    About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn't just talk. Our groundbreaking educational content reaches millions of people every month. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don't take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

Even if homeless pooled their resources it wouldn't be enough to buy an acre. Then there's zoning laws and taxes. Then you'd have to build a wall with razor wire around it to keep from being overrun by all the homeless who haven't paid in. It would've work if they were given the land. People have to be helped on an individual basis. And some can't be helped. Some just want to destroy the chance of anyone being helped.

By "shelter" I do not mean these dangerous homeless shelters which enable victimization, many of which should be shut down.

While you’re to be commented to want to give to someone, we recommend you connect with homeless people in your own community. There are hundreds and maybe even thousands of homeless women just like her right in your home community. Setting up individual fundraisers for homeless people is not realistic or practical. We need to prevent and solve homelessness for everyone. Sending a homeless person on the Internet 20 bucks or even 100 bucks, may provide some pizza, and possibly a night in a hotel, but then after that, there’s still homeless it’s best if you take compassion and direct to preventing and solving homelessness in your own community

    • @InvisiblePeople
      @InvisiblePeople  4 месяца назад +16

I’m gonna add that what you’re requesting has been done before. There is a nonprofit that set up individual fundraising pages for all the people in their shelter. The good looking white people received a lot of money. The older Black people did not. Feelings were hurt. And they had to pull the whole thing down. We cannot control who gives who, and to be completely honest, none of the fundraisers helped a person get out of homelessness. The best use of your compassion and your money is to connect to local nonprofits or mutual aid groups and work to prevent and solve homelessness in your community. And if you want, and it feels safe, then donate to people where you live.

Thank you for sharing such videos. When I moved to Cali about 2 years ago, I had no idea about homeless people. Because of the stigma (they are using drugs, they don't want work etc etc etc.) I was pretending they are invisible. Watching such interviews helped a lot and recently I was able to comfortably have conversations with them. I haven't been able to help much but at least that prejudice has been shattered which was a big barrier. I was able to offer help to two young black ladies. I never saw them again but the time I ran into them I made sure I would not pass by without starting a conversation. Without this channel, I would never be able to do it. Thank you for raising awareness about homeless people.

Well, I'm not a Biden fan, as I don't trust Washington insiders. I CAN say that this homeless crisis came on way before Biden or Obama. This goes back to 1980, when apartments stopped getting built, but at the same time, huge amounts of people were coming in to America at the same time. So our housing stock shrunk drastically. And these corrupt politicians, from both parties have never even talked about rebuilding the housing stock back to pre-1980 levels. The population of the US was 218 million that year. And it's 330- 340 million people now. But for 43 years now, we've had this permanent housing shortage as a result of these dimwitted policies. The streets have Third World conditions for sure. I'm from Los Angeles, and in my young years, there were drugs and alcohol then too. But, no homeless people. And we lived in the city itself, not some suburban town.@@hunterslaptop6483

When you're old enough to remember real changes, like when homelessness suddenly kicked in, after 1980. Also, real estate, banking, insurance, for example, were tweaked to favor corporations over citizens ! But most then, didn't know what was going on. Creepy ! Read the Powell Memo,of 1971. It's a blueprint for making everyone a slave to corporations', and slavery in a Fascist country.

I know of shelters that put everyone on meds or made you sleep with blankets infected with disease or had violent residents attacking you. It is basically terrifying. They dehumanize you. The only thing that is helpful is when they pay for the motel. You go in, sleep, shower, relax, eat and leave.
I don't understand why she couldn't stay with the crazy landlord in the nice apartment by the ocean. It is better than being attacked in the shower or being swept off a sidewalk. Nowhere is a place you can just relax. Wherever you live, it is always a struggle to survive. Even animals in the wild, they aren't relaxing. They know there is always a predator around.
I think people get scared of their living situation and run from bad to worse and then have no way out. That is a shame her sons won't even have her and their dying aunt over for a dinner even just to cheer them up. Why are children so neglectful and indifferent nowadays? So many older parents are kicked to the curb. Among the homeless years ago, I don't recall seeing old parents out in the cold. There was always a cheap hotel or somewhere they could live. These aren't partiers, they are just old and weak and unable to keep up anymore.

Despite saving money, investing well homelessness can still happen to you. In 3 months I've had to repay the following a $6,000 SSA over-payment, a $3,000 emergency surgery, $2,000 appliance repair upgrade, 3,700 wall home wall repair and an HOA fee increase from $700 to $900 per month. Luckily I'm blessed enough to survive this, "So far!" But this rapid fire salvo of bills coming due almost immediately would sink most people. Sadly many killer high bills coming due all at once is what make many people homeless. It's said most people can't pay a sudden $400 bill in a month. I'd kill if all I had to pay was an unexpected $400 bill in a month. If rapid killer bills can cripple me, it could happen to anyone!

I plan on taking a road trip across country just to see the world I'm forced to be a part of. I choose to live and be free. Its lonely and hard but worth it compared to the alternative.

Some posting on here sound so callous. My situation is similar to hers, RV and all and it can be rough.
Maintenance on the vehicle, can't park it just anywhere, and if the well off want to go on vacation, you have to take the back seat because all the spots are full, so that leaves you in the fringes scrambling for a place to stay.
Corporations don't want you parking in "their" parking lots and neither do rest stops.
That's the hardest part is constantly being on the move, not much time for anything else.
And if you grew up in a home, and always had something like an apartment, a stable structure, it can be unsettling.
It's fine if you do it 2 weeks out of the year, but full time can be rough.

There’s a million retired folks living in RVs full-time. They should just designate areas where people who have an RV or vehicle to live in to be able to park safely. She has a shelter over her head, she’s just not allowed legally park.

There are a shocking number of "RV Life" channels now, by elderly American women, all happy smiling "look at my rig". They all seem to have previously owned a house, or still do, or park it at their family/friends half the year, or have a decent amount of pension plus benefits, to afford that lifestyle. I'm sure they give a false picture of RV living. If you fall into senior poverty, living in an RV which is falling apart, which you cannot afford to fix or park, with your health deteriorating and NO ONE to turn to, must be a nightmare. ❤ Americans, your only solution is a European style welfare state.

Many are doing the nomad life after watching Bob Wells and doing so to live and not constantly being on survival mode. Many do give a false picture of the realities. Many of us are severely disabled and can't find any type of job to supplement our SS and pensions. Rent is horrible and even park rents are going up. I had a mini house I owned but the property owners it was on sold out and I had to sell at a loss. Put the money on the TT since I couldn't afford anything. I'm one of the luckier ones. I have a son nearby and an older daughter in another state that checks in on me and offers help as they can. Many don't have this. So many tell the elderly to go to their kids but that isn't always feasible for many reasons. It's not always a bad situation. Can be location from medical, jobs, landlords not allowing etc.

There's a story of a man who was traveling through Arizona. He was driving back to his campsite. When he saw a woman walking along the side of the road with nothing but a Blanket around her. She had no clothes on, only a blanket. This man convinced her to get into his car although she was scared to death, she did. Come to find out, she had been homeless and raped and left. Seeing it was late at night in the middle of nowhere, this man convinced her he was safe and let her sleep in his car with the doors locked and the keys with her inside so she was safe while he slept in his tent. The next day he contacted a local woman's shelter and took her there and explained everything. I often wonder what happened to her and how she survived what she went through. At least at one point in my life, I did the right thing.

The country could solve this very easy if they wanted to, and I hope they do want to because the number of people are increasing. It's so easy to fall prey to this. There are so many ways it can be done.
All the country has to do is take a census or poll to get the average size of the families who are victim to this. Are they single people ? (More than likely because they have no one to help with the bills) Gather federal funds, find building companies willing to contract out, buy or donate the land, build lots of 2 bedroom / 1 bedroom homes, or apartments, make and keep them affordable. Put a cap on the price. Not everything has to be competitive, housing is a basic human need.
Take them off the market to corporations and real estate investors like house flippers and let people move in.
It's very difficult watching this in your face, when there is a lot of land the government owns, either not being used or being used for things that are not that important or knowing wealthy people are buying land for whatever they want to do, and knowing there are house builders who have been lured to build big resorts and community type compounds, but its very difficult to find a builder to build you a single family home who is reasonably priced. #classwar
