Sorry, as an Indonesian from Christian background, I would like to tell you that native Papuans only make up around 15% of all Indonesian Christians here. So the narrative of “Papuans want to escape Indonesia because they’re the Christians unlike the others” is totally irrelevant. The largest ethnic groups making up the Christian population in Indonesia are the Batak (in North Sumatra), the Tionghoa (spread all across Indonesia but mainly in Java, Sumatra, Borneo), the Javanese (self-explanatory), and the Minahasa (North Sulawesi). There are more Christians living in Java than there are in Indonesian Papua. None of these ethnic groups wants to separate themselves from Indonesia, on the contrary, they’re the ones who want to valiantly preserve the Indonesian republic. Some predominantly Islamic ethnic groups such as the Acehnese and Minangkabau (both located in Sumatra) historically had some resentment or even declared separatist movements against the Republic of Indonesia between 1950s and early 2000s.

What makes it different from Papua New Guinea is Indonesian central government provides subsidies, financial support, and infrastructures to them. Not to mention many people from other parts of Indonesia are developing the areas and economies in west Papua. Had they fully governed the territory as their own country, it would not be this prosperous.

Lot of people stereotypes diverse countries like Indonesia and India where there are hundreds of ethnicities, languages, customs,traditions (and looks obviously), geography etc and usually identify with the one mostly visible in media. I'm Indian and while travelling in SE Asia, lot of locals thought I was Malay and Indonesian.
Totally agree, and those stereotypes are very annoying. Indonesian is not ethnicity but it's nationality that's all.
i kinda understand why they mistook you as local, when i visited bali, sometimes i have some difficulties to differentiate which one is the indian tourist which one is the indonesian 😂 bcs sometimes you will find some indian physical feature on indonesian especially on the western indonesian, my teacher back then always mistook me to have somewhat indian/arab ancestry bcs of my sharp nose, brownish skin, and thick eyebrow and eyelashes, when in reality i have no record abt that, im just a mix of ethnic java + minangkabau, well indeed some of our ancestors had been mixed with the indian traders in the past, some had been mixed with the chinese, european, arab, melanesian, and others. So yeah, indonesia is pretty a diverse country. The media only shows a small portion of us, bcs we're so into west pop culture and kpop, they select the one that has the closest look to the trend to be on our media, and voila you got that "typical" look of an indonesian, when you go to indonesia and find the reality that not all people look the same then you'll put the statement "oh they dont look like an indonesian", then when you scroll the comment section you'll always find the comments saying that indonesia occupies that particular area, saying us the same as "western colonizer", im so sick of this 😔, we're not colonizer, they are just poorly educated abt us

Sorry, as an Indonesian from Christian background, I would like to tell you that native Papuans only make up around 15% of all Indonesian Christians here.
So the narrative of “Papuans want to escape Indonesia because they’re the Christians unlike the others” is totally irrelevant. The largest ethnic groups making up the Christian population in Indonesia are the Batak (in North Sumatra), the Tionghoa (spread all across Indonesia but mainly in Java, Sumatra, Borneo), the Javanese (self-explanatory), and the Minahasa (North Sulawesi). There are more Christians living in Java than there are in Indonesian Papua.
None of these ethnic groups wants to separate themselves from Indonesia, on the contrary, they’re the ones who want to valiantly preserve the Indonesian republic.
Some predominantly Islamic ethnic groups such as the Acehnese and Minangkabau (both located in Sumatra) historically had some resentment or even declared separatist movements against the Republic of Indonesia between 1950s and early 2000s.

No Papua was forced to become Indonesian in 1963 and then later in 1969. Papua never wanted to become part of Indonesia and was about to gain independence. Then Indonesia attacked and caused massacres. Killed half the Papuan population.

Don't get me wrong, west Papuans elected their own governors, mayors, parliament members, so they have a degree of autonomy. What makes it different from Papua New Guinea is Indonesian central government provides subsidies, financial support, and infrastructures to them. Not to mention many people from other parts of Indonesia are developing the areas and economies in west Papua. Had they fully governed the territory as their own country, it would not be this prosperous.
