So Zoro standing to be cut down from the front meant Mihawk wouldn't have to kill someone on the ground or from behind on top of Zoro not shaming himself. Mihawk saw that Zoro would follow the path of a swordsman or die trying, so he wanted to see how far he could go. Mihawk had also said he would take Zoro's captain after he defeated him, but didn't. And he liked Luffy's hat and wondered why Garp would send him to take such a weakling alive.

Hey Dre and Shruti! I am a big fan of the channel. I just wanted to mention that I think the intro of you might be a little too loud. everytime I check your videos I jump up and turn the volume down a little. I don't know if I'm the only one who noticed that, but I just wanted to let yall know :) !
Garp said that he always turned down the promotion to fleet admiral because he would lose his freedom, in the same respect that is what Luffy wants...his freedom to go on adventures.
I kind of wish Luffy got to fight Don Krieg, and the intro to Mihawk here got a lot of exposition, I assumed he just followed Krieg from the GL but here it's that Garp called him in. But for nearly 5 years the Warlord's were an incredible threat just because of how they introduced Mihawk, in this version idk. Maybe they wanted to give him more screen time or give Garp more screen time, idk. I'm just happy it didn't take too much away from either character, but it definitely took away from Luffy and the story overall. Luffy shows how far he's willing to go for the abstract idea of peoples dreams and happiness in the Don Krieg fight which solidifies his personality by the end of Arlong Park. It also looks like they are skipping Loguetown.
Let's put it this way In the World of OnePiece Mihawk is a Lvl 99-100 character And the Strawhats here are lvl 2😂 Mihawk had no reason to be in the grandline😂
Mihawk is the absolute strongest swordsman. Even the Anime and Manga readers don't know exactly how strong... Let that sink in and let your imagination run wild with possibilities.
Mihawks intro was to humble the strawhats cause they were mid-diff-ing opponent so far so they were getting cocky. Its his dream so zoro gonna win kind of thinking. Then the greatest swordsman in the entire world shows up to teach them they weren't big fish in a small pond they tiny fish in a puddle.
Everything in this episode was close to the original except that Don Krieg was supposed to be the next opponent of Luffy ar Baratie after the fight of Zoro VS Mihawk but they clearly changed the script due to the less budget because Krieg, Pearl (the shield men death behind Krieg) and Gin was ready with their costumes and the details, very wasted, even the japanese audience was disappointed -.-
If you are wondering, the reason Zoro let Mihawk slash him is that he knew he couldn't win, and so he'd rather die than live a life without his dream. I guess in the heat of the battle he didn't realize that he could train and challenge Mihawk again. To be fair, as far as he's known, every time Zoro has gotten into a serious duel, one of the two parties has ended up dead, so he expected that Mihawk would kill him because he was the inferior swordsman.
Also a subversion in that Mihawk actually took a noticeable liking to Zoro and let him live because of it... every enemy they've had has been ruthless and dispatched every opponent and always struck to kill, but Mihawk holds back because he recognizes Zoro does have the potential to be a real challenge, and he respects that.
No, he thought he was done. He specifically challenged Mihawk to a duel to the death. He wasn’t going to walk that back, just cause he was losing, but at this point, disarmed of two swords, he knew he had no chance at winning. But Zoro is neither a coward or a hypocrite, so even if there was no point in fighting the duel still ends with a death. So he wanted what he thought would be the final blow to be to his front, facing his enemy as a proper swordsman. If he’d tried to back down, surrender, flee or otherwise try to survive, Mihawk would have killed him without a moments hesitation. But Mihawk saw a true warrior who just hadn’t had time to grow yet, and so instead decided to give him that chance. Still had to cut him up though, and bad enough that he’d need help to survive. Not cutting him at all would have also been shameful to a man who risked everything.
@kagato23 That is exactly why Mihawk took a liking to Zoro. He saw a kindred spirit, someone like himself in thought and mind and resolve... someone interesting who maybe now was a rabbit but one day was going to need a cannon to fight and might even beat the cannon. He saw another true swordsman, heart and soul, just like himself. To Mihawk that was precious. To Mihawk that was worth giving Zoro the chance to try again.
