Personally I find them pretty strange. I went about 2 years ago and was shocked to see a lot of the machines selling used "clothing". Strange place.

I've been living in Tokyo for 8 years and went back to Boston for a trip recently. The lack of vending machines was very.. inconvenient.

There's a big store in Kyoto that has hundreds of gumball-machine-like vending machines stacked 4-8 high and wall to wall as far as the eye can see. Each machine has just one type of product - my personal favorite is the section that has probably at least a dozen machines that carry nothing but different hats for CATS!!! I love Japan!

Consumer culture is indeed efficient BUT bureaucracy, banking, work hierarchy etc are inefficient to a staggering level.

In America there would be vending machines yet they would be broken, un stocked and take your money without a refund and the owner would not care and no one at City Hall or the government would help you..

I went to Japan once in 2019 and saw lots of vending machines. I was upset to go back to Indonesia not seeing those vending machines again. I ever heard of a ramen vending machine.

The split-second clip on 0:02 is from the Robot Restaurant which sadly is a casualty of covid lockdowns and is now closed. Oh and the hot corn soup I thought was decent, but will not be having it again.

really cool but also, striving for efficiency and convenience has some disastrous effects on the mental health of a nation. increased anxiety and sense of low self esteem for not being 'productive' enough
