  • All Terrain Tire Comparison: Firestone Destination AT 2 & Firestone Destination XT | Campus Automotive Inc.
Here is a short all terrain tire comparison I did on the new Firestone Destination AT2 and Firestone Destination XT. I like the approach Firestone had when designing the Destination AT2 and Destination XT. I think that they recognized that one all terrain tire could not meet the needs of their customers. The Destination XT is built tough. The Destination AT2 has dependable on and off-road traction and longer-lasting performance compared to the old Destination AT. I did really like that old Destination AT and purchased several sets for my vehicles and for vehicles I have sold at my dealership. You can't go wrong here. Both tires are awesome mid tier tires.

Hi Matt, you bring up a great point about tread compounds. I just changed out my OEM set of Hankook ATM tires for the Firestone AT2. The Hankook's looked fine but in rain, snow and ice or any cold temps they were not very good. I have always felt it was the compound.

I’ve had KO2s, AT3Ws, & now XTs. While the ko2 & at3w sidewall tread is more pronounced, the XTs have handled beach sandy conditions just as good as either & snowy conditions better than KO2s.The XTs are lighter & have never been problematic staying balanced. Half tread left after 35k miles & will buy again when needed.

I've been researching a lot and I'm landing on the Firestone AT2. I have a set of Big O Big Foot AT2's (rebranded Nitto Terra Grappler G2's) and though they work fine on highway, they're loud, Lose grip in the wet, and they DO NOT loose like gravel. Another reviewer put the Firestone AT2 up against the G2 and the difference was night and day in every category. Seeing as how I spend most of my time on pavement and hardpack roads, I've concluded to saving up for the AT2's Thanks for the info!

I never thought I would ever buy a Firestone tire but the XT is by far the best tire I’ve ever run on my F-250. Great summer and winter traction. I’ll buy them till they don’t make them anymore. 10/10. If I had to say a bad thing about it, I do wish the sidewall was better looking. A very minor gripe.

I wanted something a tad better then a all weather tire for the winter as I live in Mass. Planning a road trip in September cross country in the 1500 Ram and so far they are doing well and feel comfortable that these tire will and can handle anything along the way. I thought of the Continental CT A/T as you chose, but their regional warehouse inventory is horrible and I hear their sidewalls are one of the weakest. Perhaps you could throw a set of these on one of your trucks and update eveyone - make sure you hit some gravel and more. Take care in Virginia.

Well, I purchased a set (4) of the Destination XT tires for my 2020 Chevy 2500HD 6.6L Gas unit (loving it thus far). Although it is early and plan to update you again after some gravel road travel (i.e. Alberta Rocky Mtn. foothills driving), I can comment for now on local & highway driving, as compared to my previous Michelin Defender LTX MS tires. As for noise on a paved road, including some roads under refurbishing where they have those long scrape marks before they lay down new asphalt. I noticed how the XT tire only sounds approx. 10-15% max. louder to my ear (delightfully surprised by a much more aggressive tire). The sound and road feedback on the scraped road sections and bumps/ruts of regular pavement were more suppressed (again, another positive surprise), and perhaps because of the thick tread blocks absorbing that energy or dissipating it. In summary for this short term review, I am very pleased with the XT tire; beyond my initial expectations.

Using the Destination XT on my 2016 Silverado 1500 here in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan with 36 inches of snow it doesn’t care I have it in Auto mode for the 4X4 and I have yet to cause enough slipping to engage the 4X4. Sure these tires are overkill for a half ton but for where I’m at Michelin Defender LTX M/S will not cut it up here

Really appreciate your videos! Buying new tires (mild a/t) for 4x4 Titan, and I live in south Texas. Lots of rainy days on highway, but also on the ranch (mud, dirt, steep creek crossings) and air down to drive on sandy beaches. I’m mostly considering cooper discoverer at3 4s or Firestone Destination AT2. Prefer minimal road noise and good wet traction, Would you pick one of those or something different? Thank you!

I went with the Cooper Discoverer at3 4s and I love em! Road noise is barely noticeable at highway speed and not noticeable around town. And off road traction is everything I wanted! Great on the ranch, muddy roads , steep crossings etc. I have Firestone destinations on the family van and they have more road noise than these.

The XT is a great looking and intriguing tire, in my opinion. One thing that worries me though is that they advertise the XT as being the heavy duty off road focused version....but they are significantly lighter than any comparable tire I’ve found. Even lighter than the oem mall-terrain 265/60R20 Wrangler SRA’s on my 2500HD. If they’re lighter than my street meats, how much stronger could I expect them to be?
I get that lighter tires should help with fuel economy, but I have to believe there’s a sacrifice in strength must be made.
In addition; both of those tires only have two ply sidewalls no matter what load range, although I’m sure the XT is tougher.

Had them on my 15 Silverado 2500HD and they were the worst of all worlds...rode rough, very mediocre at best snow traction, and the the wear wasn't that great either. Granted, these were LT load range E rated tires (10 ply) but nevertheless even though I believe Michelin makes some really good tires when it comes to an AT tire there's much better choices over the A/T2's.
