Mix is superb, this is live TV, not a studio. These guys are damn great, solid and tight. Bass player is in a great zone, guitars ride on top, i loved it...must have listened to it 20 times...
My band opened for these guys the week before this at a college and we thought we made it big because we opened for a band that (later) played on Letterman, lol
It actually sounds like the tempo is set higher than the recorded version on purpose. If you listen closely you hear that the delay time on both the lead guitar and bass are set to be faster than on the recording. Half way they do bump up the tempo even further though. Nevertheless I watched this performance by accident four years back and I was in awe.
This band has the Allure!! If it wasnt for this perfomance on letterman i doubt i wouldve ever heard of thease guys! i havent liked any bands from the last 10 years or so, but i luv this!
I'm always surprised when some indie band plays on david letterman. Like does he legit like these bands and listens to them? or this is a way to save money cuz indie is cheaper.
I'm pretty sure he doesn't pick who we wants on. That's up to the promoters and organizers. Also, it's not a matter of cost. Everyone that plays on letterman, does it for the publicity. No one is paid to perform on letterman. I'm sure bands don't mind that, cause hell, they're playing on LETTERMAN. Good band. I just think its awkward when indie bands with youngsters play to a crowd mostly of reserved white old timers
MrWalker1000 I still remember this performance, I stayed up watched this ENTIRE episode of Letterman just for DIIV. I don't think Dave had a say in who plays his show, indie bands making their TV debut are pretty cheap, and DIIV's album came out only a few months before
Letterman genuinely likes alt music. He's gone on record saying so plenty of times. He said that while he was doing the show listening to and talking about music was his main pass time
first youtube comment ever..just thought i'd pipe in cause i know whats wrong with the mix..It's been encoded into Mid Side, but not decoded on the output back to LR..also Mid and Side have been reversed just to screw with it further..Dave and the house band are ok cause they where probably mixing in a seperate control room..sorry for being technical for the people who aren't sound engineers
The reason for the sound was that it was more commercially appealing for the network. Basically "safer". I love the awkwardness when Dave shake's the end.
This is mono duplicated on the 2 sides with around 10db more on the right track. Now idea how this would happen but I honestly doubt it aired like that, must be a recording mistake.
Acoustic, Jandek type music.. It's unlikely its online but I have a few tracks from friends who run small labels in BK (like World War Records etc).. Just dissonant mumbling.. Several months after touring with BF, he's all jangly/punky and upbeat.. Coincidence? Maybe, but I think he obviously realized that that formula was were the money was at, and he's right (for about the next 12 months max). Which is why Im surprised DIIV is popular. This is all so 2008 (or really, 1986)..
its call lo-fi for a reason, they want that fuzzy sound, defines the genre, not to say the mix is perfect, but i feel like the sound they got is what there goin for
"hey guys, can't remember the bpm of our song Doused..."
other guy: "hmm me neither.. but something like 2000 bpm i guess"
"probably"
Colby 2012
it's rock and roll
Gotta finish before the commercial break...
I can't imagine the adrenaline rush from playing Letterman. I get it from playing local dives.
Local diivs
they're playing the song at double speed, on Letterman!
I love them folks.

Mix is superb, this is live TV, not a studio. These guys are damn great, solid and tight. Bass player is in a great zone, guitars ride on top, i loved it...must have listened to it 20 times...
Dam they hit the "sweet spot" !
Legend
Bass player set the pace here.. and he set it fast!! I like it !
That scream was awesome
My band opened for these guys the week before this at a college and we thought we made it big because we opened for a band that (later) played on Letterman, lol
I MEAN.. you opened for Diiv bro thats pretty timelessly rad!!
Actually remember staying up late that night JUST to see DIIV on TV, thanks for uploading!
I've met them with this song 5 years ago and my life completely changed
I hope they go back and peform dust
I love this live version, wish the album version sounded like this.
this was wicked. after many repeat listens of the vinyl in the last couple months, glad to see it come off so great live.
Would kill a parrot to be in this band
Really liking this band, hope we dont have to wait too long for a new LP
haha looking back this is funny
This is so great for them, they deserve the attention. Awesome performance!

Yes, it's one of the best late night performances I've ever seen. They killed this song - challenged themselves.
This band has the Allure!! If it wasnt for this perfomance on letterman i doubt i wouldve ever heard of thease guys! i havent liked any bands from the last 10 years or so, but i luv this!
nice to see some bands that can actually play their instruments on late night television again!
Mikey Curtis What’s an “instermint?”

I'm always surprised when some indie band plays on david letterman. Like does he legit like these bands and listens to them?
or this is a way to save money cuz indie is cheaper.
MrWalker1000 why no both?
I'm pretty sure he doesn't pick who we wants on. That's up to the promoters and organizers.

Whatever the reason it's cool but it's not unique to Letterman either other talk show hosts do it
Letterman genuinely likes alt music. He's gone on record saying so plenty of times.
He said that while he was doing the show listening to and talking about music was his main pass time
miss ya dave, love ya diiv
Rock on Bro top tune oor boy Cobain wuda been proud!

That bass sounds awesome
DIIVUHH
Goddamn they are so talented.
I like them. Cross between Sonic Youth and The Cure. Bringing back the 90s.
I love these guys

This makes me jittery in a good way !!
Great as always from these guys!
essa apresentação é muito foda \m/

I still without believe they already appear on Letterman's show!!! Now I'll wait for Beach Fossils
The fucking energy of this band is amazing.

Letterman casi siempre tan bien acompañado.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!
The reason for the sound was that it was more commercially appealing for the network. Basically "safer". I love the awkwardness when Dave shake's the end.
Late to the gravy train, but glad to be on this one ;)
will see them at big day out 2014!!
DIIV Show! !
nice! now bring on Beach Fossils, And Wild Nothing
tremendo
the mix is unbelievable, what the fuck
Letterman is so cool.
Cool
Kudos man
great bass line
I don't think they ever get the tempo right live
nah they just play all of their songs faster live
They don't even want to haha
Now it’s different…
oh fcuk how fast is...:)
it could be nerves as well, not uncommon for a first TV appearance
they usually play their shows faster... they wouldn't play it so accurately if it was nerves
one word : cocaine
They sound like: Wipers - The Circle. Another great recording to check if you like these guys.
+Emil Phoryew They really don't.
looks like Cole needs to pee most of the time, i love it
I was "like" #667. Couldn't leave it there. Oh, btw, song is sick!
This is mono duplicated on the 2 sides with around 10db more on the right track.

relevance still
Далаадно =)) Круто!

yeeeah comfy pants
I don't think so, he's actually screaming on the mic at 1:50...
DKFM BROUGHT ME HERE
nice moves
its call lo-fi for a reason, they want that fuzzy sound, defines the genre, not to say the mix is perfect, but i feel like the sound they got is what there goin for
This is the only performance on Letterman by kids where he doesn't say, "Don't neglect your studies".
I haven't used the word n00b in a loooong time... and here many people belong to that category....
Doused version Punk? :V (why it's too fast?)
because its better...
En vivo la tocan más rápido bkn!
Major sound technical difficulties, the levels are waaaay off, not the bands fault
what was the music cole was producing before beach fossils?
perhaps i would've liked it more if it sounded more aggressive but i still love it
anyone know where i can get shoes like cole smith's?
From a hobo.
made me lol good answer. I was thinking urban outfitters.
:O !!!
The first few seconds of the song David (bassist) looks so creepy
+TheWulfe17 his name's devin
devin ruben perez to be exact :p
heard he says some pretty cool stuff on 4chan sometimes
Ephrem Goldstein lol yeah he's on it all the time
The long-awaited comeback of Grunge under the guise of hipster teens playing cold wave
Acá decimos que vamos el domingo 24 a MdP :D
Whoa, slow down the tempo guys wtf lol
Nah faster its more cool to me
it's not your typical "indie" band guys
They should of played sometime
This is pretty huge for these guys.. I hope Cole is doing OK these days, and has cleaned up a bit.
ya i hope he's hooked on methadone too
he's like a year clean or so, amazing
the bassist is well good!
fuuukkkk yeeee
lol ikr??? they have the bas in the left eeeeaarr???? O.o
Why are they playing so fast ?
Whoever thinks the mix is bad probably hasn't seen DIIV perform live before....
In mono, you're completely right.
But having most of the mix hard panned right while the echo is hard panned left is just awful
