specials are the most glaring issue but his normals aren’t exactly incredible either
Nice one
Smash don't need sonics move since now he is top tier in ultimate
How fitting that this one came after Adventure 2 and most of the Advance games, because it's 90% *GRINDING.*
...just not on rails, though.
God my childhood. Played this one relentlessly, finding out the best moves and made emerl a beast. Like he has a three hit combo so fast now,its neigh impossible to stop it.
i remember something along the lines of Sonic 1st attack, Shadow second, Rouge 3rd and Tails heavy, its been a big minute so i may have the order wrong. also Rouge's ground special 💪
I thought I was the only one who remembered this game good times especially when finding those cheat codes for those crazy super moves in a cheat code book I miss those days
Hey lonely Goombas this guy really you or is it just a fake?
@TrainerblueTube Thanks it seemed fishy to me I just didn’t wanna be rude to him if it was
shout-out GameFAQs
I always kind of wished they made a sequel to this. I don't think there is enough demand for one though.
Sonic Chronicles oddly enough somewhat references this game which is weird. That's probably the closest thing to a sequel unfortunately.
@@TheLonelyGoomba One ill fated Sonic game that's never getting a sequel referencing another. Maybe the Gizoids are cursed.
This! This, this, so much this!!!
There will be once everyone hears about the knuckles mindsweep game
@@TheRealUnkn0wn_289 I own the physical cartridge for this game and didn't know that existed on it. My mind is blown.
I NEVER played the Knuckles minigame. Forgot it was even there.... it being Mine Sweeper is freakin hilarious!
Is it just me, or did Goomba’s animation quality get a little more high quality? Regardless it looks really nice.
It ain't just you mate.
Yes
No
Yeah he's actually having his face move instead of standing still
@@bwmpii_yt been like that for a while
Sonic Battle is a perfect example of Sega going “Well that didn’t do well, let’s never try this again”, which sucks, because a Sonic fighting game with his bajillion friends and enemies would be really cool. Just don’t make the campaign the most repetitive thing in existence, and we’re good.
Was there not a fan project last year that tried just that?
that's SEGA for yea, after 06, they're easy to scare off anything if you get enough people complaining
and the only way to see it again is if Fans do it
Sonic Riders moment 😭
@@JadenFox9 yeah... sigh.
@ Sonic Smackdown? it's actually a really good quality fangame looks almost official
It sucks that they've never came back to this. They could have a truly unique fighting game on their hands if they just fixed up the gameplay, added some online and maybe some new things. Certainly a missed opportunity. Plus the art style is really unique and I'd love to see a new game with it.
Yeah I agree. They had a good basis for a game here. When you're actually fighting and not just cheesing the fights, it's fun.
The story had no right going as hard as it did, but I'm glad. Gave me a real bright outlook for the future if this spin-off was so closely related to the lore and capable of satisfyingly expanding on it.
I think the one thing I miss most about Sonic Battle in particular was how deeply Sonic Team cared about making consistent lore for the Sonic franchise. Goomba is 100% right that this is the closest we’ll get to a Sonic Adventure 3. It’s unreal how much this expanded and stayed consistent with the Adventure era depiction of Sonic, especially after Sonic Forces proved modern Sonic Team cares about how these characters and their worlds about as much as Disney cares about making the newer Star Wars tales consistent with the Original Trilogy-that is, not at all.
Sonic Battle of all Sonic spin-offs really seemed to care about making young Sonic fans like myself at the time even more attached to each individual character and their arcs while recent mainline Sonic games like Forces just randomly throw in Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 references just for the nostalgia bait.
"specially after Sonic Forces proved modern Sonic Team cares about these characters and their worlds..." *Vineboom.mp3* "-about as much as Disney cares about making the newer Star Wars tales consistent with the Original Trilogy-".
"They had us in the first half not gonna lie."
Jokes aside... Yeah, it really sucks that a GBA spin-off game got much more care put into its story and characters than what was supposed to be Sonic's return to form in story telling. (Then again, considering that it was Pontac and Graff i guess we really shouldn't have expected the characters, let alone the story, to be good from the start...)
What's most upsetting to me though is that Forces had interesting concepts, Infinite could have been just as great if not better than Mephiles, the Phantom Ruby and the Null Space Zone could have been interesting plot devices, Sonic losing and being captured could have setup a story where instead of inspiring those around him he gets to be the one inspired by his friends (and the Rookie).... There was so much they could have done *just* with what they had!!
06 at the very least felt like it was trying to tell a compelling story for as flawed as it was..... Hell, it even has one of the best versions of Shadow in the games to date and Sonic's character is pretty on par with the Adventure series as well... Both games are cases of wasted potential, of course, but for different reasons.. And i'd say that Forces was the bigger one.
@@guiteshima Yeah, Forces is weird because it is massively disappointing for killing the much-needed momentum the series got from Sonic Mania, particularly in the storytelling department…but Sonic 06 set the bar so low that I can’t completely hate Sonic Forces just because it plays competently and doesn’t seem to have any major game-breaking glitches. Playing the PC version with weird mods is at least a fun way to spend a weekend. It’s insultingly easy and uninteresting, but at least it works as intended, unlike Sonic 06. At the same time, Sonic 06 was clearly made by a Sonic Team that still cared about making Sonic a character that young children and even some adults can look up to instead of a glorified Dad-joke machine from Sonic Colors onwards, and would have been amazing if the team wasn’t forced to skip the QA process entirely to meet some clearly-unachievable deadline…
@@JeffreyThrash That's fair, i haven't played either of them which is why i refrained myself from bringing up gameplay. However i do think i'd probably enjoy 06 more due to level design alone. Even though it has glitches, it's not exactly as much of a glitch fest as people make it up to be (But it's definitely FAR from being a polished experience.).
I think i'd just get bored of Forces because of how lazy it can be with its level design and how reluctant it is to fully embrace the concepts and ideas it proposes... Specially when i have Generations as a point of reference for level design for the boost formula (which i have played and finished).......... And from gameplay footage alone i can tell that the character physics are pretty gross.
Still, i can understand why some people don't exactly hate Forces. I just find Forces a bigger issue because unlike 06 the game wasn't rushed for an unachievable deadline.... Instead, they spent ~4 years on the conceptual phase of development and only in the last year and a half before the deadline that they started to work on the game seriously, or so i was told.... Like.... At least 06 wasn't the result of a lack of competency or care from the people working on it. They also spent too much time on this "Hedgehog Engine 2" which is far from being a replacement for the first Hedgehog Engine.. From what i can gather, the development of Forces was a mess and i can't even tell if it was Sega's fault or the devs...
Forces literally had only three level designers.... Two of which had never worked on a Sonic game before. They treated this project that was supposed to make Sonic seem great again with so little care it hurts.
Yep
@@JeffreyThrash Ever since Sega was bought by Sammy, Sonic games after Unleash had a lower budget. This is because thanks to Sammy, Sega gets alot of revenue from Pachinko machines. Which is exactly what happened to Konami.
I wish they would acknowledge Emerl more cause he is a pretty cool character. I'm pretty sure he's in this game and no other game afterwards mentions him. I know he dies in the end but having him as like assist trophy or spirit would have been cool
There are 4 Sonic X epsidoes that are loosely based on Sonic Battle. It's odd because the story line is really good, and the anime doesn't adapt any.
@@RadioTails I think I heard about it being in the anime but I meant more the games
He shows up in sonic advanced 3 as the final boss
@@chubbyj8219Sonic Advance 3 final boss is Gemerl
@@chubbyj8219 No that was Gemerl and he was a reocurring boss throughout the game the original Emerl died at the end of Sonic Battle.
Shadow's sprite, that was used in countless fan comics and flash animation, was the most seen thing originating from this game.
Lol, I believe 'cus this is the only sprite-based game in which Shadow appears
The same applies with Rouge
Imagine a world where Shadow didn't appear in this game.
Speaking of balance issues, there's one extra problem when playing out of story mode: you can carry over your customized Emerl into other modes like Arcade. Given how easy it is to turn him into the best character thanks to story mode, I can only imagine how easily multiplayer would turn into Gizoid Battle or how many times someone would annoy other players by picking Emerl while the rest wanted to have a friendly match.
Can imagine it now. One player annoying another to the point that they also pick Emerl... but they haven't even played the story at all yet so he sucks and they lose again anyway.
I gotta say you truly have not lost your great sense of humour over the years, still consistently get me laughing out loud
"Before you know it, it's IQ will be so high, it'll be able to understand the subtle humour of R&M"
Can't wait for Top 10 Knuckles MineHunt Strats tomorrow, hell yes
I love this games artstyle, I wish they did more games with unique styles
For the saddest story in the franchise, Battle is sure a wild ride. Always happy to see it covered.
Not gonna lie, wasn't expecting you to cover Sonic Battle. I thought you were just gonna cover the Advance trilogy, but I'm glad you talked about this one. It's gotta be my favorite Sonic GBA game.
Sonic Battle has always been one of my favourite Sonic games, heck just one of my favourite games. The fighting can get repetitive with how OP the special moves are (particularly the aerial bomb special), but not playing it all in 1 sitting helps with that. This is the best story in a sonic game, imo, and the music/art is top notch! And, growing up, I actually *did* know someone else with this game. 2 other people, in fact, since I convinced them to buy it. Multiplayer is pretty fun!
Also, glad this game keeps up the tradition of Cream the Rabbit being the strongest character in the Sonic universe; as it should be.
Is it bad that I kind of hope he genuinely does make a Knuckles mine sweeper video
The ps5 giveaway is a scam
@@Greenguy963 how do you know?
@@Greenguy963 there was a ps5 scam? I never noticed
I can’t believe Sonic has better and more cool special attacks in this game then in Smash.
One of the game's greatest strengths - it's reverence of the Sonic series law - also works against it in game design at times. That's why some stages don't get used in story (because they don't fit in the story, but they wanted them their because they're interesting or nostalgic), or why you only fight characters like Chaos once in the story (because to honour the Sonic Adventure story, there's no way to have him in a more active role - but they obviously wanted him on the character roster because he has a unique design that makes for an interesting and fun gameplay style and set of moves), or why you are stuck fighting 'Gamma' multiple times (Gamma is your 'generic enemy', to pad out encounters, like Soul Calibur's Lizardman, or Battle for the Grid's Mastadon Sentry - most of the time when you fight Gamma, it's not actually Gamma but one of those mass-produced models you find in and around Eggman's base levels in Sonic Adventure 2).
Still I think they did a fantastic job with what they had with Sonic Battle, and while I'd agree the game does get repetitive, they got ALOT right with the game, and it's probably still got the strongest (and weirdly most emotional) story of any Sonic game to-date. Even the legendary Bioware knew this, which is probably why they based so much of the lore in Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood on the events of Sonic Battle. Shame their desire to keep Sonic Chronicles child-friendly meant it never managed to tell quite as deep a story as Sonic Battle (which clearly was more happy targeting a teen audience). There's also yet to be a Sonic game with as much great world-building as Sonic Battle had.
Well put. What a unique spin-off. I’d definitely take “reverence to the lore” over what we get now with games like Fortnite, where they just slap random cameos from random franchises all over the place without rhyme or reason, ironically making those cameos boring and less-than-special as a result. Seeing Chaos 0 again in Sonic Battle was really cool because they at least attempted to make him fit in the story. Chaos 0 just randomly showing up in Sonic Forces’ cutscenes for no other reason than Member-Berries, not so much.
@@JeffreyThrash Yeah, like pretty much every other character in Sonic Forces, it's use of Chaos was very poor. At least his singular appearance in Sonic Battle made sense (he reawoke to protect the Chao again when he sensed they were in great danger, due to Eggman's death laser and the soon to be fully activated Emerl).
@@KotCR Ever since Sega was bought by Sammy, Sonic games after Unleash had a lower budget. This is because thanks to Sammy, Sega gets alot of revenue from Pachinko machines. Which is exactly what happened to Konami.
Man, I loved this game back in the day...even despite the "Now defeat me 10 TIMES" thing. Except Amy. Hated anything that had to do with her in this game. This is her at her worst.
Yeah I loved it back in the day. Less so now but the story still holds up nicely.
I would say she at her worst in free riders but this is a close second
i think i like Amy the most in this game. she actually has a personality to dislike here.
Oh man Sonic Battle, the spritework and move list in this game is amazing plus Emerl is just an amazing character. The story definitely got annoying with all the repeating battles but it was worth it for the writing and Emerl.
Love the jab in the title at those videos saying every platformer fighter is a "Smash Killer"
I love Sonic Battle and its story, so I'm glad you did the game justice. The Final Egg Blaster is actually even more dangerous than the Death Star however, instead of just wiping out planets this thing wipes out multiple stars at once.
Like the new animation style
Intro is always bars
Back in the day I was convinced this game was one of the "main" ones because of how it dealt with the story and mysteries of Shadow and Eggman's grandfather wich was an ongoing thing. Was shocked to find out it was concidered "obscure" and only the home conse platformers were considered "the main ones".
I'm glad this game got a video not only because of how great it is but because I was worried a certain entity from Advance 3 wouldn't get the atention in deserves.
I've played this game a handful of times and I'm just now learning about how the block mechanics work. I had no idea lmao.
Also i totally agree. Sonic Battle is so outstanding in everything but the gameplay department. It's so neat and fun, but gets way too repetitive. It's a shame though since building Emerl's moveset is a phenomenal idea.
I almost removed the block explanation cos it was dragging a little bit, glad I didn't. But yeah, I didnt know how it worked till this playthrough, it's never really explained. But you probably noticed you randomly blocked for no reason sometimes.
5:16 Cream being completely broken is just a tradition in Sonic games where she's playable at this point.
You know I've known about this game for ages but this is the first proper time I've seen a video actually saying what it's about, pretty cool
Yo loving the consistent uploads
Thanks for the heart
Ya same here
This quality looks way better this time...Goomba found a high-quality phone to record on this time around it seems! Make sure to thank the green pipe that gave it to you!
Actually emerald was such a popular character they actually wrote him into the Sonic comics
i thought gemerl was the one who was in the comics and not emerl

I got a kick out of that Lumpy Touch reference. Great video as always!

Uh, nope. I haven't. Someone should do a 6 part series on it. Maybe to coincide with the compilation's release
"shadow... should i be glad that i was born...?" LIKE WHAT ????
Tails living in a house shaped like his severed head is kinda scary.
This was one of my first ever video games, glad to see someone talk about it!
Can't believe they ported Sonic Adventure 2 Battle to the gameboy
I came here expecting a mediocre review from yet another person bashing spin-off Sonic games, but I am pleasantly surprised to see a well-made, thorough one. Thanks. Also, fun Sonic Battle AI facts:
- They will never take any actions if they are brought into the air without jumping. This includes falling off of a ledge, but does not include wall clashes.
- If not insta-killed, AIs will choose what shield special to take based on which special did the most percentage of damage to them. There are some weird exceptions when it comes to Emerl's Ultimate and Combo moves, since some of them don't act like specials sometimes...
- The AI difficulty seems to only change how much they shield, in my experience.
Thank you for still finding time to make theys videos
Can't wait for the Sonic Advance 3 video. It's essentially if you made a Sonic Adventure game in 2D and have a team up mechanic to where you control 2 characters at once.
Man, Sonic Battle was something else I tell ya, awesome video as always dude!
Your title card is amazing. Love the video Goomba
Goomba spoiling us with a new vid already, thank you lonely goomba 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Really liked the art style of the game .
Especially the cutscenes had a somewhat angular style to them. Pretty nice.
The animation quality has improved and it looks very nice!

That's just Cream in general.
Really loved this game and tried to make the best Emerl without the Super Emerl moves (with now 200% more unbalance!)
It's a good day when goomba uploads
still a pretty fun game, kinda wish someone would try to do this game again with more buttons, and this was before Colors/Free Riders, most Sonic stories at that time were good

i found ur channel a few weeks ago and instantly became addicted, and now i want a goom boy advanced for Christmas.🤣
The 3D is pretty cool but the way that the screen moves would probably make me dizzy lol. Great video man! 💙

Just stumbled upon your channel, your accent is unique, cool review & great job!
8:56 Emerl: I'm invincible!
Me: You're a loony!
First a Donkey Kong series, then a Sonic series. Maybe Mega Man is somewhere in the future, especially with the Battle Network series getting remastered.
Or possibly Pac-Man with the Pac-Man World series (at least the first entry) getting remade.
Fun fact: in the Encycl-speed-ia, they confirm that Chaos is dead, and considering that this game is his last cannoical apperance, that means that Emerl kills Chaos in this game
actually you dont even have to fight chaos his fight is literally optional(though he has some good passives like the fact he takes less damage than normal ermerl can get)
everything is canon
Encyclospeedia has some errors pointed out by Sonic Lorepost. Chaos is actually alive shown in current sonic stuff like Sonic Channel comic.
I remember back in 2009 playing it as a flash game lol I wanna go back to the old days

Sonic Battle Content in 2022? I'm all here for it (completely unbiased )
I hope Sonic Frontiers brings back the iconic Knuckles Mine Hunt mini game
The title gave me Hungrybox PTSD
I've played and enjoyed Sonic Battle for over half a decade and only now I find out THERE'S A KNUCKLES MINESWEEPER MINIGAME?!!?!?
Great video. When I was playing Sonic Battle I had a difficult time myself due to only knowing the cheese you can do by just doing rouge's air kick over and over until she falls. I enjoyed the game and especially the story but it is definitely a bit rough around the edges at points besides just the cheese. I really hope a sequel is done, doesn't have to be a triple A title or anything, just something on par with the eshop kirby spinoffs. It would be a great way to utilize Gemerl, who hasn't been used in anything since Sonic Advance 3 besides the Archie and IDW comics.
Also, where can I listen to that Unknown from M.E GBA cover? It sounds really good.
I remember seeing an ad for Sonic Battle, and thinking it was neat. Pretty cool to see what the game actually looks like, even if most of the moves are too OP and the AI is dumber than bricks.
I'd totally love to see you review the Battle Network games!
If only there was a collection for these games dropping soon.

Also this is probably the game where Amy is at her most psychotic ever in the entire series. It is downright disturbing. Even Heroes Amy isn't as creepy and broken as Amy is in this game. I'm glad you mentioned that lmfao.

Loved watching this video. Thanks for making it. I have never tried Sonic Battle's multiplayer, which is probably the best way to play the game. Too bad I was anti-social when this game was new. Oh well...
Very interesting title, I keep hearing mix reviews of this title. Especially the game play elements. It seems to be a fun title to play two decades ago but now, I do think so unless the individuals just like the sonic franchise.
