jasonwidegren - thanks Jason. Very happy to be of help in an area that I do know something about. And I’m glad that it improves your enjoyment of the music in your car.
I can’t understand anyone who doesn’t keep their sound systems set to maximum immersive sound! Good luck with your automatic tailgate installation! I can’t wait to see your video of it!
L Brenner - Thanks! I’m reserving the whole day although I hope not to be longer than a few hours. Most important thing is to make sure I have all the tools on hand :)
Great video!! I agree with you that it would be great to have presets because different genres of music require different settings to help optimize the soundstage
Thank you for reviewing the sound system options. Sound is such a key part of any car experience and I appreciate you covering this in detail. It definitely is a major element based upon the capacity of the system included in the three. Can’t wait to see how things go with your electric tailgate. Best of luck!
Great video Peter 🙂 With the audio settings I have never really altered them much...I though when I clicked immersive sound it set the sliders automatically but now I know that isn’t the case 🙂👍. And I look forward to your rear strut video...good luck 👍
MARK BARLOW - Thanks Mark. I have someone inside Tesla and I’m gonna be sending my request for a 10 band equalizer and the ability to save presets to them, and see if we can get it to Elon’s ear!
If you need install help with the auto trunk, let me know as I've done quite a few of them. Best tip is to put the rear soft close latch box on the left side of the trunk opposite of the sub woofer as there is much more room on that side and the control box can be mounted on the fender wall there without having to bubble wrap it and such as you see in just about everyone's install video. Keep up the great tips :)
Thanks Peter, I’ve just applied those settings to my sound system. What a difference it’s made. Many thanks for your help and again an excellent video, the highlight of my lockdown day.
I may be wrong, but I think the difference between 'standard' and 'high' immersive sound is that 'standard' uses the speakers differently (as you and others have said) but doesn't electronically alter it. I believe 'high' stretches the stereo image, which is very simple to do electronically. Things that were a little to the right move further right, and the same with the left. Just my hunch.
at low volumes, a v shape may be helpful. however, at high volumes, the bass and treble really tend to become more apparent, so a flat or flatter profile is more desirable if listening at high volume. this is due to the ear being less sensitive to different frequencies at lower volumes.
Ryen - You’re absolutely right. Which is why I am pushing so hard for Tesla / Elon to implement the ability for us to save our EQ settings in the form of saved presets. With the ability to do that, we can create settings for every occasion and easily switch between them
Another great video. Did you know if you tap on each vertical on the equaliser it will adjust to that level. Same functionality in the balance adjustment. No need to swipe.
That was good but as far as the power lift trunk lid I can't imagine why anyone would want that unless they're just unbelievably weak, this is a not a large deck lid additionally one of the best feelings I get from that car is closing that deck lid the way it's shuts so perfectly, at some point power mechanisms just become added weight and power drains as well as junk.....
Thanks for the info. Your typical EQ settings are very similar to mine and you're right, that immersive sound is fantastic for me too. And yes, Elon & crew, please add presets. Vivaldi and Pink Floyd really need their own EQ settings However, speaking of audio quality, suddenly you sound clipped. Like your mic is either set to record only when it hears sound rather than continuous, or the noise cancellation setting is too high. Really noticeable with headphones on - my default setting at home. :) THX again, M3M (pun time) :)
Greg Valunas - Hey Greg! You are so right. And here’s the cause (going to have to change the settings to eliminate that clipping). I am using a Noise Gate plugin, and it is clipping too quickly. In other words, when it hears no voice, it immediately cuts sound level completely. Then when I start talking, the gate opens again and allows my voice through. So the problem is that it is CLOSING the gate too quickly thus clipping the very end of a word or sentence. That is bad and thank you for noticing that. I will fiddle with the settings so I avoid that. You’ve got great ears :)
A few other possible ideas for future videos might include; how to clean your Tesla? I’ve heard a lot about carwashes but I’m not sure what the best way is to wash the car. By hand? With your blower? Are towels a problem? Can I go through a car wash? What should I do so I don’t damage the paint?
That’s easy. In the sound settings click on BALANCE. then drag the center ‘button’ down or up. Down mixes the sound to the rear speakers. Up moves all the sound to the front speakers.
Thanks what I meant was how do I listen to music in the front while my kids play games at the back. At the moment only one can use the sound. Can I split it?
Aaaahhh, got you! I don’t believe that’s possible at the moment because you’re looking at two different audio streams but only one player amplifier. If I find out differently I’ll let you know here.@@angeliquemeyerdubruyn3080-
Just adjusting these settings on my new model y. I have an additional sub setting in my car. What would you recommend setting it to with the above settings?
i missed the part on the video where you got mic measurements and ran them through REW, then adjust EQ settings. Also why shift the balance to the left to make the speakers closest to you the loudest. I would imagine this would skew the hell out of what little time alignment options the cars settings can provide (at least by todays date)
Interesting video!! I agree that having a 10 band equalizer, Like I use to have in the ... 70's and 80's 🙂 would be pretty cool!! However, now that I have to, occasionally wear darn hearing aids if I am in a crowd, when I listen to my music alone in my M3 Std Range, I like it "CRISP" meaning in the old days I would boost the 5 channels on the right, and I would lower the 2 or 3 channels on the left (Bass stuff) so that I could listen to all the subtle little noises, instruments, in the background!!, Right now I have 2 right channels at 75% max and 2 left channels 75/80% down and positioned slightly back and to the right from my driving position.(Just about behind the passenger's Left Shoulder) and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band or Alan Parsons Project-Pyramid sound DELICIOUS!! (I know I still crank it a bit, but how can you listen the Thunderstruck with Low volume!! 🙂 Thank you for a great explanation!!
I have seen a lot videos about paint, the outside paint that are easily maintained. But no videos about the paint on the inside of the body. Some parts hasn’t paint at all! Driving on salted Norwegian roads, I have to have my body corrosion protected. I have read about the warranty in the manual, and Tesla doesn’t allow this to be done. I find this a little strange. What do you think? I suggest make some videos about this topic. Good and safe driving!
Thanks for the video. Absolutely love the soundsystem in my model 3 long range, heard the audio system was designed by former Bang & Olufson folks, would love to recreate the same sound system, wireless, in my home for streaming music and watching sports. Can you make some suggestions?
Long range - it was the only option available in June 2018 when we were one of the first to order the model 3 as it arrived in Canada. I’m glad though that I have the long range battery as it’s coming extremely useful
@@model3man so I got Apollo (m3 Long Range) a couple of days ago and tried out your audio settings. Absolutely amazing. Way better than the standard settings. Thanks again for sharing and explaining.
@@christianmettri5679 That’s wonderful. And I’m really pleased that my video came in useful for you! Enjoy Apollo and keep sentry mode on when parked in public. Lots of bad actors out there!!!
Richard S - It’s more of a favourite list really and in my experience they tend to stay in until they get pushed out by newer settings. But I’ll look into it and let you know
What's the best option for audio source, to get the best quality possible? In my current car I use my phone with Spotify, via Bluetooth. But when I play music via USB stick, it sounds noticeably better. Only problem is, controlling music via Bluetooth is better and the music tracks to choose from are endless. I like the fact I can just hop in the car and ask Google to play any song that comes to mind, but only downside is, is that the quality isn't the best. So I feel like, if I was to have a Tesla and upgrade the sound system, would it be a waste of time, because my audio source is from my phone via Bluetooth? Or would it sound great anyway? Or is there a device to buy, that I can have Spotify on, play via Bluetooth and also sound high Def?
The sad fact is that the source is all-important. For example, if you put lo quality MP3 on a USB stick the sound would suck. If you put high quality MP3's that you've 'ripped' from your music CDs, they will sound really clear and good. All streaming (especially Spotify) is done at a much lower bandwidth which is why they don't seem to sound quite as good and lack strength in the low end, high end and the harmonics. Sound transmitted from Bluetooth also loses a small amount of fidelity in the transmission. Finally it depends on the quality of music coming from your phone. If you're streaming from Spotify to your phone, then Bluetoothing it to your car, again you are never going to get sound quality as good as high quality MP3's on a USB drive. However the good news is that unless you are an audiophile purist, due to lots of extraneous noise from the road and wind (and passengers) you are not really going to notice the very subtle differences (unless you're driving on your own, at low speeds, and on newly tarred surfaces).
Great video. Are the settings connected to the user profile? Whatever happened to the good old Loudness setting? Is there a setting that increases the sound as the car goes faster as there is more noise?
Another really helpful episode. Thanks. Now, a broader question. If you were replacing your car today would you go for another Model 3, or the Model Y?
Peter, before you do your trunk kit installation. Watch the video recently post by Electrified Garage. Use the 12V power source under the Rear seat. It doesn’t matter whose kit you install, this is the place to get your 12v power from. No need to run the wire all the way too the battery. I have the Tesla Offer V2 kit.
I have the smiley face curve, but I have my MID way down at something like -3dB. It's too 'echo-y' for lack of a better word. Everyone's ears are different I guess, and mine are sensitive to mid tones it seems.
Harry Marshall - Yes - everyone experiences it quite differently which is exactly why I go on and on and on about gaining the ability to save these presets so we don’t have to keep fiddling with EQ sliders.
Interesting that you have Immersive Sound on high. I find that it mixes the channels so you lose the stereo separation too much. Of course, this will happen in standard too, but to of a more acceptable level. I really like the 3D effect applied to stereo music, but it depends on the music and how true to original I want it to be.
I'd love to use your referral code but the Tesla site does not yet support Model Y orders and there doesn't seem to be any way to add a referral code to an existing order prior to delivery (or even after delivery for that matter).
Robert Gamble - For more advanced users, there are a variety of methods that can be used to set EQ more accurately - from a technical point of view. But, the problem is this: setting up the audio for best EQ is very different when the car is at a standstill, parked somewhere quiet, analogous to your living room. Then, when you get out on the road, everything changes because now bass gets masked by road noise to give just one example. Therefore, there would be a need to set the EQ differently for long distance on-the-road use compared to stationary use. That is why I have advocated for the ability to save Presets so that I can have EQ that matches different circumstances without having to fiddle with the sliders and lose my previous settings. This would be an easy software fix on Tesla’s part and once they do that (and give us at least a 10 band Equalizer) we can talk about scientifically setting up EQ for different circumstances like audio use when parked; when traveling at speed on a freeway etc. Thanks for your question and support of the channel
Hey Peter, could you talk us through selecting sources for the music in a M3. I too love my music and MP3 doesn’t cut it, so how do you select your iPhone or storage device for lossless quality? Still saving up 😄
Try an ABX blind test of higher bit rate MP3s (Spotify's higher quality option is 320) versus lossless FLAC (CD quality) using the USB option in your car. You may be surprised. Most listeners cannot distinguish between the two. If you want FLAC just rip your CDs and load the resulting files onto a USB drive. Ignore those who can "hear the difference"
I sat in my new Tesla & set my audio settings as suggested then all of a sudden the slider mid & Treble went to the bottom & I can’t get it to move. I tried everything is it a bug in the OS 2020.8.3? Do you know how I might get it so it will work. Thanks
Interesting video, thank you. Question: Have you noticed the sound of the system change a little bit with some software updates? I got my Model 3 in 2018 and I could swear one or two software updates changed the sound a little bit. I had to adjust my settings to compensate. Not sure if there have been any changes recently though. Specifically, it seemed to make the bass more pronounced and then less.
Yes - that was my experience too! Perhaps they were concerned that bass settings that were too pronounced might damage the speakers and sub woofer system where people just cranked up the volume too high and the sub woofer might become damaged because of that. That’s my thinking on the reason for the change.
@@model3man Peter, I love your approach to these hints, tips and suggestions. I have a Y on order but have no idea when it might arrive. I hope I get the car before the Super, Double bad disease affects me.
nowtleft2 - oh yes, any tone adjustments you make will be saved automatically. However, if you want to set different tone settings for listening to music when stationary, or other tone settings for when you are driving on the freeway, you cannot do that. You have to physically move the sliders up and down each time you want to adjust them. Much better to be able to save different collections of settings as presets.
Ok, but how do I enjoy my music CD's? I have in excess of 2000 music CD's so there's no way I'm even considering putting them on USB sticks. I just want to "select-n-go". Can you figure out any way I can play my CD's? I would be most grateful for any ideas to easily achieve this so I can enjoy the music that I have paid £thousands for.
David - I get your point and understand where you’re coming from, but, there’s no way you can play your CDs in the car as it doesn’t have a CD player and doesn’t allow for you to attach one. In any event, you‘d have to bring a stack of CDs with you on each trip. However, you can rip them onto your computer and turn them into MP3 files. Then you can purchase a 500 GB SSD flash drive which can connect to your cars USB port, and you could have tens of thousands of songs on that hard drive. I don’t have better news for you than that. Of course, ripping does involve work and you you would have to copy those MP3 files onto the 500 GB SSD drive. But that way you’d have your entire Collection with you
@@model3man thanks for your prompt reply. Peter, I really don't want the faff of all this work and time commitment at my age, neither do I want to have to shuffle through thousands of songs whilst driving to play the ones I want. I can easily select one or two CD' s within 30 seconds from my collection at home to take with me and then insert and play them almost instantaneously with hardly taking my eyes from the road.....simple & convenient! It seems to me that technology can often be a huge retrograde step with many things....using a sledge hammer to crack a nut. Simplicity is the key to a happy life! Is there no "aux input" facility in the Tesla? Then I could use a portable CD player like a "Sony diskman" ( remember them?) or similar, or is there such a thing of a Bluetooth CD player? I love your videos by the way (now subscribed), they no nonsense, factual & informative, delivered in a relaxing enjoyable style without the product sponsorship and "fill-in" crap that is associated with many RUclips videos these days. I'm looking forward to watching all of your back catalogue and future videos on the Tesla. If anyone else reading knows of a way to facilitate my CD craving please let me know.
The reason increased bass and treble sound better to us is because our ears are more sensitive to midrange. We evolved to tune in the human vocal midrange. By increasing bass and treble, we are effectively flattening our natural hearing "frown" with the equalizer "smile".
Honestly this is a veeeeeery subjective topic. The Model 3 has a "GREAT" sound system. Best in-class for sure, losing out to only flagship sedans like 7 series/A7,A8/S-Class (which also benefit from better sound deadening), really an unfair comparison. Now when it comes to EQ settings: Every sound system will have to be EQ'd slightly differently. This is if you're after ACCURATE sound as it's intended to be from the studio or however the mastering engineer wanted it to be. While you can definitely do this for your listening pleasure you'd need more scientific measurements to conduct these tests and apply corrections accordingly (kind of like how paint correction depends from car to car, similarly speakers, drivers, have slight differences as does the environment they are placed in). The equalizer setting recommended here is popularly known as a "V-Sound signature" and can easily be found in many popular audio brands such a V-Moda and Klipsch audio some like it, some don't. This sound signature tends to compress your mids which can really affect vocals. For electronic music it works fine. What I'm getting at is if you want perfection there's other ways to get it. But honestly your car makes so much ambient noise it's quite a terrible environment to get "perfect sound" from. Just set it to whatever YOU like. Like bass? crank it up! Like your jazz? crank up mids and highs! etc etc. I still appreciate the in-depth walkthrough on the EQ settings as I'm sure many haven't even bothered touching it. Also: EQ'ing should always be down below +0db gain or you'll have clipping in some situations. So don't crank your subs super high. I wish Elon gave us a pre-amp gain so EQing can be performed without losing volume. Immersive sound is great for the theatrical effect and sound separation but it does some weird software trickery which can sometimes lose details in songs. Keep it off if you're a purist or at normal. Cheers from the Island across Model3Man :) Keep the content coming!
Rishab Iyer - Thanks so much for such a detailed reply. I agree with the bulk of what you were saying. And yes, sound is absolutely one of the most subjective experiences in the sense that different people like different EQs of their music. For example, my wife always tells me to turn the bass down. I always want to turn it up. I like it louder; she always wants it softer. Here’s the real problem. If every time you get into the car and do different things (long distance drive; short trip to the store; sitting in the parking lot waiting for wife) you would have to constantly fiddle with the equalizer and lose your previous settings. My strong message (to Tesla/Elon) is to allow for presets. It’s so obvious and so simple to achieve - I can only think its not at all a priority for them. But I am pushing it and sending a request to my contact in Tesla to get my request to Elon’s ears. I think the thrust of my episode was aimed not at purists, but at regular Model 3 owners who just need to use the existing settings better, and who don’t need a sophisticated / scientific approach to getting their in-car sound sorted, but who do need a basic understanding of EQ and the immersive sound feature. And yes, by the way, i do agree that immersive sound feature does some weird things to the strength and positioning of certain sounds including the vocals, but overall, I still find my listening experience is more enjoyable when I use it compared to when i don’t. But that, too, is of course very subjective, and some music comes across better and some not so good when used with Immersive setting on HI.
model3man completely agree. A number of presets (like you brought up) for different occasions/family members/genres would be a very welcome addition. I think a pre-amp would also be great!
@@model3man are the settings saved within each driver profile? If so you could use this as a workaround for presets, by adding a different driver as preset#1 with the different audio profiles but retain all other car settings.
I was hoping someone would use a real-time analyzer to measure the "best" audio EQ settings within a premium audio of a Model 3. I really enjoyed how you covered all the speakers and placement here: ruclips.net/video/jZEGbs5xZEU/видео.html (I also agree with you on 24:03 of that same video - Tesla NEEDS to implement those software changes)
Kenneth Jones - Thanks Kenneth. I’m going to try to send that request (for being able to save EQ prefers and for installing a 10-band EQ) to someone who might be able to get it to Elon’s ear :)
Best is a relative term. What is best to you is not what is best to me. You might think that you could adjust it for a "flat" response but usually a "flat" response sounds terrible. I think he did a pretty good job of explaining the basics here. You should adjust the EQ to what sounds the best to you and then be happy.
It is true that full immersive setting can affect different songs in different ways - some cause the main vocal line to be overwhelmed by the music elements of the song. However, it is not all or nothing. You can have a moderate immersive sound or full immersive sound and so, as you choose from those, you can see which setting you prefer. It’s not for everyone and some people just like the flat stereo sound. So, try it: if you like it keep it, if not set it back to immersive sound off
Sorry but playing "immersive sound" is a terrible idea if you have any respect for the artists and the recording studio. Google S1nn (A German company who designed the audio systems, they were bought out by Harmon, which in turn was bought by Samsung a couple of years ago) were interviewed. They have spent a lot of time and expertise designing the best possible and most ACCURATE sound system. They explained why the sound system is so good and why an electric car is ideal for good auto sound systems. If you want accurate surround sound by the way, buy SACD disks and play them over a compatible player and you will hear music recorded in three dimensions (hint: much of the time it won't sound much different than stereo, although you may get a better reproduction of the acoustics of, say, a church) When they were interviewed they lamented the "soupiness" that results from using immersive sound because you are distributing the sound around the interior of the car while ignoring how it was originally conceived and recorded but remarked that Americans seemed to demand it. They were also not too keen on playing around with equalizers for much the same reason. They have designed the sound system using much more sophisticated instruments than any of us have access to to optimise the frequency distribution to reproduce the original recording as accurately as possible; they have also designed the audio system and the interior of the car with the same considerations in mind. Yes, you are entitled to your own taste in adjustments, and so are the drivers that turn up their bass to the max, but at least try using the original settings.
You do understand that I strongly recommended against that -8 approach? I thought for a moment that you were thinking I was recommending that. Yes, the V shape (or smiley face) is most likely to give the most pleasing tonal balance :)
There are many videos on RUclips attempting to cover this and yours is by far the best.

I would imagine this would skew the hell out of what little time alignment options the cars settings can provide (at least by todays date)
Awesome stuff, and the high happy face is the way to go! ;)
Great content Peter!
I want to have speed depended volume, a loudness setting & reverse mute setting :)
bitman EV - that’s a good wish list. I’ll add those to what I’m going to send to Tesla
Is it possible you send also a request to Tesla, asking for playlists compatibility to listen to USB HD music collections? Thanks.
Thanks for the video. Absolutely love the soundsystem in my model 3 long range, heard the audio system was designed by former Bang & Olufson folks, would love to recreate the same sound system, wireless, in my home for streaming music and watching sports. Can you make some suggestions?
What an awesomely informative video and presented so concisely. Cheers sir. Subscribed and look forward to more videos from you.
Thanks for the great video and explanation. What model 3 are you driving? SR+ or Long Range?
Long range - it was the only option available in June 2018 when we were one of the first to order the model 3 as it arrived in Canada. I’m glad though that I have the long range battery as it’s coming extremely useful
@@model3man Great! I have also ordered the long range and will then immediately try out your audio settings.
I think this is great. I look forward to tweaking these settings.
Thx for all good tips :)
I'm not sure i understand what you mean by "copywrite strike" against you?! Great information thanks
That was great, I learned a bunch.
Nice video! Can you delete a station you pre-set?
How many stations can you save?
Thank you.
Model 3. I just did that hehehe
@@model3man yep, and a great suggestion. There are loads of ways they could improve the already great system.
You do much the same as I do. Good video, and well explained :)
Interesting that you have Immersive Sound on high. I find that it mixes the channels so you lose the stereo separation too much. Of course, this will happen in standard too, but to of a more acceptable level. I really like the 3D effect applied to stereo music, but it depends on the music and how true to original I want it to be.
Harry Marshall - Thanks Harry. Appreciate the encouragement
I'd love to use your referral code but the Tesla site does not yet support Model Y orders and there doesn't seem to be any way to add a referral code to an existing order prior to delivery (or even after delivery for that matter).
Shouldn’t a “pink noise” source be used to set the tonal quality?
Which audio settings is it? The one in the thumbnail or the one in the end ? They are both different
Now have an auto option in emeserive sound, would you recommend that?
Peter, if you want a automatic rear opening door, buy a Model Y! :-))
Roland - and you’re going to provide me the money to do so LOL. Excellent. You’re on :)
@@model3man Peter, I love your approach to these hints, tips and suggestions. I have a Y on order but have no idea when it might arrive. I hope I get the car before the Super, Double bad disease affects me.
Roland - I’m sure you’re doing a very able job of Covid-dodging :). Hang in there :)
How about SUB settings in V11?
Yep. That’s just been added and controls the subwoofer speaker in the trunk.
Doesn’t your last setting used for tone remain?
nowtleft2 - oh yes, any tone adjustments you make will be saved automatically.
What has happened to all of our channels? We only have local radio.
Wooo thanks
The reason increased bass and treble sound better to us is because our ears are more sensitive to midrange. We evolved to tune in the human vocal midrange. By increasing bass and treble, we are effectively flattening our natural hearing "frown" with the equalizer "smile".
Honestly this is a veeeeeery subjective topic. The Model 3 has a "GREAT" sound system. Best in-class for sure, losing out to only flagship sedans like 7 series/A7,A8/S-Class (which also benefit from better sound deadening), really an unfair comparison. Now when it comes to EQ settings:
Every sound system will have to be EQ'd slightly differently.
I really enjoyed how you covered all the speakers and placement here:
ruclips.net/video/jZEGbs5xZEU/видео.html
(I also agree with you on 24:03 of that same video - Tesla NEEDS to implement those software changes)
I would prefer Elon as tonal control for music genre like agreeing, jazz, rock, pop, etc.
🙂👍
Setting immersion to high makes many songs echoing.
So, try it: if you like it keep it, if not set it back to immersive sound off
Simply put
Tesla sounds system = Trash and need a whole rework
Sorry but playing "immersive sound" is a terrible idea if you have any respect for the artists and the recording studio. Google S1nn (A German company who designed the audio systems, they were bought out by Harmon, which in turn was bought by Samsung a couple of years ago) were interviewed. They have spent a lot of time and expertise designing the best possible and most ACCURATE sound system. They explained why the sound system is so good and why an electric car is ideal for good auto sound systems. If you want accurate surround sound by the way, buy SACD disks and play them over a compatible player and you will hear music recorded in three dimensions (hint: much of the time it won't sound much different than stereo, although you may get a better reproduction of the acoustics of, say, a church)
When they were interviewed they lamented the "soupiness" that results from using immersive sound because you are distributing the sound around the interior of the car while ignoring how it was originally conceived and recorded but remarked that Americans seemed to demand it.
I use the V also setting plus bass boost on iPhone for my rwd model 3 sounds like I have a sub for a standard audio system
Worst advice -8 bass hell no sir.
You do understand that I strongly recommended against that -8 approach? I thought for a moment that you were thinking I was recommending that.
Yes, the V shape (or smiley face) is most likely to give the most pleasing tonal balance :)
