    I had loads of PV's videos back in the VHS days. I called him about training once and had a nice conversation with him. Unfortunately, it was too expensive back then. I would have had to fly to California and his training was very expensive.... We owe a debt to guys like Paul, myself included, who were on a quest for real world, effective fighting methods and information.
    Prior to the VHS (yes we had Black Belt magazine and the like, but...), we basically had to listen to our local martial arts instructors, who didn't have the information or knowledge most of the time.

    • @MaharlikaAWA
      @MaharlikaAWA 2 года назад +2

      He is still expensive! This kind of stuff is for the rich people with lots of money to burn. He is the kind of guy who waits for maybe 5 suckers with money to just sign up for his classes and training through seminars and things. He makes his living off of that. $3,000 for a weekend of training and if he gets 10 guys to sign up that is $30,000 right there.

      What he's teaching in the video will not work unless you're an experienced martial artist in muai thai. Blocking a punch with your elbow like that is extremely hard to do and might injure you if you aren't used to it like a muai thai fighter. You're much better off learning traditional martial arts. And yeah some schools and teachers don't know everything but that was back then. When anybody could swindle you with a shiny black belt just to get money out of you. It's also up to you to vet the martial arts school to see if it's legit.

      Whatever you learn you can make work if you have to opportunity.
      Learning a martial art will not make you a fighter. Martial arts is about a lot more than learning how to fight. It is about life.
      Some people can fight naturally, and never learned a thing, others can spend a lifetime studying martial arts and be completely useless.
      Become a cop or something if you want to learn to fight. Sadly, you have to get into combat to learn combat, all else is theory.
      I've been a martial artist for 43 years. I learned how to fight by fighting a lot.
      I learned more from being bullied by my two older brothers and all their friends than I ever learned in martial arts classes. I fought a lot in school, and later on the street. I've done a lot of martial arts competitions, but that is not the same.

    A helpful hint of learning self defense, is look at it like being in a school, take one section at a time, studied it for a week, and then as in any class take the test. In other words, see if the movement is complimented to wanting to be accomplished, or is it zig zagging on its own, preventing you to be fluent to go through a start and finish recognition quickly that now will over time allow for this move to continually improve, because it is just that, a simplified move, one of self defense that need to be accomplished when the opening is available, and not confusing to repeat as its zig zagging will influences.

    Blocking someone's bare hand with your incredibly hard elbow can absolutely wreck their hand while you take little damage. I have several questions:
    1. Why is the jab thrown with high elbow? 2. What about ribs? This stance doesn't protect them at all.
    Also, I don't see how this defence will work against the jab-cross combination or the jab-body hook one.

    • @DanWalterTradeview
      @DanWalterTradeview 2 года назад +3

      Keep your elbows in and your forearm vertical. A high elbow will lead to a counterattack. A vertical forearm is strong compared to one where the hand is turned because the two bones are lined up. Bruce Lee often threw with a slightly turned wrist and then straighten on impact to add a twist to his punches.

    Actually muay thai fighters fight with the style of their hands high because it's easy to drop elbows from up high down low to destroy a roundhouse kick just like destroying these punches with elbows.
    It is much easier to drop your arms when they are tired for a block then to raise them, so practicing keeping them high keeps them in an advantageous position.

Gloves don't protect your hands form elbow very well. I mean I've broken my hand on someone face before with gloves on. Hands are brittle and of you hit slightly wrong problems are a possibility, but if you hit the point of an elbow, gloves or not your hand will be in trouble.

Although honestly I don't believe you, nothing personal, just that people talk online as if they are professionals at everything, particularly fighting. And for someone to say they have never injured a hand with gloves is a new one for me. I was taught very early as a kid that you try your best not to hit elbows.
      If you haven't hurt your hands by now, then maybe you have big strong hands, but eventually you will hurt your hands on something, I've seen people hurt their hands on ribs believe it or not.
      Wrapped hands in gloves are of course much safer, but still, if you have been around gyms fighting you surely have seen people hurt their hands with gloves? If not, I don't know what gym you go to where everyone has terribly strong bones in their hands.
      Hand conditioning doesn't do a lot to protect the bones in the hand, the simple fact is the bones are tiny, and if you hit hard enough against an elbow, with or without gloves your hands are at risk.
      I've hurt my hands badly on foreheads too ,with gloves.
      Now if you find your hands are immune to breaking then good for you, but for the rest of us (and I've trained with professional boxers and a few mma guys) and they have all, and I mean all hurt their hands before, just part of the game.
      You seem to be lucky or you have terminator hands?
      Hand conditioning is more for your skin than anything else, stopping the nerves working in the skin and maybe building the knuckles up a little, but the bones in the hand are very susceptible to just fracturing. Wraps will stop complete breaks for the most part, by holding down the bones, but fractures in the hands are just part of fighting.
      I've known many older ex fighters who have massive hands that are all crippled. I've seen professional fighters quite clearly break their hands during fights on tv, it happens all the time. Of course it depends how hard you punch too.
      If you do indeed fight, and it wasn't just nonsense, please be careful with your hands, once they go it's a pain to get over, and you never get full confidence back either, always worried about hitting the wrong thing. I pick my shots more than just throwing anything.

      @Nicky Bobby nobody has anything to lie about if you don't. Why does anyone lie? I never accused you of it I just don't believe you is all. And that is because most people in gyms can't fight, let alone people in youtube comments sections.

    • @RicStaR2410
      @RicStaR2410 2 года назад

      @Nicky Bobby happy that you are another muay thai guy. I fought in Thailand for 2 years, very low level, nothing high level, just went over to train and fell into some fights, got worked over the last 2 fights and decided that it wasn't really for me, always injured, always hurt, and always having stitches. It's a painful game and I decided to be in the background, although I still train and spar. But fighting is a painful game, the sparring to fight is bad. But I don't spar anything like I would for fights.
      You kind of made some strange comments, you said you're religious about hand wraps, but in the comments before said that you have had bare knuckle fights and you condition your hands and one way is by hitting a heavy bag bare knuckle? I wouldn't call that religious about hand wraps.
      I've seen many guys injure hands on heavy bags too, because of course you cannot hit a heavy bag properly, it bends your hands and wrists up in very odd positions, especially with any hooks thrown.
      But again, if you're speaking truth, then what I say doesn't matter at all, don't have to prove anything to me, I haven't had a fight in 10 years, I only train other people now and I couldn't care less if you're telling the truth or not, my point is, by what you have said I don't believe it, not saying you're lying, I don't know if you're lying, and it really doesn't matter.
      All I know is I've been training to fight and training others to fight for a long time, and hands get broken, knuckles get damaged and wrists get fucked up, sometimes from seemingly nothing.
      Hands are weak, weaker than most other bones in the body, you hit against them you can take damage.
      I mean, you can watch professional boxing fights and you will see broken hands happen all the time and they are using big gloves. Yes they protect the hands, or course, but they aren't magic. The same way I can break an orbital socket with my fists in gloves, my hands can also get broken on harder bones.
      You said you never had any problems, but now you're saying you have had problems with your hands?
      I have never completely broken a bone in my hand, but I have fractured both hands maybe 15 times between them. And another 15 times I've damaged my wrists. If I wrapped my wrists tight enough to never get injured, I wouldn't be able to feel my hands.
      Hand damage is why a lot of people retire from combat sports.
      Prince Naseem said he had intense hand pain and that is why he retired, I'd argue it was because he lost on top of that, but boxers who wear the biggest gloves and the most wrap get terrible hands. Mayweather had to inject his hands before fights with numbing agents.
      Good luck with your training. I don't mean to offend if any offence was taken, but I've lived long enough to not believe anything anyone says that I don't know personally or especially if what they say contradicts with what I know.
      And unfortunately you have said some things I find odd. Does it mean you're lying? No. Does it mean I won't believe it until I see it? Yes. I don't believe anyone on here because I've seen thousands of people say they can fight, come to the gym and get worked over by novices. Doesn't mean you would, you may be brilliant and have insanely tough hands.
      God bless my friend. Enjoy your training.

      @@tomlewis632 That's beautiful. My uncle was a boxing champion, but he never spoke about it - just fight police and men in pubs and always win, get locked up. He was ferocious, but not to me. My friend's dad's mate, taught us to do reverse punches. I went on to practice it every day for five minutes. I kept doing it all year, and it gave me confidence, and I now realise precision, and speed, although I already had the speed from years of being flogged - by an adult. I'm grateful in some ways because truth be known, my speed was never matched by anyone well into my fourties.
      That said, a foundation is critical. Give them something, and if they grab it, they will want more. Speed, precision, focus, power. You can combine these attributes in many and diverse ways. I believe its wrong to fight.
      There may be times when there is no choice because you are backed into a corner. What helped me was a great imagination, and incredible speed. My Martial Arts experience across five disciplines totals 30 formal weeks in my twenties. However, I spent years choreographing fight scenes in my head since teen age years. I eventually realised that once I saw combat scenes and MA movements, I could visualise these in the imaginary arena - both in slow and fast motion. It's because of what I experienced in my early years - I had to observe because I was immobilised, and that taught me to see in ways that people may not realise is possible.
      I am getting close to 60 years of age and although I'm not keen on boxing because it's too rigid for me, I did a little in my 20's, 30', 40's and now in my 50's. Each decade I didn't like it (except for the speed element), but this time, it's difference. I train with retired men who are wonderful, and we have a trainer oversee it all. What I like is that they do conditioning training, and as an athlete, that's the part I love - super fit. Keep my heart rate at less than 45 bpm resting.
      If we cannot be creative when we "express ourselves" how can we be true to ourselves? I believe Bruce Lee called this, "Honestly expressing yourself." That to me, has always been what it's about and that's why I saw incredible things when I got put in a fight situation - only 3-4 times in my life. The form, the reflex, and the flow - was released, and was much a part of me, as it was the system (cistern) it came from.
      Like I said, I'm not interested in fighting.I can perfect a sporting technique in less than a season whereas it takes people years. I learn human motion like breathing - whether it is kicking a football (both feet), soccer ball, hitting a ball, or throwing a ball, to gymnastics, to excelling at nunchucks, to tap dancing, to shuffle dance, I love motion, and I love running. The fuller the range of motion one can experience, the better one can express oneself.
      We learn at different rates but the best way to learn is through one to one interaction, through diversity, through structured and attainable challenges (refer Blaise Pascal, discovered calculus), and through caring, loving, patient nurturing.

    With your hands up so high and within arms reach of an opponent, what's to stop them from kicking you in the gut, thrust kicks to your knees, or in your ho-ho. It looks like it would need rules similar to boxing in order to be effective. I mean, what if the guy pulled out a knife and you've made your goal to punch at a hand that's welding a blade? That seems reckless. You're probably going to get cut or jabbed in your hands or arms or elbows at some point if you use this technique, and if you can't use your arms, you're obviously at quite the disadvantage. Of course under the right circumstances, it could be effective periodically during certain moments in certain types of street fights, but I would never use it as my default.
