Emily is here to be as confused as us and screaming for Rose to get actual answers 😂
Rose did a couple of "it's your preference" disclaimers which is simultaneously needed comfort and anxiety inducing for me (context I'm a super late starter in learning to cook)
@@evolvedcopper2205 can totally relate 😂 'is this my preference....or do i just suck' kind of feeling every time lol
She's here so the others can berate her ketchup habits
@@evolvedcopper2205 you should just chill out and get cooking, you'll find that it's much more relaxing than stressful. Don't be afraid to make mistakes, everybody does, in the beginning, just try following recipes, and then, when you're familiar with what you like to eat and make, play around a little with spices, flavoring profiles, and naturally you'll see what you can or can't change in a recipe. It's super fun and shouldn't be taken so seriously.
@@JotaC i actually have taken up cooking as an activity to de-stress but I'm trying to avoid the bad habits that my mother developed over her years of cooking, she doesn't care anymore and the quality really shows. I always found recipes to be guides rather than rules for most dishes

I just wanted to post this :D I actually didn't know you can eat it sweet until I talked about this with a foreigner when I was 16. A friend showed us our new favourite topping: crush garlic, mix it well in oil until it becomes emulsified and spread a thin layer on top. Oh my lord it's so good *.*

I must stand up for Emily :) I'm from central Europe and we use to make "bread in eggs" only salty, not sweet. In fact, when I first saw French toast (sweet), I was surprised. Maybe the same like all of you were, seeing Emily use a ketchup :)
It's really the same - stale bread, eggs mixed with milk, but you add a bit of salt and maybe pepper to it, if you want. Quick soak, fry it on the pan with some oil and you're done.
And guess what is the very popular topping? :)
Of course it's ketchup.
Or some shredded cheese, if you're not really into ketchup like me.
Or you can just eat it as it is, it's delicious on its own, as well :)
Love how Emily just embracing the ketchup meme lol
emily definitely had too much fun naming "odd" toppings to add to french toast
Well she's the one who used ketchup on it for real so what could be good in her mind has a looser connection to reality.
I love how Emilee went from the villain of this series to literally everyone’s favorite
Leave Emily aloooone, everyone on Balkan eats French toast savory, with sour cream or KETCHUP. Come Emily, we will keep you safe 💕
Yeeees, it's best with the ketchup, Balkan❤️
I've always just known it as egg bread which is always savory. Grew up eating it with a BBQ with a sausage in it with tomato sauce and onion. I was so confused when i found out people called it French Toast hahaha
Savory varieties of French toast are actually not that unusual. Some might debate - as the chefs do in this video - whether that still counts as "French toast", as the name has become more specific to do with the sweet variety among modern pastry chefs. But in terms of the basic definition of bread dipped in egg and fried - that's got lots of varieties and a lot of them are savory in nature. And yes, ketchup and cheese or cream are quite common among the savory varieties. They resemble more of an omelet in taste, perhaps.
Spoken like a true Sadist! What's next eating pancakes with ketchup!

Oh my God, that was amazing. I was laughing so hard I cried. I love Emily and Lorenzo.
And again, in Emily's defense, her french toast was more egg than bread. She had like 3 eggs in that bowl for a single, measly slice of white bread. Ketchup is justified at that point.

Story time:
When I was in high school, one guy in my class asked the french teacher (which is from France hahaha) the same question about why it's called French toast, and he told us that in France, when the bread is getting super old and hard, they mix egg and milk or even water, they put the bread in it, then they put it in the oven and when it comes out, it would be a nice soft bread, in ancient times, they didn't do it with the goal of getting a french toast, it was only a way to eat old bread and save some coins from not having to buy other piece of bread or bake it from scratch.
Story Time: The dish is actually originally from Germany (which is after all the country of the bread, so no surprise there) and is called there "Arme Ritter" (Poor Knights). Same in Sweden and a few other countries. Even in the US the dish was originally named "German Toast" not "French Toast". I am not quite sure why this changed, but I suspect simply for advertising reasons, plus, everything German was shunned during the two World Wars. You know, kind of a French Fries/Freedom Fries situation, except that the name stuck. Happend to quite a few German dishes. Still around, but renamed.
@@swanpride Und schon wieder was gelernt
@@swanpride super interesting!!
@@swanpride Since when germany is the country of bread? Bread is like much older than Gerany (or France, or countries in fact XD). And if I want to choose an area where bread appeared first, it will be Middle-East, especially Iraq/Iran, because... well that's where agriculture appeared ^^
@Krankar Volund Since Germany has 2256 official recognized kind of bread and is even applying for an UNESCO recognition. It has thousands of Bakeries, regional bread specialities and there is even a bread museum in Germany. Nobody else takes bread that serious. The last meal of the day is even literally called evening bread. So in a culture in which THAT much bread is eaten and celebrated, there is also left-over bread once a while, and quite a few dishes in which you can use it. Arme Ritter is only one example, there is also Scheiterhaufen and Semmelknödel (basically bread dumplings).
They surrounded Emily with her favorite condiment!! And she had so much comments given to hrr hahaha sure ketchup is weird but it's one of the things that really makes us like Emily ❤

Pain perdu means "lost bread" and that does not in any way means sinful.
Its just that you would use day-old bread that has lost its freshly-baked flavor.
It is meant to highlight the fact that its a way to re-use bread that would otherwise be lost.

In Emily’s French toast nothing is sweet so I see why it would be a good snack.
