    My wife and I live in Atlanta, Georgia and we watched most of your videos this morning! You two are fabulous! We're excited to hear more about your process selling your house in Canada, how much you paid for your new house in Olon, why you purchased instead of renting, and good ways people could find places like yours with ocean views for reasonable prices. I know, "reasonable prices" is subjective. Anyway, we're glad to have found you and your channel. Thank you!

      Thanks for watching our channel and all your kind words. Our next video will be about why we bought our home vs rent. So hopefully that will answer many of your questions. A Google search on the area you are looking at moving too will find a number of real estate sites you can get an idea of price both for renting and buying.

    Ecuador got such a variety of nature, life is incredible, the weather is amazing, and rent is cheaper, you can even rent a whole house for 6 people in a private community in a fancy area for around $500 to $800 depending on the amenities and plus the currency is the USA DOLLAR . So I couldn't complain about it.

    This video focused on where to live in Ecuador, but not if you should even move here at all. People need to ask themselves, why do they "think" they want to move here ?
    Come here for something new, to explore, immerse, the culture, language, family maybe, new adventure. Unfortunately, too many people come here just because of cost of living, ie, economic refugees,,,,, please don't.. I have seen far too many people here in Cuenca in that boat and usually they are not happy souls and often return to the home country after a year or two. And don't forget you family back home. Ultimately you need to decide if the separation is worth it, or if you can afford to go back and visit.
    Closely related is to learn at least some Spanish. Hate to say but far too many gringos do not even try, and hang in their gringo bubbles. You can do that anywhere. Before deciding where to live, figure out if you want to make the leap and that requires visiting first. Then this video becomes more relevant.

      Thanks for your great comment. You're absolutely right. There is both a push and a pull. You have to be going to Ecuador or any other country for that matter. For reasons of going there not just cost of living. That would be a huge mistake. We love the nature and we plan on integrating as much as we can. And of course that means learning the language. Totally agree with your comment

      Great comment. I just dont understand people who move here with no spanish and with saving money as their main goal. Yes financial quality of life is important but as you say the expat ghettos end up rather sad, having sunday lunch parties, shopping in huddles and griping about whats wrong with Ecuador (in their view). I stay well clear of them.
      I came here on holiday twice a year for 6 years in a row and took spanish courses before moving here permanently in 2011 when I retired.
      Living on the coast can be a challenge. I have learned patience (well almost!) and not to take water and electricity supply for granted. But the challenges keep me
      energetic and curious. I think I would expire from sheer boredom if I had to move back to Europe.

    Hi you two, good info and content. We completely agree with your info on researching online first (with Google and also RUclipsrs like yourselves and us!), and then joining Facebook groups to learn the area(s) you are interested in, get a feel for the places and chat with the locals and expats in those areas. We do that in all the countries we choose to live in.

    I don't think you mentioned Snow and Curt on RUclips. They've been living and traveling in a van, thru Mexico all the way down to Argentina. They spend around 90 days in each country, as they did in Ecuador. They traveled to very rural areas to see birds, waterfalls and monkeys. They also had a few medical issues and show how they dealt with those in a foreign country, including Ecuador. I wish you luck in your move.

    If you are planning to move permanently/long-term and you are not a climate change denier, it may be useful to investigate what are the projections of the impact of climate change on Ecuador in let’s say 10 years. If there is sea-level rise it may be risky to buy beach-front property. If there are areas prone to flooding, are there plans on dealing with more frequent floods? Is there more than one access point to your area in case the main road gets obstructed? How may thinning ozone layer impact harmful UV in high-altitude areas? Many places in the world are experiencing droughts - is that a problem in Ecuador? Cuenca is supposedly the only place where tap water is safe to drink, so that may be advantage. Ecuador may be actually much safer than other places according to some reports, but there may be huge differences in individual sections of Ecuador. Just a thought.

    • @KrisandMike
      @KrisandMike  Год назад +2

      Thanks for spending the time and writing such a great comment. Actually I have research most of that as I am a research junkie lol. I looked at a climate change model for Ecuador. Certainly see. Level rise is the biggest issue. That contributed to us buying on a hill as opposed to waterfront. It also seems that areas around the equator are affected to a lesser degree than places in the northern and southern hemispheres as we move towards the poles. For example, where I move from in Canada is much more effective and many more storms are going through that area as well as wildfires being an issue in the future. It's sad we have to take this type of thing into account in our decisions, but that is the real world now. Thanks again for your comment.

    • @jpny4750
      @jpny4750 Год назад +2

      @@KrisandMike - yes, I also noticed reports that countries close to equator are safer, other than the water levels rising. I am not much into a beach life, so I was particularly looking at inland places, to see how I’d do in a high altitude. The UV seems to be already something non-natives need to protect against since you are much closer to the sun and air is thinner. But my biggest worry is drinking water, I think. I am planning to visit hopefully within the next 12 months to see for myself. :-)

    Kris and Mike, How have you handled the impact of missing family while you are in Ecuador? We have a large family and this point has made my wife unwilling to consider a move. We are thinking in terms of trips to visit for a few weeks or months at a time. Do you have grandchildren?

    • @KrisandMike

      Our kids are kinda spread out in Ontario so we normally see them a few times a year. In Ecuador we do regular video calls which work really well. We also plan on going back for a few weeks ever Canadian summer. In addition we strongly believe we need to live our own lives but still connected to family of course. We would not have made the move without current technology.
