I think this is the best story I’ve ever told. Thanks for being here with me , and I’d love to get your feedback on this kind of storytelling. This will be my future moving into 2023 and beyond! Love you guys and Happy New Year 🙏
Your guide knew what was up. He probably felt that taking you to the tribe that really does get down with cannibalism wouldn’t have been the best idea…Granted it’s not the tribe you wanted to go to…but it may have been the safest. I’m glad you chose to stay and learn about them❤️
I wonder why some of the tribe..it looks especially true in the children, have modern clothes, like t shirts? I keep noticing it in these "last" tribe videos 🤷
@@stephaniedennis5125better than fucking death I think people see this comment as me saying he woulda died had he been taken to that tribe, But it's an exaggeration and I didn't mean anything serious as I was just joking
Thank you for "taking us to the jungle with you and meet this tribe"! Thank you for sharing your experiences and adventures with us! You are so brave to have traveled there ALONE without any way to contact the rest of the world while you were there! I am adventurous myself and I love to travel and meet people from different cultures and values and traditions...but I don't think I can do what you did there. It really takes unbelievable bravery, courage, and trust to do what you did! I also love your message to us at the end of the video! Much respect! "Just go"! (Where can I get that shirt? So cool!)
he's only saying "papua island" so you won't find links to 'west papua" and the 1.8 million dead genocide for u.s. mining.. it's the worlds largest goldmine, but no one tells you. independence leader filep karma was assassinated on october 31 2022 but no one tells you including drew.
This is truly incredible. It always feels remarkable how easily humans from completely different walks of life can connect over music and food. No understanding of the language needed, just that immediate connection. I really love that you made the point at the end about how all humans are fundamentally the same, we have the same needs and often share the same core values: family, love, community, happiness, health…no matter where we come from and what our culture is. Videos like this are a great reminder that there is more that joins us than divides us if we’re willing to observe, learn, share, respect, and just seek to understand one another as humans. While society may call these tribes uncivilised- look how readily they welcomed a complete stranger from the western world despite them being exposed to western people very little. And then compare that to how many in the western world ostracise those from other countries, races, religions; cultures despite us having shared space with them for such a long time. I know which feels more civilised to me.
A guy named "Daniel Hanson" on youtube made a "remix" of him singing with them on a 10hr loop. It is one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard 💙
We can't call these people primitive or poor. They are perfectly adapted to their environment and look healthier than most people living in western cities. They don't have all the material possessions that are a burden to us, and they have close friends and families giving them what is most important in life - Love.
Martin is smart! He mislead that man on purpose to keep him safe! He knows the tribe more than any other tourist would and the potential danger of the tribe. This also lets them clear their name and educate people of their culture and the differences. Beautiful video! ❤
I transcribed the short melody we heard here for trumpet just an hour ago. It is one of the most beautiful melodies I’ve heard in a while. Reminds me of Congo Square (check out Wynton Marsalis’ recording with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra). The phrasing, power and control of those guys singing was just ridiculous. I want to know so much more.
As a Papuan, Thank you for step in and showing this documentary of my people to another area of the world. We (as indigenous people) are very kind and very welcome towards new people as long as you are with another local and being accepted by the head of the tribe.. If you come with good intentions, The mother earth of Papua will be with you. I want to highlight that "not all tribe eat human in Papua", Most of them already are getting influenced by Church, so they are more open to outsiders. Again, Thanks alot drew. Hope you'll be visiting again for another amazing tribe in Papua! 💕
U mention Church, do u mean a religious church? Who do they worship now is there a spirit or god or something they believe in? How do they think we come into existence as humans on earth? I'm not sure you know the answers I'm just curious I thought I would ask thanks in advance for any information
@@SparkingLife111 We have a lot of tribes here, each area land have their own native tribe.. What drew mention is in South Papua, the area between Asmat Tribe (the famous one), Muyu Tribe. I am from Mee Tribe (Ekari Tribe), from Our Grandparents used to tell us that they used to believe that there is superior spirit that watching us, it impact on how they lived like certain social values based on how they believe the ancestor respond. For example "They don't steal from somebody's garden, they will have skin diseases because the God is watching or you can't have intercourse outside of *Marriage* if other people in the tribe find out, they will hanging them and shoot them with arrow because both of girl and boy violet the laws as the tribe believe", They don't have the kind of rituals like you see in the movie. Of course, it happened before Missionaries and Government came. And different tribe has different story. For now, most of the tribes here is have a taste of Christian Values, Catholic value, also Islamic Value. But also some of them still hold their cultural values as well.. the influenced by those making most of tribe here open to the modern world/people. I hope this help. Again, I just giving additional info as Papuan here.
Yeah dude, i think your guide taking you to this tribe was a good idea and was a lot more interesting. A auspicious outsider coming to visit a cannibal tribe that burns and eats anyone they SUSPECT to be a demon could easily end in disaster. This tribe you can actually feel relaxed and not worry about being analyzed if you're a demon
Stop being a simp go lay down somewhere talking about fearless man get your mind straightened out then maybe people will take you serious CHUMP! smh that was cringe to read I can't stand what you just said!
The singing man walking over the bridge with his child upon his shoulders truly humbled me. His voice is majestic and made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Beautiful 😊
Should change the title of this video to “looking for the tribe that eats humans“. It’s a good video but considering your narration of how much you respect them it seems pretty exploitive and disrespectful for you to keep that title considering this particular tribe supposedly does not eat humans
I always love seeing youtubers explore places and tribes like this, it's gives so much of the other prospective that's often misunderstood. There's so much more culture, and human connection. It's amazing.
Even for us (Indonesians) traveling to West Papua is way more expensive than to Malaysia or Singapore .. Respect your efforts bro 👍🏼 Anyway don't forget to visit other unique tribes in Indonesia such as Toraja, Baduy, Bajau
The singing was SO beautiful. And I love the sounds of the forest as the sun went down. Thank you so much for sharing this with us - it takes a level of courage to explore like this. Not sure if I could do it myself but I sure do love watching you do it! 🥰
They're so many kilometres away from each other but their singing sounds like the Baka pygmies of the congo rain forest. I'd say they even look alike. It's remarkable
not watching it, did he mention that genocide of 1.8 million west papuans over 61 years for the sake of u.s. government backed u.s. mining in terests (freeport mcmoran). west papua is the site of grasberg, the world's biggest goldmine. in 2018 freeport sold a 51% share to indonesia in risk of increasing unrest. no one in the u.s. will mention it. independence leader filep karma was assassinated on halloween 2022. no mention in the news. question your media. west papuans experience a culture of sustained grief and being shut out by the media of the world, they know this, you do not.
Great video, Drew! I grew up in the jungle in Biak, Papua (Indonesian) between 1974 and 1978 where my parents open primary school for the local people. Your video reminds me a lot. We used to go deep into the forest to hunt for food (fish, snakes, wild boar, birds, etc). Although we left the jungle in 1978, I still have a few friends that grew together with us in the jungle. Thanks for sharing!
I’m low key thrilled you went to the friendly tribe lol And you found the better guide than the other guy. What an incredible journey! The singing is incredible. I could listen to it all day. ❤️
I’m an Indonesian living in Bekasi and never heard of this tribe, thankyou for sharing your story! Great vlog! Nice video! Very informative and entertaining!😆🙌🏻
Hello from Indonesia! As a humanitarian worker, I’ve been to Papua several times. I can tell you Papuan people are very kind hearted people even they look fierce from the outside. Glad to see this video. Thanks for sharing bro!
I wish there was a way to hear them sing without exploiting them. Truly some of the most beautiful voices/songs I’ve ever heard. I don’t even have the right words to describe how incredible their voices are.
This idea of exploiting is a weird concept. Any time we enjoy another culture we are said to be exploiting it. Well then according to that logic since you watched this video and enjoyed the beautiful music without sending any money to the tribe then you just exploited them. Culture is meant to be enjoyed by everyone I'm not sure why white people seem to think by enjoying other cultures they are exploiting it. I think it is a white guilt thing so this helps them to feel better about themselves.
@@BigPinkFloyduh no, you can enjoy a culture without exploiting people. reminds me of that photographer for national geographic who took a photo of a girl without her permission. she didn’t want to be on camera
This episode of your adventure was, by far, my favorite. Especially at 13:10 when that singing brought me to tears. Thank you for helping us understand that which is so often misunderstood. I love you too for including the native drumming upon awakening. Those bugs are brutal. A million thanks and well done, bravo
Did anyone notice the organic sonorous pitch those two men displayed while they chanted their traditional songs??? That was amazing… Music knows no boundary, race or colour❤❤❤.
Just yet another comment to ensure that your Facebook videos encourage us to reach your RUclips channel. Not only do you visit these places, but you also positively help these places (stir fry etc). Please keep doing what your doing. It’s amazing! I’m stuck in the uk watching these videos wishing my life carried on in a different way. I’ve visited the “tourist” side of china and that is all! Your amazing and I’ll continue to subscribe and watch what you do!
That “ten thousand years ago” really hit me. We truly need to cherish these tribes, as they genuinely give us a glimpse into early humans, and how humans have loved honestly for MOST of our existence. These people…they’re the real us. They’ve been us, ever since “us” was a thing.
Yea cherish the people who live with disease, starvation, murder, and cannibalism. Instead we should love them and take care of them and give them the necessities that they deserve as human beings.
@@dswag8495 get a load of this guy. All of humanity lived like that for millennia. The industrial revolution is not necessarily a good thing (depression, suicide, homelessness, poverty, wars.. etc), you live as you want and let others be.
@@dswag8495 If technology advances overtake human evolutionary progress it causes destruction and devastation. It has been tried in the past and does not workout. You have to let it develop naturally. There is a reason why one of the tribes he visited is not practicing cannibalism. Eventually the tribe that practices cannibalism will subside naturally or both tribes would be wiped wiped out eventually as it happened in humans history during evolution. If you just start giving them technology advances from the outside and disregard their current state of living they will be in for pain and destruction for the next generations. Neither to them nor to us it would be helpful. We can only intervene in the slightest ways like building friendship and telling them about our way of living conservatively not force a way of living though
@@Roensmusic Your comment is the best example of "what people do for views these days " This man show us the life inside of a sacred tribe for views, meanwhile you show us irrelevance for views.
I came to see this accidently. I am from Sri Lanka and I loved watching how you navigated in their world. I loved the way you ended this and your message. Thank you for sharing these beautiful stories.
I love how this older woman shows Drew the fish and then raises her eyebrows at him! She reminds me of my mum, crazy how even if there's the language barrier, people just can understand basic physical cues!
Great you ventured in there and gave them the respect due despite the sensationalist title. I grew up in Papua New Guinea to the East and spent 17 years there, speak both common languages and travelled all over the country including to tribes that only had first contact with Europeans in the 1950's, especially in the Highlands. I also had many West Papuan friends and have been to Jayapura as well. My father was an anthropological film maker and spent 35 years in PNG documenting the culture and I spent lengthy periods with him on location living in villages, swimming, climbing coconuts, eating sago, yams etc. Big part of my life and yes there is a lot to learn from tribes like that. One thing you find in Melanesia is that by our terms they have little, but they actually have a better stress free life in the village, always smile and will always welcome you and give you what they have. I do get annoyed about titles that hint at current practices of cannibalism etc, as do many Melanesians when people use these titles. Simply not a practice anymore. As I said, I like that you didn't push that narrative and gave it context by saying the practice, if it still occurs, is associated with tribal warfare and ritual pay back and witchcraft and sorcery. Papua New Guinea still has sections in its laws and constitution to do with sorcery. If you ever need any contacts in PNG to get you anywhere and want to hook up with my dads old colleagues who work at the National Film Institute in Goroka, which he built and developed and are all PNGean film makers, let me know. They are also the authority in PNG who issue commercial film permits to people wishing to make larger scale commercial content.
I am from Papua New Guinea and I agree with the sentiments you have shared here. Cannabilism is associated with payback and tribal warfare as a form of punishment.
This was so awesome! Takes a lot of courage and bravery to do this and it’s incredible of you to share with the world! Showing this to my kids as our homeschool lesson tomorrow and it’s so inspiring to me! Thank youuuuu
If people are confused this tribe is called Momuna tribe, which is correct is somewhat similar with Korowai (they live in tree houses too). That means Drew may actually went to Yahukimo regency (The name is from Yali, Hubla, Kimyal and Momuna, four big tribes here) in Highland Papua. Definitely not a safe place.
The hairs stood up on my neck and i got goosebumps when they started singing so beautiful something so primal about it, what an amazing experience, thanks for sharing Drew!

Wow, I grew up in Papua and people kept telling me about these cannibal tribes...I didn't think it was true. Although, it was indeed quite dangerous to explore the remote tribes, I still remember the adrenaline I had everytime we were going to remote places in Papua and encountered some tribes.
Beautiful video Drew! My grandparents were one of the first visitors as tourists on Papua land. They visited the Corowai and 35 to 40 years ago. They made lots of photos and even made a videotape, so everyone could see it back home. Back then, those people didn't wear shorts. It was a hollowed root shived iver the male privates and women wore skirts from straw. They brought me a real bow and some of their poisoned arrows back with the warning to never touch the tip. Still have them in my possession. This tribe also cut off fingers from people who did harm to others or stole stuff. I can imagine that they also ate those parts. Thank you for bringing back memories💜
Hi bro @Drew Binsky. This is my second critique to you because you made this video with your limited knowledge about West Papua and Papuan. The word and phrase that I want to critiques are the word “Canibalism”, “CANIBALISM… But still ONE ISLAND where it is practice these days”. The questions are have you seen those people practice Canibalism in front of your both eyes? If so upload one of the canibalism practice video then? If they are cannibalist then you already eaten by them. You just an idiot RUclipsr. Have you read the history or articles about Canibalism practice in Wet Papua? Or Don Richardson book? If you have a video about those people practice canibalism than you can upload it. If not then how confident are you using word of Canibalism in your opening video? Hi bro let me tell you something: Did you aware that you spread a negative mindset or image to the world community that Papuan are cannibalsts? you just using the word of cannibals for your lust and interest? Cos you will have a lot of benefit in your bank account when many people whatche, coments, like and subscribed. It’s seem like you made island of Papua/an as an object for your benefit. I suggest that You must be careful use the word of “canibalism” because you put Papua/an as in negative side, and you don’t give them anything, you took a lot of benefit from them (you are a stealer), whereas you are degrading dignity of Papua/an. (That what white people do until now in West papua: FreePort In Timika and BP in Bintuni) I want to teach you here: You must know first that West Papua has more than 250 tribes and 400 languages. Each of tribes has different way of life. Long time ago only 2/3 tribes in Papua were practiced canibalims but not to day. “NOT TO DAY”. There are some KINGMI & Reformed Churches there and schools in Koroway. The Coroway people now practice Christian life. Those people normally go to churches every Sunday and their children go to schools every day. I have a Momuna tribe friend here in New Zealand, He just finished his master degree (civilised). actually Koroway people using clothes in their everyday life not like in this RUclips., they using traditional costumes because @Drew Binsky want to made a video on RUclips. (That’s okey you have freedom to do anything as far as Koroway people like your mission but your biggest mistake is you spread out fake information that they still practice canibalims, this sound sad you put them in hell). My conclusion is: this is a kind of neo colonialism. Hope you can make any changes in this video.
They were joking about being cannibals still.. There is a reason ... While the disease hit the Fore people, everyone in Papua knows, that eating human flesh can spread the epidemic of disease, highlighted by en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuru_(disease)

Well, he got one thing wrong. That wasn’t an island 65,000 years ago. And “humans” as in hominids have been there for a few hundred thousand years. The people living there now have more DNA from those ancient peoples than anyone else alive today.
one of my favorite things ever is learning about new cultures. i have never found anything more fascinating than seeing the many ways people all over the world live their lives and adapt to the environment around them. this video was insanely interesting, and I thorougly enjoyed learning about the mamuna tribe!
Learning about other cultures is one of my favorite things too. That is why I decided to watch this video. Even though I am disappointed that he didn’t meet the cannibalist tribe, I was not disappointed to learn of this tribe.

Can't connect with their culinary preferences 😅
Drew, do you have a longer clip of the singing? it is soul nourishing
You were lucky to have witnessed that.

Exactly
What is that thing in their nose
okay, but imo there is never an excuse for exocannibalism
I am from Papua New Guinea and I agree with the sentiments you have shared here. Cannabilism is associated with payback and tribal warfare as a form of punishment.

(That what white people do until now in West papua: FreePort In Timika and BP in Bintuni)
I want to teach you here: You must know first that West Papua has more than 250 tribes and 400 languages.

Even though I am disappointed that he didn’t meet the cannibalist tribe, I was not disappointed to learn of this tribe. I still want to know about the cannibalist tribe, but not at the expense of the reporter/explorer life. Maybe I will learn about that tribe some day. 😊
This is absolutely amazing! Tremendous work man
Drew, I am in awe of your documentation of this unique tribe. Thank you for risking your safety to share with us the lost wonders of our world. Your statement at the end of the video was especially touching to me, so thank you again 💛

HOW
I've always wondered what it would be like to travel back in time & I think this video shows what is would be like if we met our ancestors who just lived day to day, eating whatever plants were around them and living in communities. So grateful that they let you be part of their goup for a short while! This was so interesting to watch Drew! I loved what you had to say about their values as well.
but these aren't anyone's ancestors...these are real people living today. and one shouldn't portray those who live differently to the Western world as "primitive". I assume that wasn't your intention tho 😅
@@benjianstey4661 my intention was not at all to be evaluative when I was writing that comment. I know "primitive" as a word has negative and hierarchical connotations. I don't use such a word bc I don't want to offend someone. I realize when I said "I wonder what it would be like to go back in time" that doesn't make a lot of sense because evidently the "western" way of living and ppl living in tribes coexist at this point in time anyway. If I offended anyone you can call me out for it. I just thought this was a great video and wanted to comment on that 😊
@@maurice8180 no no no definitely not trying to "call you out" on anything 😁I don't like that culture, if my tone was a bit confrontational, it wasn't my intention - just as someone who lives in South Africa, Africans are often portrayed as being of an "ancient way of life" or "living like our ancestors" which at the end of the day can be a harmful characterisation. I just wanted to point out that it came off a little like that rhetoric. Agreed it was a great video 🙌
@@benjianstey4661 I actually didn't mean you specifically, I meant anyone who I might offend, but English ain't my first language 😂 should have typed "they" not "you" 😅

It's funny how people get confused with the Dutch and Papuan thing. Like, if you are from Papua why do you speak Dutch :) In Canada they end up getting confused for the first nations people here.
Interesting, you're the guy in the blue shirt? so you're quarter/1/4 Papuan-Melanesia then 75% white/caucasian or also mixed with Austronesia/Austroasiatic? you look like my friend in East Nusa Tenggara. The Dutch really go everywhere to spread their gen hee

Their joy as they call out and sing is so moving. I lack the words to express my admiration for them, and for this creator. What a video.
Admire people who kill ,cook and their fellow humans?
I totally agree- they are beautiful, skillful singers with strong voices. Hearing them communicate and celebrate was definitely my favorite part of the video. Thank you so much for sharing. (I’m an opera singer so I have a deep appreciation for their unique musical language.)
It's really interesting to see how diverse we humans really are! That guy singing, without a care at all that he'll be judged by anyone listening. I'm guessing that has no place in their village. He sings like we talk, just another way of expressing ones self for him
It doesn't matter where we live. What matters is how happy we are with our lives. They have no stress, no rush, no bills to pay....they just enjoy their life day by day. The smiles on their face is genuine.

(That what white people do until now in West papua: FreePort In Timika and BP in Bintuni)
I want to teach you here: You must know first that West Papua has more than 250 tribes and 400 languages.
It sounds soo beautiful when they sing. It's something I have never heard before and yet I love it so much. They have such a deep bond, I think it is amazing ❤❤
I'm envious man. Amazing. Well done.
