Cleaning is not done with chemical solvents but with a cleaning solution - for sale at any art store. You don't want to remove the varnish unless you know what you are doing.
There are cleaning solutions available at any artstore. These will remove dirt on top of the varnish, but won't remove the varnish. Removing the varnish requires actual chemical solvents - not recomended for untrained persons.
The Art person leaves a bit to be desired. Staples, Saliva and testing solvant right on the face rather then a much more inconspicuous place are just a few things.

Still think it is mighty handy, instead of the nails... But he says: staples will destroy more surface of the canvas edge and are therefore inferior.
The staples weren’t going into the canvas - but into the polyester cloth she added.

Agreed on your points... although salive contains enzymes and using enzymes is one possible cleaning solution for paintings.
