HOW IT WORKS: Sikorsky H-19 Helicopter

- The H-19 "Chickasaw", which was a multi-purpose role used by the United States, is credited with many innovations which were forward placement of the engine below the crew compartment and in front of the cabin, with offset flapping hinges located 9 in (229 mm) from center rotor, and use of hydraulic servos for the main rotor controls. This allowed for more versatile capabilities than previous designs.
Made my first Static Line Jump from a H-19 - was somewhere near San Antonio, Tx, circa 1967 or 68. The copter was out of Ft. Sam Houston, as I recall. I was USAF stationed at Lackland AFB (MTI duty). Most of the other jumpers were Army Airborne (who were learning to Free Fall.) Made quite a few jumps from the H-19. And, yes, it was noisy as hell, and did vibrate a lot. Ahhhh, great memories. USAF Avionics, Ret. B-6370 PCA & USPA
Made many flights on these in the 60s. No jumps but did a few repels. Loved them.
Watched it all - LOVED it. I dig these old black and white instructional films.
I'm glad I found this. I just bought one of these on eBay but didn't know how to use it.
Love how the oil fill pipe is larger than the fuel fill pipe
Hahahaah... you can lose your head inside there
Well, the oil only comes in 5 gallon cans. Which begs the question: How much oil did these babies drink?
Check to make sure there are no MAJOR oil leaks. When you don’t see any oil leaks is when there’s a problem!
some leaks means some oil is in there :D:D
As the owner of a Land Rover Defender, I can approve :-P
@@troncologne hahah my son-in-law works for Land Rover and we looked at buying one but he warned us of the issues.
Haha so true, I was a young jarhead when I learned from a crew chief “leaks or drips are the norm” if everything is bone dry there are seal problems. That was something I looked for on every bird I would get into. Mostly ch46 or 53. Great air taxis
Hahah that’s funny as hell....the same situation for me! We must of had the same crew chief! Flew from Camp Pendleton to San Clemente Island and I told the crew chief that there’s a oil leak and he’s like 👍 That’s a good sign!
I’m very impressed with how crisp and proper this mans uniform is.
They were made from cotton and you could spray with starch and iron or just send the to the Army's Quarter Master laundry and ask for hanger service. An old trick I use to do for real sharp creases, I would turn them in side out, put masking tape on the crease, then turn right side out and iron. You could cut cold butter. lol
@@fido3561 AMEN to that

@@lolathedog3108 Before NOMEX was invented in the early 60s.
A Crispy starchy uniform, hope they didn't starch the undies as well boxer shorts?
I was born the following year on Lackland Air Force Base San Antonio, my dad who is a medic or doctor got orders to incirlik Air Base turkey which we moved in 58, came back in 1960, relocated to Amarillo Air Force Base, a lot of nice memories back in 57,58, we moved to Houston and 65 after going back to San Antonio for two years oh, my bad my dad was transferred to Danang Vietnam after that
The check of the fueltanks for water and foreign matter is only successful when it ran into your armpit.
Or your ear!!! Man it hurts like hell and takes days to stop hurting! But that old time leaded 100 octane was nice and clean and smelt a lot different to todays poor excuse for fuel .
@@Mercmad has always had 7777ways to do every job .
I've always loved the S-55/H-19/H04s/HRS they were the first choppers I remember as a boy and my Revell model ! They were long gone when I joined the Marines in 1979 except for display. I think I'll make another model ! thanks for the video

I was a crew members on UH 34Ds in South Vietnam and loved them and the other US Marines who flew in them
One of these flew me out of Tam Ky to Da Nang when I came home from Vietnam. That was in 1967. They were good at providing medevacs for us, even at night.
Sitting on top of a big block V-8 Buick motor, there is a clutch and direct drive line to a differential that feeds power to the main rotor drive and extended drive line to the tail rotor. If you ever get a chance see one of these in refit, it's awesome 😎
Love these old Army training films, The date in the Flight log is September of 1956
And at Fort Rucker, Alabama!
Great film, about a really cool helicopter. I love all the detail. Wish I could ride in one. Thanks for sharing.
An iconic helicopter. It's profile is unmistakable.
Yep - even starred as the "Screamin' Mimi" in a TV show years ago.
That sure is one quiet helicopter!
You're watching the only guy to make all these checks.
I guess the crew chief is having his coffee.
you mean tom hanks!
As a student pilot years ago, I also make these checks. I am very very thorough with my preflights.
@@envitech02 yes sir its better to find a problem on the ground than in the air!!!!
Scott Just Scott, On the contrary, My dad once owned an H-19 and several other helicopters over the years doing helicopter logging, Ariel firefighting and construction with them when he once ran his own helicopter business. He checked every part of his helicopters. Every helicopter pilot, and mechanic check all that parts moving and non moving parts.
I'd much rather zip back in time to be this dude than live now.
yeah, cuz your life sucks. maybe put in some effort

10:44 Tom Hanks starting up the chopper.
I thought that too))
Larry Hagman
"I'm not a verra smart man, but I do know how to pretrip an H-19 for lieutenant Dan"
I flew one. It was a cool helicopter. Big. It flew like a big Schweitzer. Except mine had a turbine conversion.
Well that turbine must have knocked a week off the preflight inspection.
I'm impressed that Forrest Gump also became a proficient helicopter pilot while in the Army in the '60s.
What rank ?
I love it!! Does anyone else notice that the pilot looks like Tom Hanks?
Well he did put Tom Hanks as his name in the log book at the end.
no..larry hagman
although I'd probably be dead now,, i wish I was this guy at that time doing what he is doing at that time,,,for this film!! i think these guys, like my stepfather who lived through this time were real men. i love you Mr. Stones. and thank you.
"This is Zebra-1, we need an emergency airlift, over !" "Roger, Zebra-1, just give me half-an-hour to complete the pre-flight check."
It is halarious that the procedure for checking the fuel is to dump some on your hand, lol.
For normal operation you and the helicopter should smell like fuel.
and PUT OUT THAT CIGARETTE first!
It was a different time... lol
Now you got a cup to catch it in, so you can check for water. Not sure how you could check that, or anything else for that matter, besides ensuring 100LL smells like 100LL, and you don’t have any boulders in the tank.
@@jaysmith1408
Boulders would be a Bad Sign™ 🤣
Just absolutely fantastic FOOTAGE
Yessir, never fly this bird unless your hand smells like gasoline.
An NCO would be detailed to do this in real life I'll betcha
fuel check that is :D
they were more concerned with the job.. only 2021 are people worried about booboos. Is this Jet Fuel PABA free?!
Damn I can’t seem to find any veterans in the comments, I love talking to them about their experience with aircraft.
My dad was the flight mechanic on one of these at Whidbey Island naval base in Washington State until the pilot got caught in a fog bank and took it into the drink.
My dad flew them in the air force, he was flying them in sault ste marie Michigan
I can’t believe I watched this entire video! I need to get a hobby and a life. The one takeaway...Tom hanks is a decent helo pilot and he does go by the book.
Veri good i like the Choper and the pilot thanks from Carlos Portugal
Jesus. This would never pass an F/A-18 inspection, not even a turnaround. When they designed this thing, they must have imagined that it would function in a military manner in a low-stress environment.
The aircrew flying, crewing, maintaining, servicing, testing, troubleshooting, modifying, repairing Battle Damage, salvaging, investigating, and managing these squadrons and sections, were truly tough and brave. They made decisions and got things done with new technology and equipment such as this bird, like hot rodders behave in the car community. My deepest respects to all three groups.

Well,I do make some aircraft models including helicopters&I won some prizes too in my school exibitions!Looking forward to more such videos.❤️
Had no idea the engine is in the nose!
while cockpit is in the rotor...
Sweet now when is it coming to DCS this thing would be fun!
Will all the mentioning of proper oil levels as well as hydraulic fluid and fuel , I am surprised they didn’t emphasize checking prop wash level. Very important and the job of every new mechanic or crew member of bird regardless of branch of service.
"And check for 'excessive' oil leakage" :D
+rkan2 Yeah! I caught that and was laughing....they're all leakers. ;)
That's how you check the oil on a radial engine. If its leaking the oil level if fine.
If engines from that age do not leak oil you suspect there is no oil inside them
they forgot to mention check for the level of blinker fluid and make sure to get and exhaust sample after ignition..
That’s my dad in one of the training films he was in
12:08 woo how was that shot made. Tail rotor can do some damage to yah 😳
UNIQUE HELICOPTER
WOW they use chocks on running helicopter at that day :D it restricted in my job due to ground resonation :D
I preflighted c-152 and c-172's long ago, but I recall we had a little plastic cup with a pin to check for water in the fuel, the pilot there is using his hand, thats zany. He should at least had a Dixie cup to check it. Fuel is slightly toxic, it wonder if it caught up with him in his latter years. Never can tell. Cool radial engined chopper...
ALL Aviation Fuels(any hydrocarbon fuel for that matter) are carcinogenics and will eventually cause cancer with prolonged contact without using PPE. I used to steal protective vinyl gloves from my Oil Company Employers to do my fuel checks for PPL/IMC/MULTI & Instrument Ratings. Even my Examiner thought I was a "cissy" !
My first and only flight was on one of these in 84' before the airframe was retired and cannibalized for parts.
Using your hand as a container when draining fuel to do a quality check (6:26), but this was decades before HR was something to worry about.
i only came here to know how they get in the cockpit but stayed for every thing
Now I can fly. Im getting one for camping.
Everyone else: it's literally Tom Hanks!
Me: *it's literally Harold from Thomas The Tank Engine*
Why is the pitot tube on the wing of a B-25 so extended and long ahead of the wing?
So per the log book, it appears this was filmed at Fort Rucker, Alabama, in September of 1956?
@17:10 , this is Larry Hagman right before he auto-rotated after flaring in Jennie. Fact.
The pilot looks like Larry Hagman.
4 years have passed I answer this person from the movie Forest Gamp. This one how is it? mm ..
Ok I wanna go fly one now!

Oil puddle too big to step over? Problem.
Better than a chinook, they have buckets to catch hydraulic leaks during flight. Gotta love it
now my wife is mad coz i check my car like this aircraft... and take 20mins everytime
good job
3:40 "Check for excessive oil leaks" :-) So, oil leak, yeah okay, but it shouldn't be tooooo excessive... lol
check for oil by pouring it out, a
Radial engine, if it ain't leaking oil, it needs oil.
The pilot forgot to place pito tube cover back to its position when he finished the job.
OK. I'm ready. Gimme the chopper...
Tom Hanks is a great helicopter pilot I see.
Snake Pliskin training for New York?
Jolly green. Now you ready to mow down some zips
Could they have made it any harder to get into to?
It's the military. They don't make things easy for you, just any flag officers which might be passengers.
Great gym-training c before flight 😁
Don't you check the outside first?
Imagine the camera gear that was required to produce that video. No GO PRO back then.
So, all helicopter crashes happens after all these inspections ??
I remember a TV series where two guys were detectives, and had an H-19 painted pink.

Very interesting. Although I don't know why the designers placed the engine in the front. I guess gas turbines weren't available back then
Early 1950s helicopter. It was the only place to put a heavy radial aircraft engine. At that time they were still working out the gearing to link a turbine to propellers or Rotors. Early turboprops tended to have frequent gearbox failures. Same problems would have effected helicopter applications.
Did science find an explanation on how this thing would fly like with the bumblebee or is it still a mystery?
Whelp. My life is complete .Thanks.

Why where these helicopters made so narrow?
Tom Hanks is the pilot.
How much do you want for this beauty ?
Looks like Rucker terrain...pilot looks like Tom Hanks.
make sure that you make sure ….
Looks like a cartoon helicopter
this is not "how it works" but more of a training film on how to fly it....
Marines it was CH 34 1962,65,66 RVN
UH-19 HRS
Only check for excessive oil leakage... Because some oil leaks are normal...
That’s how they did fuel samples back in the day?
Ok, someone has to address the elephant in the room, how old really is Tom Hanks? This is a mid 50s video and he looks 30 ish, so now he is in his early 100s 😂😂😂
Jokes aside, I love these videos, they show how complex the appreciation of technological advances is. This cockpit and the controls are quite basic and simple, so you can say it'll be easier to learn and to fly than a modern aircraft, but by understanding the intricate modern avionics, the aircraft can fly by themselves... Anyway, how freaking old is Tom Hanks? 😂😂😂
Just get to da choppa!

Excellent question! Had to look over again, i mean, those starters are powerful, but not rotor at 1200 rpm powerful.
